THE property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims located on McKenzie island in Red lake. The mine is about 4,Y:l miles by water from the Howey townsite on the same lake, and about 95 miles north of Kenora, Ont. (see Figure 4). Mail and express are flown-in daily, winter and summer, from Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Kenora, and Winnipeg. All heavy supplies are freighted-in during the summer over a water route, using four marine railway portages, from Hudson, Ont., a distance of about 180 miles. During the winter, freighting over the same route is clone by tractor if necessary, but costs are three to four rimes the summer rate. Due to these conditions, large inventories of supplies must be kept on hand, varying from a spring minimum of $45,000 to a peak of $110,000 early in November. The average cost of all freight brought in from steel during 1937 was $0.01 per pound.

The application of biologically assisted methods for metal extraction in the mining industry has a long history, but development of modern techniques has been relatively slow. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in the industry with the recent development of methods to successfully treat base metals concentrates. Two major pilot plant programs for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates have been initiated in the past year and results from one are beginning to be released. This paper provides an overview of methods that have been applied in the past, from the earliest deliberate applications of the technology, through the copper and uranium heap and dump leach applications, the more highly engineered agitated tank leach gold applications and the developments currently taking place in the industry.

Abstract - The presence of fine-grained mineral intergrowths, the complex distribution of deleterious minor elements, and the variable base-metal contents in some assemblages commonly pose technical problems for the processing of volcanogenic massive sulfide ores. The beneficiation of most massive sulfide ores from the Iberian Pyrite Belt requires extremely fine grinding to liberation sizes of K80 = 15 µm to 25 µm. For several deposits, mapping of the ore types and metal zoning patterns has shown that the different ore types are distributed as ore lenses within the massive sulfides. Mineralogical, textural, and metallogenetic studies have provided an understanding of the distribution of both the vertical and the horizontal metal zonation in the orebodies. Because the efficiency of ore processing is affected by ore textures, and because the same mineral commonly has different textures and varies in chemical composition, a relationship between textures of the feed and the middlings must be established for all ore types defined at the deposit scale. Quantitative mineralogical methods have been developed to provide, on a timely basis, the information needed to optimize the concentration processes for the massive sulfide ores at the Aljustrel and Neves-Corvo deposits, Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portugal.

"Stirred media mills have proved to be more energy-efficient than the conventional ball milling for fine grinding applications. The mill performance is governed by a number of operating variables including mill stirrer speed, feed particle size, solids content and slurry rheology. A study was conducted to assess effects of mill speed, media size and density, and slurry density on the Stress Intensity (SI) in a VXPmill and thereby the relationship to mill performance. For the mill speeds tested, it was found that the optimum tip speed is 7 m/s. If the speed is too high (12 m/s) energy losses result due to mechanical friction losses and heat generation. If the speed is too low (3 m/s), the kinetic energy is not sufficient to promote breakage. The size reduction ratio increases with the increase in mill speed and the decrease in solids content especially in the coarse fraction particle sizes. The effect of slurry rheology on mill performance was shown by assessing the effects of increasing solids concentration and decreasing particle size. Rheological effects seemed to interact with mill speed such that the mill was less energy-efficient at higher solids content and at higher mill speeds particularly for grinding to fine particle sizes. "1. INTRODUCTIONMy talk today will discuss a new development in the thickening of slurries and clarification of waste water - the Enviro-Clear thickener. Several industrial installations of the thickener have been made in North America in the following applications:1.,water clarification in sugar beet processing plants.2.,separation of pregnant liquors from solid wastes following acid leaching in uranium mills3.,clarification of waste water from coal treatment plants as described in a paper in the June 1975 transactions of the SME entitled ""Application and Utilization of the Enviro Clear Thickener in a U.S. Steel Coal Preparation Plant"" by A.A. Terchnik, D.T. King and J.S. Anderson.2. HISTORYThe application of the Enviro-Clear thickener can be traced back to the filing of U.S. Patent 3523889 in 1970 by the inventor F. Eis. The claims of this patent are shown in Slide 1.The new concept was developed for sugar beet processing by the Spreckels Division of Amstar Corporation, and several such thickeners have subsequently been installed in various sugar beet plants. The Enviro-Clear Co. or New York took over the world-wide manufacturing and marketing of the thickener. Experience in the sugar beet industry indicated that the Enviro-Clear thickener volume requirements could be reduced to as low as one tenth that of a conventional type thickener. Various coal samples were supplied by U.S. Steel Research Laboratories for testing. The tests indicated that feed rate loadings of 3 gpm/ft.2 could be obtained by the Enviro-Clear thickener. Such results led to several industrial applications in the coal industry. Subsequently other branches of the mineral processing industry have come to learn of the possibilities of using this thickener. The environmental control program at Cassiar Mine is an active one involving government, unions and company personnel all working together to achieve a goal- "A clean and safe working environment". This can only be achieved by utilizing three of Cassiar's most important resources; i.e., people, time and money. Past environmental programs have more than proved that the goal can be reached and. with the future programs now in progress. Cassiar Asbestos will achieve its environmental goals.

