Process improvements which have reduced the lead content of slag from the Brunswick lead blast furnace are described. Microscope examination and electron microprobe analyses, supported by the results of slag settling and viscosity tests, showed that typically about 70% of the lead in the lead blast-furnace slag was present in the form of entrained prills of metallic lead. The total lead content was found to increase with the magnetic susceptibility of the slag. Measurements in the furnace settler indicated the presence of a magnetite-rich layer between bullion and slag, arising from high magnetite levels in the slag. This layer was believed to inhibit the settling of entrained lead from the slag. Tracer tests showed that the average slag residence time in the settler was less than 2 minutes. Improvements in coke quality and sizing, which led to a reduction in the slag magnetite content, and the installation of a larger settler and a continuous Roy tapper, have all contributed to a significant decrease in the slag lead content.

"The legacy of abandoned mines in Canada creates issues that impact on both the health and safety of Canadians and the environment. Solutions to the problems of abandoned minesites require a detailed understanding of site conditions, the engineering solutions which may be relevant, and planning for effective use of the land. In this paper, the authors outline the basic thrusts that have been developed at CANMET to address this problem. These include: multiprovincial agreements to develop a national database; methods of site rendering; a ten-year research program to develop engineering approaches; the review of a large number of case studies; and outlining the associated risks. Examples of the applications of this research are provided in the areas of: municipal, provincial, and federal co-operative projects; site-specific applications; and international linkages."

"The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. "Rare earth separation by solvent extraction (SX) requires multiple separation plants each consisting of many extract, scrub, and strip stages to separate the individual metals. SX modeling advances have brought benefits to circuit design and process optimization by quickly narrowing test conditions without the need for exhaustive laboratory studies. Modeling can be used to optimize circuit configuration, O/A ratios, and acidities, which allows for CAPEX and OPEX savings. A comparison between pilot plant data and the results expected from modeling is presented for rare earth separations with CYANEX® 572.INTRODUCTIONRare earth separations can be difficult due to limited separation between the elements (Xie, Zhang, Dreisinger, & Doyle, 2014). This requires relatively complex solvent extraction circuits utilizing multiple extract, scrub, and strip stages as well as multiple SX configurations to achieve the desired metal purities. Designing rare earth circuits can be complex, and significant time and testing may be necessary to determine the required staging and optimal conditions.Circuit modeling for rare earth separations has been introduced to the industry using CYANEX® 572 extractant (Soderstrom, McCallum, Jakovljevic, & Quilodran, 2014). CYANEX® 572 is an acidic organophosphorus extractant formulation which has a weaker ligand-metal complex strength than that of the traditionally used phosphonic acid extractants. This allows efficient extraction while requiring a significantly lower acid concentration for stripping (Wang, Li, Zhao, Dong, & Sun, 2015). The reduced acid requirement in strip is expected to provide OPEX savings.The modeling can be utilized to quickly determine the required acidity and organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio for a given separation. It is also expected to reduce CAPEX requirements as optimal staging can be determined, and implemented.CYANEX® 572, combined with modeling, was utilized to produce a purified dysprosium (Dy) stream. To achieve this separation, multiple SX circuits were designed and operational conditions specified to separate Dy from the mixed rare earth chloride feed."

"The response of cemented backfills subjected to simulated blast loadings is studied using centrifugal modelling techniques. Scaling requirements for centrifugal modelling are developed and the results of the similitude analysis show that an acceleration field is required to capture the true dynamic response of backfill models. Experiments have been conducted at various centrifugal accelerations. The effects of ring blasting were simulated by an impact loading on the exposed fill face. The behaviour of the cemented backfill was monitored with accelerometers as well as dynamic stress gauges.Cemented backfill response to impact loadings was found to depend strongly on simulated gravitational stress level. Results also show that the characteristics of the response changes with distance from the impact. Finally, the results of the models were used to predict prototype peak accelerations, velocities and displacements. The results reported in this study indicate that centrifuge modelling may be a useful tool for dynamic studies of blast damage to backfills. Centrifuge modelling can be carried out at low costs and can be used to design prototype instrumentation systems. IntroductionThe response of cemented mine backfills to blast loadings is of concern to the mining industry because these backfills provide local and regional support during ore pillar extraction. Considerable research has been reported on the static stability (Smith et al., 1983) and on effects of reinforcements on cemented backfills (Mitchell, 1989). However, information regarding dynamic aspects of cemented backfill is limited. O'Hearn and Swan (1989) reported on the response of cemented backfill to blast loading, but these blasts were not very dose to the backfill . A schematic representation of a rock-backfill system is shown in Figure I.The mechanics of transfer of explosive energy to rock and subsequently to the backfill, and the resulting responses, are complex. Achison (1968) listed more than twenty factor s affecting the blast fragmentation of rock and grouped these into the categories of explosive parameters, charge parameters and rock parameters. Although significant advances have been made, during the past two decades, in understanding the mechanics of blasting, the degree of uncertainty associated with predicting the behaviour of backfills subjected to dynamic loadings makes the application of simple design safety factors insufficient. Comprehensive testing programs or prototype instrumentation is required to evaluate the risks associated with blast or earthquake loadings on backfill."

