Electrokinetic soil remediation by electroosmosis and ionic migration is restricted to soluble sub-stances. At a higher pH, the soil particles sorb more heavy metals, such as cadmium, than at a lower pH and the precipitation reactions of heavy metals are promoted. Both mechanisms make heavy metals immobile, rendering clean up more difficult and electrokinetic extraction inefficient. There-fore, the acidification of soils is very important to increase the clean up efficiencies of heavy metals, such as cadmium by electrokinetic method from contaminated soils. In the present study, acidification of soils and cadmium transport are predicted with a numerical method in which electrical flow is coupled with hydraulic flow, and the sorption process in the soils is induced in the model. The effects of some factors such as electrode configuration, electric field strength and electrode spacing for saturated soils are investigated using this numerical model. The results obtained this study are summarized as follows: The two-dimensional electrode configurations containing cathode surrounded by three or more anodes rapidly acidify the soils and remove cadmium from soils compared with one-dimensional electrode configuration. However, two-dimensional electrode configurations develop spots of inactive electric field between cathodes. A larger electrode spacing increases the processing time required, and it was also found that a larger electric field strength reduced the processing time required.

The modelling of bath type furnaces tends to be either fundamental in nature or total empirical "black box models". While models of the first kind are robust, they tend to lack accuracy, in cases where they are to be used for process control, and may take an overly long in development time. On the other hand, black box models tend to lack robustness of prediction for all circumstances and tend to be limited to interpolate based on historical data. While this may very often provide short-term accuracy, the models may have problems with stability in the long term. Moreover, the model structure may not reflect any of the fundamental properties of the system and remains opaque to fundamental analysis. The aim of the model development is in obtaining a model that have robustness, high accuracy, a short development time and which is adaptive to a changing environment. The models are specifically developed for on-line decision support or control of furnaces. The modelling approach is evaluated for a chromite bath smelting furnace. The role of systems analysis, mass balance smoothing, thermodynamic analysis are integrated into one generic algorithm for bath type furnaces. Therefore, this paper argues that to understand complex metallurgical furnaces a hybrid approach is the only method to fully grasp the intricacies of metallurgy, to improve operations, economics as well as environmental performance.

Data from autogenous and semi-autogenous tests in a 1.67m diameter mill have been analysed in terms of a new model for rock abrasion. This model defines specific rate as the rate of production of fines (material less than 13mm) per unit mass of rock, where the term “rock” is applied to all ore pieces of ore coarser than the grate size. In most cases, an allowance for preliminary rounding and cleavage was made. A method has been developed to analyse steady-state data, using piecewise fitting to the cumulative size distributions. The model was compared to the well-established models, which are based on the population balance method. The specific rate increased for all rock sizes as the volume of 100mm balls in the mill was increased. Tests using a coarser feed and smaller balls provided further evidence that once rocks are rounded, abrasion is due to localised surface damage, caused by impacts, rather than rotational shear. An allowance for rapid rounding of jagged rocks, followed by less rapid abrasion of rounded pebbles was also tested, but the analysis was not conclusive. The average specific rate is a useful measure of the capacity of a primary mill. The effect of power intensity (kW/t of ore) was also investigated as a means of extrapolating the pilot-plant data to large production mills.

The Separation in Froth (SIF) technique is based on the idea that the pulp is fed directly onto the froth layer prepared on the surface of liquid medium providing an effective method for separation of coarse particles up to a few millimeters size. Thus the SIF process can result in substantial savings in grinding energy and flotation chemicals. In this work flotation of apatite, calcite and silicate minerals from various industrial sources was investigated using laboratory and pilot plant-scale SIF machines. Flotation of diamonds was also investigated on laboratory scale. It was observed that all the minerals mentioned above can be successfully floated up to about 3 mm particle size. Beneficiation tests with the coarse fractions of classification circuits indicated that final grade calcite concentrate can be obtained with over 90% recovery in one SIF step in this grain size (typically 0,1 to 1,5 mm). Similarly, substantial upgrading of coarse apatite was achieved without grinding it to the fineness required by conventional flotation. SIF could also be applied to the recovery of coarse apatite from the tailings of a conventional flotation process. The capacity measured in the pilot plant test runs for a 1 m2 cell was typically 30 t/m2h. Presently, a full-scale process using the SIF technology is being installed for coarse apatite recovery.

