"The successful commissioning and ramp up of the Albion Process™ at the GPM Gold Project relied on the successful scaling up of the process from batch and continuous pilot plant campaigns (Voigt et al., 2015). Critical information about reaction kinetics and residence time, grind size and pulp density were determined at the laboratory scale and successfully applied to the commercial scale. A limitation of small scale testwork, is that some parameters cannot be measured reliably and scaling up is a function of the physical size of the equipment which isn’t possible to test with laboratory scale equipment. Oxygen mass transfer rate is one such parameter since this is a complex interaction of many factors including slurry temperature, solution and slurry chemistry, slurry viscosity, agitator type, dimensions and power, oxygen bubble residence time, oxygen purity, tank geometry and oxygen injection technique. Oxygen generation represents an important operating cost for the Albion Process™. Pivotal to the Albion Process™ operating economically at atmospheric pressure is the capability to efficiently transfer oxygen while utilising as much oxygen injected to the process as possible. To respond to this Glencore Technology developed the HyperSpargeTM supersonic gas injector. This paper compares the HyperSparge™ against other sparging techniques to quantify the benefits of oxygen injection via a supersonic gas jet on scale up of the oxygen mass transfer system. The paper then examines plant survey data from the GPM Gold Project to demonstrate the very high oxygen utilisation that can be achieved with a correctly designed oxygen mass transfer system.INTRODUCTION One of the main challenges in chemical reactor design is the scale-up of processes from the laboratory to industrial scale. Processes which cannot be faithfully simulated with an experiment at the laboratory scale face challenges due to the physical dimensions and complexity of full scale operation. One example of this is the design of oxygen mass transfer systems in atmospheric oxidative leaching circuits such as the Albion Process™. A number of constraints associated with the use of laboratory scale equipment to design full scale circuits are involved in gas mass transfer processes in agitated slurries such as the Albion Process. Chiefly, typical laboratory and pilot size equipment lacks the required volume to provide useful design data without relying on empirical correlations: the specific agitator power input is artificially high, the bubble residence time in the vessel is artificially low, the oxygen partial pressure at the base of the vessel is artificially low and the oxygen delivery method may differ significantly to the industrial process. Further, the dynamic nature of the process introduces additional impacts on gas mass transfer, including the presence of solids, recycle streams and minor elements, plus the variances within the reality of a process plant such as disruptions or variance of feed quality."

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.

