"The boron-bearing iron concentrate was extracted from ludwigite ore by the process of magnetic-gravity separation. In order to fully utilize the refractory ore and meet the boron consumption of China, a novel process for separation of boron from iron in boron-bearing iron concentrate was proposed in this paper. In particular, laboratory scale experiments of improving boron reactivity were performed. Fine boron-bearing iron concentrate briquettes were reduced by bituminous coal completely at 1125 °C for 150 min. The effect of sodium carbonate, which was used as an additive in the roasting process, was investigated. The addition of sodium carbonate decreased the boron reactivity and facilitated the volatilization of boron. The influence of diverse cooling methods of the reduced samples on the boron reactivity was studied. The results indicated that boron reactivity could reach up to 80.76% when the reduced samples were cooled by rapid water quenching. In addition, the magnetic material containing 92.71 % Fe with a recovery of 95.11 % and boron-rich non-magnetic material containing 14.51% B2O3 with a recovery 88.85% could be obtained by low-intensity magnetic separation. The magnetic material and boron-rich non-magnetic material were good raw materials for steel-making and borax production, respectively.INTRODUCTION Ludwigite ore is abundant in Liaoning province of China, with 28.43 Mt B2O3 accounting for 57% of the boron resources of the country (Liu et al., 2006). However, it has not yet been utilized on an industrial scale due to its complex mineralogy and fine mineral dissemination (Wang, Wang, Ding, Ma & Xue, 2012). At present, boron-bearing iron concentrate and boron concentrate can be obtained from ludwigite ore using magnetic-gravity separation. The boron concentrate contains B2O3 12%~16%, which can be used as a high-quality raw material for the boron chemical industry after activated roasting, but the B2O3 content in the iron concentrate reaches up to 4%~6%. In order to further separate boron and iron from boron-bearing iron concentrate, a blast furnace and a solid pre-reduction followed by electric arc furnace melting have been proposed (Liu, Cui & Zhang, 1998; Wang et al., 2012). However, both of these two current routes face the same crucial problem that molten boron-rich slag has to be cooled slowly to obtain the alkali-dissolution activity of boron, which affects the yield of boron resource."

"The oxidation of Quebracho was evaluated by acid-butanol assay, which indicates depolymerization of Quebracho. Anthocyanidin, an oxidation product of Quebracho, is stable at 95?C for up to 2 h. The ionization, complexation, and oxidation properties of Quebracho were discussed. Complexation of metal-Quebracho occurs at ambient temperature. The formation of complex precipitates is influenced by the acidity of the solution. Temperature is another important parameter that influences the oxidation and the complexation of Quebracho. Quebracho-ferric complex precipitate forms at 90?C, 0.1 mol/L H2SO4. The formation of Quebracho-metal complex in the leach solution is a possible reason for the consumption of Quebracho. Quebracho molecules adsorption on the mineral surface is reduced by consumption of Quebracho, resulting in poor sulfur dispersing effect in the leaching process. INTRODUCTIONQuebracho is used as a sulfur dispersing agent (SDA) in the pressure leaching of zinc concentrate as stated in U.S. Patent No. 3,867,268 (1975). It prevents the zinc sulfide particles from being coated with molten sulfur, thus preventing the inhibition of the zinc leaching reaction. Recently, the sulfur dispersing effect of Quebracho was investigated in the oxygen pressure leaching of nickel concentrate. The oxygen pressure leaching of pentlandite can be represented by reactions 1-3."

"The concept of risk is well established in the mining industry. It is acknowledged when estimates of reserves are expressed as proven or probable, when mining and metallurgical recoveries are applied to the ore, and when contingencies are added to costs. However, it is difficult to provide a quantitative assessment of risk. The significant sources of risk in a mineral project and how these are addressed in project evaluations are discussed. The discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk.IntroductionThis paper examines the components of the discounted cash flow discount rate and proposes a method of estimating project-specific discount rates. The motivation for this work comes from experience of project evaluations in which owners and purchasers had agreed on virtually every aspect of the evaluation except how much the project was worth. Agreement was reached on reserves, grad~, recovery, capital costs, operating costs, taxes, and, by combining these components, even on the fmal cash flow values. The only difference in opinion concerned the discount rate to be used in the calculation of the net present value. Depending on the life of the project, such differences of opinion can cause a variation of more than 50% in the value placed on a project! This is illustrated in Figure 1."