"In flotation, depressants are used to reduce the amount of gangue that reports to the concentrate and hence increase the selectivity of the flotation process. At the University of Cape Town extensive batch flotation tests are carried out to evaluate industrial depressants and standard procedures have been developed over the years.This study was conducted in order to develop an improved method for comparing depressants using machine vision as an aid. The modified method of batch flotation involved a test with prolonged intervals between scraping to allow more time for the froth to build up and mature.This method of testing showed increased differences between the flotation performance obtained as represented by grade recovery curves for carboxymethyl cellulose and guar depressants when compared to the standard method of testing with shorter scraping intervals. The improvement was attributed to reduced entrainment resulting from longer drainage time in the froth and therefore yielded a better test for comparing depressants on the basis of true gangue flotation with minimized entrainment. As expected, the sulphide recoveries were unaffected by the change in method. The machine vision system also added to the information obtained during these tests by recording bubble size trends throughout the tests which were later analyzed and related to the amount of flotable gangue in the froth. Modifications are recommended to improve the usefulness of machine vision in batch flotation."

"Due to multiple experiences in the field of planning and engineering of processing plants for secondary materials the Chair for Processing and Recycling of Solid Waste Materials decided to develop a software tool that supports the engineering and the planning of the basic layout of processing plants for secondary material flows. The detailed description of the material flow and its characteristic parameters is one of the main tasks to be worked out and should be considered as the basis for representative simulation results.The description of the material flow and its characteristic parameters is based on a fraction vector containing 12 material fractions. This is a compromise between a detailed material flow description and a compact and therefore time-extensive calculation model. Each material fraction is characterized by 15 parameters, which can be edited with the help of an easily accessible user-interface. In addition to basic parameters like ignition loss, water content and calorific value more parameters like the material fraction-specific particle-size distribution are contained. Using the model library SimuRec, the processing success and the recovery of complex processing plants for secondary materials can be predicted."

