"It has been clarified that the Al-5%Mg alloys containing 200 mass ppm of sodium showed grain boundary (GB) fracture, even when tested at room temperature, as well as at high temperatures (~500°C). SEM/EDX study revealed that the GB fracture was associated with the segregation of sodium on grain boundaries of the Al-Mg base alloys. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the GB fracture at room temperature of Al-Mg alloys was caused by sodium segregation in the solid state. It was also shown that the tendency of the GB fracture strongly depended on the heat treatment; the alloys after the solution heat treatment showed severe GB fracture compared with the alloys after the homogenizing treatment. Moreover, it was shown that the GB fracture at room temperature by sodium segregation was suppressed by the addition of bismuth or indium. The suppression of the GB fracture by the additional elements was believed to be the scavenging effects by forming the sodium bearing compounds in grains.INTRODUCTIONIt is widely known that Al-Mg base alloys containing high amount of magnesium(~5 mass%)show better workability at room temperature, while that the alloys show grain boundary (GB) embrittlement at higher temperatures ranging from 200 to 500°C, depending on grain size(Otsuka, 1984), sodium impurity level(Ransley, 1959, Okada, 1997, Horikawa, 2001)and testing strain rate(Yamada, 2012). In the case of coarse-grained Al-5%Mg alloys (~300 ?m), 2 mass ppm of sodium causes severe GB fracture around 300°C, however, the Al-5%Mg-2ppm alloy does not show GB fracture at room temperature. It has also been shown that the GB embrittlement caused by 2ppm of sodium was suppressed by the additional elements, such as bismuth (Talbot, 1995), antimony (Ueda, 1997) and indium (Horikawa, 2012). Basedon these facts, we have concluded that the GB embrittlement at higher temperatures of Al-Mg alloys is attributed to the synergy effects of GB segregation of atomic sodium and GB sliding. For the GB embrittlement mechanism of Al-Mg alloys, involvement of low melting point metallic phases has been pointed out (Lynch, 2002),since the GB embrittlement appeared only at high temperatures. Up to date, the effects of high amount of sodium addition more than 2 ppm on GB fracture were not fully investigated in Al-Mg alloys. In the present study, the effect of 100 ppm ordered sodium impurity on GB fracture of Al-5%Mg alloys was examined, together with the effect of another additional elements."

Abstract A brief history of the electric arc furnace process of steel-making is given. The greater relative importance of this method of steel manufacture to the Canadian steel industry, as compared with its importance in the steel industry of the United States, is shown. The scope of the process is outlined and brief mention is made of the difficulty of obtaining melting stock low in alloy content. The physical chemistry of steel-making is discussed at length in simple terms, with emphasis on oxidation, de-oxidation, and the role of hydrogen. Carbide-type and silicon-type slags are described and the particular usefulness of each is outlined. The importance of various factors in the melting practice is evaluated on the basis of practical experience. Introduction Although electric furnace steels constitute only a small portion of the total weight of steel used in industrial operations, their importance is relatively much greater than is indicated by comparative tonnage figures. Tool steels, which are vital to all industry, are made almost exclusively by the basic electric arc furnace process, as are stainless steels, valve steels, and the higher alloy types of the class usually referred to as "alloy steels'. For many applications where steel other than electric furnace quality is often used, and when first cost is secondary to performance in service, the extra steel cost of electric furnace quality material is usually returned with interest by consistently longer service life. The electric furnace is pre-eminent in the quality alloy steel field because of the control that may be exercised over conditions of oxidation, de-oxidation, and temperature, the fundamental operations in steel making.

Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54' North, longitude 158" 17' West; and latitude 23" 42' North, longitude 163° 45' West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