This paper presents an ongoing study on the use of borehole breakouts to estimate in situ stresses at depth in a Canadian underground mine. Breakouts were identified using an acoustic televiewer (ATV) probe. Rock samples were tested in a laboratory to determine their failure curve. Breakout analyses were performed using a 2D failure criterion and a multiaxial failure criterion. Analyses were carried out using both short-term (peak) and long-term strengths (the latter considered here as being represented by the damage initiation threshold DIT). The analyses have shown that the use of the longterm strength and a multiaxial failure criterion leads to results that are more consistent with stress measurements performed in the field, in the vicinity of the mine.

Introduction Development of oil and gas is still centred in the Province of Alberta, much as it was when C. C. Ross read a paper on this subject three years ago at the Annual General Meeting in Montreal; but so far as gas is concerned, its early production in Saskatchewan seems now assured. The three years that have elapsed since Mr. Ross' paper have witnessed a growth in the world's production of oil that has created a potential supply out of all proportion to the demand for petroleum products, and one that has resisted the most energetic efforts of the industry entirely to control. The natural result has been very much to retard the active prospecting of new structures in the Prairie Provinces with any immediate view to oil production, although the same factor has not hindered the search for gas to the same extent. One consequence has been to divert the attention of organized oil operators from wildcat drilling to more detailed geological investigation than had hitherto been customary, sometimes accompanied by test drilling with a view to the elucidation of geological structure rather than to the immediate development of production which at the present is not needed. Nevertheless, in spite of the growth of this phase of oil prospecting - which the writer would be the last not to welcome as a very real blessing and of far greater value than indiscriminate wildcat drilling in either the complex structures of the foothills or the simpler but largely concealed formations of the plains- it is most satisfactory to have to record that in these three years the growth of production both of naphtha and the heavier crude-oil has kept pace with the by no means inconsiderable growth in the production and utilization of natural gas.

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. "In spite of the applications of DEM models to emulate the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and strengths of isotropic rock in laboratory scale, extensions to anisotropic rock and larger engineering scale still have many challenges to overcome such as robust verification and validation against observed field case. In this study, a discrete element modeling was performed in order to represent a transversely isotropic rock such as shale, and the upscaled model was applied to foundation and borehole problems using PFC2D. The applicability of the upscaled rock mass model was verified by an analytical solution. The DEM modeling of stress redistribution induced by an applied surface line load compares well with Boussinesq’s isotropic solution and anisotropic solution given by Bray. The borehole model with a circular opening under biaxial stress was compared with both isotropic and anisotropic solutions resulting in good agreement. The abilities of DEM model to investigate the micromechanisms accounting for complex macroscopic behaviors and to predict the macroscopic behavior are discussed.The results demonstrate that DEM modeling has the potential to be applied to anisotropic rock mechanics problems on larger engineering scales such as wellbore stability problems especially in shale formations. Furthermore, the effect of anisotropy modeled through this study may be able to explain failure behavior of anisotropic rock encountered frequently in real cases.INTRODUCTIONAnisotropy is prevalent in various types of rocks, especially in shale that contain a set of parallel bedding planes. These weak planes in various forms are sources of large deformation and low shear strength and contribute significantly to the anisotropic behavior of rocks (Amadei, 1996; Cho et al., 2012; Kim et al., 2012). As elastic and strength behavior of anisotropic rock is substantially different from that of isotropic rock, proper consideration of anisotropy is of great importance. There is extensive of experimental evidence showing the anisotropy of shale. Niandou et al. (Niandou et al., 1997) analyzed the plastic deformation and failure mechanisms of Tournemire shale were highly dependent on the orientation of bedding planes. Cho et al. (Cho et al., 2012) presented various deformations and strengths of Boryeong shale obtained from laboratory experiments. Fjaer and Nes (Fjaer and Nes, 2013) performed uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength tests using Mancos shale, and they observed that the shear sliding along the planes of weakness before the occurrence of a major failure can reduce the strength of anisotropic rock. The recent research has demonstrated that the anisotropy of rock is an important consideration in rock engineering."

Sustainable development in the mining and metallurgical industrial sectors can be implemented by two distinct groups: 1. The managers and operators of existing facilities ? working with industrial processes and systems that have been operating for many years, in some cases several decades 2. Those who are engineering and building new facilities or upgrades of existing plants. The focus of this paper is to look at approaches and tools available to bring sustainable development thinking and action to these two distinct areas. The paper will discuss: 1. The concept of working with existing facilities and processes to minimize waste and maximize product from a regional raw material/resource consumption perspective using By-product Synergy. The BPS concept has been carried out in Texas (TXI-Chaparral?s STAR Example), in Calgary, Alberta with Suncor assistance, in Montreal, Quebec with Noranda as project leader and currently in Ontario with Dofasco as industry champion. Successful outcomes are presented. 2. A new approach to designing greenfield facilities or upgrades to existing plants using a sustainable development review process. Undertaking the review early in every project can institutionalize the concept of discussing and implementing waste elimination, design for environment, eco-efficiency, risk minimization and community awareness and involvement in the future capital stock. The review process has been developed as an excellent tool for measuring and reporting on a corporation?s sustainable development progress. Examples of how this approach has been adopted in the mining and metallurgical industry, and the resultant outcomes are given.

