The mining industry faces numerous challenges related to sustainability and circular economy principles, necessitating strategic approaches to innovation and resource management. As demands for mineral resources continue to rise, mining companies are under increasing pressure to address environmental impacts, minimise waste generation, and optimise resource utilisation. These challenges underscore the importance of Research and Development (R&D) roadmaps as strategic tools for guiding innovation and sustainability efforts within the sector (Jochen Berbner, 2022). A design-led methodology offers a structured approach to R&D roadmap development, emphasising stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and alignment with industry objectives. By leveraging design principles, mining companies can ensure that their R&D initiatives are responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Against this backdrop, the project aims to address the pressing challenges associated with sustainability and circular economy in the mining industry. Through the development of R&D roadmaps and the application of a design-led methodology, the project seeks to identify innovative solutions for enhancing resource efficiency, minimising environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable practices within mining operations. This paper highlights the collaborative efforts among Isle, the mining industry, and water utilities, which have yielded tangible benefits. The study demonstrates how the outcomes from the roadmaps outlined below effectively align research with strategic objectives, fostering innovation to address pressing challenges.

The world is becoming an increasingly complex environment to operate within. Adoption and evolution of technology is occurring at a rapid pace and operating spaces are growing in interconnectedness and interdependency. In mining this is evidenced by the large-scale adoption of autonomous machinery, intelligent systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and robotics to realise benefits in optimisation, productivity, and safety. To enable continual delivery and growth in operational performance, and to realise the aforementioned benefits, a new approach for managing mining and metals is required (Mining Review Africa, 2023). This means that an already talent constrained workforce must learn to manage the complexity inherent, evolving, and growing in the environment (Abenov et al, 2023). A key skill that needs to be further developed and deployed to combat these challenges and to enable robust problem solving is that of systems thinking, which is already practiced in pockets within the mining industry. Experience and learning can be leveraged from other industries and their application of systems thinking to ensure that focus is maintained on areas where the benefits from which will be optimised. With targeted application, a workforce capable of effective systems thinking can be the catalyst to optimisation across mining organisations.

The carbon neutrality continues to require reduction of carbon usage in ironmaking and steelmaking processes. Specially, it is expected that the hot metal ratio (HMR) in the steelmaking process should be reduced essentially. Unfortunately, the reduction of the HMR in converter can bring about poor environment for nitrogen removal from molten Fe. From this situation, nitrogen prediction model has been developed to understand the fundamental of behaviour of nitrogen and quantitatively interpret its content changes in the converter process. Thermodynamic and kinetic approaches were improved based on existing mathematical model and attempted to predict nitrogen content in realtime by combining process data. In present study, heat supply from the oxidation (mainly carbon and silicon) and CO evolution in the converter are considered, and scrap melting due to the heat transfer from the molten Fe to the solid scrap charged in the converter also be considered.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. The following powerpoint slides summarise the 2020 Vision û The Manager of the 21st Century û outlining how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. RIG Technologies has developed new technology that can successfully acquire high quality natural gamma ray (GR) and hole deviations, downhole while drilling, on reverse circulation drills. This technology survives the hostile downhole environment with shocks of between 400–2500 g for 7– 10 days at a time. The Logging While Drilling (LWD) service eliminates the need to run in-rod surveys, either by the driller or by wireline trucks and crews. This time saving is in the middle of the drilling process, thus enabling drills to keep drilling and increase their productivity. Additional to the natural GR and directional survey, the downhole tool is equipped with sensors to measure the downhole dynamic response of the drilling system providing insights into rock hardness, density and potentially clay types. These parameters have never been acquired behind the hammer before and coupled with surface measurements from the drills themselves, form a rich data set for trainable machine learning algorithms shortening the time to receive advanced geophysical answer products from sometimes months, to live feeds directly from drills (Hopper, 2019). Alive, high speed, two-way data link between surface data acquisition systems and downhole geophysics tools has been established and incorporates calibrated surface measurements of dynamic forces directly on the drill string to match up with those measured downhole. Receiving live streams of natural GR and hole deviation surveys as the drill is drilling allows true remote decisionmaking with live data available anywhere in the world. The combined data from surface and downhole dynamics builds a data set that could begin to enable true optimisation of autonomous drilling processes.