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. Currently, the operation consists of an underground mine and integrated processing plant. Uranium is produced from leaching of flotation tailings and is a co-product to copper cathode with by-product gold and silver bullion. The Olympic Dam geometallurgy team began studying ore from the Southern Mine Area (SMA) in 2006 and soon discovered uranium behaviour was far more variable than the behaviour in the Northern Mine Area, which had been mined from the start of the operation in 1988. The primary objective of Olympic Dam geometallurgy is to develop metallurgical performance predictors that reliably describe the process performance of different ore types and distribute these into the resource block model for use as a fundamental input into mine planning. The nature of the uranium mineralisation (compositionally and texturally complex and highly variable) meant that classic mineralogy techniques alone could not provide the resolution required for prediction of uranium extraction. However, the combination of quantitative mineralogy, results from laboratory-scale leach tests and modelling within the geometallurgy program has enabled prediction of both uranium flotation recovery (via association with sulphides) and uranium leach extraction, including at variable leach conditions. These stope-based predictions have supported trade-off decisions between operating costs and uranium revenue, and have predicted the changing recovery as the mining operations have moved into the Southern Mine Area in recent years.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. "Plastic yielding and flow in metals is dependent on the microscopic process of simple shear along crystallographic planes and directions known as slip. Thus, by altering the crystallographic direction of the stress axis or placing constraints in the direction of plastic flow, anisotropy of yield strength for the same material is observed. This phenomenon is called texture strengthening. The application of this concept to highly anisotropic crystal structures such as the hexagonal group of titanium and zirconium alloys, the former in missile casing and the latter in nuclear reactor fuel tubing, seems obvious. The outstanding example in cubic structures is the case of deep-drawing steel. The R value, the width strain over the thickness strain during a tensile test, is taken as a measure of texture strengthening. In face-centred cubic structures, texture strengthening has been completely ignored on the basis that materials with R less than one are not amenable to this beneficiation. This study will review two aspects of texture which will lead to strengthening, first the thermal stability of the deformed microstructure, which is dependent on the stress axis, and second, the texture strengthening aspect of fcc metals.A review of recovery and recrystallization in textured aluminum wires, copper and cupro-nickel sheet will be presented with the view of extending these concepts to the manufacture of heat-exchanger tubing. The superior creep properties of specially processed commercial products such as TD-Ni, TD-NiCr and MAR-M200 will be shown to be a manifestation of the same physical phenomena."

TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man's first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less 'Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man's inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

"The Mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are located at 48°16'N latitude, 79°00'W longitude, in Rouyn township, northwestern Quebec. Six hundred and forty acres in area, they lie directly north of, and contiguous to, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines Limited. The north arm of Osisko Lake covers a large area of the southern part of the property. The orebodies lie below the Jake with one body extending through to the bedrock surface.The property was staked in 1922, and was originally known as the Murray Claims. The group attracted interest from numerous exploration companies because of the proximity of the Noranda orebodies.The United Verde Extension Company, of Arizona, optioned the claims in 1926. They sank a shaft to a depth of 235 feet, at a short distance from the Noranda boundary. From a level established at a depth of 215 feet they completed 3000 feet of exploratory driving from which 6000 feet of diamond drilling was done. Only a small body of siliceous gold ore was found before they dropped their ·option.In 1928, The Mining Corporation of Canada purchased a 90 per cent interest in the property. An operating company, later named Quemont Mining Corporation, was formed. An electrical survey was carried out on a portion of the property, followed by deepening of the shaft to 922 feet. Levels were established at 500 and 900 feet, and 4,800 feet of driving and more than 3000 feet of diamond drilling were carried out from them.Geological knowledge at that time recognized that a major break, the Horne Creek fault, lay not far inside the south boundary. Striking north 80 degrees east, the fault dipped south at 85 degrees. The rock on the north side of the fault was massive rhyolite; to the south, meta-diabase and a little rhyolite. A left-handed movement was indicated by a 600-foot offset on a north striking diabase dyke. The small body of siliceous gold ore, referred to previously, was confined to the 215 level."

