Fifteen boride composites were synthesized by hot pressing and evaluated by physical and incendivity testing as non-sparking tool materials. The incendivity tests, conducted at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center, compared the boride compo-sites with standard cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide material used for coal cutter bits. Two titanium diboride composites and two zirconium diboride composites out-performed cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide in wear resistance and reduced tendency to cause ignitions. However, three of these candidates exhibited undesirable chipping. The remaining candidate, a TiB2-(Ni, Cu) composite, did not chip, nor did it cause ignitions at levels where cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide tools caused ignitions in the incendivity tests. Thus, this material appears to be a logical candidate for further development.

A new filter cassette is described which can be used with Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Units (CFR, Title 30, Part 74). The sealed cassette design reduces the chances of sample loss due to reverse flushing, impact or cassette opening. The filter capsule weight is approximately 400 milligrams and is stable for at least one year in storage. The alpha quartz content of the filter element is less than 5 nanograms per square millimeter of surface. The cassette is designed to be used with a new sampling head. The manufacturing costs of the new cassette will require an increase of approximately 30% in the selling price.

The purpose of this book is to provide an indication of what good hoisting practice is and how it might be achieved. To this end the book contains discussions of equipment and inspection and maintenance procedures developed and used by mining people in striving for safe, reliable hoisting equipment. Most of this information comes from domestic practice; the rest is foreign, notably from Canada. Most things discussed have long proved their general worth, and others promise to; a few are beginnings. However, nothing is conjectural or theoretical; the practices described herein are in use somewhere in the mining world. The stress is on equipment in use; it is not a design-guidelines manual. Nevertheless, there are some sections dealing with design material since it may be of value in a maintenance/ replacement sense. Mine hoisting installations encompass such a wide variety of equipment and conditions that it is impractical to specifically cover them all. This book mainly treats conventional systems using conventional components with some discussion of the more common unconventional (special) systems in use. There is no recognized definition for a "conventional" mine-hoisting system. Herein the term means those systems most commonly used in daily operations for transporting men, materials, and product-electrically driven drum and friction hoists, with guided conveyances running in vertical or inclined shafts. Beyond this, what "conventional" means is probably best illustrated by the topics discussed.

I. 3355)4/ dealt with convergence of roof and floor and movement of the surface accompanying and following extraction in a mechanized mine in which retreat of rib lines was rapid. The studies reported herein were made in a mine in which all the coal is loaded by hand, and movement of the rib lines was much slower in consequence. In choosing a site for this work, it was decided that the mine selected should have natural conditions akin to those of the first study and entirely different methods of working. To this end a cooperative agreement was made with the Crucible Fuel Co. through W. J. Whitaker, secretary, for conducting the work in the company?s Crucible mine, operating in the Pittsburgh bed in Greene County, Pa, This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as can be made.