The main deposits of gold-sulfide ores of Russia are characterized as refractory raw material with the non-uniform finely-interspersed sulfide mineralization, submicron gold, the low gold content (3-5 ppm) and non-uniform distribution of the gold associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. These ores show low indicators of extraction of gold and silver at cyanidation. Flotation is one of the basic technological procedures of processing of gold sulfide ores however simultaneous presence of pyrite and arsenopyrite and lack of effective methods of their selection constrains application possibility of flotation schemes because of rigid requirements to flotation concentrates under the arsenic content and practically excludes smelting of pyrite concentrate. The main losses of precious metals at flotation technologically are concentrated in thin classes (up to 15 %) demonstrating an inefficiency of standard reagent modes. For an estimation of expediency and possibility of application of selective flotation of pyrite and arsenopyrite a scientific substantiation of the mechanism and criteria of selection of gold-bearing ferrous sulfides of various material structure is developed and for difficultly divided pairs of sulfides with close technological properties the new selective reagents providing effective extraction of gold from hard-to-beneficiate ores are designed. The original technique for modifying surface composition of natural sulfides by nano-sized Au is worked out and the mechanism of selective adsorption of new reagents ? oxypropyl ester of diethyl-dithiocarbamatic acid (OPDTC) and oak bark extract (OBE) on Au-bearing sulfide minerals is revealed. Formation of almost insoluble OPDTC-Au compounds is defined by methods of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and UV-spectroscopy. Application of developed reagent modes using new reagents have been tested in laboratory conditions at flotation gold-sulfide ores samples and collective concentrate probes providing high extraction of gold and improved quality of the concentrate (less than 2 % As). "Fine valuable particles are often lost to flotation tailings streams due to inefficient collection by air bubbles as well as passivation of surfaces by oxidation and slimes. The application of high-shear hydrodynamic cavitation devices (HCDs) to overcome this problem has already proven to be a considerable success in the industry. This paper details the results of further investigations that were undertaken at Mintek to better understand the mechanisms involved when preconditioning feed slurries in an HCD. By promoting inter-particle attrition and conditions of high shear within the reactor, cleaning of particle surfaces is enhanced as well as the formation of superfine (nano) bubbles which are believed to aid their agglomeration and subsequent collection by normal sized bubbles. In order to broaden the envelope of understanding with regard to application of the technology, rather than tailings material as investigated earlier, a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM) UG2 ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa was used in this study. The results of a series of batch flotation tests in a 10L Denver cell are presented, being conducted after the feed has been subjected to different methods of preconditioning. It was demonstrated that the preconditioning significantly improved the flotation kinetics of the PGMs, the optimum being obtained after around 20 passes through the reactor. This was accompanied by a much enhanced recovery-mass pull relationship and a significant improvement in the grade-recovery response. Significantly, the selectivity between the PGM and the deleterious chromite (expressed as Cr2O3) gangue more than doubled under these conditions. Modelling of the PGM data by means of the modified Kelsall model indicated that both the fast and slow floating rate constants were improved.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the flotation recovery of fine and ultrafine particles, typically less than 10 micron in size, is a challenge (Yoon et al., 1989; Miettenin et al., 2010). Although these particles are typically well liberated, due to their very low mass and inertia, the collision efficiency with air bubbles is low as a result of the inability of particles to penetrate the liquid streamlines around bubbles. Hence the probability of contact is often regarded as the ratedetermining step in flotation of ultrafine particles. Introducing more power into conventional flotation machines is likely to solve only part of the problem, as conventional mechanisms are effective only to a point in terms of shear and micro-turbulence. Further challenges are posed by the treatment of low-grade or oxidised tailings dump material, where valuables are passivated due to prolonged exposure to the atmosphere or slimes. Over the years, various mitigating strategies have been investigated, including the use of dissolved air flotation (Martinez-Gomez et al., 2013; Calgaroto et al., 2015), shear flocculation (Subrahmanyam and Forssberg, 1990), seed or carrier flotation (Tabosa and Rubio, 2010), sonication to clean particle surfaces (Aldrich and Feng, 1999; Newell et al., 2006), high intensity conditioning (Bulatovic and Salter, 1989; Chen et al., 1999; Tabosa and Rubio, 2010), and various electrochemical approaches such as changing Eh in order to promote formation of dixanthogen, dissolution of oxidation products by lowering the pH, activation by sulphidisation (Newell et al., 2006; Becker et al., 2014), and the use of alternative collectors."

Various factors that control the natural flotability of talc, including differences due to crystal face and edge effects, were delineated. For study of talc depression phenomena, dextrin was used as a model depressant. For the enhancement of talc flotation, dodecylammonium acetate (DDAA) was used as the collector. The interaction of DDAA with talc was assessed by flotation experiments and electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements, from which the role of hydrophobic bonding can be demonstrated. The results presented in this paper provide useful information on how the crystal chemistry and surface chemistry control the electrical double layer, adsorption phenomena, wettability, and flotation behavior of talc in aqueous media.