"This paper describes the general layout of the environmental monitoring scheme at Devco 's No. 26 Colliery, including wall face ventilation, fan performance and methane drainage, and then goes on to discuss the sensors, the outstation layout, the surf ace control room and the protection of the system.IntroductionCape Breton coal mines have been pioneers in the use of the latest technology in mining coal on this continent. To mention just one example, continuous methane monitoring at the coal face was started in 1976 and the idea of automatically stopping the face conveyor during high gas levels using the face signalling system was conceived and developed by CBDC engineers.With the introduction of remote environmental monitoring, No. 26 Colliery will be the first underground coal mine in Canada and possibly in North America to have computer-based comprehensive environmental monitoring.Traditionally, surveillance of the mine environment has been based mainly on periodic checks by portable or hand-held monitors. Although this method proved adequate, it has some limitations, namely:1) restricted 'number of observations and samples;2) relatively long time between taking measurements and availability of results for assessment.With remote monitoring, the above limitations are overcome because (a) monitoring is continuous and (b) monitored data are updated quickly (typically 5-7 sec.). Remote monitoring also provides a centralized 'information center' at the surface from where the entire mine environment can be monitored. Details of modes in which data can be displayed and features available at the location will be discussed later in the paper."

To be competitive on the international market, the Canadian mining industry must reduce its costs, increase its productivity and maintain a high standard of safety. There is a great need today for improved methods that would allow the detection of geological structures in advance of mining to reduce dilution and the monitoring of underground structures to increase safety. This will facilitate planning for optimum exploitation of the mine and to increase production at lower costs. This paper discusses two examples of more efficient mine planning using new technologies such as Ground Probing Radar (GPR). In Kidd Creek mine, GPR technology was used at the 2500and 2600 levels to (1) monitor the stability of the sill pillar; (2) locate the presence of disseminated sulphide pockets in the sill pillar for extracting the mineral content; (3) monitor the stope backs and wall structures to evaluate the effect of on-time filling sequences; and (4)assess rockfill quality in terms of the presence of voids and fractures within the rockfilled areas. In the New Brunswick coal mine in Minto, GPR was used along with core log data to map and construct a 3D block of a section of the bench showing the relative position of different layers overlying the coal seam.