Through contrasts of these grinding characteristics this paper to differences in related mineral products and in unlike products. For,example, in anticipation of the data to follow, although Joplin chert and Babeitt taconits are running mates in defying the best crushing machinery, taconite is one of the more docile and Joplin chert one of the most refractory mineral products ordinarily fed to a grinding Routine grinding tests on a great variety of ores and tabulation of the findings have been covered amply by Lennox 4/ and by Maxon 5/ and associates. In contrast to that work, the present paper is a record of random tests made over a long period, and each answered an urgent question at the moment. The work was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama. Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. Repeated exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of vibrating hand tools can result in the development of the disorder known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS; (1,3)). One of the hallmark symptoms of HAVS is cold-induced peripheral vasospasms that result in finger blanching (4). Although the vascular and neural pathology associated with vasospasms has been described, little is known about cellular mechanisms leading to this damage (4). To understand how vibration may alter vascular and neural physiology and anatomy, rats were exposed to a single bout of tail vibration and the molecular responses of neural and vascular tissues were measured to determine if there are immediate or sustained affects of vibration that may underlie longer term changes in physiology. Methods Experiment 1. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 32, 6 weeks of age) were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities. All procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in Broome-style restrainers, and securing their tails to a vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control rats were treated in the same manner, except that the tail platform was mounted on isolation blocks and not on a shaker. The vibration exposure was 125 Hz, 49 m/s2, for 4 h. Rats were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) 1 h or 24 hours after the exposure. RTqPCR was used to measure transcript levels for endothelin 1 (ET-1), the 3 forms of nitric oxide synthetase (NOS) NOS-1, NOS-2, NOS-3 and norepinephrine receptor subtypes 1D, 2A, 2C, in artery tissue, and to measure calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and nitric oxide synthase-1 (NOS-1) in ventral nerves. Data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n =24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained as described above. Animals were exposed to a single bout of restraint or vibration. Another group of animals served as cage controls. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure, and tail arteries were isolated and frozen. Reactive oxygen species ROS) were measured using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). Arteries were homogenized over ice in 1 ml of PBS with protease inhibitor cocktail, using a tissue tearer (Biospecs Products Inc. Racine, WI USA). The sample was split into two 0.5 ml samples. One set had PBS and the spin label hydroxyl-TEMPO [0.1 mM] added while the other set had hydroxyl-TEMPO [1.0 mM] plus the specific hydroxyl radical scavenger, dimethylthiourea (DMTU), added to confirm the presence of the hydroxyl radical. Samples were vortexed and then placed in a flat cell for ESR analysis. The ESR spectrometer settings were: receiver gain, 6.32 x 102; time constant, 0.02 s; modulation amplitude, 1.0 G; scan time, 20 sec; magnetic field, 3490 ± 100 G (2). Data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVAs.

This report, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of available safety assessment methods and their applicability to the mining industry. Standard safety analysis procedures were evaluated for relevance to the mining industry and mine operators' needs. The major safety concerns and needs of mine operators were identified through telephone contacts and a visit to a mine site. Safety assessment methods recommended for use by the mining Industry were also Investigated for potential adaptability to a user-interactive computer system. Several methods were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry; these techniques are described in a user's handbook produced as part of this project. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of these methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry. These methods, their advantages, disadvantages and resource requirements are described in the final project report. Recommended system safety analysis techniques facilitate an evaluation of total mine system safety and a determination of safety-related interactions among systems within a mine. The application of these methods to the mining industry could result in reductions in both the frequency and the consequences of mine accidents.

The electron optics, vacuum system, and sample stage assembly for the Bureau of Mines? electron probe X-ray spectrograph were purchased. Four scanning curved-crystal spectrometers, two reflection- and two transmission-type, were designed and constructed by the authors. The reflection spectrometers are placed in a vacuum chamber for measurement of long-wave-length X-radiation. Detection, pulse-amplitude discrimination, and recording circuits are provided for the simultaneous measurement of four X-ray spectral lines. Minimum spot size is approximately 2 microns in diameter at 30 kilovolts and a sample-to-ground current of 5 x 10-8 ampere. At this voltage and current the limit of detection with reflection spectrometers is less than 0.05 weight-percent for most elements. The limit of detection for elements determined by transmission-type spectrometers, evaluated at 35 kilovolts and 5 x 10-8 ampere, is approximately 0.1 weight--percent for all elements having excitation voltages below 20 kilovolts. In general, reflection spectrometers exhibited satisfactory but poorer resolution than the transmission type, resolution of the spectrometers being limited primarily by crystal imperfections, with greater mosaic structure being introduced by the grinding process for the reflection crystals. Several applications of the electron probe X-ray spectrograph are described. Analysis of a uranium-steel is discussed in detail to illustrate calculation of composition from measured X-ray intensities.

Most State enacting bodies have deemed it necessary to specify a maximum speed at which men may be hoisted or lowered in mine shafts. Since most mine cages are not closed in, as are passenger elevators in office buildings, and since, ordinarily, neither the starting tin g nor stopping of the cage is as general as that of these elevators, such regulations are all the more necessary for the comfort and safety of the men. It is also quite generally recognized that it is dangerous to over-crowd cages. Hence, a number of States have limited the number of men that may be on cage at one time.