"Biopolymers, produced from cellulosic biomass, have promising prospects of application as depressants in mineral processing. In this study, three different types of biopolymers (i.e., DP-1775, DP-1777 and DP-1778) were used to study the effect of polymer structure on flotation of un-activated pyrite, copper activated pyrite and chalcopyrite. It was found that the depressing effect of DP-1775 and DP-1778 was much stronger than that of DP-1777, and pyrite was depressed to a greater content than chalcopyrite with the same biopolymer at the same dosage. The biopolymer concentration played a vital role in determining the degree of depression. For each biopolymer, the higher the concentration, the greater the minerals were depressed. The mechanism underpinning the depressing effect of these biopolymers was explored in this paper. The concentration of biopolymers could determine the properties of the adsorption layer and the confirmation of biopolymer chains on mineral surfaces. The biopolymer molecules may aggregate when polymer concentration was over a critical value. Molecular weight and functional groups of biopolymers were the key factors characterizing the depressing capability of different biopolymers. Differences between the tested biopolymers and features of the adsorbed layer might account for the observed trends in ability to depress pyrite and chalcopyrite flotation. The greater depressing effect of biopolymers on pyrite over chalcopyrite might result from the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on pyrite over chalcopyrite."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. "Zircon is an important mineral for ceramic, foundry, casting, and refractory applications; and it is the worlds primary source for zirconium. Zircon can also contain large and valuable proportions of other valuable metals, such as rare earth elements and hafnium. The Nechalcho deposit (Northwest Territories, Canad), is a hard rock REE deposit, which looks to recover zircon for its Zr and REE content. In this deposit, zircon is finely disseminated and associated with predominately silicate gangue minerals. Most of the work to date has focused on the beneficiation of mineral sand deposit, which typically remove silicate gangue minerals through physical separation steps. Therefore, the separation of zircon from silicate gangue, such as quartz, by flotation, has received little attention. This work used zeta potential measurements and microflotation experiments to understand the interaction between zircon and six different collectors (sodium oleate, sodium dodecyl sulphate, dodecylamine, SM 15, K-octyl hydroxamate and Florrea 7510). The results were compared with those of quartz. This study indicated that selective separation of zircon from quartz without the use of selective depressants or activators is likely challenging. The findings suggested sodium oleate and SM 15 only offered selective flotation of zircon in highly acidic conditions. Separation by the flotation of quartz is possible using sodium dodecyl sulphate, dodecylamine and K-octylhydroxamate. However, selective separation is highly dependant on collector dosage, for dodecylamine, and the selective activation of quartz, for sodium dodecyl sulphate and K-octyl hydroximate. Florrea 7510 offered poor recoveries for both zircon and quartz.INTRODUCTIONZircon (ZrSiO2) is a nesosilicate mineral which has a wide variety of applications, due to its hardness, opaqueness and resistance to heat and corrosion. Its major end uses are in ceramic, foundry, casting, and refractory applications (Bedinger, 2017). Zircon is also the most abundant zirconium (Zr) bearing mineral in the earths crust and is the principal economic source of Zr (primarily used in alloys for heat and corrosion resistance) and zirconia (ZrO2) (primarily used in ceramics) (Bedinger, 2017; Milnes and Fitzpatrick, 1989). Zircon forms in silicate melts and can often contain large proportions of other valuable metals such as rare earth elements (REE), and hafnium (zircon is the primary source of hafnium) (Bedinger, 2017; Belousova et al., 2002; Orlova, 2007). A common chemical formula showing the range of substitution in zircon is (Zr,Hf,Th,U,REE,Ca,Fe,Nb,Ta)(Si,P)O4 (Orlova, 2007)."

The bioremediation capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells was investigated for the biosorption of lead ions from aqueous solution. The various parameters such as pH, kinetics, biomass loading and concentration of lead affecting the biosorption process were studied. Complete bio removal of lead could be achieved for an initial concentration of 12.4 mg/L at pH 6.2, corresponding to typical industrial effluents. The biosorption isotherm followed Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy (?G) was determined to be-30.8 kJ/mole, indicative of chemisorption between the functional groups of the bacterial surface and lead. The biosorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second order model. The possible mechanisms of interaction of lead with the bacterial cells are discussed. A carbon paste electrode with a coating of biomass was developed for lead ion detection in aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetric technique. Concentrations of lead up to 5x10-5 M could be successfully detected using cyclic voltammetry, which could be improved to a detection limit of 1x10-8 M adopting differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). "More than 85% of phosphorous reserves in China occur as middle-low grade phosphate of sedimentary origin. The main gangues are dolomite, quartz, silicates, and clays. The characteristics of minerals are finely disseminated. Flotation results have shown that the floatability of apatite of this kind of ore is much worse than that of igneous and metasedimentary origin because of its high specific surface area. Although some effective depressants, such as naphthalene sulfonate and phenanthrene sulfonate, are used to decrease the MgO content in the P2O5 concentrate, its presence is still high (about 2%) in the Chinese concentrates. Meanwhile, the wastewater may cause some environmental problems. Batch flotation results and measurements of specific surface area and CO3 2- have revealed that there is a relationship between the floatability of apatite and the surface area.A two-stage flotation flowsheet, which includes a combination of direct and reverse flotation, was developed for beneficiating sedimentary phosphate ores. The direct flotation was conducted in an alkaline medium and most of the apatite and carbonate minerals floated leaving quartz and siliceous gangue in the sink. In the reverse flotation circuit, the floated product was further beneficiated in an acidic medium to eliminate the carbonate as a float product. Apart from the high quality of concentrate, the two-stage flotation also facilitated the treatment and the recycling of wastewater. A wastewater recycling procedure was developed and tested in a continuous flotation process. The key factor was the careful selection of effective and non-toxic reagents."

