A universal challenge for the mineral processing industry is the diminishment of high grade ores. Instead, low grade ores, sometimes also containing problematic gangue minerals is the reality. With lower head grades the industry has to put more effort into processing to maintain the output and achieve suitable recoveries. In an effort to reduce the impact of declining head grade, a biopolymer was evaluated as an additive in the gold leaching operation at Antam Pongkor in Indonesia. Laboratory testing revealed that biopolymer usage lead to an increased gold recovery without apparent negative impact on the other parts of the process. Further plant trials revealed both a recovery increase around 1.3% and higher throughput (9%) in the presence of the biopolymer. Some scenarios that can explain these findings will be discussed.

Introductory Feldspar is one of the most important mineral products consumed by the various branches of the ceramic industry. In the manufacture of table ware, electric porcelain, floor tile, and enamels, it supplies the chief fluxing ingredients necessary to bond the other more or less inert materials together when moulded into desired shape and fired in a kiln. Feldspar is used in the manufacture of bottle glass as a means of introducing alumina in a form easily assimilated. It is also used in certain scouring soaps particularly designed for cleaning enamel and glass surfaces. Feldspar, as it finds its way to the trade, is not a single mineral but is rather a mixture of various proportions of the feldspar silicate series, either in natural intergrowth or blended in the milling process, to produce a desired result. It is often further modified by the presence of quartz in amounts up to 30 per cent. The table on the next page gives typical commercial analyses of feldspar from various sources. Canadian feldspar produced to date has consisted mainly of the high-potash, relatively low-soda, variety, and has enjoyed a good market in the United States for the manufacture of enamels, electric porcelain, and vitrified table-ware. About eighty per cent of the output has been exported to the United States, but, with increased milling facilities in Canada and changes taking place in domestic United States sources of supply, the proportion exported will be reduced next year.

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is located in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, 50 km southeast of Revelstoke. The property is being explored by a joint venture between Newmont Exploration of Canada and Esso Minerals Canada.The deposit is associated with a small granodiorite stock of Upper Cretaceous age (76 Ma) which has variably altered the surrounding schists, argillites and marbles of the lower Paleozoic Lardeau Group to hornjelsic biotite schists and skarn. The intrusive is composed of a small stock and an intersecting network of northeast- and northwest-trending dykes at surface that coalesce downward into a larger stock. There are two main phases of intrusion, with an earlier quartz porphyritic granodiorite cut by an intra-mineral ""quartz diorite"" porphyry. A strong sub-vertical north-trending fault controls the distribution of the mineralized stock work and displays post-mineral movement.Molybdenite, accompanied by pyrite and pyrrhotite, is mainly present along the margins of veins in a well-developed quartz stock work, but occasionally is strongly disseminated in microfractured intrusives. The stock work is strongest in and around the contacts of the intrusive and its apophyses, and occurs over a vertical range of more than 1,000 m. As defined by the 0.10% MoS] contour, the main mineralized zone is up to 300 m long by 200m wide. Preliminary drill-indicated reserves, currently being revised, are approximately 50 million tonnes of 0.23% MoS2, within which are several zones of higher-grade material. Hydrothermal alteration, as defined by quantitative X-ray diffraction studies on composite core sections, is composed of a central quartz/K-feldspar/albite/minor biotite zone coincident with molybdenum mineralization, which is overlapped by a slightly later, antipathetic quartz/ sericite/pyrite zone. Ankeritic carbonate is also a common alteration mineral, but only traces of fluorite, and no topaz or sulfosalts, have been observed. Analysis for trace elements such as Sn, W, Bi, Sb, As, Hg, U, Ag, Au, Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn and F has been limited except for Sn and W, which appear to be zoned inside and outside the Mo zone respectively; the other elements do not show detectable patterns thus far."

"This paper examines the impact of the various assumptions that go into an economic evaluation, and shows how these can be combined to show an exciting result that may not really exist. An example of an embellished case (the kind that one frequently sees when projects are being promoted) is developed and the cumulative impact is analysed to show the actual project underneath. The paper also points out some areas to watch for overly optimistic assumptions such as prices, inflation, and debt. The concept of a ""bare bones"" base case is proposed (constant metal prices, constant dollars, no inflation, no debt, no interest, on a project basis, after tax) as a common reference point.As well, the discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk.INTRODUCTIONOften, the first time that all of the technical and economic data for a mineral project comes together in one place is when the economic evaluation is developed. This typically happens when work on the project has progressed to a sufficient level of detail that the effort to produce a year-by-year cash flow is justified, usually at the pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage. The data involved will include:• production; tonnes waste and ore mined, ore grade, mining recovery, metallurgical recovery, metal sold• revenue; metal price, smelting & refining charges, marketing costs• operating Costs; mining, milling, administration, fees, royalties• capital Costs; exploration, development, construction, indirect costs (engineering, management), contingencies, start-up, inventories, working capital, replacement and sustaining capital, closure costs• taxes and royalties• exclusions; depreciation (this is not a cash item), sunk costs (only costs going forward)."

