In this, the centennial year of The Institute, it is appropriate that the history of the Institute in New Zealand be recorded. I am indebted to John Dew, compiler of the centenary publication æMining People A Century - Highlights of the First Hundred Years of The AusIMM 1893 - 1993Æ, for many of the early historical references in this paper. In July 1892 the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its annual conference in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, when it was suggested by the delegate from Broken Hill that the time had arrived for the establishment of an Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. Resulting from this meeting at Ballarat, a Provisional Committee was formed at Broken Hill with the object of forming The Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers having the following objectives. To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, the welfare of those employed in those industries by means of meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers with the circulation by means of publications amongst its members and associates the information thus obtained.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.   Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.   If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining) processing and marketing methods.

Uncertainties in large open pit geotechnical modelling has been a major concern for slope stability analysis. The level of confidence in the in-put assumptions, such as structural and rock mass model, dictates the modelling results to some extent. This article is to detail a case study of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) regarding a predicted inter-ramp failure on an as-built pit walls by a 3D numerical modelling. Significant concerns were raised across site and multiple preventive plans were considered. After intense data collection work, it was confirmed that the risk of failure had been overestimated. The case study has improved the understanding of geotechnical data in-put and has enhanced the process of creating and updating geotechnical structural models at KCGM.

The application of cost updating with the aid of cost indices is reviewed with particular regard to the mining industry. Examples of applicable cost index series are included with values given for the last ten years. The compilation of the indices is discussed with consideration given to the possible sources of error inherent in their application to specific mining cost problems.

There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value. Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on. In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

Traditionally comminution optimisation has been focused on energy minimisation, whereas flotation optimisation has been focused on recovery improvement. One of the largest, if not the largest, operating cost over the life of a flotation circuit is electrical energy. With increasing pressure on operators to lower production costs and the cost of energy increasing, reducing the energy consumption of the flotation circuit can be beneficial to site economics. This paper reviews the use of energy by mechanically agitated flotation machines and discusses the measurement and benchmarking of energy consumption in modern flotation concentrators. Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations is located in mineral rich north-west Queensland and is one of the largest sources of copper in the world. This world-class underground operation is planned to produce over 6.6 million tonnes of copper ore in 2007 from the X41 and Enterprise Mines. With an underground mining history of over 50 years and underground reserves of over 83 million tonnes at 2.6 per cent copper, mine planning for the future becomes an exciting challenge for the technical team due to the older nature of certain areas. The 1100 Orebody of the X41 mine was one of the first places that copper mining occurred, with its discovery in 1953 - 1954 and mining commencing in the 1960s. Sublevel open stoping mining methods have been employed since that time as the means of extraction, using a primary-secondary sequence to maximise stope turnaround time. Large Transverse Pillars within the 1100 orebody were not mined out in order to provide access for ventilation, power, orepasses and other services. The Panel Pillar, 4180XC and 4010XC pillars are three such Transverse Pillars in the 1100 orebody that will be mined as a final retreat. This paper discusses the technical challenges and issues associated with the extraction of Q390 stope, one of the stopes located in the Panel Pillar, and the design solutions to overcome these issues. Managing the exposure of backfilled stopes of variable fill strength, ensuring the stability of the crown, stope walls and drawpoints, managing vertical openings, re-establishing service networks, and stope filling are the critical issues given consideration for the final design of Q390 stope and other such stopes within a Transverse Pillar. Communication and coordination between the different departments in the mine are essential for the necessary work to be completed in a timely manner to bring pillar stopes into production.

Silicon-based photovoltaic cells are currently the most dominant types applied to convert solar energy to electricity. In solar-grade silicon (SG-Si), the control of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) is very critical. Generally, these elements are difficult to remove into acceptable sub-ppm levels from lower grade Si. This study investigates slag treatment as a process for Si refining, focusing on the behaviour of P and B. The experiments were conducted by equilibrating Si-B-P alloys with 43 wt per cent SiO2 – 47 wt per cent CaO – 10 wt per cent Al2O3 slag under inert atmosphere at 1500°C. Different crucible materials were used (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO), which determined the primary saturation phase for the system and modified the final slag composition accordingly. The samples were equilibrated and analysed with microanalysis techniques (EPMA (electron probe microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry)). New standards were prepared and applied in the LA-ICP-MS analyses. Experimental results show that silver is essentially fully dissolved in silicon, as well as most phosphorus with LP ( = wt per cent P in slag/wt per cent P in Si) between 0.1–0.3. The distribution coefficient of boron was measured to be between 1 and 2. The crucible material used had an influence on the phase compositions and slight influence on the distribution coefficients of boron and phosphorus. The experimental results provided new accurate data when considering applicability of slag treatment as a technique for Si refining and Si PV cell recycling.