Higher prices for natural gas or oil have motivated the copper industry to reexamine the modes of oxygen and oxy-fuel burner usage at operating plants. With rising energy costs and the growing importance of environmental protection, burner usage and burner operations have become the focus of several investigations and optimization efforts. One possible approach to lower energy usage is through combustion using tonnage oxygen. When such oxygen is used, the flame temperature increases and operational efficiency is improved. As well, with the correct technology, due to the presence of lower levels of harmful substances such as NOx in the off gas, there is improved environmental performance. As regards copper production, furnaces are employed for both concentrate smelting or for melting and casting operations. The use of tonnage oxygen in concentrate burners for smelting provides for a higher thermal efficiency. For furnaces employed for melting, air-operated burners may in fact have an initial advantage because a long radiant flame is typically generated, thus providing for a higher degree of heat transmission. This paper describes the new experimental burner chamber of Messer Austria GmbH which provides for testing of the combustion of natural gas with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and the use of special water cooling ducts that simulates a metal charge during melting, The operational effectiveness of the burner is determined from temperature and off-gas analysis data. "Quelques soixante-dix-sept plutons présents dans la Sous-Province de Pontiac et dans la partie centrale de la Sous-Province de I’Abitibi ont fait I ’objet d’une reconnaissance systématique. Ils ont été regroupes en huit suites plutoniques majeures et trois suites mineures à partir de critères géologiques et petro logiques. Parmi les suites majeures, quatre représentent I' activité intrusive la plus ancienne dans la région. L’une d' entre e/les est représentée par deux complexes anorthosito-gabbroi' ques lites et les trois autres comprennent les orthogneiss dioritiques a leucotonalitiques et les intrusions dons la composition varie de diurétique et granodioritique à leucotonalitique. Leur mise en place peut être pretectonique a syn ou tarditectonique; certains plutons sont synvolcaniques. Quelques data/ions U! Pb effectuées à propos de ces roches donnent des âges s' étalant entre 2 718 et 2 694 MA. Les données géochimiques indiquent la présence des deux lignées magmatiques, tholemique et calcoalcaline bien qu’il n'y ait aucune évidence de relations entre elles dans I' espace et dans le temps. Ces suites magmatiques différentes peuvent provenir soit d’une croute tholemique impliquée dans un processus de subduction soit directement du manteau.Les trois autres suites majeures comprenant des monzodiorites, des granodiorites et des monzonites ainsi que les deux suites mineures comprenant des syenites correspondent à un évènement intrusif plus jeunesse déroulant entre2 694 et2 680 MA. Ces roches sont syn, tarti a post tectoniques et sont enrichies en alcalins, Ba, Sr et terres rares legeres par rapport aux quatre suites précédentes. Leurs caractères chimiques prop res suggèrent qu' e/les proviennent d' une source différente par rapport à celle precedemment citee.La derniere suite plutonique majeure correspond a un monzogranite leucocrate, riche en pegmatite, également syn a tard tectonique, dont I' age n' est pas connu avec précision. ll représente le seul granite ""vrai"" de la région et dérive d’une anatexie soit des meta sédiments soit des granodiorites-tonalites plus anciennes. La troisième suite plutonique mineure correspond a quatre stocks de granodiorite porphyrique qui n’ont pas été étudiés en détail.ABSTRACTSevenly-sevenplutons have been identified in the east-centra/part of the Abitibi Subprovince and adjacent Pontiac Subprovince. These have been subdivided, on the basis of geological and petrological criteria, into eight major and three minor plutonic suite. Four of the major suite, which represent the oldest intrusive activity in the area, range in composition from dioritic-leucotonalitic orthogneisses to diorite-granodiorite/leucotonalite and include two layered anorthosite- gabbro complexes. Their time of emplacement ranges from pretectonic to syn-late-tectonic and some plutons are synvolcanic. U-Pb zircon ages for these rocks range from 2 718 to 2 694 Ma. Geochemical data indicate the presence of both calc-alkaline and tholeiitic magma series for these rocks although there is no evidence time and space relationships between the two. The different magma series also suggest the derivation of these rocks from two sources, either from subduced tholeiitic crust or directly from the mantle. Three major monzodiorite-granodiorite, monzonite, and two minor syenite suites comprise a younger inlrusive event ranging from 2 694 to 2 680 Ma in age. These rocks are syn-, late- to post-tectonica and, compared to the above four plutonic suites, are enriched in alkalis, Ba, Sr and light Rare Earth Elements.Their distinctive geochemistry suggests that these rocks were derived from a different source region than for the older plutonic suites. The remaining major plutonic suite consists of leucocratic, pegmatite-rich, monzogranite-granodiorite. These rocks are also syn- to late-tectonic but their ages are not known with precision. They are the only ""true"" granites in the area and were derived by the partial melting of either older"

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

"This paper is a market-oriented review of the industry's present and forecasted performance, considering some of the principal factors influencing natural resource development. The author illustrates the steady consumption growth of nickel, and stresses the need for a quantitative long-range approach to production, consumption and the supply/ demand balance on a worldwide basis. Objective consideration of this data exposes some popular misconceptions. What is the significance of the increasing reliance on lateritic sources? New• facilities, new processing methods and new product forms are illustrated as further evidence of the industry's determination to satisfy the needs and preferences of nickel consumers. Examples indicate how product forms must accommodate to fast-evolving end-use technology. A review of nickel's price performance is used as a base from which to explore tomorrow's price trends."

"IntroductionNOTE.-All figures on the supply and consumption of coal in Canada cited in this paper were collected and reported by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The friendly and efficient co-operation of the officials of the Bureau. is the foundation upon which it has been my privilege to rely in the preparation of this and two earlier papers ( 1). My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. For these explanations, the earlier papers may be consulted."