Improving liquid blending operations in production plants is of paramount importance in many industries like mining, oils, petrochemicals and food. For accurate blending of different types of process streams, like homogeneous, heterogeneous, cold or hot streams, it is essential that the composition can be accurately monitored in real time. Advances in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technology offers the possibility to apply XRF for online elemental analysis. In this paper we discuss an online EDXRF analyser for accurate blending control in many industries.EDXRF has the advantage that multiple elements can be measured simultaneously over a wide concentration range of wt per cent down to a few mg/kg, for elements between sodium (Na) and americium (Am) in the periodic table. To reach the desired accuracy and precision in an online XRF analyser, it is important to bring a representative and homogeneous sample of the process flow into the optical path of the analyser. The combination of a laminar flow cell design and advanced EDXRF technology leads to low detection limits and high performance. The obtained precision and accuracy allows for much tighter process control. The use of saline water for mineral beneficiation in arid regions is general practice and also the case with Exxaro Namakwa Sands, situated on the west coast of South Africa. Although it is ‘cost effective’ to use sea water for mineral beneficiation, downstream process separation efficiencies may be negatively affected. This is more specific to surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic and high tension (HT) separation. If minimal fresh water is available then, proper washing is often neglected. Salt crystals can form on particle surfaces during the drying process before electrostatic separation.This paper describes a study that has been conducted to determine the effect of upfront salt water processing on downstream electrostatic/HT separation. The study indicated that minor quantities of salt can cause the separation efficiency to decrease substantially.

Wiluna Mining Corporation are progressively re-entering the old Wiluna underground mining complex. The existing underground was abandoned in 2013 by previous owners and left to flood with water levels reaching above the East Pit portal and Happy Jack Pit portal and up to 300 m below surface in the Bulletin underground. Re-entering the mine commenced in 2017 with dewatering of the Bulletin decline. The underground development had been previously supported with friction bolts, with weld mesh in places. Until mid-2021 rehabilitation requirements were based on an external visual inspection of the installed ground support scheme. However, several incidents involving falls of ground due to corroded bolts have occurred during this time, showing that this approach was inadequate. The challenge the operation faced was should the entire decline be rehabilitated, the implication being not only a large rehabilitation cost but also the impact of severe delays to the mining schedule. The question was asked can the operation better understand the level of corrosion damage and potentially optimise rehabilitation requirements. A proposal to use a systematic approach to assess corrosion by environmental condition mapping, visual external corrosion assessment, and internal corrosion assessment via borehole camera inspections was provided and accepted by Wiluna Mining Corporation. The objective of this work was to produce a three-dimensional map showing the degree of corrosion on the reinforcement systems in the capital infrastructure, this would then be used to risk assess and prioritise rehabilitation requirements. This paper summarises the approach, methodology and results that provided the Wiluna mine planning team with information to enable planning of resources and budget to justify priorities of rehabilitation.