Variation in content of some of the major and minor elements in the Lake Dufault granodiorite near Noranda, Quebec has been studied. The element variation and specific gravity data show a pattern consistent with the concept of a concentrically zoned intrusive on the western side of Lake Dufault with a potassium-rich core and a calcium-rich inner zone. The part of the intrusive on the eastern side of Lake Dufault is of more problematical origin, but the suggestion is made that it has resulted from assimilation of volcanic rock by the intrusive. THE purpose of this investigation was to test the application of x-ray fluorescence analysis to the study of variation in chemical com-position of the Lake Dufault granodiorite. "Drillhole placement involves benefits, costs, and constraints. Benefits are related to the drilling campaign value, which includes maximizing “indicated” and “measured” resources. Costs include drilling, rig movement, and access construction. Constraints include infeasible areas, maximum and minimum angles of drilling, maximum depth of drilling, and budget. Manually planning drillholes that meet these constraints is suboptimal. A framework for straight drillhole optimization that accounts for benefits, costs, and constraints is presented. The method aims to maximize the value of resources converted from “inferred” to indicated and measured. The framework is demonstrated for a Nevada gold deposit and outperforms manually selected drillholes.RÉSUMÉ Le choix de l’emplacement d’un trou de forage s’accompagne d’avantages, de coûts et de contraintes. Les avantages sont liés à la valeur d’une campagne de forage, qui comprend l’optimisation des ressources « indiquées » et « mesurées ». Les coûts englobent le forage, le déplacement de l’appareil de forage et la construction des routes d’accès. IT is the purpose of this essay to give a reasonably complete description of shaft sinking under a rock pentice in a small Northern Ontario gold property. Hallnor is in many ways an exceptional mine, but the sinking operations here described are but typical examples of the excellent practice for which Canadian mines and mining engineers are justly famous the world over. The worth of the subject lies, therefore, nor in its originality, but in its soundness; not in the spectacular, but in the economical and safe. Attention is particularly drawn to the excellent safety record and to the exceptionally low overall sinking cost. INTRODUCTION Prior to April, 1939, the Hallnor No. 1 shaft had been sunk vertically to a depth of 997 feet below the surface. It is a three-compartment shaft, 19 ft. 10 in. by 7ft. 7 in. outside the timbers (see Figure 1).

Demand for both gem and industrial diamonds is very strong. Synthetic production supplies industrial uses, but synthetic gems remain inferior and expensive, so the large gem market is supplied by mining. Several major mines have been depleted, and the market is receptive to new sources of high quality gems. Canada's Precambrian terrane, extending across the Canadian Shield and under the Phanerozoic cover of the Plains and Hudson Bay, has excellent potential for diamonds, but exploration conditions are difficult due to recent glaciation. Early world exploration relying on recognition of diamond in alluvial sediments was adequate to launch pre- 1900 production from India, Brazil, and Africa. Exploration success in Canada, as was the case in Russia and other more recently discovered sources, however, had to await large investments in effort supported by advanced science and technology. Canadian exploration in many ways is similar to that in other regions, relying on analysis of tectonics, indicator minerals, geophysical surveys, and multiple stages of drilling and sampling. Very different from other regions, however, is Canada's surficial environment, in which recent glaciation has caused fresh indicator minerals to be transported hundreds of km. Exploration accelerated in Canada after 1960, first in Ontario and the Arctic Islands, then in Saskatchewan in 1988, and most importantly after the Chuck Fipke - Stew Blusson discovery at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, in 1991 that led to the billion-dollar BHP - Dia Met Ekati Mine that opened in 1998. In 2003, production from Ekati will be supplemented by that from the similar and nearby Diavik Mine of Rio Tinto and Aber. These mines will bring Canadian output to over 10% of world supply, and will position Canada with Botswana and Russia as world leaders in production of high quality gem diamonds. There could be other mines as well, as sites across the Arctic and in the south from Alberta to Québec are being explored by an array of companies, including De Beers, other majors, and several juniors.