IN this paper we shall examine the Why, Where and How concerning the agglomeration of iron ores and concentrates. Fig. l answers the questions @f why there is so much interest at the present time in the art of agglomeration. The use of sinter or pellets in the blast furnace has materially increased their rated •capacity. ':'President Hains Company Ltd. Engineering J. S. McMahon ( 1) reports an increase from 653 tons of .pig iron per day to 1140 tons of pig iron per day with the use of a 100 per cent sinter burden on one of his blast furnaces. In the United States the use of 100 per cent pellets has increased pig iron production from approximately 1800 tons per day to over 3000 tons pig iron per day (2). Cylindrical samples of pure titanium were subjected to uniaxial compression at room temperature, leading to the formation of three generations of twins. Many primary contraction twins were observed as the initial texture was favourable for their formation. Numerous secondary extension twins formed within the primary contraction twins and some tertiary contraction twins within the secondary extension twins. The orientations of these three generations of twins were determined by electron backscatter diffraction techniques and their associated Schmid factors (SFs) were calculated. The formation of the twin variants selected in each generation and the absence of certain potential variants are accounted for by rotating the twinning displacement gradient tensor expressed in the twin system reference frame into the crystallographic reference frame of the relevant neighbouring grain. The presence of the observed primary, secondary and tertiary twins is explained in terms of the ease of imposing the required accommodation strains on the neighbouring grains. By contrast, certain first, second and third generation potential high SF twins were absent because their formation would have required accommodation by the most difficult deformation mode: pyramidal glide.

"Fording Coal Limited is one of Canada's largest producers of metallurgical coal for the export market. Medium- to highvolatile coals are mined at its Fording River operations in southeastern British Columbia. This paper discusses some of the mine design and production related problems encountered, and how they have been resolved. Other aspects of the operation such as geography, geology and standard mining methods employed are also covered.IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia<1>. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 19,635 hectares of coal lands, having an estimated resource of 3.5 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal. Total reserves are approximately 520 million tonnes.Fording Coal is owned 600Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises Limited and 400Jo by Cominco Limited. Cominco itself is owned approximately 540Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees. The head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located in British Columbia, approximately 70 km north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/ British Columbia boundary, only 150 km by air and 320 km by road from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45. 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal over fifteen years, commencing in 1972, at an annual rate of 3 .05 million tonnes per year. The mine is presently expanding annual production capacity from the original 3.0 million long tons (3.05 million tonnes) to in excess of 5.0 million tonnes.Concurrent with this production expansion, a vigorous marketing effort has diversified Fording's customers to include additional countries in the Pacific Rim area. Three cleaned coal products are now marketed compared to the single ""standard blend"" product originally shipped to satisfy the Japanese contract. The product specifications are listed in Table I."

Abstract This paper deals with the application of the cyanide process to recover gold from a pyrite concentrate produced by means of differential flotation. This concentrate before cyanidation contains from 0.09 oz. to 0.14 oz. gold per ton, of which only about 60 per cent is recoverable. The rest is so fine that it remains interlocked in the pyrite and therefore is not acted on by the cyanide. The concentrate also contains about 15 per cent pyrrhotite and 0.4 per cent chalcopyrite, both of which are cyanicides. The cyanicidal effect of the pyrrhotite is inhibited by preacracing the pulp with lime, and maintaining a high lime alkalinity during cyanidation. The effect of the chalcopyrice is reduced as far as possible by removing those particles which are free by means of a further flotation step immediately prior to cyanidation. This involves the flotation of some very fine material. After nullifying as far as possible these two cyanicides, the concentrate is cyanided directly, i.e., without being roasted. This leaves the pyrite available for subsequent sale as a source of sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, and the entire residue of the cyamde plant, amounting to about 500 tons per day, 1s now being disposed of in this way. Prior to deciding on direct cyanidation, a number of laboratory roasting tests were made. These showed chat, 1f proper control were exercised, a better recovery of gold could be effected from the roasted product than by the direct method of treatment. The tests also showed that the capital cost o the plant would be much higher than that needed for the procedure adopted. The possibility of subsequently selling the pyrite for its sulphur content would also have been eliminated. Introduction A previous paper has described in considerable detail the application of the flotation process to improve gold recovery from Noranda&apos;s milling ore, and in so doing has covered the production of an auriferous pyrite concentrate. The present paper deals with the recovery of gold by cyanidation from that concentrate. This gold, though intimately associated with the pyrite, can, for metallurgical purposes, be considered as all occuring in the native state.

INTRODUCTION THE property of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited lies between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships, district of Patricia, Ontario. It is about six miles south west of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road. All orebodies found to date at the property are silicified lenticular bodies which lie within tuff beds. The ore bas a specific gravity of 2.95. It consists of mica and chlorite schist, silicified and containing a considerable amount of disseminated carbonate, and mineralized with pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Of these, pyrite, in coarse to fine disseminated grains, is by far the most abundant. Pyrrhotite occurs in ?the gangue material as medium to fine disseminated grains. A very small amount of arsenopyrite, in small crystals, is associated with the pyrite, and small grains of chalcopyrite occur in both gangue and pyrite. Although some of the gold present in the ore is quite coarse, a good deal of it is extremely fine.