Based on the blasting crater theory, the equation between k under typical cases and burden line, charge height was obtained by open pit bench blasting analysis model. The model was calculated with mine production blasting. "Since the adoption of open-door policy 30 years ago, rapid economic growth has resulted in serious resource depletion and environmental destruction, especially in mining areas. As an urgent response to this situation, the central government and the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) have adjusted policies with concrete and realistic actions for halting this trend of non-sustainable mining activities in China. æGreen Mine CampaignÆ is one of the actions implemented. In 2010, MLR announced the æGreen Mine CampaignÆ, in which existing and new mines will be evaluated against the æGreen Mine Construction StandardsÆ and certified as æGreen MineÆ if complying with these standards. The standards cover five key aspects: the considerations of science-supported resource exploitation efficient resource utilisation standardised management environmental friendliness harmonious community relationship.Every year, MLR reviews ægreen minesÆ from all provinces. Thirty seven mines, including coal, metal, non-metal, gold, chemical industry and building materials mines, passed the review and were certified as green mines in 2010. In 2011, 187 out of 194 mines that participated in the review were certified as ægreen minesÆ. In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Therefore, the value of various ore block boundaries can be better analysed by objective assessment of ore loss and dilution for a given minimum mining selectivity (selective mining unit or SMU), even in narrow lodes.A case study of a narrow vein gold deposit, comparing the results from an OK model and a CS model shows that whilst both models show similar trends – waste, low-grade, and high-grade regions are the same in both cases – the simulation model can provide greater insight for optimal definition of the mineralisation boundary.CITATION:Haylett, M E, Weeks, A, Matthews, G D and Khosrowshahi, S, 2014. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Middle Palaeozoic Gurvansaikhan Belt (Southern Mongolia) of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is one of Central Asia’s most significant emerging porphyry copper provinces. The belt has become the focus of extensive exploration for porphyry copper-gold deposits over the last decade following the discovery of the giant Oyu Tolgoi porphyry copper-gold deposit. The Gurvansaikhan Belt is known to host porphyry deposits of Late Devonian (~370 Ma) and Early Carboniferous (~320 Ma) age. The characteristics of Early Carboniferous porphyry systems are poorly known compared to their older counterparts, despite their probable abundance and potential economic significance. Exploration within the Kharmagtai porphyry breccia complex has identified multiple cogenetic gold-copper-porphyry centres and late-stage mineralised magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias emplacement within a composite high-K calc-alkaline quartz monzodiorite intrusive complex. Early porphyry alteration and mineralisation at Kharmagtai are zoned around vertically attenuated early- and inter-mineral quartz monzodiorite dykes and stocks and comprises a complex sequence of calc-potassic, potassic and propylitic assemblages. Hematite dusting is a common alteration product that gives intrusions and the host rocks a distinctive pink-orange colour. Several of the systems have bornite-rich cores, where mineralisation is characterised by high gold grades (0.7 to >5 g/t Au) that zone outward to chalcopyrite-rich and then outer pyritic halos. Early stockwork mineralisation is overprinted by magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias. High-grade magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias form part of a major copper-gold mineralised breccia system with significant exploration potential. The Early Carboniferous porphyry copper-gold systems of the Gurvansaikhan Belt represent a substantial exploration challenge in an area of increasing exploration maturity. In a variety of methods, building an aground-underground seamlessly integrated model, and then analysing the formation and development mechanism of mining disaster based on this model is a useful way. In this paper, we studied an aground-underground seamlessly Integrated modelling method, and correspondingly given an aground-underground seamlessly integrated 3D spatial model, CSG+CD-TIN+GTP-TTS, by which we can carry out analysis of surface subsidence and underground laneway distortion efficiently, finally preliminary applications verified the effectiveness of this method.

The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. Orica Mining Services (Orica) in partnership with Coal and Allied’s Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has developed a risk management process to maximise mining efficiency whilst controlling vibration and maintaining critical electricity continuity to New South Wales (NSW) electricity grid in the Riverview Pit. The issue is a high tension tower which supplies electricity located within 40 m of mining and blasting activities. The process involved developing an understanding of the relationship between vibration, explosives, geology and the location of the blasting in the geological horizon. From this an optimum methodology for blasting in each region was developed.

Dugald River Mine (DRM) is located approximately 85 km north-east of Mount Isa, and 65 km northwest of Cloncurry, in the north-west Queensland Minerals Province of Australia. DRM is an underground operation and includes an above ground processing area, a 200 ha tailings facility, two waste rock dumps and associated infrastructure. The mining method is conventional underground longhole open stoping and downhole benching of a lead/zinc deposit within a black slate environment. The deposit is estimated to contain ~53 Mt of zinc and lead, which will be mined over a 30-year period. During operations, waste rock is segregated into either Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) or Non-Acid Forming (NAF) based primarily on the sulfide concentration of the rock. In particular, the NAF waste rock is an asset and is used for various small construction projects during operation; however, its primary use is for rehabilitation work at closure. Since beginning operations in 2017, DRM has generated more NAF than was originally anticipated. Whilst this is an excellent asset to DRM, it did pose a logistical problem of where to store the additional NAF for the life-of-mine and how to manage the run-off. DRM experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot conditions and periods of rainfall between November to April, and relatively dry and mild conditions between May to October. Majority of rainfall is received between January and February with an annual average rainfall of 501.1 mm. Short and intense rainfall events are common. DRM’s above ground infrastructure is land-locked between two large ephemeral watercourses, making the significant expansion of any assets challenging from a permitting/regulation and cost perspective. MMG is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and is committed to adapting to a changing climate through operations and closure. Following extensive studies DRM opted to store the additional NAF material into the adjoining NAF Dam and concurrently upgrade a previously minor sediment basin into a highly engineered sediment basin which relies on automatic flocculant dosing to meet the required discharge quality limits. This basin is climate-resilient in that the dosing system can be adjusted to counter high intensity extended rainfall events which produce highly variable inflow water quality. This abstract broadly describes how DRM designed and implemented an engineering innovation to enable the site to meet the changing climatic challenges. The abstract then describes the process to design the sediment basin and how the dosing rate was established and validated. Finally, the abstract comments on the effectiveness of the sediment basin and how it has revolutionised DRM’s approach to water treatment and management; all whilst minimising the disturbance footprint of the operation

Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. Steady depletion of the world’s primary copper reserves coupled with a meteoric rise in electronic waste (e-waste) generation has led to secondary copper processing assuming an ever-increasing importance within the global copper industry. Treatment of secondary copper feeds at existing smelting operations has traditionally been performed in the Blast furnace, Peirce-Smith converter and/or anode furnace. In the past decade or more, bath smelting technologies have been preferred for the processing of these materials due to their superior environmental performance and flexibility to operate under a wide range of conditions. This paper focuses on the pyrometallurgical processing of copper secondaries in the Outotec Ausmelt TSL Furnace and some of the unique issues facing secondary copper smelters and downstream gas handling/cleaning equipment.

This paper reports on the implementation of the critical control concept to manage material risks in the mining and metals industries. The critical control management (CCM) approach assumes it is better to identify weaknesses in risk controls before an incident happens as opposed to discovering weaknesses from an investigation after an incident occurs. The first is sometimes referred to as active monitoring and the second as reactive monitoring (Health and Safety Executive and Chemical Industries Association, 2006). Both are needed. However, whilst methods for both active and reactive monitoring of risk controls are well established in many high hazard industries, such as oil and gas, petroleum and chemical industries, until the publication in 2015 of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) guides, (Good Practice Guide and the subsequent Implementation Guide) (ICMM, 2015), there was no specific mining and metals industry guidance on critical control management. This paper reports on progress in implementing the ICMM guidance drawing on two main sources. First, a benchmarking survey of a representative sample of coal and metalliferous mines, both underground and open cut/pit), sponsored jointly by the Queensland Resources Council and the Queensland Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health in the context of a recommendation that the Queensland mining industry adopts high reliability organisation (HRO) principals (Queensland Resources Council and Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health, 2022). Second, it draws on Noetic’s experience of implementing critical control management in mining and other high hazard industries in Australia, Africa, China and North America (Wilkinson, 2018). The paper describes good practices found and where significant improvements can be made, providing specific and actionable examples of both. From this it also identifies how future guidance on this topic could be improved.

With the introduction in recent years of third-generation interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, monitoring of mine slopes, benches and surrounding areas has benefitted from increased accuracy and coverage. Fundamental research into point and distributed scattering techniques has pushed the use of InSAR to provide higher spatial and height resolution. In this paper we discuss the operationalisation of third-generation InSAR techniques and show its application to active mining operations.This paper will discuss the use of multiple independent measurements of ground movement obtained from operationally-derived InSAR products over a wide variety of deformation areas within an active open pit mining operation (ie pit slopes, dewatering depressions, tailings containment and waste dumps). A technique that shortens the time between observations (increased observation frequency) and provides ongoing estimates of measurement accuracy will be described. The methodology exploits available satellite data by using multiple satellites and multiple beams. The paper will also examine factors in the design of a mine survey with third-generation InSAR and illustrate some of the necessary engineering trade-offs to efficiently monitor a mine from space.Overall, this paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities and advantages of operational third-generation InSAR techniques for ground movement monitoring of mining operations and provide a framework for proper design of a mine InSAR survey.CITATION:Henschel, M D, Sato, S, Ahola, R and McParland, M A, 2014.
