"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

"The recovery of lead from battery paste has been investigated for a long time and with the use of many different electrolytes. A number of processes have been presented, but none of them reached even the demonstration step. Engitec has developed a new concept for the battery paste electrowinning using a chloride electrolyte fed through a very innovative flow cell. The process has passed the lab and the demo scale and it is ready to be introduced on the market. In this paper, a description of the process will be provided.INTRODUCTIONThe need for improved energy storage systems as well as the introduction of commercially viable electric vehicles is providing a strong compulsion toward the research of new batteries. The lead battery is playing an important role because it is inexpensive, reliable and it is the most recycled material. This last aspect marks the lead acid battery as quite peculiar making it both the primary lead based product and the main raw material for lead production.In the last years the legislative pressure has become very strong and has forced the lead production to react through the introduction of important process innovations and market changes. The dispersive products, such as additives for paints and for fuel as well as bullets, have been practically banned all over the world while the battery market continues to grow. The lead acid battery remains the cheapest and most integrated energy storage system available and is improving to meet the new technical challenges. This is testified by the news coming from the development of new and more efficient lead acid batteries which are confirming their leading position.Unfortunately, the image of lead is very negative in the public opinion and some important actions are required to try changing this sentiment. Among them, better information to the market and users and the introduction of new and cleaner technologies in the production of lead can help."

"This paper reviews the history, occurrence, properties, and uses of indium, and describes the commercial production and fabrication of that metal by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), at Trail, B.C'. Indium is produced commercially at Trail from dross retreatment furnace D.R.F.) slag, a complex by-product of the lead smelting operations. Furnace feed prepared from this slag is smelted with coke and limerock in an electric furnace. The e1ectric furnace bullion is parted electrolytically, producing a market-able lead-tin alloy containing about 8 per cent tin, and leaving the indium in the anode slime. Recovery of indium from the anode slime involves roasting the slime with sulphuric acid, followed by leaching with water, purifying the leach solution, recovering the indium by sponging with zinc or aluminum, and re-fining electrolytically. This process yields standard grade (99.97+ per cent) indium which is either sold or refined •to high purity ( 99.999 per cent) indium for special uses requiring higher purity metal."

"Recently, significant efforts to improve productivity from the tight intervals of the Mulichinco Formation within the Sierra Chata Field in the Neuquén Basin have been ongoing. Because conventional high quality reservoirs were being developed in this field, a proper reservoir understanding and completion approach was applied. After developing these high permeability reservoirs, the operator began evaluating the tight intervals and new areas within the field, but a completely different approach was necessary to achieve motivating production improvement.An extensive study to help enhance reservoir understanding and identify key factors controlling productivity of these tight intervals (which tend to be in the range of 5 µD) has been ongoing. Some of the issues discussed in this study are 1) petrophysical review, 2) rock properties calibration, 3) geomechanics understanding, 4) faulting and micro faulting/lineaments description, 5) stimulation and completions review and, 6) understanding key production drivers.As in many other tight reservoir projects, a considerable area of the reservoir must be effectively stimulated during the hydraulic fracturing process to achieve economic productivity. Two critical issues hinder these objectives. First, the low permeability in addition to a pore pressure close to or even lower than hydrostatic are critical characteristics when attempting to flow back the well and clean up fractures. Second, very high horizontal stress anisotropy resulting from a strike slip stress regime promotes the generation of simple planar bi-wing fractures. It is well-known that this fracture geometry will contact much less reservoir area compared to more complex fractures, as the operator would normally intend to create at very low permeability reservoirs.This paper discusses these issues and how they were addressed. A pilot drilling and completion program was initiated during 2012 to validate this study. Key factors include well location relative to formation unconformities, their orientation relative to the far field principal stresses, hydraulic fractures generated, and overall completion design."

"1.0 SYNOPSISThe Colomac property, located 137 miles by air northwest of Yellowknife in Canada's NWT. will recover gold from 10,000 tons per day of open pit ore.The decision to proceed with the project was based on a mineable ore reserve of 16 million tons (including dilution) averaging 0.064 oz/ton. After an in-fill drilling program in the latter half of 1988, Colomac's mineable, proven and probable ore reserves were increased to 28 million tons averaging 0.056 oz/ton of gold.A feasibility study completed by Wright Engineers for Neptune Resources in December 1987 examined the possibility of vat leaching followed by C.l.P. and electrowinning. A second feasibility study completed by Wright in February 1988 demonstrated that a conventional agitated leach circuit using a finer grind justified the higher capital cost of this process. This study was accepted and formed the basis of the project authorization.Preliminary engineering commenced in April 1988 and detailed engineering was started in September of that year with the objective of a mine/mill start-up by early 1990.The short time period available to meet the project deadline was additionally challenging, as site access is either by plane year round, and winter road from early February to late March. Normal lead times for equipment design, specifications, quotations and bid analyses were not possible, if the winter road time-slot was to be met."