"The Griffith Mine is located 200 miles northeast of Winnipeg and is 30 miles south of Red Lake, Ontario. Owned by The Steel Company of Canada Limited and managed by Pickands Mather & Co., it has an annual rated capacity of 1.5 million tons of high-grade iron ore pellets with an analysis of 66.3 per cent iron and 4.5 per cent silica.Development of the mine and construction of the plant got underway in January of 1966 and operations began in February of 1968. The orebodies outcrop on the shore of Bruce lake and run under the lake. The ore in its crude form is a metasedimentary low-grade magnetite and occurs in a highly folded banded formation. The average iron analysis of the crude is 29 per cent and the over-all weight recovery is 32 per cent.In order to mine the portion of the orebody under the lake, the soft varved clay on the lake bottom was hydraulically dredged and a dyke constructed of rock, with till used to provide an impervious seal on the lake side of the dyke, prior to dewatering.Mining is carried out by conventional open-pit tech-niques. Ore dressing is achieved by combining one crushing stage and a two-stage grinding system, with beneficiation by magnetic separation, hydroseparation and flotation. Agglomerating is done with conventional balling drums and pelletizing is carried out in shaft furnaces.Of interest and discussed in detail are the 32-foot autogenous cascade mills ."

Shaft lining reinforcing analysis of two shafts under construction has been presented in this study. The first shaft was driven from the surface, while the second was deepened. Mining and geological conditions have been studied with respect to the lining capacity. The improvement of shaft stability comprised two elements, i.e. reinforcement of the shaft lining capacity and improvement of the strength properties of the rock mass. In both tested cases, the particular hazard was connected with non uniform loadings of the lining, which could generate shearing stresses within lining structure. Thus such elements as armored concrete with high strength properties, bolting and injection sealing of the rock mass, and the use of special ring reinforcing the shaft lining have been used in order to reinforce the shaft-rock mass system. Practical conclusions related with new technological solutions, allowing the rock mass and shaft lining reinforcement, have been included for the present study. "Due diligence reviews are an essential part of mineral property acquisitions. One of the primary reasons to complete an environmental review prior to exploration property acquisition is to assess the potential environmental liability. It is critical to identify the potential reclamation costs or existing environmental liability associated with the exploration property. A review of the existing condition of the property and its history can allow prioritization of exploration targets and ease future expenditures for historic damages. IntroductionIn Canada and some other jurisdictions, the purchaser of a property is assumed to know, and is (in the absence of deceit or fraud) financially responsible for, what is purchased. A plea of ignorance, at least from the perspective of environmental liability, is not an acceptable excuse to avoid responsibility (Nelson, 1994). Therefore, if an exploration company (for the purposes of this paper, any organization conducting exploration work) purchases a property that has environmental contamination, the new owner is liable for the cost to reclaim the site to an acceptable level. The cost to reclaim the site is the environmental liability. The new owner is responsible for existing environmental liability of the property, even if the exploration company’s personnel were not aware of the problem. In simplest terms, buyers beware. Therefore, in order to protect the exploration company’s interests, the exploration manager should determine the characteristics of the property of interest prior to purchase or other involvement, and exercise due diligence.The term “due diligence” is often used in the mining industry. To ensure clarity, in this paper’s context, the author has chosen to use the following meaning: “… due diligence is used to describe a detailed data review, generally in connection with the purchase or sale of a mineral property, the approval of a large capital expenditure, or the borrowing of a large sum of money” (Smith, 1997).Directors of the exploration company are held liable for the decisions made, unless they have relied in good faith on,“…a written report of the auditor, or a report of a lawyer, accountant, engineer, appraiser, or other person whose profession lends credibility to a statement made by any such person” (OBCA, 1994)."

