This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Moctezuma Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Nacozari concentrator of the Moctezuma Copper Co. (the Mexican subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation) is located about 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz., in the Moctezuma District of the State of Sonora. Nacozari is the southern terminus of the Nacozari Railroad, ever which all concentrate is transported to Douglas for smelting.

The final objective of a mine ventilation project is to find a way of supplying the working faces with the necessary quantity of air to dilute all the possible air contaminants to safe limits and to maintain the temperature, humidity and oxygen content within desirable limits. To accomplish the aforesaid, decisions have to be made at early stages of planning and design of a mining operation. That is, ventilation and mine planning are closely related and interdependent, and experience has proved that improvisation as related to mine environment is rarely optimal in ventilation engineering. Mine management should be concerned with two general aspects of ventilation problems. The first is related to the statuatory requirements which are usually the minimum standards that have to be maintained. During the last two decades, mining laws have become increasingly stringent and management of operating mines had to face the effects of these externalities. In some cases these required either a production rate reduction or additional mine development. The second aspect that management should not overlook is the technical and economical importance of mine ventilation on the overall mining cost. In coal mining it is necessary to move, on an average, five tons of air through the mine for each ton of coal produced. The power cost incurred is perhaps the single most important direct cost assigned to ventilation but it is not the only one. Other costs that should be considered include the supervisory labor cost, fan depreciation and maintenance, doors, stoppings and regulators construction cost and maintenance, the additional mine airways development and maintenance because of ventilation requirements. This research project had two main objectives: (1) To identify the smoke limits of gaseous fuel-air mixtures and (2) to obtain and evaluate basic chemical information on the formation of smoke in very rich flames near the smoke limit. Such information would do much to establish the circumstances for car-bon deposition in gas appliances and in other types of combustors. Based on tests with ethylene and propane, these studies showed the following: 1. Smoke limits are related to the yellow-tip limits of the fuel. Previous research established sufficient data to permit prediction of yellow-tip limits on gas burners using a wide variety of fuels. The present study of smoke limits deals only with ethylene-air flames, but the concept that was developed is probably applicable to other fuels.

"The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district, Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C.The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907.As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,500 linear feet, were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses of 205 core samples were made.Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.The project work embodied in this report was under the immediate supervision of Austin B. Clayton, project engineer, and the general supervision of H. B. Ewoldt, district engineer for North Carolina and Tennessee. The preliminary report, written by Austin B. Clayton, was revised and the various figures redrawn for publication by T. J. Ballard under the general supervision of M. H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division.Acknowledgment is due the Metallurgical Branch for analytical determinations of the samples.The mine property is 1.5 miles southwest of the village of Gold. The upper parts of the veins in the district were first worked for gold; however, the increase in the sulfide content of the veins with depth rendered the amalgamation process for gold recovery ineffective, and the mines were closed.The period of greatest activity at the Union Copper mine was from 1899 to 1906. At an earlier period the oxidized and leached part of the lode near the surface was mined from a working known as the ""big cut,"" the reported yield of which was $300,000 in gold.3/ The mine has not been operated since 1907.J. T. Pardee3/ lists the probable value of the production of the Union Copper mine as $1,050,000, of which about $675,000 was the value of some 5,000,000 pounds of copper produced."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop and evaluate a training workshop for mine safety training personnel. The workshop was based on the Instructional Development Institute (IDI) which has been used for nearly ten years to train educators and administrators in the application of a nine-step model for defining, developing, and evaluating instruction. The Mining Instructional Development Institute (MIDI) was developed by investigators at the University of Southern California as a two-phase project. Phase I involved the modification of the six-day IDI program (including audiovisual presentations, workbooks, games, and exercises) for use by mine safety trainers as a workshop lasting three and one-half days. Phase II involved the evaluation and validation of the prototype MIDI workshop by means of a two-stage jury of experts and a prototype field trial. On the basis of data collected in the validation process it was determined that the institute provided an effective and useful method of instruction in mine safety training and that the institute would be especially valuable for mine safety training administrators and supervisors.