3-D virtual reality (VR) visualization has opened new opportunities for complex 3D (x, y, z), 4D (x, y, z, t) or even nD data interpretation. The integration of common earth models (3D geologic data), mine models (3D excavations and stress), extraction models (1D time sequencing or mine sequencing) and nD monitoring data (e.g., seismic event parameters) into a common mining process model provides a platform for experts in various fields to better design, evaluate, monitor and modify mine plans throughout a mine?s life; from feasibility, through operation, to closure. Viewing seismic data in a stereoscopic VR environment within a mining process model offers data interpretation processes previously unavailable at lower dimensionality. MIRARCO has developed data analysis and viewing processes specifically designed to enhance microseismic and seismic data interpretation in a collaborative, immersive VR environment; bringing mine personnel and expert consultants together to evaluate data and make strategic decisions for cost effective and safe mining. Seismic events cause immediate hazards (rockbursts) and microseismicity causes gradual hazards through its cumulative effect in rockmass degradation. The focus of this paper is on understanding seismicity from a mine safety and mine planning perspective; in particular, how seismic migration patterns relate to the rockmass response to mining. The benefits of innovation in seismic data interpretation are significant, e.g., for hazardous work area identification, allowing better formulation of re-entry policies and workforce allocation planning, as well as allocation of effective support systems to strategic areas of elevated risk. Better understanding of the overall response of a mine to extraction also facilitates mine planning and design, assisting in reducing production costs and thus in enhancing profitability.

On the basis of a recent visit to mining research centres in a number of European countries, the author describes their organization and their role in the mining industries of these countries. Some observations are made on Canadian mining research efforts, with a view to indicating a more systematic basis of procedure."

The Red Dog sediment-hosted zinc-lead deposit is located in the Brooks Range thrust belt in northwest Alaska, approximately 1000 km northwest of Anchorage. The mine constitutes the primary deposit in a 400 square kilometre district, which hosts several other mineral occurrences. All the known mineralisation is hosted by the Mississippian Ikalukrok Member, deep basinal shale of the Kuna Formation, part of a Devonian to Cretaceous sedimentary sequence. The rocks underwent intense deformation during the Brookian Orogeny in Middle Cretaceous time. Several thrust faults juxtapose the stratigraphy. The Red Dog mine is composed of four deposits which together contain 105 Mt in resources and reserves for a total resource exceeding 18 Mt of Zn metal. The mine is an open pit with 25 foot high benches. The biggest challenge is not the Arctic conditions, but metal extraction, due to the fine grained nature of the mineralisation and the variability of the ore. The mine produces Zn and Pb-Ag concentrates that are shipped to smelters around the world from the Red Dog port facilities during the short summer period. Ore mineralogy is generally simple and consists of sphalerite, pyrite, galena and marcasite. The deposits are generally overlain by decametre thick exhalative barite horizons and exhibit strong silicification, which locally obliterates the original textures. Although described as a world class Sedex-type deposit, a large portion of the mineralisation exhibits sub-surface replacement textures. Moreover, unlike most other Sedex deposits, the reconstruction of the basin is made difficult by the structural complexity of the district. To assist exploration in the district, several assumptions are made regarding the deposit settings relative to metal source, growth faults or crustal extension.

A matrix analysis of the differences between the camps and communities associated with the Britannia Mine is used to develop an analytical tool. The tool is intended to assist the mining industry as it embraces the many facets of sustainable development. A case study is used to support the identification of key factors that may predict the sustainability of a new mine town. Sustainable communities, like Britannia Beach, are discussed in the context of three pillars of sustainability: value of mining products to society; creating wealth; and, environmental integrity. A sustainable mine town may be viewed as a socio-economic asset as well as an asset to the mining industry.

