"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. THE blast furnace is the base of the steel industry, since there is no commercially practical way of converting iron ore directly into steel. In three hundred years, the blast furnace has developed from a small unit using charcoal as fuel and producing about one ton of iron in twenty-four hours to a furnace making upwards of 1,500 tons a day. The principle of the blast furnace is briefly this: A descending column of stock, consisting of ore, fuel, and flux, is met by an ascending stream of gases, consisting in part of gases formed by the combustion of the fuel and in part of pre-heated air which is blown into the lower part of the furnace. The flux combines with the impurities in the ore and the ash in the fuel to form slag, which is drawn off as liquid.

"There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. Discussion of the laws bearing upon the economics of mining in this province at once resolves itself under three headings: (a) The rights and obligations of holders of mineral bearing lands; (b) Taxation of mines; (c) Regulation of methods adopted in financing mining operations. Titles: The law relating to titles is contained in the Mineral Act, Placer Mining Act and Coal Mines Prospecting Act. Origin: Mining laws in force in this province and elsewhere on the continent had their origin in the rule-of-thumb regulations adopted by prospectors themselves, when, far from the centres of civilization and the seats of the courts of justice, they found it necessary, for mutual protection, to fix the conditions of possession by right of location, and to prescribe the duties to be performed in order to enable the individual to maintain his ground against all comers. These regulations have been codified and added to by legislatures, until we find adequate protection and safeguard to property in the laws of this province.

Strategic decisions to develop a mineral deposit are subject to geological uncertainty, due to the sparsity of drill core samples. The selection of metallurgical equipment is especially critical, since it restricts the processing options that are available to different ore blocks, even as the nature of the deposit is still highly uncertain. Current approaches for long-term mine planning are successful at addressing geological uncertainty, but do not adequately represent alternate modes of operation for the mineral processing plant, nor do they provide sufficient guidance for developing processing options. Nonetheless, recent developments in stochastic optimization and computer data structures have resulted in a framework that can integrate operational modes into strategic mine planning algorithms. A logical next step is to incorporate geometallurgical models that relate mineralogical features to plant performance, as described in this paper.

Iwenty-one ore dusts of varying mineralogy, sulphur content and reputed in-mine explosibility were selected from eight mines. After chemical and mineralogical analysis and sieving into two size fractions (+45/ -63 microns and -45 microns), these sarrples and seven pure minerals were tested for explosibility in oxygen in a Harbnann chamber. '!he maximum explosion pressures and maximum rates of pressure do not correlate with sulphur content alone; the types of minerals are also .important. Residues were analyzed to check the combustion reactions. Further comparisons between laboratory and mine results are planned to improve predictability.

"The coal reserves of the Crow's Nest Basin in British Columbia have been known since the late 1860's. The 51.0-million-long-ton (over 15 years) sale of low-volatile coking coal to Japanese steel mills, as finalized in 1968, establishes the importance of these coal reserves in the world markets.In the early stages of the exploration program, which began in January, 1967, emphasis was placed on deter-mining the reserve of underground low-pitch coal within the No. 10 or Balmer seam of the Kootenay coal forma-tion. The finding of low-cover reserves in excess of 100,000,000 tons altered the initially planned underground program. Extensive tests were performed, establishing the excellent coking characteristics of the open-cast Balmer coal. Due recognition was given to the ultimate reclamation costs of mined lands and associated spoil areas.t was determined that, to achieve the costs desired, a high productivity was necessary, requiring large mining equipment. Operating criteria were set out, based on producing 4.2 million tons of clean coal per year. To optimize recovery, the preparation plant feed size was fixed at Yi in. x 0. The initial basic design capacity of the plant was 1,000 tph. The washing plant is composed essentially of four separate cleaning sections: a dedusting section; a multi-stage heavy media cyclone section; water cyclones; and flotation cells. Subsequent to the basic program, additional sales were made of 6.0 million long tons over the initial three-year period and the plant capacity was raised to 1,400 tph through the addition of a 400-tph coarse-coal treatment section. All wet coal products from the fine coal plant will be dried in a 70-tph (water) heat dryer. A unit-train concept of coal transportation between the mine site and the Westward Terminals at Roberts Bank has been negotiated with the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Facilities at the port will include a 4,000-tph rotary car bumper, 400,000-ton clean-coal stockpiles, and a bucket reclaiming system having a total ship-loading capacity of 6,000 tph."