The hard roof in underground coal mines is generally considered as a main cause that induces disasters in working faces and entries, such as rock burst and windblast. Hydraulic fracturing technology is an effective approach to weaken hard roof to reduce ground pressure and control rock burst. The state and achievements associated with hydraulic fracturing technology applied in Chinese coal mines are summarized in this paper. Theories related to hydraulic fracturing are of the essence in fracture design to determine the fracture initiation and propagation pressure and predict the geometry and the characteristics of hydraulically induced fractures. Initially, theory of elasticity was employed to determine the breakdown pressure for a vertical borehole where the rock medium is assumed to be elastic. However, porosity and pore fluid have an influence on the borehole breakdown pressure, and then the poroelasticity theory was applied. Arbitrary deviated boreholes in practice are rather common and the maximum tensile stress criterion was employed to determine borehole breakdown pressure. The effect of natural crack in the rock medium on the initiation pressure has been taken into consideration through fracture mechanics. Meanwhile, considerable achievements have been made on hydraulic fracturing tools and equipment, and a set of mature hydraulic fracturing technologies for hard roof control are available. Some comprehensive investigations on the hydraulic fracturing for hard roof weakening are presented, and successful field applications in the Jincheng and Luan coal mining districts are introduced. Finally, the unsolved problems related to hydraulic fracturing are also put forward.

"The integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) aims to provide life cycle management decisions for military platforms and their propulsion systems with reduced life cycle cost and increased operational readiness and safety. Among all the issues of IVHM, understanding the physics of failure and predicting lifetimes of the critical components are at the core: the decision makers have to know when and how components may fail in order to plan ahead. The difficulties to tackle failure problems lie in determining the material response to cyclic and dwell loading in a hot and/or corrosive environment, which all combined to induce multiple deformation and damage mechanisms, resulting in mix-mode failures. Decisions on component replacement (material substitution) and mission planning must be based on quantitative knowledge of the failure physics to mitigating the risk. This paper addresses the critical failure issues including creep, low cycle fatigue (LCF), thermomechanical fatigue (TMF); and presents a mechanism-based approach to life prediction. The mechanism-based approach, by its physics, is widely applicable over the entire operational spectrum of both structures and engines, and therefore is suitable for IVHM purposes."

A SHORTAGE of cement in the Prairie Provinces, together with an aggressive policy on the part of the Saskatchewan Government in bringing new industries to the province, combined to create a favourable set of conditions for the establishment of Saskatchewan's first cement plant on the outskirts of Regina. Built by Saskatchewan Cement Corporation Limited, this single-kiln plant, tl1e latest addition to cement producers on the Prairies, began operations in the Fall of 1956. Location of the plant followed the trend of building cement manufacturing facilities in market areas rather than at raw material sources. In 1957, all assets of the Corporation were taken over by Inland Cement Company Limited and the plant and quarry now operate as Saskatchewan Cement Company, an Inland division. The Regina plant's production makes up approximately eleven per cent of the productive capacity of all plants in the Prairie Provinces. At present, two types of cement are manufactured -normal portland and sulphate resisting.