"In the past, simulation was considered to be an offline tool disconnected from plant operation. Advancements in the computation power combined with utilizing physics and chemistry sciences have allowed us to significantly improve the modeling and simulation technology for mining and mineral processing. This paper investigates the benefits of first principle models and simulation by connecting them to real time operation. Process data are connected to high fidelity models executed in parallel to the operation. In recent literature, this concept is known as Digital Twins. The Digital Twin is used for various purposes such as optimization, virtual instrumentation and condition monitoring. Using IDEAS™ simulation software we are able to construct a digital twin for different equipment inside a mineral processing plant. Two case studies for building a digital twin for the primary hydrocyclone feed pump and thickener underflow are presented. Using the pump’s model, a digital twin is developed and is installed in a gold extraction plant that is able to infer the slurry density in real time. Additionally, it is used for detecting sanding in the pipes and impeller condition monitoring.INTRODUCTION Since the eighties, thanks to advances in computation technologies, computer based simulation of processes using first principle models has become a well-known engineering tool for various industries. As our understanding of processes has increased, their representative models have become more realistic and more sophisticated. Due to this increase of accuracy, use of simulation is becoming more fundamental in process industries. The main goals to use accurate simulation is to decrease the engineering and construction cost, optimize the process design and improve the operation performance by decreasing operation cost and increasing efficiency. The term Digital Twin was first introduced in 2010 by NASA (Shafto et al., 2012) in aerospace industry. Subsequently, the concept quickly spread through other industries. As of today, no standard organization has provided an official and unique definition of Digital Twin for process industries. However, there are three important aspects that are common throughout various descriptions. When simulation is core functionality of the process (1) along the entire life cycle of the plant (2) with direct linkage to operation (3), it is called that process has a Digital Twin. "L'Abitibi québécois a produit essentiellement de l’or, du cuivre, du zinc et de I' argent, ainsi que de faibles quantités de nickel, de plomb, de molybdène, de bismuth, de lithium, de fer et d’amiante. Depuis l’ouverture de la mine Horne en 1927, cent-cinquante mines ont contribué à la production de 1 420 tonnes d’or de 4,1 millions de tonnes de cuivre et de 4,7 millions de tonnes de zinc. Les productions minières annuelles ont été d'importance variable: des records de production ont été établis en 1955 pour I' or avec 35 tonnes et, vers 1965, pour le cuivre, le zinc et la quantile globale de minerai extrait avec respectivement 130,000, 275 000 et 13 millions de tonnes. Deux dépressions généralisées ont eu lieu, l’une vers 1946 et l'autre, a lafin des années soixante-dix. Des ralentissements de la production ont été observes pour le cuivre en 1953 et le zinc en 1959. Depuis le debut des années quatre-vingt. I' or et, de façon plus irreguliere, le zinc sont en progression, landis que le cuivre, malgre une hausse en 1983. pour suit son dec/in.La teneur de récupération des mines d’or est demeurée régulière et n’a subi qu’une faible diminution au cours des quarante dernières années. Célie du cuivre a diminué d'environ 50% dans la même période, landis que celle du zinc a subi d’import antes variations, aussi bien positives que négatives. Près des trois quarts des mines d'or ont une durée de vie inférieure à 12 ans et la distribution des tonnages de minerai extrait montre un maximum pour la classe de 100 000 à 1 million de tonnes. Du cote des mines de métaux de base, la durée de vie est plus étalée et les volumes de minerai ont une occurrence maximale dans la classe de 1 à 10 millions de tonnes.Concernant la distribution géographique de la production minière dans l'Abitibi québécois, le camp minier de Rouyn-Noranda vient en tête pour l’extraction de minerai et la production d’or et de cuivre. L’est sui vi par le camp de Val d'Or pour le minerai et l’or, landis que le camp de Chapais-Chibougamau occupe la deuxième place pour le cuivre avec une production équivalence a 60% de celle de Rouyn-Noranda. Le camp de Cadillac-Malartic suit de tres pres celui de Val d'Or pour ce qui est de I' or. Finalement, dans le casdu zinc, le camp minier de Joutel-Matagami domine largement avec une production qui a connu un développement accélère depuis 1963. Une analyse pré liminaire de ces données indique qu' i/ subsiste unpotentiel encore élevé de production d'or, décuivre et de zinc dans I' Abitibi québécois. ABSTRACTThe Quebec portion of the Abitibi belt has essentially produced gold, copper, zinc and silver, as well as some small quantities of nickel, lead, molybdenum, bismuth, lithium, iron and asbestos. Since the opening of the Horne mine in 1927, one hundred and fifty mines have produced 1420 tons of gold, 4,1 millions tons of copper and4,7 millions tons of zinc. Annual mine production has fluctuated: production records were established in 1955 for gold with 35 tons, and around 1965 for all extracted ore copper and zinc with respectively 13 millions, 130 000 and 275 000 tons. Two main recessions have occurred, the first around 1946 and the second during the late seventies. Cut backs in copper and zinc production occurred in 1953 and1959. Since the beginning of the eighties, gold production and to a lesser extent zinc production have been in progression. Except for a small jump in 1983, copper production is still declining.The average recuperation grade of gold mines has been quite steady and has only slightly diminished in the past forty years. The average copper recuperation grade was halved during the same time interval. For zinc there have been important ups and downs. At least three quarters of gold mines have an average lifespan of 12 years the tonnage distribution shows a peak in the 100 000 to 1 million tons class. Base metals mines show a more widespread life expectancy and have a tonnage peak in the 1 to 10 millions tons range"

