The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. Paradoxically, the increased emphasis on water treatment in mining has generated a new problem û hypersaline brines. Currently brines are either disposed of into ash systems, lined evaporation ponds or hazardous waste sites. Evaporative crystallisation (EC) is an alternative, but the energy requirements can be prohibitive and the salt product is still a waste that must be disposed of. Eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) is an alternative technology that is capable of separating aqueous solutions into pure water (as ice) and pure, solidified solutes. It is highly energy efficient and does not depend on the introduction of any solvents. In addition, the simultaneous production of pure ice and potentially saleable pure salt(s) is a major advantage. Although EFC has been shown to be effective in separating a single salt and water, it is still in the early stages of being applied to the multi-component hypersaline brines that are typical of reverse osmosis retentates generated by mining and extractive metallurgy.This paper presents an EFC brine treatment protocol developed by the Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The protocol incorporates brine analysis, thermodynamic modelling to establish which salts will freeze out and at which temperatures, followed by experimental studies to determine the kinetic parameters, such as nucleation temperatures, salt yields and crystal purity.Case studies showing the application of EFC for the purification of typical brines containing high levels of sodium, chlorine, sulfate and ammonia (Brine 1) and a mixture of sodium and magnesium sulfate (Brine 2) are covered. Modelling tools were applied to describe the phase behaviour of the multi-component saline systems under different process conditions. Experimental validation was carried out using synthetic brines of different (and increasingly complex) compositions. The results showed that EFC could be used to selectively recover the sodium as a sodium sulfate salt from both different brines. The simulation tools were useful in the analysis and understanding of the process.A preliminary economic analysis showed that the operating costs for EC were approximately nine times those for EFC, but the capital costs were much less- equipment for EC cost about half that of EFC. However, it is important to note that the capital cost calculations for EC are based on a technology that is already well established and with only relatively marginal future equipment cost savings expected. In contrast, EFC is a new technology, with significant future technology improvements expected.

Two years ago I was sitting in a big lecture theatre at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie at the annual New LeadersÆ Conference listening to a guy tell us all how much he loved his job, travelling the country ælegallyÆ blowing stuff up à and getting paid to do it. I would have paid to see and do the things he spoke of à now IÆm that guy. From finishing a mining engineering degree at the University of Ballarat, through the job hunt, to firing environmental blasts in Tassie and designing and implementing construction blasts in the middle of the Gold Coast. My name is Rohan Stevens and IÆm a blast-o-holic. While the æjob huntÆ we all embark on toward the end of our degrees is a stressful time, itÆs also very exciting in the current climate. There are a number of things I have learnt through both my hunt for the job that best suited me and working for the worldÆs largest explosives manufacturer. The petrology and age of mid Cretaceous to Palaeogene marine volcanics may provide important clues to the palaeogeography of the period, particularly for tectonic elements and events outboard of the Papuan Basin. This initial survey of known marine volcanics of this age reveals a paucity of reliable data on isotopic ages, geochemistry and syngenetic mineralisation on virtually all units. Existing data allows a tentative subdivision of known marine volcanics into either MORB-like early Palaeogene rifts/ marginal basins, early Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks overlying ?Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene fore-arc/marginal basin crust, late Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks, and mid to Late Cretaceous ensialic rift rocks. Due to lack of data, some units are difficult to classify into these categories.

Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

Waitemata Tectonic Event(25 Ma ago) created a subduction system from the northeast of Northland, causing: (1) the emplacement of the Northland Allochthon (24-23 Ma) which provided argillaceous limestone and serpentine to Northland, and minor copper to both there and East Cape (located off Northland then); and (2) Northland volcanism (from 22 Ma), which lacked economic mineralisation. The Kiwitahi Tectonic Event (1714 Ma) caused: (1) a realignment of volcanism - from coastal western Northland, to west of the Hauraki Plains (Kiwitahi); (2) a start to the migration southwards from Northland of (a) the Alpine Fault System towards Marlborough today, (b) subduction towards Cook Strait, and (c) volcanism towards Taranaki-to-Bay of Plenty (initially through Coromandel, Kiwitahi, and offshore west coast); and (3) a start to rhyolitic volcanism & associated hydrothermal activity. The latter caused epithermal mineralisation, providing in Coromandel the best known North Island metalliferous deposits. Andesitic volcanism has been active in both of these two contrasting, subequal belts since 22 Ma. Rhyolitic volcanism and hydrothermal activity was wholly restricted to the eastern Marshall Belt, with an abrupt limit to economic mineralisation at the Volcanic Divide (within Hauraki Plains) and a major change there to basaltic volcanism of the western Searle Belt. The Kaimai Tectonic Event (5-1.5 Ma) caused: (1) a temporary reversal in volcanic migration in the Searle Belt, and a duplication of rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity at Waihi (Marshall Belt); (2) the rotational rifting of both the Central Volcanic Region (by 30¦) and the Hauraki Rift (10¦), causing major curvature of the North Island and New Zealand, and the transfer of the offshore subduction system from Coromandel to East Coast; and (3) an effective end to Coromandel mineralisation. Post-Kaimai Volcanism (1.5-0 Ma) included: (1) andesitic volcanism in the Searle Belt, yielding the western coastal titanomagnetite deposits; and (2) andesitic, and rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity in the Marshall Belt - the latter providing geothermal energy, sulphur, and pumice/perlite deposits. Post-Subduction (Intraplate) Volcanism (10-0 Ma) developed in a steadily expanding northwest region of relative tectonic quiescence, as subduction and its volcanism migrated southwards. Intraplate volcanism was predominantly basaltic, providing excellent aggregate; but less common rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity provided geothermal potential and mercury at Ngawha and at Puhipuhi, and halloysitic clays of extreme brightness elsewhere in Northland. This volcanism has reached as far SE as Mayor Island, providing an early New Zealand mineral resource - obsidian.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330-p.s.i. tension to 3,750 p.s.i. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock mo.odel mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a. borehole oxtensumeter and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a. vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face waa.s advanced the roofmovement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The ma.j ority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a. radioactive isotope and a. scintillation counter in a. pair of parallel bcreholes promises to be sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.

Spectrum Resources commenced operations as a public listed mining company in August, 1983, with a variety of precious metal projects in New Zealand. At that time the outlook for most mineral commodities, with the notable exception of precious metals, was decidedly gloomy. Metal prices were depressed and demand forecasts were universally gloomy. Against this background the company reviewed the non-traditional metals sector to try and identify a 'new' metal with an above average demand growth and market value. Lithium, a commodity with exciting new applications in storage batteries and alloys, met both criteria. Annual world consumption of lithium is around 7000 tonnes; current prices are around $NZ40/lb for lithium metal and demand growth is projected at five to seven per cent per annum. Geothermal fluids at Wairakei and elsewhere contain anomalous amounts of lithium and in May, 1984, the Chemistry Division of DSIR was commissioned to carry out a literature survey on the possible recovery of lithium and other minerals from geothermal waters. The survey results were encouraging and the company subsequently negotiated exclusive access rights, for research purposes, to geothermal discharge fluids from the Wairakei and Kawerau geothermal fluids. Most of the subsequent investigations reported here were carried out by Chemistry Division, DSIR, under contract to the company with some assistance from the Industrial Processing Division, DSIR.