"The present research work aims at disclosing the dependence of flotation concentrate recovery and its grade on the physically adsorbed collecting reagent properties, viz., surface pressure in the reagent film at gas-liquid interface, velocity of reagent species spreading over the said interface, relation between interaction energies of collector molecules within a film and with water dipoles.When using a single collecting reagent it is possible to improve the flotation concentrate grade in two ways, namely, by reducing collector consumption rate or using a weaker reagent. According to the proposed mechanism, a decrease in the physically sorbed species of the collector leads to a decrease in the rate of removal of the kinetic restriction of a flotation contact formation. As a result, the recovery of the useful component is reduced and the content of valuable components in the flotation concentrate is increased. The relationship between the spreading velocity of physically sorbed species at the gas-liquid interface and the recovery and quality of the flotation concentrate has been experimentally proved. Reduction in collector consumption lowered the valuable component recovery at a higher grade of the concentrate.The reasons were established for a rise of valuable content in the flotation concentrate if a weaker collector was used. It is justified that the use of a weaker collecting reagent with a shorter hydrocarbon fragment declines physically sorbed species of collector. The spreading velocity of collector derivatives at gas-liquid interface tends to lower along with less participation physically sorbed species of collector in formation of a flotation aggregate. The spreading velocity is determined for products of interaction between butyl-and ethyl-xanthates and lead nitrate at gas-liquid interface. It is found that the spreading velocity of butyl-xanthate derivatives is higher than that of ethylxanthate derivatives.The research work gets insight into the nature of relation between useful component content in the flotation concentrate and the useful component recovery. It is pointed out that adjusting the collecting activity of a collector makes it possible to influence a useful component content in the froth product thus gaining a compromise between wanted grade and recovery parameters."

"For gold leaching of oxide ores, the optimum cyanide : oxygen ratio is approximately 106 mg/L NaCN : 10 mg/L O2 (6.9:1 by mole). In sulphide ores, galvanic coupling of the gold with the electrically conductive sulphides significantly increases this ratio such that leaching may occur in a relatively low dissolved oxygen (DO) environment.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONGold leaching in a carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) circuit is driven by the supply of cyanide and oxygen, as described by Elsner’s equation (1):• 4Au + 8CN- + O2 + 2H2O ? 4Au(CN)2 - + 4OH- (1)Equation 1 suggests that the ideal molar cyanide : oxygen ratio should be 8:1, or 122.5 mg/L NaCN to 10 mg/L of DO. It is generally accepted however, that oxygen is not completely reduced to hydroxide at the gold surface, and that equation (2) better represents the gold leaching reaction (Marsden and House, 1992):• 4Au + 8CN- + 2O2 + H2O ? 4Au(CN)2 - + 2OH- + H2O2 (2)Additionally, since gold leaching is limited by either the diffusion of cyanide or oxygen to the gold surface (Habashi, 1993), then the relative diffusion rates of cyanide and oxygen must also be taken into account. Marsden and House (1992) suggest that the ideal molar cyanide : oxygen ratio is 6:1, while a more recent investigation using laboratory and plant observations (Heath and Rumball, 1998) suggested a molar ratio of 6.9:1.In practice, although a cyanide : oxygen mole ratio of 6.9:1 applies to some circuits, there are many instances when this is not the case.In sulphide ores, galvanic coupling of the gold with the electrically conductive sulphides significantly increases this ratio. Galvanically connected sulphides, and possibly carbon, provide a large surface area for oxygen reduction. As the cathode surface area increases, the oxygen concentration required to sustain the same rate of gold oxidation decreases proportionately.Galvanically connected particles may be composite particles, however they may simply be liberated sulphides in the same suspension as the gold. Particle collisions within a slurry are sufficient to provide momentary galvanic connection (Greet, 1995)."