The microstructures and grain sizes of nanocrystalline Co and Co-1.1 wt % P alloys were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The corrosion properties of as-deposited and annealed Co-l.l wt % P alloys and pure nanocrystalline Co were studied in a deaerated 0.1M H2SO4 solution using electrochemical measurements and XPS surface analysis. Potentiodynamic polarization testing and impedance measurements revealed that an addition of P to pure nanocrystalline Co improved the anodic-corrosion resistance, however, this enhanced corrosion resistance was compromised by the heat treatment process at 350 and 800°C. The corroded surface of annealed nanocrystalline Co-1.1 wt % P at 350°C exhibited a more porous P-enriched layer compared with the as-deposited case. A sample annealed at 800°C corroded uniformly showing second-phase precipitates. The enhanced corrosion resistance of as-deposited nanocrystalline Co-1.1 wt % P was attributed to the elemental P on the surface that acted to hinder the anodic dissolution kinetics of surface Co following an initial selective dissolution of Co. However, at a higher anodic overpotential region, the superior corrosion resistance of Co-l.l wt% P alloys did not last because of the formation of a non-protective surface film consisting of mainly hypophosphite and phosphate as well as elemental P.

In the overall open pit mine planning process, mining phase design is a strategic driver in guiding and constructing the block extraction sequence and determining the annual net cash flow distribution. Mining phase design should obey some practical constraints, such as ?minimum mining width? and ?flat mining phase bottom?, to allow space for haul road development and truck and shovel access on each bench. However, these practical mining phase design requirements are not taken into account in all first-cut mining phase design methods and post-processing is always required to convert an impractical design to a practical one, resulting in a potentially significant loss of Net Present Value (NPV) relative to the first-cut impractical designs. In this paper, we present a method using a meta-heuristic algorithm ? Simulated Annealing ? to enforce those practical constraints in determining a mineable phase design whilst ensuring minimum NPV loss.

THIS PAPER will review Canada's fossil fuel situation as we understand it today and indicate some of the options available to meet our energy requirements during the next 15 years. It would therefore be helpful to examine Canada's total energy requirements and discuss the un certainties of the data base on which we must base future energy investment decisions. On the world scene, Canada is at the top of the energy-consuming nations, using about 49 bbls of oil equivalent per caput/ year. This appears to be slightly ahead of the U.S. and of course much higher than that of many countries. It is generally accepted that there is a more or less direct relationship between energy consumption and material standard of living. However , as we know, Canada, when compared with other industrialized countries on a GNP, an individual-income or some other standard basis, is lower in the list. This situation may be explained by our more severe climate and a relatively small population distributed over a land mass second only to that of the Soviet Union.

The effect of plastic deformation on near-neutral pH stress corrosion cracking (SCC) also known as environmentally assisted cracking was studied by cracking rate measurements. All the tests were conducted in a synthetic near-neutral pH solution. The traditional potential drop tests using compact toughness (C-T) specimens with 2-3 mm long pre-cracks showed varying plastic deformation by rolling would increase the material's susceptibility to SCC. This was confirmed by cyclic loading tests using double notched flat tensile specimens with 200-300 µm long pre-cracks which gave the same results that the specimen with large scale plastic deformation by tensile loading had a relatively faster crack growth rate than that with only small scale plastic deformation.

The diffusion barrier coating system (DBC system) was designed to suppress interdiffusion between alloy substrate and coatings in addition to ensuring slow oxide growth at high temperatures. In this report the concept of the DBC system will be introduced, and the results obtained for various heat-resistant alloys are presented. In this DBC system the s-phase of the Re-Cr-Ni system was selected as the barrier and is formed by electroplating Re-Ni and Ni films from aqueous solutions, followed by Cr and/or Al pack cementations. A typical DBC system consists of Ni-base superalloy / triple s-Re based alloy layer / ?’-Ni3Al and/or ß-NiAl (with or without Pt addition) / a-Al2O3. It was found that the DBC system maintained its structure for long time exposures because the s phase has tie-lines with the ? and ?’ alloy substrate and the ?’ and/or ß coating. The s-Re based alloy can suppress both the inward Al diffusion and the outward diffusion of alloying elements. The DBC system was successfully applied to various heat-resistant alloys such as Ni-Mo and Fe-Cr-Al based alloys, and these alloys with the DBC system were creep-deformed slowly under external applied stresses. A simultaneous diffusion coating process for Al and Hf was developed using Hf+NH4Cl+Al2O3 pack cementation. To obtain reliable and long-life coatings the combination of alloy substrate, coating, and external scale should be considered as a total system, to optimize oxidation resistance, structural stability, and mechanical properties.