New technology projects, particularly those involving first-of-a-kind metallurgical facilities, have a poor track record of achieving their overall financial targets, as they incorporate technological risks in addition to normal project risks. Traditional project management tools focus on risk from concept development through implementation, but typically fail to address the additional risks associated with a new technology project including slow start-up, slow ramp-up, and failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). These additional risks affect future cash flows produced by the project and hence its value, typically measured as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR). Common accounting practice is to reduce the present value of future cash flows by applying a chosen discount rate, often reflecting the corporation's cost of capital. This discount rate does not contain an allowance for technological risk, which is often underestimated or misunderstood by both the financial and engineering project managers. This paper will focus on the topic of project risk and new technology, and how these play a role in the probability of achieving the predicted future cash flows. By properly addressing technological risk in the form of risk-weighted returns, marginal projects can be prevented from proceeding, while sound projects can be given the additional time and resources required to achieve the optimal level of front-end-loading (the level which returns the maximum risk-weighted net present value). A simple set of mathematical tools should enable engineers and financial professionals to establish a common level of understanding, thereby leading to a more accurate assessment whether a new technology project is ready to pass through its next level of approvals.

"Simulation is the process of designing a computerized model, of a system or procedure, for the purpose of understanding its behaviour and developing strategies to control its operation. Simulation models are rapidly becoming an effective tool for mineral processing plants. Powerful software and fast hardware are more readily available than a basic understanding of the theory of mathematical probability and applied statistics that process simulation models demand.Simple spreadsheet software can be used to develop simulation models that take into account any set of conditions at a mineral processing plant. In addition to an unbiased estimate for each variable in the set on which two-and three-product formulas are based, reliable variance estimates for all variables are required. How to estimate variances, effectively and at the lowest possible cost, and how to compute variances for simple functions such as the metal content of a quantity of ore or concentrate, or more complex functions such as the percentage recovery at a mineral processing plant, are the key to useful simulation models.IntroductionSimulation models for systems and procedures have become one of the most powerful and effective applications for computers( 2.6). Simulations are applied to a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Generally, a model is designed to investigate the effects of changes in and interactions between a set of variables before a system is in operation or a procedure is implemented, by simulating weeks, months, and even years of operation, in a few minutes of computer time. Along with practical and useful applications always comeabuse and misuse. For a simulation process cannot be more reliable than the methodology that was applied to design the model, to estimate variables and variances, to check performance, and to verify validity. A mineral processing plant is a dynamic system that changes continuously as a function of time but within probabilistic constraints that can be estimated by applying statistical tools and techniques to the variables and variances that interact in the system.A model should be designed to simulate not only the set of variables but also the variance for each variable. Models in which constant variances are used to generate normally distributed random numbers, are less realistic than models in which the variances are simulated first, and then used to simulate the variables."

This paper outlines the regional geology and history of the area, and summarizes the stratigraphy, structure and geology of the Brunswick No. 12 mine area. The Brunswick No. 12 deposit is a stratiform massive sulphide body. It occurs in rocks of the Tetagouche Group, which is believed to range in age from Lower to Middle Ordovician. The stratigraphic sequence, including the stratiform orebody, in ascending order consists of older metasedimentary rocks, augen schist, metasediments, augen. schist, footwall metasediments, the -massive sulphide body, iron formation, hanging-wall metasediments, siliceous tuff, basic volcanic rocks , basic iron formation and a porphyry dyke. This sequence is similar to that at some other deposits in the area. Four phases of structural deformation are known to be present in the Brunswick No. 12 mine area. The first deformation folds (F1 ) and associated faulting are the most important factors in determining the distribution of the massive sulphides. This deformation has resulted in the massive sulphides being separated into four zones: the Main Zone, the West Zone, the East Zone and the V-2 Zone. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited is actively mining, developing and exploring the deposit.