The adsorption of heterocyclic collectors such 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO), 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and their derivatives on pyrite form a basis in understanding the flotation reactivity that may be applicable in a wide range of sulphide minerals. This study uses a computational and experimental approach to determine the heat of adsorption of MBT, MBO, MBI and modified MBT collectors onto pyrite surfaces. Computational calculations found that the adsorption energies were in the order: MBO > MBI > MBT. The heterocyclic collectors were adsorbed in their thiolate form on the surface. In the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the MBT adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur atom, while MBO and MBI adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur and N atoms onto the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted, where the MBT exocyclic sulphur atom bridged on the 5- coordinated Fe and surface 2-coordinated sulphur atoms, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. In the case of MBO and MBI, dissociation of the exocyclic sulphur atom from the collector occurred with subsequent interaction with the surface 5-cordinated Fe and 2-coordinated S atoms. This resulted in the collector carbon atom adsorbing on the surface 2-coordinated S atom, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The adsorption of the modified MBT was found to be more exothermic than the MBT, which showed that introduction of a –CS2 group on the exocyclic sulphur atom improved the affinity of MBT on the surface, and was thus a better flotation collector. The computational results were supported by experimental enthalpy of adsorption measurements and microflotation tests. The chemistry of the heterocyclic thioamides is complicated by the fact that they can exist in a number of tautomeric and ionic forms at different pH’s. This is discussed in relation to the flotation and calorimetric data.

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. "This research represents a shift away from empirical models that lock the industry into 50-year old inefficiencies with little response to operating variability. The mechanistic and intrinsically dynamic mill model under development steps up to a new paradigm using the latest computing capabilities and physical understanding of breakage and transport to transform predictive capabilities for design, optimisation and on-line control with variable feed. The milling process is broken down into discrete sub-processes, each of which can be modelled as an object in the whole model and in the model code. These objects can be upgraded or exchanged without having to rewrite or restructure the remainder of the code. Sub-processes include: feed into mill; transport along mill; presentation to impacting events; range of impacting forces; probability of being impacted in different zones in the mill as a function of particle size and density; suspension in slurry; and discharge out of the mill. The unit and processes surrounding the mill (feed and recycle conveyors, slurry pump and pipe, cyclone and recycle crusher) have also been modelled, in order to incorporate the effect of recirculating load coming from a cyclone or a recycle pebble crusher, respectively for ball mills or SAG mills. Each unit is modelled dynamically and PID controllers have been added to control pumping flowrate from sump and water addition for cyclone feed dilution. The paper demonstrates the predictive capability of a dynamic, mechanistic model and is used to test the sensitivity to the sub-processes, comparing different formulations and highlighting the aspects that require further development. Validation on pilot tests and application to industrial data is presented. This approach is currently undergoing industrial trial on sites, for use in on-line model-informed process control. Considerable further development is required to incorporate the full mechanistic structure planned for this model."

This paper presents the performance study of sag mill in the processing of gold ore. Deterioting ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the SAG mills. Today?s high capacity Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills expand vast amounts of energy and in doing so consume tons of shell liners and steel balls, while processing ore. Semi-autogenous (SAG) mill performance is influenced by ball charge, feed properties, shell, grate, and pulp lifter design. In the performance study of SAG mill, based on the results obtained it can be observed that SAG mill performed better at feed size +4 inch and grinding media consumption 0.90kg/mt. In the present study the effect of crusher bypass on SAG mill performance, an immediate drop of throughput ranging from 10-20tph is observed.