The steel industry is producing about 5% of the world wide CO2 emission. Therefore the European steel industry has defined a research program to reduce the CO2 emission by 50% per ton: ULCOS. Since its start in 2004 ULCOS has identified four technologies for further development. Two of these technologies which produce liquid hot metal are discussed. The ULCOS blast furnace is based on recycling of decarbonated topgas and the capture and storage of CO2. The concept has been demonstrated during three campaigns at LKAB EBF in Luleå, Sweden. The smelting reduction process HIsarna is a combination of the cyclone-technology and Hismelt. The process has been demonstrated successfully in four campaigns at a pilot installation on the IJmuiden steelmaking site.

IN the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels, and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated. The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not !end themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition, the present operations in this particular seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not en-countered on the upper level. Coal will, without question, long continue to be an important factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion.

Virtually zero gas emission smelting is promoted as a means for securing environmental advantages and the general public’s acceptance. Concerns about climate change will increasingly make it more difficult for new primary metals projects to come to fruition unless greenhouse gas emissions are decreased. Assuming a sustainable market for sulphuric acid is not locally available, the next best option is high temperature reaction of strong SO2 with limestone or dolomite. This is followed by CO2 liquefaction and disposal either underground or in the deep ocean. The Voisey’s Bay nickel project is cited as an example where appropriate location of a new smelter close to large dolomite or limestone deposits would lead to a virtually zero gas emission operation. Most of the electrical energy required for producing technically pure oxygen and for liquefying CO2 and transporting it to disposal can be derived from smelting a bulk sulphide concentrate and then reacting SO2 at high temperature. Provided the smelter gases are properly cleaned before sulphur fixation, the sulphated stone should be uncontaminated and environmentally benign and possibly of use in the building and construction industry.

This paper focusses on technological developments which occurred in the village of Deloro, Ontario between 1868 and 1919. These developments illustrate the manner in which improved metallurgical processes linked Ontario mineral resources to industrial expansion. Overview of Deloro The village of Deloro is in Hastings county, about 5 miles from the village of Marmora, the site of the old Marmora iron works and the more recent Marmoraton iron mine. In this area, the Canadian Shield meets the Great Lakes lowlands. The first settlement in the vicinity occurred in the 1820s and was associated with the Marmora iron works. Settlement grew around agriculture. Gold was discovered in Hastings county in 1868. Deloro - the name derives from gold - developed as a concentrated settlement in proximity to several gold mines and the related processing activities. By 1901, substantial smelting works were successfully producing gold and arsenic from local ores. The village was developing as a company town within the framework of benevolent paternalism. For reasons associated with markets and with local ore supplies, the Deloro mills were idle for a period beginning in 1902. Developments in later periods connected Deloro to world events. In 1903, silver was discovered at Cobalt, Ontario. By 1907, M.J. O'Brien, who owned mines at Cobalt, had purchased the Deloro works and was using them to process Cobalt-area ores*.