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. The last coal-fired power plant to be built in Canada came into operation in 1994. Since then, Canada?s electricity requirements have grown substantially but no new coal-burning plants have been built. This country has abundant resources of coal from coast to coast, but in recent years, this has not affected our choice of fuel. In many other countries this is not the case, and the use of coal is growing rapidly. Although this presentation covers the topic from an Alberta perspective, some of the conclusions can be extrapolated to the rest of the country, and perhaps even to other countries. The coal found in the Alberta plains is particularly attractive because of its low cost and low sulphur content. Yet coal is no longer the fuel of choice, and a long-standing provincial government policy to favour coal for electricity generation has been ignored for more than a decade. Considering the lack of good alternatives, it seems obvious that we should look to coal as our primary energy source in the generation of electricity and for other industrial applications. This paper discusses some of the reasons that coal has fallen out of favour, particularly with respect to electricity generation. The significance of the deregulation of the electricity industry will not be ignored. In addition, the author will offer his opinion on the question of what it will take in order for coal to once again become the favoured fuel.

"Mine tunneling applications are sensitive to the leakage and friction performance of ducting systems. Improvements in performance can help project economics through reduction in drift height, booster fan spacing, fan electrical power requirement, and deferral of ventilation raise construction. Semirigid plastic ducting has enjoyed significant adoption in mine tunneling in recent years. This paper explores technical properties and performance aspects of this relatively new material application.INTRODUCTIONUnderground mining projects are sensitive to mine development cost and schedule to meet first production—both of which are defined to a substantial extent by mine access construction. The very nature of mine access development requires driving accesses into new areas and even mechanized and automated tunneling methods require ventilation. Until underground airways are connected, allowing a flow-through circuit, ducted ventilation is required to establish ventilation within any single-access (i.e.: dead-end) heading. See Figure 1 as an example of ducted ventilation. Improving performance of ducted ventilation systems impacts project cost and schedule in several ways:For drifts whose height is defined by overhead clearance above haul trucks or tall equipment, smaller diameter ducting will decrease heading size.With higher ventilation flows, activities can be less ventilation-constricted; secondary headings can be worked without restriction, which improves schedule.Given the ability to provide more air for a given fan power, blasting gasses can clear the face and mine more quickly so crews can return to work more quickly - allowing higher advance rates.Lower electrical costs – both due to lower power consumed by fans and with the requirement for fewer electrical stations to power booster fans."

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have been touted as having the potential to spearhead a nuclear renaissance. Proponents of this view cite the relative advantages of SMRs over larger nuclear plants as reason for their optimism. Some of these merits include potential economies of mass production deriving from modular factory production, enhanced safety features, the ability to locate reactors in remote areas, and reduced requirements for technical workforces to install and maintain SMRs. Despite the optimism surrounding SMRs, nuclear power is still a contentious issue for many Canadians. The growth of nuclear power remains adversely affected by concerns over issues such as: the health and safety consequences of nuclear power generation, environmental impacts, proliferation of nuclear materials, terrorism, and radioactive waste disposal (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), 2010). Personal values, past nuclear accidents, and lack of trust in the industry are other factors influencing attitudes toward nuclear energy (IAEA, 2005). In Canada, three main areas where SMRs could be used have been identified. These include: a. Traditional, on-grid power generation, especially in provinces looking for zero-emissions replacements for CO2-emitting coal plants. B. Remote off grid communities that currently rely on diesel or fuel oil power generation. There are 279 off-grid communities in Canada, many of them being Aboriginal communities (NRCan, ND). Notably, all communities in each of Canada’s three territories qualify as remote. C. Resource extraction sites, such as mining and oil and gas extraction sites. Many of Canada’s principal producing mines and active mineral exploration projects are located within close proximity of Aboriginal communities. Any proposed implementation of small nuclear plants would, require the support of the local population, which is largely Indigenous in the northern regions. The possible deployment of SMRs raises important issue relating to consultation and accommodation of Aboriginal concerns regarding potential SMR deployment. This is especially pertinent given Canada’s pending implementation of the provisions of UNDRIP. One of the provisions of UNDRIP that has attracted a lot of attention is the one on Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). Drawing on previously published information, this paper discusses some of the challenges posed by FPIC for the deployment of SMRs. The next section outlines the provisions of FPIC and its implementation in the Canadian context. Section 3, details some of the challenges posed by FPIC to the deployment of SMRs, while Section 4 provides some concluding comments.