The platinum group metal (PGM) industry is currently reliant on the crush-mill-float-smelt-refine route to process PGM ores. However, there are many instances where this route would not be feasible. An alternative process route has been developed which involves heap bioleaching to extract base metals followed by heap reclamation and a water wash step, leading into heap cyanide leaching to extract precious metals. This process was evaluated through test work on samples of Platreef ore using laboratory scale columns. After 304 days 75% Ni and 93% Cu were extracted in the bioleach experiment at 65°C, and after 60 days 58% Pt, 99% Pd and 90% Au in the follow-up cyanide leach experiment at 50°C. A preliminary process flow sheet has been developed around this. Analysis via a mineral liberation analyser showed that the remaining Pt was in the form of the mineral sperrylite, which appeared to be slow leaching in cyanide in comparison to the other mineral types. Analysis of cyanide effluent solution showed high levels of thiocyanate, which present an environmental risk for disposal and high consumption of cyanide. Further studies to develop the process for commercial application in the South African PGM industry are outlined.

Extraction of gold and other metals from ores suspended in liquid slurries often involves gases (such as oxygen) as a participant in the reaction. An important factor then in setting the rate of extraction can be mass transfer of the gas into the liquid and/or solids. A number of recent studies have indicated that as solids loadings increase, mass transfer rates of gas into solid-liquid mixtures decreases. This would seem to imply that lower solids loadings would be beneficial to increased reaction rates. However, since it is the solids which are being reacted, a most intriguing paradox is created. More solids should lead to more surface area to react, but it seemingly also provides less gas to react. So is the reaction faster or slower as solids loadings increases? The creation of this paradox is imbedded in how mass transfer and reaction data is collected and measured, how it is analyzed and correlated, and finally on the rate controlling steps in the reaction. An alternative analysis of these studies is presented which clarifies and eliminates the paradox. The analysis applies to water slurries as used in gold or other metal leaching processes or in bio-hydrometallurgy, as well as to molten metal/solid/gas mixtures such as might be encountered in submerged gas injection.

Imperfections such as lack-of-fusion and undercut are inevitable in field welding of pipelines. Above a certain size, such defects must be removed or repaired. In the present state of the art, determination of allowable defect size is done by Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA). This requires measurement of toughness, and comparison of toughness with crack driving force. ECA methods used in current international pipeline standards will be reviewed and compared.

The Coxheath copper mine is situated on the north side of the Coxheath hills and opposite the French Vale, at a distance of about 10 miles southwest of Sydney, Cape Breton county. The deposit was discovered in 1880, and the first work on the property was carried out with local capital. Lacer some Boston men became interested and formed a Company to finance the undertaking. This group operated the mine intermittently for approximately 20 years, spending close to one million dollars on the undertaking. Three shafts were sunk to depths of 110, 190, and 340 feet, and further underground workings to the extent of approximately one-half mile were driven. Also, an extensive surface programme was carried out. in which many test pits and hundreds of feet of trenches were dug, Early in the summer of 1928 the Arno Mines, Limited, optioned the property and immediately started an exploration campaign. A series of trenches were dug along the parallel vein system, and over 4,000 feet of diamond-drilling was done. The results obtained were so encouraging that a mining plant was erected in the fall of chat year and No. 2 shaft was drained. A complete new plant was installed, consisting of one 120 h.p. Fairbanks-Morse Diesel engine, direct connected to a Sullivan angle compound, air compressor; an 80 h .p. Leonard boiler, which supplies power for the 7 by 11 Ingersoll-Rand hoist; and a Sullivan class C steel sharpener and oil furnace. Two 250-gallon Cameron pumps, one operated by steam and the other by air, were placed in the mine so that, in case of a break-down, the mine would not be flooded.
