I. INTRODUCTION AT the time of the discovery of America the old world had a scant supply-of the precious metals. Both the northern and the southern part of the new continent proved wonderfully rich in gold and silver and its treasures were eagerly looted; though the looting has lasted four centuries, the nines of its mountain chains are far from being exhausted. Even the later discoveries in Australasia and eastern Siberia could not rob the Western Hemisphere of its position as the greatest gold and silver producing region of the world, though finally the developments in a narrow and circumscribed area in South Africa wrested from the Americas their supremacy in the production of gold. Nevertheless the history of the two parts of the great western continent has been strikingly different. At first the Spaniards extracted vast treasures of silver from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia, while Colombia and some placer deposits in Peru yielded a smaller quantity of gold. A couple of centuries later, a stream of gold began to flow from Brazil, the silver production from the countries mentioned above continuing strong in the meanwhile. Later on, the yield of South America diminished, but to offset this there began a wonderful series of discoveries in North America. The gold fields of California astonished the world; and when the cream of these had been skimmed off there began a no less amazing development of the Central Cordilleran gold and silver districts, which soon wade the United States the greatest producer of the precious metals. Aided by ever improving technique, extensive exploration, and a system of railroads, the yield was maintained and increased. Still later followed the discoveries of the gold fields of the arctic region and silenced those who had maintained that the zenith in gold production had passed. At the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a con~mittee consisti~lg of 11. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr..J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is estremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of' the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. in volatile matter and from 40 to 75 per cent. of fixed combtistible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate: but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charsed coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible mill leave the furnace only partly burnecl, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven oft' per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 30 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

The caustic extraction of silica from Wisconsin and Minnesota taconite was investigated by bomb digestion over the temperature range from 312 to 40S°F at caustic concentrations from 25 to 500 gpl. Residual concentrates containing as much as 65 pct iron were obtained. The high rate of silica extraction is related to a microcrystalline variety of quartz, since it is shown that the rate of extraction of silica from quartz is directly proportional to its surface area. Increasing dependence on foreign ore reserves makes the need for developing the technology necessary for treatment of our low grade ores even greater than it was at the time of World War 11, when much research was conducted on the extraction of alumina from clays. Representative of these were the studies carried on at the University of Illinois.' More recently, the U. S. Bureau of Mines investigated the production of alumina from anorthosite, and currently the aluminum industry is showing renewed research interest in this field. The studies reported here are part of a continuing research program based on the above concepts and aimed at the eventual development of processes for the treatment of low grade ores, particularly those of iron. The fact that large reserves 3 of low grade nonmagnetic taconite are contained in the iron formation of the Wisconsin Gogebic range have made this ore an important and attractive target for investigation. The idea of removing silica by caustic extraction is not new.495 The digestion in caustic solution of ground flint, diatomite, and other forms of chalcedonic silica is the basis for the production of soluble sodium silicates by the wet-process. Upgrading bauxites by the caustic extraction of silica has been investigated6 and is the subject of a German patent.7 Although mention is made by Roe' of the caustic extraction of silica from low grade Michigan and Wisconsin iron ores, and he lists a number of patents and references on the subject, recent work in the field does not appear to be extensive. As far as the author knows, there has been no work in this field on these particular ores. It is hoped that this paper will stimulate further investigation which will eventually lead to an econclmic means of processing these large low grade reserbes. TACONITES The taconites investigated in this study were from Minnesota and Wisconsin. That from Minnesota, a semi-taconite, Nas obtained from the Oliver Iron Mining Division, U. S. Steel Corporation, and represents a sample of an oxidized iron formation from their King Mine on the Mesabi range. The Wisconsin taconite came originally from the trench sampling of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and represents a composite of the Norrie, Pabst, Yale, Plymouth, and Pence members of the Gogebic iron formation. Assays on these samples are given in Table I. A typical calcu1atr:d average analysis of the Wisconsin taconite is given in Table 11. Chemically, the Minnesota semi-taconite sample contains about 39 pct iron and 39 pct silica, while the Wisconsin taconite contains 30 pct iron and 53 pct silica, both on the dry basis.