The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. "Spiral concentrators are used for processing coal and heavy minerals such as it is the case for the concentration of iron oxide from light silica gangue. The concentration process for iron ore usually consists of a rougher bank of spirals followed by two stages of spiral cleaning. The process control applied to the concentration circuit aims at maintaining a target iron content of the final concentrate and is mainly conducted by adjusting the wash water addition and the position of the splitter gates at the discharge of the spiral. This paper describes the use of a simulator to study control strategies for a gravity concentration circuit using spirals.INTRODUCTION The Canadian iron ore mines are located in the Northern part of Quebec and in Labrador (Neal, 2000). These iron ores consist mainly of hematite with some ore bodies rich in magnetite and ilmenite. The processing of the coarse hematite iron ore consists of the extraction from an open pit mine, followed by the conventional crushing and autogeneous grinding of the ore to obtain a particle size smaller than 1.2 mm. The ground ore assaying 40% hematite (Fe2O3) with quartz (SiO2) as the main gangue is processed by spirals to produce an iron oxide concentrate assaying 90 to 95% hematite.Spirals separate the particles according to their specific gravity and size (Burt, 1984; Bazin et al., 2014). These environment friendly devices have been used for decades and are still used for the preparation of coal and for the concentration of heavy minerals such as iron oxide (Staff, 1977; Wills, 1992). However very little information is available concerning the control of gravity concentration circuits. This paper analyzes the control practice of a gravity concentration circuit using a simulator. The paper consists of 3 sections. The first section describes the operation of spirals and spiral concentration circuits. The second section briefly describes the simulator and shows some simulation results for a gravity concentration circuit. The third section shows the application of the simulator for the study of control strategies for a spiral concentration circuit."

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. Using on-filter X-ray diffraction analysis as opposed to redeposition of dust samples onto another analytical substrate allows the"

A FEW years ago the writer had the privilege of examining a piece of apparatus in the Forest Products Laboratory of McGill University which engaged his attention. The Forest Products Laboratory has an excellent installation of wood-grinding machinery, and the officials in charge were naturally interested in acquiring means for estimating the fineness of various wood grinds. The problem was referred to Dr. O. Maass ( l ). Dr. Maass designed a piece of equipment to measure the surface of a wood grind and derived an equation applicable in calculating its value, as follows : After inspecting this apparatus, the writer was disposed to believe that, with some modifications, Dr. Maass' ingenious idea might be utilized to measure the surface of mineral powders. Obviously, some difficulty would be found in maintaining an even suspension of mineral particles of high specific gravity compared to that of wood pulp. The writer will not bore the reader with a description of the various machines built and tried out. Some of these were satisfactory enough to obtain some valuable information, and to bring to light a difficulty which threatened to bring the investigation to an abrupt ending. For the mineral quartz, it was found that Kin the formula above stated was not a constant.

"The processes leading to the fall of rock compartments from rock walls are poorly known as well as their velocity. It ensues that quantitative prediction of the failure time for a rock compartment which is presently stable, is not possible by a purely geomechanical approach. However a quantitative probabilistic prediction of rockfalls at the scale of a rock wall is possible if the spatial-temporal rockfall frequency can be determined or estimated (Hantz, 2011). For a better knowledge of failure processes and frequency, rockfalls have been detected in several rock walls, using annual terrestrial laser scanning, allowing comparison of the frequencies in different geological conditions. For one of these rock walls, the spatial detection have been completed by a precise dating of the events, using a quasi-continuous photographic survey (one photo every 10 mn), allowing the study of the influence of meteorological factors.The precise dating of rockfalls has been carried out for the Saint-Eynard cliff which towers above a residential area of the town of Grenoble (French Alps). The South-East facing cliff consists in bedded limestone gently dipping North-West and located at an elevation between 850 m and 1100 m. The surveyed zone is about 750 m large and 250 m high. Between 01/02/2013 and 26/11/2013, 65 rockfalls ranging between 0.01 m3 and 20 m3, have been detected by diachronic comparison of laser scanner data and dated by comparison of photographic images. The temperature at the elevation of the cliff has been calculated from the temperature measured (every 5 mn) at a meteorological station located at an elevation of 245 m and 2.5 km away from the cliff, using a temperature gradient of 0.003°C/m (D’Amato et al., 2014). The precipitation were measured 900 m away from the cliff at an elevation of 469 m. Different meteorological conditions have been defined: (a) “freeze” qualifies days with negative mean temperature (but with a thaw period, except for two days); (b) “thaw” qualifies days with positive mean temperature, but following a freeze day; (c) “rain” qualifies days with precipitation.Table 1 shows the rockfall temporal frequency for the different meteorological conditions. It appears that the frequency is about 6 times higher the freeze days, 2.5 higher the thaw days and 3 times higher the rain days than days without freeze, thaw or rain."
