"As the cost in time and money of data from sensors and small-scale tests has reduced, additional challenges have arisen. Although many mine data sets are not big relative to those in other disciplines, they are complex in other ways, and becoming too large to manage efficiently on personal computers. In order to take advantage of the opportunity offered by increased data, a diverse team from Universidad de Chile and CSIRO Mineral Resources has developed a virtual geometallurgical laboratory to support the computational requirements linking data acquisition with data-driven business decisions. A particular focus to date has been the development of user-guided workflow ensembles to enable comparison between plausible geometallurgical hypotheses.A case study has been undertaken using publicly available data from the Rocklea Dome iron deposit in Western Australia. A hypothetical mining schedule was produced from geochemical and hyperspectral drill core/chips data via the following steps: data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, geochemical interpolation, block modelling, ultimate open pit design and scheduling. The key outcome of this study was the integration of workflow stages through new plug-in methods or modification of existing software. A clay-capping trial was established in 1996 on Magazine Dump at the Mt Lyell Copper Mine. The trial was initially constructed under the Mount Lyell Remediation Research and Demonstration Program, a co-operative venture between the State and Federal governments. The detailed engineering design for the clay cover included the following features; reshaping and compaction of dump batters, 5 m vertical bench interval, overall side-slopes of 2.5:1, emplacement of clay in four 150 mm lifts, compaction by a 10 t vibrating roller or ætrack rollingÆ on batters with density testing for quality control. A small section at the base of the dump ( The trial also generated certain unexpected findings. Field permeability tests on the cover yielded uncertain results and oxygen remains available throughout the dump. The flow data indicate that, while total outflow has decreased as a result of storm shedding, inputs from groundwater and batter infiltration are still significant. Outflow during the driest weeks of the year may have risen following capping. Detailed assessment of the data is hampered by insufficient pre-capping information; however, there is a possibility that conductivity flux emitted when flows in the receiving environment are at their annual minimum is unchanged or worse post-capping.

Acid mine drainage is a serious and chronic environmental problem of mining. This paper discusses the factors affecting the rate of acid generation by mine rocks and illustrates the relevance of these factors to the mines of the Northern Territory, Australia. The factors may be divided into two groups: internal factors and external factors. The first group covers characteristics of ores, mine waste rocks, tailings, etc and the second group covers surrounding conditions. The latter is further divided into four sub-groups, viz surrounding temperature and pressure, chemical conditions (ferrous/ferric adsorption ratio, total iron concentration, oxygen concentration and pH), surrounding biological conditions and mechanical conditions. Special attention is given to the surrounding P-T conditions, especially water partial pressure, and its relevance to the Northern Territory mines.

Freeport IndonesiaÆs DOZ (Deep Ore Zone) mine is scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining methods and will have a number of major improvements when compared to previous block cave mines in the district. The DOZ will have an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system than in previous underground mines in the district. This paper will describe the mine plan, haulage, and ventilation systems, and compare them to those used in other operations in the district.

This paper presents results of the experiments carried out in Beth Energy No. 33 Mine for the purpose of alleviating problems associated with cutter roof. Cutter roof problems have delayed the advance of the entry development considerably and maintenance cost of these entries was very high due to the requirement of very extensive and heavy artificial supports. The study includes assessment of the problem, investigation of the geology and lithology of the mines, study of in-situ stresses and corrective measures to combat the problem. Two approaches were selected as the corrective measures: 1) implementing yield pillar concept in order to reduce the effects of in-situ horizontal stresses, 2) designing an effective roof reinforcement system and application procedure. Results of this study revealed that roof strata is weak and in-situ stresses are very high at the problem area which results in development of cutter roof. Implementation of yield pillar concept was found to be ineffective because cutter roof often developed at the entry face concurrent to the development. However, proper design and implementation of roof reinforcement system stabilized the roof and eliminated roof caving during both entry development and retreat of longwall face, despite existence of the cutter roof, at a much lower cost.

Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.

Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. Copper has been mined intermittently at Gunpowder, north of Mount Isa, since 1927. Most ventures have had some initial success but fluctuating copper prices, the small-scale of the operations and the remoteness of the site led to closures or sale. Processing routes have included direct sale of high grade ore, flotation of oxide and sulphide concentrate, and copper cement production from mine solutions. Copper cathode has been produced by heap and in-place leaching coupled with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). Aberfoyle Limited recently purchased the Gunpowder operation and is expanding operations. An innovative high recovery tank leaching process, including a low temperature, low pressure autoclave, has been adopted. Copper cathode will be produced from an expanded solvent extraction/electrowinning plant at approximately 45 000 tonnes per year. The combination of expanded throughput and high metal recoveries will make Gunpowder a cost competitive producer.

Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. Inaddition, the -20 micron fractions of the Boggabri (B2t) and Swansea (B8t,> were recovered and the former converted to a sodium clay, in order to assesE; the beneficiation possibilities. Surface lakes or water accumulation present a possible threat for the flooding of the underground mining works. Therefore, the criteria that define the conditions under which no flooding of the mining works can occur are of vital interest to the miners. The authors present the criteria that they developed for the Velenje lignite mine, Yugoslavia, and that take into account the elastoplastic behaviour of the rocks and the natural stresses involved in the deformable strata between the bottom of the lakes and the mine works as well as the extent of the direct caving-in process resulting from longwall mining activity. Fi- nally a generalization of these criteria to the other rock and stress conditions is discussed.

The fundamentals concepts of roof support are similar between coal mining, metal mining and tunnelling and yet there are different design approaches, different hardware, and different levels of site investigation. This should not be the case and this paper discusses the key geotechnical issues that should underlie all roof support design - the need to reinforce defects. A design method to build a beam in laminated rock under high horizontal stresses is presented. The method allows for changing rock strengths, defect properties and varying horizontal stresses. At one level the design can be implemented with design charts and tables. Lessons learnt during the implementation of the designs at 5 different mine sites are Discussed.

This paper describes several sources of external dilution affecting the stope walls during underground sub-level and bench stoping. Factors which control ground behaviour such as the geometry of the openings, the influence of geological discontinuities, stress re-distribution and blasting practices are discussed. Crown stope instability due to stress concentrations induced by changes in the excavation geometry, is discussed and the most efficient ways to sequence blasting within a stope are analysed. Effects of undercutting by blasting, blast damage in the near field and cut-off slot blast designs are analysed. The influence of dynamic loading on the exposed walls as well as the practice of blasting fill passes within stope crowns are discussed.

Beach sands on the Morobe coast of New Guinea contain significant amounts of chromite. This chromite, together with the more abundant associated minerals such as olivine, enstatite, tremolite, antigorite and feldspar has been de- rived from rocks of the Papuan Ultramafic Belt and transported to the beaches by three rivers, the Paiawa, the Saia and the Sesimbai. Of the hundreds of samples taken, 26 have been analysed mineralogically and chemically in some detail. On this basis, five groups of samples, four on- shore and one offshore, representing character- istic mineral assemblages, have been recognized. The chromite grains themselves have been exam- ined to determine variations in amount and in the Cr/Fe ratio, since this is of economic importance. Much of the chromite fails to reach a high Cr/Fe ratio as a result of magnetite rims around chromite grains. The precious metal content of the sands is negligible.

For more than 15 years after the Northparkes orebodies were first discovered in 1976, the project was delayed by the need to find an economic way of mining the low-grade E26 deposit. The decision to use a low-cost block caving method to mine the orebody was made in the early-1990s; but the project's future did not solidify until 1993 when a radical new approach was adopted which sought to integrate business imperatives with technology and organisation strategies. The approach led to the establishment of a strategic vision which tied together all the components that could have a major impact on the project, to provide a framework for guiding strategic choices. The strategic vision strived to break away from the old rules of how mines are organised and operated; and involved finding imaginative new ways to radically redesign mining processes to achieve quantum leaps in performance.

