Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonne of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (300 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 130 machine-years of operation at locations in North America and Europe. ST has also installed separators for the beneficiation of industrial minerals in North America and Europe. The technology has been successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, barite, and potash.

A common problem in Gas Treatment Centers (GTC) from primary aluminium smelters is the temperature of the gas to be treated : above a threshold, filtering media are irreversibly damaged. The traditional way of dealing with high gas temperature is to dilute with fresh air, which implies over sizing - and therefore higher cost for - the GTC in order to have the capacity to treat this dilution air without compromising on pot suction. A system was developed which decreases gas temperature without having to use dilution air. This system is based on water pulverization in gas collectors. The water vaporization leads to a temperature decrease of the gas. A pilot system was trialed in our R&D unit. Satisfactory results led to the development of an industrial system based on Envirocare equipment (partnership), which was trialed in our production plant in Tomago (NSW, Australia). This patented system was then generalized in this plant, which is now using it with success during austral summer.

The Nunavik Nickel project began ramp-up of a new ore body (Expo) in November 2014. This new deposit is significantly more competent than the previous ore type milled (i.e., the plant moved from a feed with a BWI of 12.2 kWh/t to predominantly material with a BWI of 19.6 kWh/t). Despite circuit changes made in advance of the Expo ore ramp-up (grinding media size, mill loading/power draw, and cyclone configuration) the throughput of the plant was bottlenecked at 90% of targeted throughput with multiple stoppages to grind-out the primary mill due to excessive circulating loads. During this time, the secondary milling circuit was under-utilised: therefore the focus for debottlenecking plant production became increasing the product size of primary milling. Given the scope of changes already made to the circuit, it was decided to test the mill in open circuit. The milling changes were modelled using the Molycop Tools package to identify potential problems. In the modelling and plant trial it was apparent that the ball size in the secondary grinding circuit was inadequate, resulting in pebbling. The power draw of the secondary mill was brought up to minimize pebbling and the average ball size was increased. The switch to open circuit primary milling permitted a significant augmentation in plant tonnage. While the overall grinding efficiency decreased using the open circuit configuration, the ability to increase throughput made it the clear operating choice.

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada constructed a beneficiation complex in Sept-Iles, Quebec, to concentrate and pelletize earthy red hematite iron ores from the Knob Lake area. The plants were scheduled for initial production during the first quarter of 1973.Many problems have been experienced to date. Difficulties in controlling the process, excessive mechanical failures, design deficiencies and manpower-staffing problems have caused an extended start-up. The problems are now essentially solved and, with the completion of some additional minor modifications, it is expected that the plants will be producing premium iron ore pellets at or near rated capacity within the next immediate period."

"As the next century draws near, new mine properties must be brought into production to replace existing operations that are approaching their economic life. This paper presents some of the critical technical issues being addressed by Manalta Coal Ltd. as they strive to bring the Telkwa Coal Project near Smithers, BC into production during the year 2000. The mine is planned to produce between 1.0 to 1.5 million tonnes per year of medium volatile coal for export to overseas thermal and PCI markets. IntroductionManalta Coal Ltd. (Manalta) is proposing the development and operation of a surface coal mine and associated infrastructure approximately six kilometres southwest of the village of Telkwa, British Columbia (Fig. 1). The infrastructure consists of a coal washing facility, tailings disposal area, clean coal haul road, access road and rail loadout facility. Over a 25-year period, the mine is expected to produce between 25 and 37 million clean tonnes of coal primarily for the export market.To achieve public and governmental approval for the development, the project will be reviewed under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. Manalta entered the formal Assessment process in February 1, 1997 with the submission of an Application for a Project Approval Certificate for the Telkwa Coal Project."