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

"Proper shale characterization is crucial in shale gas drilling, exploration, completion and production. Unlike porous sandstone and carbonate reservoirs, the challenge with shales comes from their micro- to nano-darcy permeability ranges and the anisotropy of their mechanical and hydraulic properties. Most porosity-dependent logs are not sensitive enough to capture the true behavior of shales. Consequently, mineralogy and other strength and stiffness-related properties must be determined to characterize magnitudes and variances in shale mechanical and flow properties. In addition, these properties must pass quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) practices to give confidence in their use in subsequent log calibrations, during geomechanical modeling, or in fracture design models. This paper presents a technique to integrate shale properties that are measured by various methods, and a methodology to perform QA/QC on the data before application.Shale properties originate from various sources, including downhole and laboratory measurements. Physical samples for laboratory testing are usually limited to a few depths. Lab tests are often costly, and replicating in-situ conditions can be difficult or impossible. In addition, results frequently show wide scatter, reflecting inherent depth variability and lateral heterogeneity. Wireline logs provide nearcontinuous data, but rarely yield direct measurements of rock strength properties. Although geomechanical and fracture models use log data, calibrating it with reliable and previously verified lab-measured properties is important. This paper presents a process to perform QA/QC on lab-measured data using various crossplots.Ten mechanical, microstructural and physical properties are graphically displayed to visually characterize shale strength behavior in ambient and in-situ conditions, whether measured or modeled statically or dynamically. These properties are often sourced from different departments. The properties are integrated but are individually subject to the previously mentioned uncertainties. Pairs of property values are crossplotted and compared with correlations from the literature or previously established with qualified data from related formations. Conformance with these correlations gives confidence in the data, whereas outliers are flagged as questionable. Repeating the process with questionable data crossplotted against other parameters for the same depth highlights the property with the greatest uncertainty. The determination of its value is investigated to locate the source of the inconsistency and establish a more reliable value. Where this is not possible, the user has a rational basis for rejecting that property value."

Many underground mining operations use Split Set friction stabilizer bolts for rock support. Currently, however, little has been done to quantify the effects of various rock mechanics and operational parameters on the capacity of frictional support systems. The strength of Split Sets is usually measured by means of a pull test wherein a jacking force is applied to the bolt and a slip load is obtained. In order to evolve a rational design procedure for this type of support, an extensive database of over 900 pull test results from more than 50 mines through- out North America has been assembled and analyzed. Associated relevant rock mechanics parameters (rock type and quality) and operational details (drilling method, bit size, drive time, time to pull test) were also obtained, as completely as possible, for each test. Analysis of the information has yielded several charts that relate pull-out strength to relevant parameters and simple statistical analyses were conducted where necessary. Quantified distributions for pull-out strength were also produced for several operating conditions. The factors that most significantly affect bolt strength have been identified and specific applications to design are discussed. The information presented will assist mining engineers in designing safer and more economic support using Split Sets.

"The Rietveld numerical method was used to calculate the relative abundances of phases in both synthetic binary mixtures and synthetic and natural ores, using X-ray diffraction data. The results were compared with those of image analysis and a chemical method. The ranges of the relative errors were estimated. The Rietveld method is found to be acceptable for determining the abundances of major and minor phases and the amorphous component of partially crystalline samples. In complex mixtures, where there are several trace phases (~<2 wt%) present, the technique becomes less accurate. It is most useful as an alternative technique to image analysis when sample preparation is problematic or sample particle sizes are sub-micron. It is a manual method which requires user input during the fitting process, but is both simpler and faster than image analysis due to the reduced set up time and sample preparation required. It is now implemented at CANMET as a technique for quantitative analysis.INTRODUCTIONUntil recently, the Applied Mineralogy group at CANMET used only image analysis and chemical techniques to determine phase quantities. An effort to develop quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been on-going for several years. Initially, the reference intensity ratio (RIR) method with external standards was tried with some success (Szymanski and Petruk, 1989). The main difficulty with this technique was finding adequate standard material for each phase present in the sample. This shortcoming made the method ultimately impractical, given the wide variety of materials which come to the laboratory for analysis.The Rietveld refinement method of quantitative XRD (Hill et al 1993, Mumme et al 1996), in contrast, requires no standards and requires minimal sample preparation and therefore a more rapid turnaround compared to image analysis. The Rietveld method also has advantages over image analysis in that it can identify and quantify polymorphs, ultra fine materials and many types of hydroxide products. As well, it is useful for analyzing materials such as bauxite or talc, which do not polish well enough for making mounts of the quality required for image analysis. To quantify amorphous material and phases which are present in amounts below the detection limit of XRD, the addition of a standard material is still required. However, in such cases only one standard is needed, which is alumina."