Analysis of Electrostatic Separation for Rutile Cleaning Duty Using a Plate Electrode Assisted High Tension Roll Separator A plate assisted electrostatic high tension roll separator has been used for the removal of impurity mineral grains from a rutile rich product stream. A laboratory study and a subsequent production study explored the effect of machine conditions with a view to the optimisation of the separation performance of the separator. The performance requirement was that the TiO2 grade in the non-conductor stream was to be less than ten per cent whilst at the same time the ZrO2 grade in the conductor stream had to be less than 0.5 per cent at mass recoveries of greater than 90 per cent to the conductor stream and less than 5 per cent to the non-conductor stream. Mineralogy data was utilized to determine the feasibility of achieving the production targets with the feed under study. Since the feed stream mineralogy was dominated by rutile, leucoxene and zircon, it was possible to use an approximation to the actual mineral assemblage as well as the raw X-ray fluorescence data to understand the separation duty of the Carrara machine. Since there were four conflicting criteria used for the performance requirement, an index was devised that incorporated all the requirements simultaneously. This new index was the sum of the squares of the difference between the achieved and desired values, weighted with respect to the variance of each variable. If the desired value for a particular criterion had been met its contribution to the sum was set to zero, no matter how well the criterion had been met. For the production machine the strict requirements were almost achieved. As expected, the achievement of the target performance was dependent of the feed conditions at the time of measurement. This paper reports the results of this study.

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

A computerised cataloguing system for geological specimens is described. The catalogue is designed for use with a compactus-type storage system. The information stored in the catalogue for each specimen includes the type of specimen, locality information in terms of standard ~ap sheets and descriptive location, geological age, stratIgraphy, and specimen descriptions. The catalogue can be interrogated at any level of detail on the basis of any combination of these specimen parameters.Other information stored for each specimen 'is the compactus address, collection date, reference information and the type of analyses performed on that specimen:Any mterrogatlon produces a listing of those specimens which satisfy the search criteria.

Triboelectric Charge and Separation Characteristics of Industrial Minerals The basic principles of triboelectric charge and separation of minerals and the factors affecting the entity of the charges developed on mineral surfaces are discussed and the surface pretreatment methods by which the electrophysical properties and thereby triboelectric charging and separation of minerals can be artificially altered/modified are reviewed. Furthermore, the triboelectricfication theory of materials is envisaged from the chemical concept of acid-base donor-acceptor and an attempt is made to correlate the physical concept of triboelectrification with the donor-acceptor properties. The triboelectric charge characteristics of the quartz, calcite and wollastonite mineral samples for different size classes were defined using different tribocharging medium. Based on the triboelectric charges acquired by mineral samples their energetic work function values are estimated. In addition, the main electrophysical properties, ie dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of different size fractions of the mineral samples are measured and their donor-acceptor chemical properties were defined. A series of triboelectric separation tests were conducted to explore the possibilities for separation these mineral from each others. The results from the triboelectric charge and separation of the single mineral systems showed promising prospect in separating quartz, calcite, and wollastonite from each others. Finally, attempts were made to explore the possibilities to implement triboelectric charge and separation process to real ores. Promising results achieved when separation of calcite from silicate impurity was sought from a carbonate ore. A very high purity (99 per cent) calcite product was obtained at a recovery of 80 per cent. Interesting results were also achieved to concentrate wollastonite from a complex silicate ore containing quartz, different feldspars, wollastonite and other Mg-Fe silicates. In this case conditioning of the ore with salicylic acid at defined temperature and relative humidity was found to be essential to concentrate wollastonite. The outcomes indicate despite the fact that triboelectric charge and separation process has not been completely perceived, it pronounced to be an environmentally friendly and economically viable technique for minerals and wastes beneficiation. Being a dry beneficiation technique the process has special appeal, which must be explored further in particular for treating industrial minerals.