"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. WE associate metals with hardness, toughness, and strength. But a curious paradox lies at the root of the valuable mechanical proper-ties of the metallic state: in order to be strong, a metal must be weak. This paradox, and the equally surprising fact that, in a sense, metals are not true solids at all, are among the topics here discussed by Sir Lawrence Bragg. (1) WHAT METALS MEAN TO US We employ various materials to build or fabricate the many objects we use in everyday life, choosing those whose properties are most suitable for the purpose which the object has to serve. Certain of these materials have been used from the earliest times, such as stone, wood, leather, and animal or vegetable fibres, each with its own peculiar valuable properties. Stone resists crushing and is very durable and permanent, as indeed it must be, since it has so long resisted change as a part of-the earth&apos;s crust. It is there-fore ideal for walls and buildings, and very early in his history man discovered how to make artificial stones by burning clay, with the advantage that they could be given any desired shape, and made into bricks or given elaborate forms as pottery. Wood is strong and tough and light, it resists tension as well as compression, and is nor brittle like stone. It forms beams and furniture and parts of tools or weapons. Leather is tough but at the same time iris flexible; it is ideal as straps or sheers. Vegetable fibres such as linen or cotton, and animal fibres such as wool and silk, owe their value to their flexibility and strength in resisting extension. They can be spun into yarn or rope, and woven into cloth. The technological age in which we are now living is replacing the natural products used by early man by a series of artificial products, but it is remarkable to see how in nearly every case we are copying Nature&apos;s materials. The wide use of concrete represents a developed art of making artificial stone. Artificial fibres such as rayon or ?nylon replace cotton, wool, and flax. Plastics are coming very much to the fore; they correspond to early man&apos;s use of horn, another substance with peculiar properties of roughness in all directions without the &apos;grain&apos; of wood. For the most part we are following in the footsteps of our remote ancestors, though we can make for ourselves what they had to cull from wood and field. There are exceptions; for instance, we have discovered comparatively recently the number of uses to which natural rubber can be put, and are now making it artificially. This is a really new discovery; our ancestors had nothing with such remarkable powers of elastic stretching without breaking, and resistance to being abraded.

"Various methods of leaching are being used by Denison Mines Ltd. Uranium Operations. This study was designed to investigate the flood leaching operation of two parallel inter-connected stopes contained by pressure bulkheads. The teaching muck piles, created from large scale uppers production blasts, are aerated by compressed air lines laid beneath the pile prior to blasting.A SFr, tracer gas, injection technique has been employed to determine the post-blast integrity of the single-ended air distribution system. SF6 was injected into the compressed air line feed to the stopes and collected at borehole exhausts from the stopes in grab-sampling bags. Analyses of the air samples were performed with a gas chromatograph.The system was designed to give a sufficiency of oxygen to sustain bacterial activities used to enhance the leaching recovery in the muck piles. The results obtained indicated that there is a minor anomaly in the distribution system that may not be critical to the operation. Compared to an idealized case, the over-all efficiency of aeration throughout the muck is estimated at over 85%."

Its involvement is fully integrated and range s from mineral exploration through mining, smelting, refining and by-product production to international marketing. It also embraces related services, including trade, wharfarge and power. With head office in Vancouver, it is involved, directly or through subsidiary or associated companies, in Canada and in the United States, Greenland, Europe, Australia, India and Japan.Cominco has over 12,000 employees and 26,000 shareholders, with 91% of all shares held in Canada.Cominco&apos;s Inventory Control System is one of the most extensively used computer systems employed by the company. Also, inventory control is regarded as one of the most economically successful computer applications to be undertaken by the Data Processing Services (D.P.S) Group that was responsible for the development of the Inventory Control System.The main use of automatic inventory control has been at operating plants in Western Canada and the Northwest Territories, which are separated by large distances. Each location has equipment-intensive mining and processing operations and it is essential to maintain control of parts and supplies inventories. Some of these locations are remote from urban and industrial centres and it is important to avoid the adverse effects of high personnel costs and re-training due to turnover."

DURING the past year, the writer has investigated the treatment of a variety of British Columbia tungsten-bearing ores. Much of the test-work described in this paper was carried out in collaboration with Mr. A. G. Lyle in association with the British Columbia War Metals Research Board at the University of British Columbia. The remainder was completed in the laboratories of the Department of Mines at Victoria. Two mills in the Province are at present treating tungsten ores. Descriptions of these are included through the co-operation of Messrs. S. Gray (1) and A. A. Almstrom (2). MINERALOGY, OCCURRENCE, AND SPECIFICATIONS In the present paper, attention is directed solely to scheclite, inasmuch as known occurrences of other tungstcn minerals in British Columbia are of mineralogical interest only. "Repeated 3D terrestrial digital photogrammetric surveys were conducted on hard rock mine pillars to characterize damage during secondary mining. Damage was quantified by measuring Depth of Failure, DOF, from spalling material and crack intensity, D21. These damage values were then correlated to visually assessed Pillar Damage Ratings and numerically estimated pillar loads. Measured damage, particularly Depth of Failure, correlated well with Pillar Damage Ratings. Numerical predicted pillar stress vs. damage exhibited the expected trend with shorter pillars being stronger. High resolution photographs and 3D models were also used to characterize damage mechanisms, which were found to be structurally constrained. INTRODUCTIONThe Doe Run companies Southeast Missouri Operations consists of six room and pillar lead mines (Brushy Creek, No. 29, Casteel, Buick, Fletcher and, Sweetwater) (The Doe Run Company, 2014). The mines are hosted in the Carbonates and Shales of the Viburnum trend with mining depths varying from 180 to 300 m. Pillars are commonly cut square with widths varying from 7 to 9 m and heights generally between 5 and 18 m, resulting in extraction ratios between 80 and 85% (Roberts et al., 1999). Figure 1 presents an idealized stratigraphic section through the Viburnum trend and Figure 2 shows a plan view of the five areas spanning the three mines included in this study."