It has been estimated that rock exposures in most mining districts aggregate less than 1 per cent. of the total surface area.1 Conclusions concerning the hidden 99 per cent. necessarily have been based on knowledge of only a small fraction of the surface, and from this limited information the geologist has been obliged to deduce the approximate and general nature of the underlying formations. In the search for ore it is necessary to supplement this general picture with greater detail. Fairly accurate knowledge of relatively small zones is required. This knowledge is carefully sought in many different ways—detailed interpretations of geological history, the tracing of float, the use of test pits, of trenching, of drilling, and of other methods. Practical ingenuity, scientific brilliance, great perseverance and patience, and the expenditure of large sums of money have all been a part of this search. The problem of exploring beneath cover with economy, and of obtaining essential information which this cover hides, is obviously a difficult one. It is also a very important one, for geologist's inform us that already the story of the 1 per cent. exposed outcrops has been largely read.V here remains the nearly virgin field comprised in the hidden 99 per cent.: and the importance of this zone is bound to increase continually. In recent years, the problems connected with the exploration of this "99 per cent. zone" have attracted a constantly enlarging group of investigators and at present greater efforts than ever before are being made to resolve them. This work, in it's various special aspects, has enlisted, beside geologists, the cooperative efforts of chemists, physicists, and mathematicians. The progress made in this development should be kept before those directing explorations in order that due advantage may be taken of a changing situation. My subject concerns certain aspects of one of the older physical methods of exploration, the magnetic method. The reflection method in seismic prospecting has aroused much interest in the past few years. The purpose of the present paper is to present the method of reflections in the mapping of geologic structure and also to give some indication of its limitations. The reflection method is well adapted to the mapping of geologic structure in the Mid-Continent fields, and has been found most useful there. The refraction method is ideally suited to the finding of structures, such as domes, where the amount of relief is very large. This explains the brilliant success of the refraction method in the Gulf Coastal region of Texas and Louisiana. The additional fact that salt has a much higher velocity than the surrounding sediments made their discovery much easier. By the use of the reflection method, differences of relief of 25 to 50 ft. to the mile may be detected at a depth of 5000 ft., and the depth points accurately plotted on a map. This is hardly possible by the use of the refraction method. The reflection method has been in almost continuous use in the Mid-Continent area since 1926, but very little, if anything, has been published until recently'(7) † regarding either the method or the results. The discovery of several oil fields is now attributed to the use of the reflection method. Reflection methods have been used by the Germans to find the thickness of the ice of several glaciers. (2,8) The depths there considered were of the order of only a few hundred feet. For the method to be of any practical value in this country, it must be able to work to depths of several thousand feet. As was indicated above, this is now possible, though there are many problems connected with the reflection method yet to be solved. The refraction method requires that the shooting be done over long ranges. It was necessary, for example, to take distances out to several miles in order to penetrate some five thousand feet. Naturally this uses a good deal of dynamite. In the reflection method the distances are much shorter and the amounts of dynamite are much smaller, within limits which will be noted below. The chief distinction between refraction and reflection methods is to be found in the analysis of the seismo-gram. Refraction shooting makes use of only the first arrival of energy

As a part of a general investigation of the separation of bitumen from hydrocarbon mixtures a study was made of a restricted quaternary system composed of methane, decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The work was limited to a pressure of 8000 psi, a temperature of 220 °F, and to a fixed relative proportion of decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The measurements permitted the determination of the distribution of these components in each of the fluid phases. It was not possible to distinguish a second liquid phase in the course of these measurements. Gas-liquid equilibrium "constants" of each of the components were found to vary markedly with the composition of the system while temperature and pressure remained fixed. INTRODUCTION The separation of bitumen frorn naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has been of importance for a number of years in the production of petroleum, especially in the California area. The deposition of this material from crude oils was noted in earlier studies of the solubility of natural gas in crude oil.¹,²,3 Studies of the separation of bitumen from crude oils from the Greeley and Santa Fe Springs fields were carried out."." The behavior of these systems appeared complex and studies of two restricted ternary systems involving mixtures of n-pentane, tetralin, and bitumen,' and of decane, tetralin; and hitumen, confirmed this belief. Reviews of the literature pertaining to the separation of bitumen from naturally occuring and refined hydrocarbons are available." The important effect of methane in the separation of bitu- men from naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures was apparent from the earlier studies and for that reason it appeared desirable to investigate a restricted quarternary system involving mixtures of methane. decane, tetralin, and bitumen; data concerning the behavior of mixtures of decane. tetralin. and bitumen having already been obtained.V his study was restricted to a pressure of 8000 psi," a temperatue of 220° F, and fixed relative proportions of bitumen, decane. and tetralin. This composite constituent, hereinafter designated as the less volatile constituent, was made up of 0.0455 weight fraction bitumen. 0.0909 weight fraction decane, and 0.8636 weight fraction tetralin. The experimental method involved bringing together mixtures of methane and the less volatile constituent in varying proportions in a constant volume container at the pressure and temperature indicated above. The composition of each of the phases was determined and from this the extent of the separation of bitumen was established. MATERIALS The bitumen used in this investigation was obtained from the same stocks employed in earlier studies. The crude material from the North Coles Levee field was stored in the laboratory] in a closed drum for a period of five years. Several samples from this stock were subjected to refining operations which were described earlier,' and every effort was made to follow the same procedure in all cases. It was necessary to prepare supplies of bitumen for this investigation at two rather widely different times. These materials have been identified as samples 1 and 2. The present symposium on flotation machines provides a unique opportunity for group reappraisal of standard or habitual viewpoints. A symposium is by definition a trading post- for observations that might prove complementary when put together, thus leading to useful thoughts that might not have been evident from the original observations individually. The present paper, pertaining to power consumption in flotation, is deliberately an experiment of that kind. Data were solicited from the operating superintendents of several of the major flotation plants on this continent. The information received, covering a total of 14 separate operations in seven plants, has been collated in terms of power intensity; that is, the total power input per cubic foot of cell volume. This departs somewhat from the conventional expression of power per ton of ore treated, though the latter figure is also given for the plants concerned. Because of wartime restrictions, particularly in Canada, identifying names of plants and machines are withheld. Not as a firm conclusion, but as a tender for symposium discussion, the following points are made: 1. That flotation is a power operation in much the same sense as ball milling. 2. That contact time is the complement of power intensity and may be decreased as the latter is increased. 3. That a decrease in flotation power per ton of ore can result from an increase in power intensity. Analogy with Grinding In grinding, it has become axiomatic that the more the power put into a given operation, the greater the work performance. The analogous view is now proposed that the effectiveness of any flotation operation will be related to the mechanical energy usefully applied to that operation. Under this view, each increment of properly directed input energy should give either an increase in unit tonnage or an improvement in the metallurgical separation (concentrate grade or tailing grade), until either the theoretical limit imposed by mineral constitution or surface condition is reached, or until further increments of power become uneconomic under the law of diminishing returns. Thus, as in grinding, there are two forms of output that greater power input or improved utilization of power can produce. As for the law of diminishing returns, lower unit cost of power through improved generating efficiency in the past decade has pushed the limit back. Over and above this, however, there is strong indication in the operationg data herein presented that higher power intensity results in an actual economy of over-all power consumption. Like crushing and grinding, flotation accomplishes a rupture of the forces of molecular attraction, by taking particles from the common environment and placing them in the two separate environments of