Excellent metal quality, with lower power requirement, is attained in electrorefining titanium by using internal heating of the fused-salt bath. An internal heater provides more effective heat utilization, simplifies structural components in cell design, and prolongs cell life by eliminating direct application of heat to the cell container. This Bureau of Mines report covers one phase of the research in progress at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., for improving the techniques and lowering the total power requirement for electro-refining titanium metal.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

Safety and health professionals recognize that training is a critical element of any effective safety and health program. An extensive literature survey has led the authors to conclude that we are at the beginning of a revolution in training due to changes in the demographics of the workforce, the rapid growth of technology, and the universal ascendance of the information age. Of present major concern in the mining industry is how to provide appropriate training for an aging workforce and concurrently develop training for the expected influx of new and less experienced miners as older workers retire. This report explores the key issues in the changing safety and health training area as identified by the multidisciplinary team of NIOSH researchers who conducted the literature survey. Issues include generational differences between newer mine workers and the present workforce with respect to their physical, psychological, social, and cultural characteristics; their learning styles and work expectations; and the impact of technology. Some preliminary conclusions are offered for future training needs.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. The studies herein reported were begun as a part of researches undertaken by the United States Geologü;al Survey looking to the more effcient utilization of the coal in the United States through the reduction of waste in its extnidion, and were continued as part of further researches having regard to the conservation of the fuel resources of this country and to the lessening of injuries and fatalities in coal mining. Among other phases of the general problem to be studied were the origin of the gas whidi escapes into coal mines, its modes of occurrence in the coal and rock strata, and the conditions governing its outflow into the mines. The subject of relative danger from destructive explosions due to gas and coal dust in different mines belonging to different coal fields was to be one of the principal lines of investigation. But this work was barely under way when the series of unusually disastrous explosions in the Naomi, .Monongah, and Darr mines of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in December, 1907, afforded an exceptional occasion to observe the behavior of explosions on a large scale. Because of the opportunities for study afforded by these terrific explosions, the inquiry originally planned was d ¡verted to the more specific investigation of the conditions in tl10SC mines, and the examinations have been directed toward finding those qualities of gas and dust which were concerned in these explosions. The following discussion, therefore, consists essentially of a report on that subject; but it is far from being exhaustive, and is to be regarded as a preliminary outline of investigations which are still in progress. The first of the three mine explosions mentioned occurred in the Naomi mine of the United Coal Company, near Bellevernon, Pa., on Sunday, December 1, at 7.40 p. m. All the men who were within the mine at the time, fortunately only 34, were killed. Less than a week later there occurred in mines Nos. fì and 8 of the Fairmont Coal Company at Monongah, W. Va., the most disastrous mine explosion yet recorded in the annals of American mining. The mines were comparatively new and well laid out. Mine No.8 had been in operation only about two years and was the pride of the Fairmont Coal Company. Mine No.6 was first opened ahout four years earlier. In order to make it possible, in case of emergency, for either mine to be ventilated by the ventilating system of the other, the two sets of workings were connected underground. The F face heading of mine K o. 6 led direetly into No.2 north heading of No.8 mine. On Friday, Dcccmber 6, at about 10.30 in the morning, an explosion of unusual violcnce swept completely through both mines, pursuing its course throughout the numerous ramifications and bursting out of the two pit mouths, located It miles apart, nearly simultaneously. The slope of mine No.6 was only slightly damaged, but at the mouth of No.8 the destruction was very great. The fan was wrecked, the engine house was demolished, and mine timbers were blown across Monongahela River: As nearly as can be determined, 361 men were killed in the two mines by the explosion. .While the inspection of the Monongah mines was still in progress, on Thursday morning, December 19, at about 11.20, a similar explosion wrecked the Darr mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Company ut Jacobs Creek, Pu.; 238 men lost their lives in this explosion, which in number of casualties is second only to the :Monongah disustcr in the history of American mining. Of ull thc men in the mine at the , time of the explosion, only one mun, who happened to be within 100 feet of the ~iUrface on an old manway in a wet, unexploded portion of the mine, succeeded in escaping alive. The underground investigation of these mines was made in cooperation with Clarence Hall and ""Valter O. Snelling, of the United States Geological Survey, and James ""V. Paul, now of the Survey but at that time chief of the department of mines for vVest Virginia, to all of whom the author is greatly indebted for valuable assistance, suggestions, and advice. Mr. Paul will rcport on the nature of these explosions, the precipitating causes, their destructiveness, and the general cüliditions in these mines following the disasters. The present report is confined essentially to the laboratory examination of some of the explosive materials collected from these mines directly ufter the explosions.

Native asphalt was produced by three companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm, R. L. White Co., Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Colorado and Utah, was mined by two firms, American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California), and Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) closed its mining operation during the year.