"Gold occurs as native metal, in electrum, and in a telluride mineral in quartz carbonate veinlets of three vein systems at the Ross Mine, northern Ontario. The 14 Vein System is made up predominantly of concordant veinlets within layered ankeritic dolomite stratabound by, and conformable with, andesite tuff Individual veinlets contain pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, tennantite, pearceite, proustite, native gold and electrum in a matrix of quartz, dolomite, ankerite and calcite. The 2B Vein System is made up of both concordant and discordant veinlets within andesite tuffs. The veinlets contain pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, bornite, tennantite and free gold in quartz, calcite and dolomite. The 18 Vein System is comprised of stockwork veinlets in and around intrusive syenite which has both sharp and gradational contacts with enclosing andesite tuff The veinlets contain pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, native gold and calaverite. Sulphide and silicate minerals in veinlets and wall rocks are stable assemblages for the regional metamorphism of greenschist rank. ,The 14 Vein System is interpreted as a metalliferous siliceous carbonate chemical sediment, the components of which were leached from the underlying volcanic rocks by convecting sea water and subsequently deposited on the sea floor between the extrusion of flows and pyroclastic rocks. Subsequent regional metamorphism and intrusions remobilized and redistributed the syngenetic stratabound material into dilatant fractures in adjacent tuff, as in the 2B and the 18 vein systems."

This paper outlines the position and capabilities of Western Canada&apos;s bituminous coal industry, and indicates the increasing importance of Japan as an export market. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Following this, iron ore gradually found a market in Japan, with exports usually based on long-term contracts. "The meso-structure of real soil consists of numerous particles with different sizes, while the traditional reconstruction method of quartet structure generation set (QSGS) produce relatively uniform soil particles resulting in significant discrepancy between the actual structure and reconfiguration model. In order to remedy the deficiency, the QSGS is improved by considering the influence of porosity and autocorrelative function of soil, which make the models closer to the real soil. Based on the reconfiguration model, Lattice Boltzmann method is combined in the algorithm to conduct further simulation of fluid flow in soil pores. The D2Q9 model is applied to construct the two dimensional model for simulating mesoscopic seepage field of saturated soil by setting the non-equilibrium extrapolation scheme at the inlet and outlet boundary, and the bounce-back scheme at the soil particles boundary as well as the left and right boundary. According to the case study, the proposed program is realized to simulate mesoscopic seepage field of reconstructed soil with constant inlet seepage velocity. The results show that the seepage direction of soil is along the passage with good connectivity, therefore the permeability is controlled by these passages. The seepage velocity in such channels is faster than in bad connectivity channels. Even if the channel has larger pores, the seepage velocity is still small. INTRODUCTIONUnderstanding the seepage mechanism in porous materials is significant in both theoretical and engineering problems. As a typical porous media, soil consists of solid particles and voids, which form connected channels allowing water to flow through. Such seepage in soil exists widely among geotechnical project of slope, foundation pit, and tunnel, etc. Meanwhile, a number of engineering accidents are caused by limited knowledge of seepage characters in soil (Huang, 2006; Liu, 2013). The conventional method in describing seepage features mostly based on the parameter of permeability, which is a macro statistic mean evaluating the whole connectivity of soil. Obviously, this parameter cannot exactly reflect the details of how water flows through the inner soil structure, especially the flow velocity in local mesoscopic area, hence is unable to represent the actual seepage properties. Therefore, it is necessary to develop mesoscopic approaches to fully study the seepage mechanisms."

"The large low-grade Copper Mountain deposit is located in the northern portion of the Gaspé Cooper Mines property. It is approximately 1 mile north of the Needle Mountain deposit. The orebody outlined to date lies in the top 1,000 feet of the Grande Greve formation. Chalcopyrite occurs in association with pyrite and quartz in small veinlets and numerous fractures. The deposit is immediately adjacent and parallel to a quartz-feldspar dyke and may be associated with a nearby porphyry stock. Stratigraphy, alteration and structure appear to have played an important role in ore deposition."