The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

Being a geologist I intend describing the renaissance of the gold industry in Australia within its geologic framework; there is a geological pattern to the numerous gold projects which have been brought on stream over the past decade. We are now about midway through our third and largest gold boom which, at a peak of 7.5 million ounces is about twice the production peaks achieved in the preceding booms. From discovery in 1851 through 1870 we saw the first boom largely based on alluvial production in NSW and in Victoria at the great Ballarat and Bendigo Goldfields. The discovery of the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, underpinned the second gold boom in the period 1895 - 1915. On that basis the present boom should last through the next decade.   It has been a golden decade for Australian gold production. From less than ten mines in 1980 with production over 10 000 ounces and the largest, Telfer, with output of about 130 000 ounces we now find over 130 deposits being worked around the country today that produce over 10 000 ounces with the largest, Boddington, having an output of over 400 000 ounces. In total these mines produced an estimated 210 tonnes of gold in 1989 and we expect this year, 1990, that a new record production of between 240 and 250 tonnes will be set. This positions Australia in third place in the Western World behind South Africa #1 and the USA #2 and fourth in the world with the Russians holding second place overall behind the South Africans.

There are a number of current theories in relation to methane migration and emission into workings following underground coal mining activity and some controversies do exist. Mining causes changes in the stress regimes in surrounding strata and results in fracturing. Permeability increases and methane flows into workings under a pressure gradient. The effects of stress on permeability depend on the physical properties of the coal and surrounding strata. Methane emission also depends on the original methane content and the proportion which will be liberated. There are several methods for determining in situ methane content and desorption characteristics of coal samples and several methane prediction methods but clearly more research is necessary to achieve an adequate predictive model.

Occasionally additives are used in the wet processing of iron ore tailings and slurries, for examples, in the thickening of tailings with flocculant to recover process water, and in the smooth pumping of concentrated slurries. They can mitigate slurry behavioural issues that could significantly affect the plant operation and production. The nature of iron ore business requiring the plant to have a high throughput to be economical, large amounts of slurries are therefore processed every day. The quantity of additives needed will correspondingly be large and so are the associated costs. This could have a significant impact on the plant profitability. If additives are used they must be very costeffective. NaOH is among the lowest cost chemicals available, at ~US$400 per ton. In this paper we will look at use of composite additives involving phosphate compounds with NaOH added to reduce the cost, for the control of iron ore slurries rheology. The NaOH worked synergistically with the phosphate compounds. The effectiveness of these composite additives in viscosity reduction can be neutralised by another cheap additive such as lime or a Ca(II)-based salt turning the slurries back to being a paste. Tailings paste is an ideal material for safe storage in the dam. These composite additives can also be used to facilitate the recovery of iron ore at commercial grade from tailings (Leong, 2020a, 2021a).

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. Escalating electricity costs are one of the biggest operational cost drivers in mining. The trend to use high-powered auxiliary fans delivering increased airflow to meet the dilution requirements of diesel equipment, together with the reliance on ducted systems rather than traditional flow-through systems to ventilate areas, increases the overall energy requirements of ventilation systems. To manage and reduce electricity costs energy management systems can be implemented, inefficient operating units can be replaced and the operation of energy-consuming components of ventilation systems can be optimised.This paper describes the process followed to design and develop an energy-efficient axial flow auxiliary fan. The fan-targeted design was based on static pressure and volume flow rate requirements incorporating higher overall fan efficiencies. A brief overview of the results is given, including the aerodynamic design procedure using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The mechanical design criteria used, including stress analysis on the rotor and designs to improve the vibration levels of the fan, are also presented. Through this study it was demonstrated that the aerodynamically designed rotors using profiled and twisted blades improve the total fan efficiency considerably when compared with some of the older-generation fans using cambered plates. The latter were typical in the mining sector in South Africa at the time of the study where average overall fan efficiencies of standard cambered fans less than 63 per cent and some of the older-generation cast aluminium blades have peak overall fan efficiencies of about 65 per cent. Peak overall fan efficiency of more than 80 per cent was achieved by using the described design and development process. Additional benefits are that the fans are quieter due to the better aerodynamic design and have a longer operating life due to reduced vibration levels.In conclusion, the use of CFD to develop fans to deliver the required volume flow at the required pressure allows quicker design turnaround time. It furthermore allows the ventilation engineer the option to specify a specific fan and is not limited to an off-the-shelf catalogue fan. It thus allows engineers to purchase a fit-for-purpose energy-efficient fan. During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. Work to date has shown that the use of Al2O3:SiO2 ratios is suitable for identifying potential gibbsite bearing samples. Subsequent confirmatory XRD analysis helps to refi ne this initial identification. Based on these methods, gibbsite has been mapped in two common settings:1. along steeply dipping faults, or2. in association with stratigraphic contacts where one unit is aluminous (eg dolerite dyke).On a microscale, the samples studied illustrate an association between haematite, and to a lesser extent goethite, and gibbsite. In these samples the dominant forms of haematite are discrete crystalline phases of either microplaty haematite or euhedral martite. Two dominant forms of gibbsite were observed:1. vein style gibbsite that cross-cuts (or infill’s cracks) in goethite ± martite iron oxide associations, or2. gibbsite intimately intergrown with and forming a matrix to microplaty haematite.Some of the gibbsite microstructures observed suggest that it may have formed during a very hydrous, possibly hypogene, stage of the deposit genesis. The presence of this crystalline gibbsite, and in particular its occasionally euhedral form, suggests that aluminium was at some stage remobilised, at least locally, and then precipitated from solution as gibbsite. These observations suggest that these has been a phase of gibbsite precipitation that may have had a close but complex relationship with regards to the timing of the mineralisation processes, rather than formation as a result of late stage lateritic weathering.