"A common problem in the mining industry involves the overloading of established conveyor systems. This overloading can have a number of causes, such as new production technology or a changing market condition which increases demand. An overloaded system usually spells disaster and leads to clean-up problems, equipment failures and lost production. The Cape Breton Development Corporation&apos;s Lingan Mine had a serious overloading situation on its underground coal clearance system, and equipment was being damaged and production was being lost. It was rectified, in part, by increasing the coal clearance capacity through the use of booster conveyors. This paper discusses the problems which led to this situation, the booster concept and the installation of the first unit at the Lingan Mine.IntroductionThe Lingan Mine is a submarine coal mining operation with an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes from three advancing longwalls. Coal is conveyed 3400m up a 13% slope to the surface. Designed and installed in the early 1970s, the system&apos;s 820-tonne/hour design initially proved adequate; however, by the late 1970sthe system was handling surge loads of 1640 tonnes per hour due to the introduction of new face equipment.The coal clearance system consisted of three 485-Kw, two 210-Kw and one 105-Kw conveyors. Each conveyor was designed for 820 tonnes per hour using 1050-mm, Type 10 belt with a 35-degree troughing profile.There were many effects of the overloading on the system:• Loading beyond the physical capacity of the belt resulted in spillage along the conveyor, which increased operational and maintenance costs.• Overloading of the drive components resulted in premature equipment failures.• Spillage at the drive pulley often resulted in damage to the belt and pulley lagging and, under extreme conditions, the conveyor would require partial unloading before it would operate. This was a particular problem under wet conditions because the 485-Kw conveyor drives were fitted with single-drive drums."

Few persons ever stop to consider how vital an influence minerals, and especially metals, have had upon human history, how they have affected the every-day life of the individual or how at different periods they have altered the course of nations and determined their progress. Students and writers of history have dealt very fully with political history and have given us a great deal of detail about the careers and policies of kings, parliaments and nations, but frequently have not touched the economic causes that have been the real forces influencing the development and carrying out of these policies. So far as minerals are concerned there is no single work from which one can get a concise and consecutive account of the growth in the use of minerals, nor of the diverse ways in which the. geographical distribution, the .search for, the development and the use of mineral resources have affected human progress from the beginning of man&apos;s history. The reason for this is quite plain, and when one takes a little time to think of it he begins to appreciate the magnitude of the job and he will realize that the story of minerals and mineral resources touches a tremendous range of human activity, not only of mining .and metallurgy, but the whole field of agricultural and industrial growth, of exploration and colonization, transportation and commerce, monetary system, commercial policy, in short, almost every phase of economic life.

Crushing has proven to be of fundamental importance in mine mill integration at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). Highland Valley Copper has achieved large throughput and good quality control through the gyratory crushers by proper blast design and better gap control. The next step, in optimizing the mine mill relationship, is evaluating the crusher liner wear and its shape influence on performance and product size reduction. To do this a laser measurement device has been developed and data is being recorded on the concave and mantle liner wear. This paper will outline the work to date and indicate specific objectives of the work.

Abstract Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, nine miles east of the town of Val d&apos;Or in northwestern Quebec, are presently milling, at the rate of 1,000 tons daily, a relatively complex 3.11-phide ore and producing, in decreasing order of value, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and copper. The products are a zinc concentrate, a silver-lead-copper concentrate, and a silver-gold precipitate from cyanidation. Although several independent pre-production metallurgical investigations into the treatment of the ore were carried out, current practice is different from any of the recommended methods and, while still leaving room for improvement, is considerably more effective than earlier performance. Flow-sheet developments from the commencement of operations in 1942 are dealt with briefly, showing the reasons for making numerous changes, the shortcomings of the various schemes tried, and, finally, covering data pertinent to present-day practice. From the recovery standpoint, silver has presented the greatest difficulty. The writer&apos;s association with the Company coincided with the start of production. Characteristics of the Ore The predominant metallic minerals present in the ore, in decreasing order of their abundance, are: pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of argentiferous tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, covellite, bornite, and chalcocite. The sphalerite is mostly light in colour, sometimes colourless, and practically free from combined iron. Some of the sphalerite is very closely associated with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Pyrie is abundantly disseminated as medium to fine grains; more rarely it is massive and contains occasional grains of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite.