"Kirkland Lake Gold introduced battery equipped vehicles (BEVs) at the Macassa Mine in 2011. The fleet of underground BEV haulage trucks and loaders has grown over the years to over 30 units, the world’s largest, currently handling approximately 80% of the daily production tonnage. The inflow and outflow of air occur through a limited number of relatively small openings, which limits the air volume delivered to the underground workings. In addition to improving air quality, the reduced heat load generated by the BEV (when compared to diesel equipment) had a significant positive impact in the workplace. The use of BEV for material handling has enabled increases in production that would not have been possible using diesel equipment.INTRODUCTIONMacassa mine was developed as a track-drift access mine, with the most recent shaft (#3) sunk in 1986. A new mining complex, the South Mine Complex (SMC) was discovered below the 5025 foot elevation south of traditional mining areas, and the majority of mining now occurs in the SMC. The discovery of that zone has led to an internal ramp which is used to access the SMC and haul ore to #3 shaft.The amount of airflow that can be moved through the mine is limited by the existing infrastructure to surface. This amount was recently increased to near its practical maximum from 118 CMS (250 kCFM) to 151 CMS (320 kCFM).Both diesel and electric equipment are used at Macassa. Tethered Load-Haul-Dump Machines (LHDs) have been replaced with Battery Electric LHDs, due to their increased mobility and depth of the mine. Battery trucks continue to replace locomotives to transport both ore and waste to the shaft, as mining has transitioned from tracked levels to trackless level and haulage has transitioned from horizontal levels to an inclined ramp.EQUIPMENT FLEET AT MACASSAMost of the primary material movers utilized at Macassa Mine are battery operated. As the mine goes deeper the battery technology will continue to be critical to the success of the operations. With over 300,000 hours of proven operation success, the battery technology and equipment will continue to be a major part of Macassa’s future."

Annual oil production from the Canadian Oil Sands in Northern Alberta has been rising for several decades, and more ore and overburden are excavated each year from an increasing number of open pit mines. Overburden meeting certain specifications will be used to dam tailings and fill open pits, but the remaining material must be stored in overburden storage structures (OBSS). Well-designed overburden storage structures are more stable and cost less in the short- and long-term. The purpose of this paper is to explore OBSS designs that will be stable yet economical in the short- and long-term. The geological background of the site is briefly discussed, including the effect of each of the main geologic layers (recently deposited till and muskeg, Clearwater Formation clay shales, McMurray Formation oil sands, and the Devonian limestone) on the slope stability of the OBSS. Cost is considered in the analysis when balancing between minimizing costs (steeper slopes) and acceptable factors of safety (flatter slopes), all the while considering the financial consequences of failure. Potential failure planes are identified and probabilistic analysis is conducted on the critical failure surface. The variations in the factor of safety caused by varying pore water pressure, friction angle, and cohesion, are plotted and discussed.

The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.

Recirculation is the major concern associated with the utilization of booster fans. In controlled recirculation, a portion of the return air is purposely mixed with the intake air and the mixture is directed towards a working district, while the air quantity and gas concentrations in the air are closely monitored and managed. The objectives of this study were to determine the gas concentration in intake and return airways during controlled recirculation, and to determine the recirculation fraction for multiple headings. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory model to determine the effect of controlled recirculation on the quality of air circulated through the working faces. Preliminary results showed that recirculation is beneficial to ventilation planning because it reduces the build-up of air contaminants at the working faces and reduces the overall power consumptions. The experimental results were used to quantify the recirculation fraction and to calibrate ventilation models of the laboratory model. These models are used to simulate the controlled recirculation and to predict the gas concentrations in multiple headings.

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

The history and development of this property is more or less familiar to nearly everyone connected with the mining industry, so that only a brief outline of the more important facts will be given in this article. In 1916, a small pilot mill was constructed by the British Columbia Copper Company at Copper Mountain, and during 1916 and 1917 test work was conducted to determine the possibility of concentrating the ore and also to work out a suitable flow-sheet. In the spring of 1917, the location of a mill site at Allen by, which is about 8,% miles from Copper Mountain, and near the Similkameen river, was decided on, and the designing of a 2,000-ton plant was then worked out by Bradley, Bruff and Labarthe. Early in 1918, the actual construction of the concentrator began, and, after considerable labour difficulties, it was completed in 1920. During this period of construction, the West Kootenay Power Company ran a 60,000-volt power line over from Greenwood, a distance of 102 miles, and also built a sub-station at Allenby to take care of the mine and mill. The concentrator was started up on October 20th, 1920, and ran until December 11th, 1920, a total of 18,354 tons of ore being milled. The results of this short period of operation were encouraging, but, due to tlie prevailing low price of copper and high wages, it was necessary to shut down until a more favourable time. During the latter half of 1923, some work was done on remodelling the mill. This work continued until January 8th, 1924, when it was suspended.