The history of the flotation process, as applied to the practical field of ore dressing, dates back somewhat less than twenty years; yet this fact may be overlooked in view of the present universal dependence on this process in the concentration of almost all classes of ore. It is therefore interesting to recall that Britannia was the scene of some of the earliest experiments with flotation on a commercial scale. In 1911, sixteen years ago, an Elmore vacuum machine was operated for several months with encouraging results. In 1913, some time before flotation was very generally adopted elsewhere, a Minerals Separation plant, capable of treating 600 tons daily, was operating successfully at Britannia. Considering how little was known of the theory and practice of flotation at that time, the recovery was remarkably good, but it was not until the present mill was completed in 1923 that any attempt was made to raise the concentrate grade by differential flotation, or, in other words, to float the chalcopyrite while rejecting the then worthless pyrite with the tailings. The first ore passed through the present concentrator in March, 1923. As originally designed, the rated capacity was for 2,000-2,500 tons, but this has been increased year by year, until at the present time 4,000 tons daily can be treated economically. During the first few months of operation the concentrate grade averaged only 10-11 per cent Cu, but by the end of 1923 this had been raised to over 20 per cent, due to the elimination of the pyrite by differential flotation. In 1923 the tailings averaged approximately 0.25 per cent Cu, but also in the matter of recovery a considerable improvement has been effected, for during the year 1926 an average tailing of 0.15 per cent Cu was maintained.

In conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RK-EF) laterite nickel processing, management of dust continues to be problematic. A more efficient processing of dust represents an opportunity for energy efficiency, increased production, and productivity. PT International Nickel Indonesia (PTI), together with Vale Base Metals Technology Development (VBMTD), has successfully developed and implemented a novel flowsheet enhancement that capitalizes on these opportunities. In the novel flowsheet, the dust recycle stream is moved forward in the RK-EF laterite nickel smelting process. The dust is injected into the kiln's main burner, as opposed to being recycled to the dryers. A similar treatment of dust is commonly practiced in the cement industry; however, application to nickel smelters has not been fully developed to date. This paper describes this dust insufflation technology, the process through which it was developed for laterite nickel processing, and summarizes the lessons learned. A key conclusion is that successful new technology development requires a multi-disciplinary team involving members from research and development, study management, engineering consulting firms, project implementation management, process technology and operations.

IN November, 1932, an investigation of silicosis was undertaken at the Mcintyre Porcupine mine, Schumacher, Ont., after a discussion of the p"roblem with Sir Frederick Banting and his staff. As a result, it was decided to carry on dusting experiments with animals at the mine in a manner that would duplicate as far as possible actual industrial conditions. At that time 50 guinea pigs were placed in the crusher house tunnel of the mill where a considerable quantity of fine dust, containing approximately 35 per cent of free silica, was being constantly produced. These animals lived in this atmosphere for periods up to one year, and, while on autopsy large amounts of dust were found in the lungs, not a single case of silicosis had developed. These negative results suggested, among other things, that the mine gases might be a predisposing factor in the production of silicosis, and the results of this investigation (1) led us to undertake the study of the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate of the atmosphere, both in the mine and in various sections of the mill. The CO, combining power of blood serum on a series of 400 miners was also studied at this time. While these results were inconclusive, the variation in the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate between the surface and underground atmospheres encouraged us to investigate the effect of neutral, weak acid, and alkaline solutions on the solubility of siliceous materials. Gye and Purdy (2) were the first to point out that the chemical reaction, and not the physical presence of siliceous material, was responsible for the production of the fibrosis in silicosis. This work was investigated by Gardner and Cummings (3), who showed that the tissue reaction to quartz was definitely proportional to the size of the particle. They found that 1-3 micron particles of quartz produced an acute proliferative fibrotic response, while the 10-12 micron particles produced only a foreign-body reaction up to a period of three years. It is accepted that the dangerous silica particles retained by the lung are under 5 microns in diameter.

Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken. A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material. Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores. This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit.

"Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Les mésocosmes des marais artificiels traitant des eaux usées, contenant du chrome hexavalent (Cr(VI)), exposés à des champs magnétiques de faible intensité (60 Hz, 56,5 × 10-6 Tesla) ont produit 100 % plus de biomasse que le contrôle non exposé. Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"As rock engineering moves from continuum to more discontinuum approaches for modeling, the engineer must make decisions regarding the degree of complexity to simulate for a given application, balancing the level of structural detail within the rockmass model with computational cost and result accuracy. It is important to consider that model does not need to include all the existent fractures and that representative geometrical properties for a given rock mass volume can be defined including only major structural entities.Within this paper, the scale-dependency associated with the geometrical properties of fractured rock is investigated utilizing a Synthetic Rockmass (SRM) approach with a view to characterize such ground to aid in the design of geotechnical works. In terms of process, the concept of the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) is used to determine the equivalent structural properties of the rockmass in order to justify the applicability of far-field behaviour of such ground. A large size Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) measuring 60m x 60m x 60m has been generated using the structural data obtained from LiDAR scanning of the Brockville Tunnel, Ontario, Canada. A number of DFN samples of varying sizes are extracted from the master network, generated using MoFrac, in order to be used as a the basis of the structural analysis of the rockmass. Volumetric measurements for the density and the intensity of jointing are employed in order to approximate the geometrical REV for the networks.In this paper a complete methodology of how to generate a DFN from LiDAR data and its analysis in order to determine the size of a geometrical REV is demonstrated. For the specific rockmass found in the area of the Brockville Tunnel, a geometrical REV measuring 3.5m x 3.5m x 7m is established. The results are generally in good agreement with the in-situ observations."

"The co-pyrolysis of synthetic polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and agricultural wastes (naturally occurring polymer-macadamia nut shell) was investigated in the temperature range 473K to 1273K using a horizontal furnace with an aim to understand their thermal degradation under isothermal conditions. In-depth characterization of pyrolysis residues was carried out using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for carbon structure, and through determination of the concentration of unpaired electrons using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). In previous studies, it has been found that PET thermally decomposes ~ 650K-700K, releasing (~80 wt % of initial weight) gaseous products due to random chain scission. In the case of macadamia nut shell, three types of byproduct can be obtained from pyrolysis: char, tar and gaseous products. In the co-pyrolysis of macadamia nut shell with PET in 50-50 wt% ratio, total product weight ratio could be modified with the addition of PET acting as a hydrogen source. This is because a recombination of thermal cracking products of cellulose could be suppressed by hydrogen from PET, which will later lead to an enhancement of tar formation. In addition, pyrolysis around 673K is sufficient for bond cleavage to occur in cellulose and lignin leading to the formation of negatively charged activated carbon with high surface area, providing bonding sites for volatiles evolving from PET. Therefore the co-pyrolysis may be able to enhance the product yield (tar/char/solid carbon residue) along with a reduction in the release of gaseous products. During the co-pyrolysis, temperature was found to have a significant influence on the kinetics of thermal degradation and solid residual by-products after co-pyrolysis.INTRODUCTIONPlastics are being used worldwide in a wide range of applications in the modern society; their usage has resulted in increasingly a massive waste problem. The production of most synthetic plastics requires hydrocarbons that are produced from petrochemicals derived from fossil oil and natural gas, a non-renewable source (Speight 2011). Currently, plastic manufacture utilizes ~4% of world oil and gas production, and it is expected to drive further increases in petroleum demand by 1-2% due to their large volume of manufacture (Hopewell, Dvorak et al. 2009). Landfilling and incineration of plastic waste are the two main routes to plastic waste management (Encinar and González 2008). In Australia, only 10% of waste plastics were recycled in 2006 (White and Hyde 2011). This means that large amount of fossil fuels from plastics has either been simply burned for energy recovery or buried in the ground. There is an urgent need for developing alternative avenues for recycling waste plastics. Our group at UNSW has carried out extensive research on the recycling of waste polymers as carbon resource in steelmaking including slag foaming and carbon dissolution from waste plastics into liquid steel at 1600°C; the effect of basic plastic characteristics such as chemical composition, structure, bonding network etc. was examined (Sahajwalla, Rahman et al. 2009)"