Working in thick coal seams presents many problems, included in these is obtaining the maximum recovery of coal under safe working conditions. In order to obtain maximum extraction it is important to understand the behaviour of pillars left for support purposes. However it is not always the practice to maintain pillar stability it is often required to design for pillar failure. The greatest hazard of pillar mining is uncontrolled pillar collapse. Many major and relatively minor collapses of pillar workings have been recorded in the history of mining. Notable among the collapses was that at Coalbrook Colliery in South Africa in 1960 (Bryan et al 1964). This led to recommendations on the design of bard and pillar workings in South Africa. (Salamon 1967) These design recommendations were based on the statistical analysis of stable and unstable pillar workings and introduced the concept of probability of pillar failure and safety factor. On the basis of this study a safety factor of 1.6 was prescribed for production panels in South Africa. A general review of pillar design procedures, reveals that a new phase of reinterpretation and modification is in progress. This takes into account for instance the effect method of working, whether by conventional drilling and blasting or continuous miner, has on coal pillar strength, and the necessity to review the methods for increasing depth of working. Also, as more is being understood about overall rock mass properties and advanced computer modelling techniques become more readily available, the mine planning engineer is faced with numerous approaches to pillar design.

Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Department of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been beneficial. Mining engineers in Australia are able to plan underground workings where minimum subsidence is allowable and are in a position to foreshadow the surface effects where total pillar extraction is carried out. In certain cases such surface effects can be minimised by structural design in buildings or pipelines.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows that since 2006 the balance of capital costs associated with mine development has become weighted greater than 75 per cent to enabling infrastructure and less than 25 per cent on process plant, equipment and machinery. The well-developed mine planning techniques including pit optimisation and scheduling and process plant design and optimisation have typically proceeded in a linear fashion from geology, mine planning, through processing, with some iterations back to the mine. Only then is attention paid to planning and costing of enabling infrastructure in any detail.Optimisation has typically involved developing cut-off grades, mine plans and schedules and ore processing that produces maximum economic ore. Infrastructure has then been sized æto suitÆ the mining and processing core business drivers.What the ABS data, together with global trends, indicates is that infrastructure can no longer be an afterthought if miners wish to achieve robust project value estimates, realistic ore to market costing and resource statements based on achievable economic cut-off grades.In addition, with such a large proportion of the costs originating from non-mining or processing activities, a mining operation can only be truly optimal if these aspects are given due consideration in the mine design stages, based on quality geometallurgical inputs so that the size and cost of enabling infrastructure is optimised to maximise project value.This paper outlines an iterative holistic approach to mining project development, which integrates the geometallurgical approach and enables infrastructure planning into project design and evaluation. The Mt. Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. The establishment of the world’s first Sub Level Shrinkage (SLS) mine from a tradition Sub Level Open Stoping operation has proven to be a geotechnical challenge which has required tailored solutions to overcome unique issues. This paper will be broken into two distinct sections that will outline: a brief overview of the mining method and how the SLS method was chosen; and how the SLS is managed and key geotechnical learnings. The story of the world’s first SLS originated from the need of a bulk mining method to ensure the viability of Mt. Wright into the future. Traditional bulk mining methods such as; Block or Sublevel Caving were originally ruled out due to the low natural ‘cavability’ of the orebody and the proximity of the orebody to existing major infrastructure (Decline, Ventilation Rises and Egresses). The first section of the paper will outline the key geotechnical information that helped decide the SLS method in addition to how continuous backfill influenced the design. The second section is intended to address issues that the geotechnical engineers encountered since the inception of the SLS. The feature topic of this section is mining induced stress. Like most bulk mining methods, Mt. Wright had success when the production front was running parallel to the stress (production front being ‘shadowed’ from the stress). This was until a design change, forced by a splitting ore body resulted in this shadowing effect becoming harder to achieve. As a result, rehabilitation and production hole re-drilling become a regular occurrence, which teamed with a strict set of access controls made the production cycle longer and harder to complete.