In 2003, Phelps Dodge Mining Company decided to pursue the design and construction of a Central Analytical Laboratory to provide chemical analyses for their Arizona and New Mexico operations. This centralized approach was selected in place of refurbishing six (6) older laboratories that operated at the various Phelps Dodge sites, and which would not have permitted full automation and use of robotics. The new lab was designed by the Process Technology Center (PTC) Material Characterization Group in cooperation with IMP Group. The Central Analytical Service Center (CASC) encompasses fully automated sample preparation of blast holes and geological samples weighing up to 15 kg/sample. The CASC also includes the first "wet chemistry module" worldwide to be operated by robotics systems to perform Total Cu, Acid Soluble Cu, and Quick Leach Tests (QLT), and a fully automated lab for electrowon copper cathode. The new lab also offers flexibility for handling specialty samples and analyses by either semi-automated or manual mode. Data handling and transfer is accomplished using the commercially available StarLIMS system. Commissioning was accomplished within five (5) months of startup during which the CASC also handled 86% of a full production load. The 24/7 lab operation has already exceeded its design capacity, has achieved considerable savings in operating cost, reduced sample preparation errors, and significantly increased analytical quality.

Tailing Dams Three types of dam have been structed to impound tailings from the Allenby mill: 1.- By classifier unit 2.- By earth dam 3.- By direct deposition of tailings The first type, which includes two dams, was built across a shallow valley which sloped down to Similkameen river, just below the mill site. Two earth embankments, one below the other, were built across the valley. Tailings were then piped to Akins classifiers mounted on wooden wheels. The classifiers were set up at one side of the valley and gradually moved ahead on the sand embankment created by the sand discharge from these classifiers, the slime overflow going to settli.ng ponds formed by the dams. Decanting wells were built in the settling ponds by placing four six-by-six timbers vertically in the ground, two feet apart, to which two-by-six tongue-and-groove boards were nailed. The elevations of the ponds were raised, as required, by nailing additional two-by-six boards on the well and bolting on more six-by-six timbers when required. The bottoms of the wells were attached to a covered launder made of three-inch lumber laid on a one per cent grade. This launder carried the overflow through the dam. The second type of dam was built across a long, narrow valley, known as Hitchen&apos;s Flat, the upper ~n d of which was about 2½ miles north of the mill. This valley, an ideal tailings site, was 4,000 feet long and from 600 to 800 feet wide. An earth embankment with a concrete spillway through the top was built approximately 28 feet high across the lower end of this valley. Tailings were then dumped into the upper end of valley, with no further expense until the basin was filled up to the level of the flume where this entered the valley. When the upper end of the valley was filled to this point there was still room for more tailings at the lower end. Therefore, a pump was installed to elevate the tailings to build a wall around the upper end of the valley by depositing sands from a launder built up on 20 foot supports and sloping both ways from the pumping station around the upper end of the basin.

"To understand the operation of jigs and other separating processes based on differences in gravity, it is desirable to analyse the motion of various particles in given media under specific conditions. A summary of the earlier theories shows that they lead to unsatisfactory or excessively complicated formulae in cases such as coal jigging. By adopting a simplified theory of the motion of particles in a fluid, the size and duration of the initial accelerated motion of a particle falling in hindered settling can be calculated. Based on this mathematical analysis, examples referring to actual coal jigging practice show that it is desirable to prolong and/or repeat, as frequently as possible, the optimum conditions corresponding to an effective acceleration of the particles. The separation is then obtained according to gravity rather than to particle dimensions, as would be the case if the velocity of the particles• were allowed to approach its terminal value. To achieve this gravity separation, it is suggested that the suction phase of the jigging cycle be artificially prolonged and the frequency of pulsations increased as much as possible for washing the coals of smaller sizes."

The Kumera Technology Center developed a unique type of steam dryer for drying copper concentrate in the mid 1990s. The dryer has been chosen in several copper smelter projects since 1999. To expand production capacities, the Norddeutsche Affinerie smelter, the Pirdop smelter of Cumerio, the Toyo smelter of Sumitomo Metal Mining and the Tamano smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting have carried out projects in which Kumera Steam Dryers were installed. The capacity of a single steam dryer varies from 70 t/h to 160 t/h. This article summarizes the latest operation results of the Kumera Steam Dryers in these smelters and introduces the progress of the ongoing projects in Yanggu Xiangguang Copper, Guixi smelter of Jiangxi Copper, Jinlong Copper, Boliden Harjavalta, and Onsan smelter of LS-Nikko Copper.