investigations have been undertaken into the flow characteristics of mineral slurries from a number of Australian metallurgical plants including Mount Isa Mines Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and Broken Hill South Ltd. Experimental equipment installed for this work included facilities for continuous recording of flow rate and pressure drop and detection of sedimentation.Although the method has subsequently been described in published literature, it is believed that the investigations included the original application of a method for correlation of the flow rate and pressure drop data. This method depends on solving by graphical methods the values of the constants k, and c in the relationship EQUATION 1 where D is pipe diameter; ?P, pressure drop; L, length; and V, mean linear velocity. Discussion of this correlation also reveals why sedimentation velocity does not necessarily vary greatly with pipe diameter.INTRODUCTIONIn order to design pumps and pipeline installations for a Newtonian fluid, measurements of the fluid's density and viscosity in any of a number of instruments are sufficient. Substitution of these values in well known equations to calculate Reynolds numbers and subsequent correlation to determine friction factors are all that is required for engineering specification.As a result of work during the last decade, particularly that of Metzner and Reed (1955) and Dodge and Metzner (1959), it is now possible to design for homogeneous non-Newtonian fluids using relatively simple instrumental measurements.These methods can sometimes be applied to thick slurries which behave as if homogeneous. Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), techniques have been developed to measure the electrical properties of the various minerals. The measured values will be used to model the behaviour of the various minerals in high-tension roll and electrostatic plate separators. The resistivities of ilmenite, rutile and zircon from a number of Australian producers have been measured by applying a DC voltage across a test sample and measuring the resulting very small current flow. By appropriate design of the measurement cell and attention to the experimental procedure, reproducible resistivity values have been obtained, ranging from 106Ωm for ilmenite to 1013Ωm for zircon. However, the conditions of measurement are radically different from those under which electrical separation takes place. It is not certain that the measured values reflect the resistivities seen under high-tension separation, during which the particles are subject to a high intensity corona field. Consequently, an alternative technique for measurement of resistivity under conditions of corona bombardment has been developed. It is based on the experimental procedure of Castle and Yelle (1979) used to measure the resistivity of fly ash under the conditions occurring in electrostatic precipitators. This paper describes the development of the segmented ground plane measurement surface and a high-voltage switched resistor network which comprises the in situ resistivity apparatus. Results are presented comparing the measurements made under corona bombardment with those made using the DC measurement cell. The equipment has also been used to study the current distribution from a corona wire, as a function of high-tension voltage and wire-to-plane spacing.