"AngloAmerican used the extractant M5640 at Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde and uses PT5050MD at Los Bronces Division, which are aldoxime and modifier blends. In the first case, the modifier is the esther TXIB, while in the second case is the tridecanol TDA. It is a well-known fact that the extractant degrades while the modifier does not and with time the oxime/modifier ratio can change significantly, depending on the operating conditions of each plant.In order to evaluate the effect of this varying modifier content in the plant organic, especially in the organic losses, a complete metallurgical test work program was conducted at laboratory and pilot plant scale by Flomin SNF, a new extractant supplier. Results showed that the addition of an aldoxime without the modifier did not affect the chemical performance of the extractant, but there was a significant decrease in the viscosity and density of the organic.Based on the results obtained in the metallurgical program, it was decided to run plant scale tests at the SX plants of Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. In these tests, instead of adding extractant to maintain the organic inventory, CuPROMEX 3406 which is an unmodified aldoxime was added until the original oxime/modifier ratio was reached. This was obtained after 6 months of operation and since then both plants are running with the extractant CuPROMEX 3302 both supplied by Flomin SNF.In the case of Los Bronces, the pilot plant work was completed and it is programmed to run similar plant scale tests. In this case, the oxime/modifier ratio increased and TDA will be added until reaching the original ratio.The plant results obtained at Mantoverde and Mantos Blancos, together with the pilot plant test results obtained at Los Bronces, are discussed in this paper."

"Techniques were developed to determine the oxygen demand of sulphide ore pulps in the laboratory and in concentrators. The effect of variables which influence oxygen demand was studied, and it is shown that the oxygen demand is a measure of the degree of oxidation of the sulphide surfaces. It is suggested that in investigating the significance of oxygen in flotation, the oxygen demand of the pulp is a more suitable parameter than the dissolved oxygen content.Oxygen demand measurements are being carried out with a view to determining the effect of aeration on mill metallurgy and devising improved methods of predicting aeration requirements of sulphide ores.The importance of pulp oxidation in the flotation of massive sulphide ores has long been recognized. At the Noranda concentrator, chalcopyrite could not be floated satisfactorily without a pre-flotation aeration step because the necessary dissolved oxygen was consumed by the large amount of pyrrhotite in the ore. With aeration, pyrrhotite and pyrite were depressed by surface •oxidization, and the resulting thiosulphate level in solution gave a good indication of the end of useful aeration. 1'he present study was prompted by the need to find an alternative criterion for cases where recycled mill water may contain a relatively high concentration of thiosulphate. Preliminary experiments suggested that the rate of oxygen uptake by the pulp -its oxygen demand -might be a practical measure of the end point of aeration as well as a significant parameter in the flotation of massive sulphide ores.Although it has long been realized that oxygen is an important variable in flotation, analytical difficulties precluded detailed plant investigations. Measurements of' dissolved oxygen in mill pulps were first reported by Ralston(i) in 1929. A titration method was used, and because of the delay occasioned by the preparation of clear solution samples, the values obtained were believed to be low. It was quite evident, however, that pulps in the grinding circuit had a lower oxygen content than in flotation. More recently, Woodcock(2,3) used a polarographic probe to carry out oxygen surveys in six Australian concentrators and he generally observed a similar pattern. A large number of other solution parameters were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, reducing power, and reagent and metal concentrations, with the aim of detecting correlations among the measured variables. "In the past, smelting and refining of the precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. This is not surprising when one considers that the manpower, space and capital components of a gold refinery at an operating mine can be several orders of magnitude smaller than other unit operations at the same location. This philosophy is changing however, as economic and environmental pressure are forcing a re-evaluation of all aspects of gold mining and milling.This paper describes and evaluates three furnace technologies available and used by precious metal operators. The operation of arc, induction, and reverberatory furnaces are discussed and their strengths and weaknesses with respect to capital cost, impurity removal, slag quality, and environmental concerns highlighted.INTRODUCTIONIn the past, smelting and refining of precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. Generally, gold producers will spend a great deal of effort to squeeze the last drop of efficiency out of a leach or grinding circuit via simulation or testwork but will design and build the refinery based upon past practices or industry standards. That past practices or industry standards will provide a functional refinery is undisputed; that this philosophy achieves the efficiencies that are possible or demanded in other plant operations is debatable.Environmental and worker hygiene requirements are considerations as well. Pollution control equipment can become a substantial contributor to both the capital and operating costs of a refinery and furnace selection has a marked influence upon the type and cost of this equipment. Slag characteristics and subsequent processing options available also play a role in furnace selection as precious metal slag losses and the recovery effort can greatly influence the cost / benefit analysis of a particular technology."