"Ventilation is a vital service in underground mines, required to provide fresh air to the work force and dilute diesel equipment gases (CO, NOx) and diesel particulate matters (DPM). At a Mexican precious metal mine in the state of Chihuahua there is a VOD system implemented using Howden’s control and monitoring system and a state of the art tagging and tracking technology. The JM zone of the mine is ventilated using a push and pull system, using automated regulators on each level to control the air going in and out of the levels. The implementation of advanced control strategies using Howden’s VentSim™CONTROL allows the mine to generate significant savings and increase health and safety of the workers.INTRODUCTIONIn underground mines, ventilation is a requirement in order to maintain the fresh air needed for personnel and equipment. Ventilation regulations dictate the amount of air required underground to carry out day to day operations by limiting the exposure that workers have to toxic gases and other pollutants. Regulations for required airflow in underground operations for diesel pollutants are generally provided on vehicle rated brake horsepower, in Mexico the requirement is 75 cfm/bhp. In underground mines, ventilation services can account to up to 75% of the mine’s energy consumption, and it is very common for fans to operate all the time because of a lack of control infrastructure for the ventilation system. By the implementation of a Ventilation On Demand (VOD) system a mine can reduce this consumption with different control strategies. The main infrastructure required to implement this system consists of remote control of ventilation infrastructure (fans and regulators), a communication network between throughout the mine with the surface and a tracking system for personnel and diesel equipment. Software is required to determine fresh air requirements based on the tracking system data and then send the control commands to the different ventilation infrastructure. In 2015, San Julian Mine acquired Howden’s VentSim™CONTROL (formally SmartEXEC) and the hardware solution to deploy a VOD system at their operation. The VOD system and Fresnillo plc’s San Julian Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, consists of control of 10 surface exhaust fans, 2 surface intake fans, and 12 underground automated regulators. It also includes the monitoring of 46 flow sensors, 28 CO sensors, 28 NO?? sensors and 42 temperature and humidity sensors, approximately 500 personnel tags, approximately 220 vehicle tracking tags with diesel status (ON or OFF) and approximately 250 tracking zones. This paper discusses the control strategies that have been implemented at San Julian Mine since the system was commissioned and the next steps that will be taken at the mine with the system as they test different level on VOD."

SatraPM is a web-based software package, aiming to help project managers to easily handle their construction projects via internet. This software is capable of handling all projects of an organization, in which all projects can be defined in EPS the same as users in OBS. A 3D accessing module links EPS, OBS and inherent functions in order to provide a secure environment for the data to be processed throughout the system. This paper intends to take a deeper look at capabilities of SatraPM in helping project managers to keep track of and control their construction projects as well as its potential future features.

"IntroductionTHE LOW-VOLATILE bituminous coals of the Brazeau field, Nordegg, Alberta, are soft and weak in structure. The seams contain .bands of inferior material, locally designated 'black jack', and thin bands of friable carbonaceous shale having no definite horizon but usually 'floating' in the seam. Because of the weakness• of the coal and the friable nature of the shale bands, run-of-mine coal usually contains a very high percentage of fines, as •Shown in the following table:SIZE WEIGHT. %Plus 1/2 in 25.61/2 – 1/4 in 13.31/4 - 1/8 in 14.6Minus 1/8 in 46.5The most convenient way of cleaning the fine coal would be by treating it in association with the coarse coal, so that no additional plant would be necessary. To a limited extent this is possible in certain types of equipment, notably the jig. A system of washing without pre-sizing is not •attractive, however, when dealing with the friable coal under consideration, which contains •a preponderant proportion of fines. At the new Brazeau washery, separation is made at 3/8-inch on •a Robins 'Vibrex' •screen, the coarse sizes being cleaned in •a standard pulsator-type jig. A feldspar jig is used to clean the minus 3/8-inch fraction."