To determine whether reflectors could substitute for the trip lights referred to in the Federal Mine Safety Code, the Bureau of Mines studied trip safety devices under simulated haulageway conditions. The noticeability of reflectors compared with trip lights and fluorescent panels was evaluated from distances of up to 850 feet with light source intensities of up to 1-6 foot-candles (ft c). Reflectors tested consisted of a reflective lens in a holder secured to a frame that can be attached to a trip. Reflectors were found to be suitable for use as a trip safety device. In fact, for the conditions in many underground haulageways some reflectors would be more effective than a permissible trip light.

The introduction and use of synthetic materials in various applications may lead to potential hazards from toxic, gaseous, decomposition products if these materials are subjected to conditions abnormal to their intended use, such as high temperatures or burning from accidental causes. This report covers an investigation of such possible hazards from toxic gases produced by the burning or thermal decomposition of some low-density, expanded, synthetic materials, three of which consisted of polyvinylchloride and one of acrylonitrile. In the production of certain expanded plastic materials, Chemical blowing agents frequently are used to produce a cellular structure. One of these blowing or foaming agents contains azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, which is designated in this report as PN. Information indicates that a product of decomposition of this blowing agent, formed in the blowing operation, is tetra-methyl-succino-nitrile, designated as TSN, Which is significantly toxic. Decomposition of the blowing agent, with release of its azo nitrogen, is represented by the following reaction:

The Bureau of Mines devised a procedure for selectively extracting platinum-group metals (PGM) and gold from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrate. The Stillwater Complex is the only major U.S. PGM resource. Development of a suitable extraction technique will contribute to its exploitation. The concentrate was roasted at 1,050° C to convert host base-metal sulfides to oxides and the PGM from sulfide minerals to their elemental states. The roasted concentrate was preleached with dilute sulfuric acid to remove easily soluble gangue minerals. After pre-leaching, the concentrate was slurried with 6M HCI and leached at ambient temperature and pressure with a strong-oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid, and a persulfate salt were the oxidants investigated. The two-stage leaching scheme ex-tracted up to 97 pct of the platinum, 92 pct of the palladium, and 99 pct of the gold from the roasted concentrate. The base metals were not solubilized and reported to the residue. No attempt was made to devise a procedure to recover the copper and nickel because they comprise less than 5 pct of the value of the concentrate. Viable techniques for recovering the precious metals from the pregnant solution were sulfide precipitation, cementation with nickel, or adsorption on activated carbon.

Interest in the composition of automobile exhaust gases has been greatly accelerated by recent studies that have indicated that these gases contribute to smog formation in urban areas. Several analytical methods have been published for the analysis of the hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases, but similar information has not been published on the analysis of the oxygenated compounds. This report presents procedures for chemical analyses of certain oxygenated compounds, procedures for sampling the exhaust gases for these analyses, and the analytical results of some experimental work in which these procedures were used. A stationary 1956 model, 170 horsepower, V-8, dynamometer-mounted engine, operated to simulate vehicular cruise conditions, was used for the study. Exhaust gases produced from a regular-grade Midcontinent gasoline during 15-40- , and 60-mile-per-hour cruise operations were analyzed by chemical methods for formaldehyde, total aldehydes, total carbonyls, total alcohols, carbon associated with the oxygenated compounds, and the oxides of nitrogen. Experimental results indicate: 1. The range of concentrations of the total of the functional groups of oxygenated compounds, expressed as moles per million moles of water-free exhaust gases, is about 90-100; the concentrations increase with engine speed. 2. Aldehydes comprise about 80-90 mole- percent of the total of the oxygenated groups, and formaldehyde accounts for about 50 mole-percent of the total aldehydes. 3. The order of magnitude of the concentration of the carbonyls is the same as that for the aldehydes, indicating that ketones are not a major group. A colorimetric test indicates that methyl ketones Constitute about 2 mole-percent of the oxygenated compounds.

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as 1892, at Point Albino, Canada.4 The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence urea by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of west Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is mane of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen sulphide. The programs are interactive in that they prompt the user for input data and allow correction and modification to be made. The programs read data from the results of cone penetrometer soundings and convert the data to values of tan ø. Mean, standard deviation, skew, kurtosis, linear trends and autocorralation are computed by the programs.