The mobility of radionuclides released into aquatic, terrestrial and subsurface environments by mining, industrial processes is an area that deserves significant scientific attention. The presence of microorganisms in these environments can influence the transport of radionuclides. Free-living microorganisms constitute mobile suspended particles that may have a radionuclide sorbing capacity higher than that of the environment. Radionuclide transport will then proceed faster with than without microorganisms. In contrast, if the majority of the microorganisms are growing in biofilms on surfaces, transport of radionuclides may be reduced. Microorganisms can directly sorb radionuclides either within the cell structure or on the cell wall. Radionuclides could also be sorbed by minerals precipitated by microorganisms. Microorganisms produce complexing agents that can influence radionuclide mobility. The involvement of microorganisms in biogeochemical processes is related to their ability to include various chemical elements and their combinations into biochemical redox reactions. Microorganisms can alter the extent of radionuclide oxidation that results in their deposition as a result of the formation of insoluble forms. Some studies have shown the bioremediative potential of stimulating reducing bacteria to use some of the soluble radionuclides as electron acceptors and thus precipitate them out of solution. The microbial involvement in providing a barrier for radioactive element migration (uranium, technetium) and the formation of ores (eg uranium) has been justified. The mediated impact of microbial activity on radionuclide migration occurs through its effect on the ambient geochemistry by geochemical speciation changes, pH changes and changes to the ambient redox potential. As the mobility of many radionuclides depends on the pH and redox potential of the environment, these microbially mediated geochemical changes can influence radionuclide migration through changes to both the dominant radionuclide species and mineral phases.

Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

Fragmentation is the basic concern in rock blasting and serves as the main measure of blasting effectiveness. A good estimation of fragment size distribution before blasting is very useful and helpful for selecting the proper equipment for loading, transporting, and crushing rocks. A fragmentation model is presented that is based on a hole by hole analysis and correlates the rock properties, burden, spacing, and explosive column with the blasted volume and fragmentation obtained. The drill bench is divided into three separate areas corresponding to different breakage mechanisms. They are: 1) a main breakage or casting area, 2) a secondary breaking area, and 3) an overbreak area. The boundary of the main breakage area is found from the magnitudes of strains in the stress waves and the tensile strength of the rock. The secondary breaking area is determined by stress wave reflections at discontinuities and interactions between colliding stress waves from adjacent boreholes. The overbreak area is that beyond the main breakage area "where the reflected tensile waves no longer break the rock. This analysis is applied on a hole by hole basis to locate the breaking points. Then connecting the breaking points on each side of a borehole forms the triangle of the main breakage area. This is repeated for the next hole and the remaining area is the secondary breakage area. After the angle and area for each hole are found the Kuz-Ram model is used to predict the fragmentation size distribution for each hole. Then summing up the size distribution for each hole gives the total fragmentation distribution. This analysis has been successfully applied to field tests performed in a limestone bench where the entire spoil pile was screened to determine the fragment size distribution. Knowing the explosive and rock properties the breaking area was found for each hole, the strain and stress values, the breaking point, and angle of breakage (104 degrees). The fragmentation size distribution was then calculated and compared to the field data with excellent agreement.

Blasting is an essential component of most mining operations, and is used to reduce the rock mass to a workable size distribution, as well as to create stable openings and pit walls. Frequently, there is little difference between the designs of blasts to achieve these two functions, though more advanced operations have developed different designs for these very different functions. To assist in the appreciation of how blasting practices can impact on the stability of rock openings and pit excavations, this paper reviews the role of high pressure explosion gases on final block stability. It is assumed that the stability of all surface and underground excavations are, to a greater or lesser extent, controlled by the interaction between discrete rock blocks. Typically, these blocks will be defined by either natural, or excavation induced, jointing.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.