"The storage of petroleum products on surface is associated with difficulties and limitations. Accordingly, a viable alternative is to excavate underground space in rock and provide a safe way for oil storage. Soft rocks such as salt domes provide good conditions from environmental and operational points of view. The potential for high-volume storage and low permeability are encouraging aspects for oil storage in salt domes. The complicated shape of oil storage caverns, the complicated behavior of salt rocks, and boundary conditions associated with large underground openings are important challenges in the design of oil storage caverns. The aim of this paper is to delve into the stability and deformation mechanisms of storage caverns created in salt domes. A parametric study of effect of the cavern size, orientation, and depth is carried out as a function of ground stress regime. The stress field and deformation mechanisms are calculated for each case aiming at providing design guideline.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most popular soft rock that is used for underground oil storage is salt rock (halite). Salt rock has particular characteristics which makes it suitable for oil storage. Salt rock has several advantages for oil storage, these are: high production rate, high degree of availability, short filling period, high level of safety and low permeability [1]. The low permeability is due to the fact that halite deforms in a plastic manner over a wide range of pressures, temperatures and rates of deformations. This property prevents joints or gaps opening up in the formation, thus preventing the escape of liquids and gases. The state of stresses around the cavern in salt domes depends on the depth of the cavern (initial stresses and rock mass temperatures are increasing with depth), the in-situ stress state within the rock mass, and the internal oil pressure in the cavern. Furthermore, the salt creep behavior and the cavern geometry are influencing stress redistributions during loading and unloading phases.Rock mass structure, cavern geometry, material behavior and cavern operation patterns require complex physical models to describe the load-bearing behavior of the geomechanical structure. The determination of stress, strain and deformation in the rock mass due to cavern construction and operation are complex problems which can be evaluated employing numerical tools such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) or Finite Difference Method (FDM). In this study, the finite difference method was used to evaluate the behavior of oil storage cavern in salt rock."

The cobalt production of the Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited was supplemented, from May, 1962, to June, 1964, by processing 3,500 tons of a calcined cobalt-nickel concentrate. This paper describes the reduction roast -aqueous sulphuric acid leach process and the operating practices employed in recovering cobalt, nickel and copper from this oxidized by-product of a lead-copper operation. Incorporated in this paper is a description of how this process was integrated with the existing ammonia leach -hydrogen reduction process for the recovery of nickel and with the soluble cobaltic ammine process for the recovery of cobalt. Introduction T HE Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has recently completed ten years of operation utilizing the ammonia leach process for the recovery of nickel, cobalt and copper from sulphide concentrates, matte and other materials amenable to this process. A continuing development program, along with the expansion of certain facilities, has enabled the refinery to attain a production rate of 31, 000,-000 pounds of nickel per year by hydrogen reduction. This represents an increase of approximately 85 per cent over the original design capacity of the plant.

It is just over 100 years since the practice of blowing small bubbles into a mixture of ground ore and water revolutionized the mining industry, resulting in uneconomic deposits becoming highlyprofitable mines, along with the inevitable lawsuits over this new technology called froth flotation. To this day, the viability of many mining projects rests largely with the ability of flotation to effectively capture the valuable minerals and reject wastes. Remarkably, bubble behaviour in flotation has not been well understood until very recently with the advent of new sensor technologies that can be brought directly into the operating plants. This presentation will review the importance to the mining industry of understanding bubbles, highlight these new technologies and illustrate, with examples, how paying attention to your bubbles will pay off.

The Mining Association of Canada launched the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004. TSM’s goal is to improve the mining industry’s performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. The initiative currently includes performance indicators for four areas: tailings management, energy use and greenhouse gas management, external outreach and corporate crisis management planning. Over the past year, the association has been designing a performance assessment and verification system for these performance areas, as its members prepare to move to external verification of their performance in 2006. The presentation will describe the initiative and its evolution, as well as the challenges faced in developing a verification system applicable to an entire sector.

Experiments with some selected Nova Scotia coals and a single sample of American anthracite, reconstituted in granular form with lower sulphur and ash contents by spherical agglomeration methods, are described. The effect of different bridging liquids, grinding times, gangue depressents and modes of agitation on the final product are discussed. The application of agglomeration techniques as a means of drying wet coal fines is also noted.

"One of the main problems encountered in employing sublevel caving is the inherent high dilution factor. The operating results at Granduc illustrate that this dilution can be closely controlled and satisfactory recoveries achieved, in base metal ores grading less than 2.0% copper equivalent, by using an assay grade control system based on the fundamental draw characteristics. The history of draw control procedures employed since the start of operations provides an effective comparison between this system and one based mainly on tonnage. The transverse and longitudinal sublevel caving mining methods are described and it is shown how improvements in design layout, operating practice and draw control in narrow complex ore zones (12-foot minimum width) have raised the operating performance of the longitudinal system to a satisfactory level."

"GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."