The The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is continuing to investigate the behavior of fully grouted roof bolts in the weak roof rock of the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). This paper describes the results of three studies: • A series of 24 pull tests of bolts installed fully grouted and overcored to leave 12 inches of grouted bolt. The tests compared the pull-out performance of offset-head roof bolts with that of standard 5/8-inch bolts; • A second series of 24 tests that compared the pull-out loads obtained by bolts installed with 1 ft of resin (a Short Encapsulation Pull Test or SEPT) to that of fully grouted bolts overcored to leave only 12 inches of grouted bolt, and; • An investigation into the pressures generated during the installation of fully grouted resin bolts. All of the bolts installed and pulled were overcored and removed from the roof after the pull tests to allow inspection of the resin. The first study found that there was no significant difference in pullout load between the offset-head bolts and the standard bolts. The second study, comparing the SEPT bolts and the partially-overcored fully grouted bolts, indicated that SEPT can significantly underestimate bolt anchorage grip factor, suggesting that the SEPT is a conservative measure of actual bolt performance. Significant loss of resin to cracks in the roof was observed in the bolts overcored in the SRCM. The third study explored one possible explanation for the resin loss, high pressures generated during bolt installation. These tests employed bolts installed in strain gauged steel tubes. The results confirmed that significant pressures (greater than 4,000 psi) can be generated during bolt installation. The results of the pressure tests, combined with the observations of resin loss in bolts installed in the SRCM, suggest that under some circumstances resin loss and under-encapsulation could take place and lead to degraded bolt performance. Glove fingering was observed in all recovered bolts to various degrees. The limited comparative data suggested that the effect of glove fingering ranged from slight to moderate. Complete mixing of the resin was observed on all of the 40 bolts recovered (28 fully grouted and 12 SEPT). Australian and U.S. resins were compared and the Australian resins were observed to have much smaller catalyst compartment areas and lower resin viscosities. These differences are suggested as potential explanations for occasional resin mixing problems noted in Australian resin bolt installations.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the performance characteristics of a 30-day around-the-clock gasification-pelletizing test conducted in October and November of 1980 with North Dakota Indianhead lignite. Gasification was conducted in a commercial-size, 6.5-it-diam, Single-stage, fixed-bed, atmospheric pressure producer with a rated capacity of about 30 million Btu/hr. Iron oxide pellets made from a commercial hematite concentrate were fired with the low-Btu gas in a 2.8-ft-diam by 35-ft-long pilot plant rotary kiln at a rate of 900 lb of pellets per hour. Gasifier operations at fuel feed rates up to 3 tons of lignite per hour and hematite pellet induration with raw 160-Btu/std ft3 lignite gas are described.

This Bureau of Mines report analyzes data on the physical properties of quartzite rock from the Crescent mine, Coeur d?Alene mining district, Kellogg, Idaho, to demonstrate the use of multivariate techniques. After regression, factor, component, cluster, and discriminant analyses are discussed, these techniques are applied to the Crescent mine data. Three appendixes contain some of the required mathematical and statistical detail plus heuristic examples of three multivariate techniques --component, cluster, and discriminant analysis.

Conditions necessary to obtain optimum yield of useful products when coal is rapidly heated to extreme temperatures by laser irradiation were determined by the Bureau of Mines. Product distribution and yield were investigated as functions of several variables. Low-rank coals with high-volatile matter gave highest total gas yields. Medium-rank coals gave the highest yields of H2 and CA and low-rank coals gave highest yields of CO and C02. Macerals gave gases of approximately the same composition, but the total gas yield increased in the order fusinite, micrinite, vitrinite, and exinite. Total gas and C2H2 yields varied inversely with particle size. The addition of nominally inert gases such as Ar, He, N2 increased yields of H2, C2H2, and total gas. Metals such as nickel and platinum had little influence on the rate of coal decomposition. Total gas yield increased with total energy of irradiation, and the ratio of C2H2-CH4 increased with concentration of energy. A study was also made of the irradiation temperature, and a material balance was calculated.

Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. Their corresponding orientations are termed as the first principal grip angle (a1) and the second principal grip angle (a2). A series of experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Twelve

The Bureau of fines has tested a portable microseismic processor recorder at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, both in an environmentally controlled enclosure and, with minimal protection, in a working area of the mine. In both trials the device demonstrated effective and reliable data acquisition capabilities.