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

"I AM CONSCIOUS of the honour you pay me by having invited me to address you on the subject of the Rehabilitation of the Sydney Steel Corporation. The true architect of the revival and rehabilitation is Robert Burns Cameron. Because of the numerous myths which have grown up around what seems to be the miracle of the revival of the Sydney Steelworks, I propose to go back to the time when they came under the full control of the Province, on the 1st of January, 1968. Late in 1967, the decision was taken by Premier G. I. Smith to keep the Steel Plant running for at least another year, in an endeavour to see whether the enormous losses being sustained by Dosco could be reduced to a level which would permit their continuing operation. When that decision was taken, Dosco was to continue management until the 30th of April, 1968, and in the intervening period, the Provincial Government would seek management of the right calibre to ensure that an objective view of the Steelworks operations could be secured. By a combination of circumstances which can only be described as most felicitous, the man selected for the task was R. B. Cameron. He very quickly determined that to permit Dosco to continue management of the Steelworks until April 30 could only result in heavy losses to the Province and a consequent deterioration in the already critical financial position and a declining morale of the worke"

"VAUGHAN THOMPSON designed the Thompson retrievable diamond drill wedge and reaming assembly in 1948. Since 1950, the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Company, Limited has used the method extensively. The wedge, setting tool, and reamer have been modified slightly since they were first introduced. In 1951, Mr. Thompson designed the Thompson arc cutter. The purpose of this tool is to decrease effectively the diameter of the arc cut, using standard drilling tools. This directional drilling device is usually employed when a branch hole is desired. The Thompson arc cutter has been used with success at Birch Lake, Saskatchewan, at the property of Cuprus Mines, Limited, Manitoba, and at Thompson Lake, Manitoba.UsesThe Thompson retrievable wedge provides a simple method for:(1) Re-drilling lost core sections(2) Re-sampling sections of old holes(3) By-passing lost tools Correcting the direction of a hole(4) Drilling a branch hole to obtain intersections at a higher elevation than the original holePrevious to the spring of 1951, the wedge was used only for the first four of these purposes. Recently it has been employed extensively for drilling branch holes."

"Uranium and thorium mineralization occurs at several localities in eastern Quebec along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The main occurrences are near Sept-Iles, Baie Johan Beetz, Romaine and St-Augustin river. Mineralization occurs mainly as disseminated uraninite, uranothorite, uranothorianite, monazite and minor zircon and allanite. Yellow to orange oxidation products are observed along fracture planes of the uranium-bearing deposits to a depth of a few feet. Magnetite, biotite and smoky quartz have a distinct tendency to accompany the radioactive minerals. The host rocks include white to pink pegmatite, pink granite and also, in the case of the Romaine and St-Augustin River occurrences, cream to grey plagioclase-rich, well foliated paragneiss and migmatite. Radioactivity near secondary structures, such as fractures and joint planes, indicates some reconstitution of radioactive minerals.The North Shore of Quebec is the northeast extension of the Grenville sub-province. It is also a uranium-thorium metallogenic province."

This paper describes some of the main aspects involved in implementing the European “Equipment and Protective Systems for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres” (ATEX) Directive (No.94/9/EC) in the British mining industry by the year 2003. It provides a brief background to the Directive and considers its main objective of removing all barriers to trade in Europe. It outlines the need for the European Standards making bodies to write new editions of the ’explosion protection concept standards’ and for manufacturers to adopt new quality management procedures and develop new versions of equipment in conformity with the ATEX categories of “M1” or “M2.” Finally, it assesses the possible future relationship between the European enforcing authorities, manufacturers and users of explosion protected equipment.