"Evaporites abound in the Western Canada sedimentary basin, recurring throughout the stratigraphic column and widely scattered over the basin region. Alberta, situated centrally over the basin, includes many of the evaporites within its borders, but only a few have the right geological conditions to form potential economic deposits of salt or gypsum. These include the Middle Devonian Elk Point Group and related evaporites, Upper Devonian Wabamun Group-Palliser Formation evaporites, and evaporites of the 'Triassic Charlie Lake and Whitehorse formations.Salt deposits underlie almost half of Alberta. The major deposits belong to the Elk Point Group, which includes thick salt units in the Lotsberg, Cold Lake and Prairie Evaporite formations. Another, younger salt deposit in the Wabamun Group has only local distribution. Elk Point salts have a maximum aggregate thickness of 430 m in east-central Alberta. The deposits deepen southwestward across the province, from minimum depths of210 m at Fort McMurray to 1820 m at Edmonton.The thickest, most extensive salt deposits are the upper Lotsberg and Prairie Evaporite salts. Both have excellent development potential. The upper Lotsberg is up to 150 m thick, consists of clear, very coarse crystalline halite with only minor impurities, and has a notable lack of non-salt strata in its succession. Analytical data for the Lotsberg Salt show extraordinary chemical purity. Prairie Evaporite Salt differs lithologically from the Lotsberg in having a significant non-salt component. The deposit is up to 200 m thick and consists of medium crystalline halite, brownish coloured and cloudy as a result of finely dispersed impurities. The main impurities-shale, anhydrite and dolomite-are most prevalent as interbeds in the salt succession, ranging from very thin laminae to beds several metres thick. Although of lesser purity, the Prairie Evaporite Salt is shallower, thicker and more extensive than the Lotsberg and the salt quality is quite acceptable for most industrial uses."

"A program of sampling in Canadian washeries was carried out by the Coal Research Laboratory (CRL) over a period of two years to evaluate the performance of various density separators in these operations(1). Operating data on quality and recovery of products, separation efficiencies and cutpoints for each separator type are compared with data predicted using computer models developed from previously existing data.The Heavy Medium Cyclone (HMC), Heavy Medium Bath (HMB) and jig models give predictions of recoveries and qualities of products for sizes coarser than 10mm with absolute value of error mean less than 7 per cent, whereas predictions of the Water Only Cyclone (WOC) model for -10mmfine coal are with absolute value of error mean less than 8 per cent. Although less accurate for -10 mm fine coal, the HMC and jig models produce predictions of recoveries with absolute value of error mean less than 2 per cent and quality of products predictions with absolute value of error mean less than 28per cent which are generally acceptable because more liberation in the fine fractions appears to compensate for any difference in the accuracy of separation, resulting in good prediction of the clean product. However, ash content of the actual fine refuse was lower than predicted. The difference is attributed to the highly friable nature of Canadian coals which tends to cause an excessive loss of coal fines to the fine refuse.A comparison study based on quality and recovery of products is made between the Dutch State Mines (DSM) models and the recently modified models, both produced comparable predictions."

"Accident prevention has been an on-going priorty for five years. In 1987, adherence to the ILCI five-star rating loss control program was started, and a first star was awarded. Extensive training programs have been undertaken to establish standard procedures and upgrade employee skills. Due to its location, Selbaie owns and rents housing in the town of Joutel and contracts a busing service to and from the mine. Employees from other areas are lodged in dormitories and fed in the site dining room. Accounting and warehousing services are carried out in efficient fashion. Employee relations are structured to provide prompt resolution of complaints and differences. No lost time due to industrial relations differences has been encountered during the history of the mine.Safety and Loss ControlAll mines are concerned and occupied with a wide range of activities to ensure the safety of its employees. Selbaie is no exception. Programs to achieve success in safety and loss control have been implanted since the start of construction and development at Selbaie and have followed three interesting stages of evolution."