SHIOU-CHUAN SUN (author's reply).-Thanks are extended to Professor Hassialis for his recognition of the usefulness of a new tool, the cataphoretic cell, as an adjunct to the bubble machine and the abstraction test. His questions concerning adsorption, dielectric constant, floatability, activation, and depression are interesting and worthy of discussion. I According to Mueller,28 it is questionable that any of the present formulas gives absolute values of zeta potentials which are completely accurate. The problem is further complicated by the question" of whether the "dielectric constant" has any meaning at all for such a microscopically thin layer. With these in mind, the results in this paper should be considered in the relative sense as a first approximation and not as absolute quantities. Adsorption Referring to item a of Fig. 8, the dielectric constant and the viscosity of the xanthate solutions are the same for galena, sphalerite and quartz. If dielectric constant and viscosity (but not the adsorption) were the first-order variable of the cataphoretic system, as claimed by Professor Hassialis, then the magnitudes of zeta coefficient of galena, spha)erite and quartz would have been similar to each other. These are not. The big difference of zeta coefficient of these three minerals in the same xanthate solutions is not altogether unjustified to be attributed to their difference in adsorption of xanthate ions. This is supported by the results of chemical abstraction tests reported by Ince.14 Again, the big difference of zeta coefficient between wollastonite, calcite, and fluorite in the same laurylamine hydrochloride solutions (p. 118, Figs. 58, 59, and 60 of ref. r5) also indicates that the cataphoretic system is not governed chiefly by the dielectric constant. Beside the data shown in Fig. 8, other experimental evidences15 which support the idea of correlation between adsorption and zeta coefficient are: (I) there is a qualitative parallelism between the zeta coefficient curve and the chemical abstraction curve of sphalerite in solutions of various concentrations of sodium cyanide, (2) there is a qualitative parallelism between the zeta coefficient curve and the chemical abstraction curve of sphalerite in solutions of constant concentration of copper sulphate at different pH values, and (3) there is a qualitative parallelism between zeta coefficient curve and chemical abstraction curve of quartz in solutions with constant concentration of barium chloride at different pH values. The above mentioned experimental results are generally in agreement with Gouy's double layer theory,1-5 and support this idea that the concentration and the kind of ions adsorbed at the mineral surface and in the adjacent surrounding liquid chiefly govern the electrokinetic phenomena. Dielectric constant and viscosity of the liquid medium may be of somewhat lesser importance. It follows that the correlation between the coefficient and adsorption as claimed in this paper is justified. Dielectric Constant The term "dielectric constant " was first introduced into the electrokinetic equations by Perrin.30 In a footnote of his publication he states that Holmheltz has forgotten to include the dielectric constant. The conversion of the moment29 to the zeta potential involves an additional difficulty and confusion not involved for the moment, namely, assigning a value to the dielectric coefficient. This is conventionally assumed to be constant and equal to the dielectric constant of the bulk liquid. 21 The published literature 10, 12 indicates that the values of dielectric constant for dilute chemical solutions have been assumed as those of pure water.

UNTIL recently the only criteria by which steels were judged were their cost and their mechanical, chemical, and physical properties. The user was concerned with such properties as corrosion resistance, tensile strength, response to thermal treatment, hardness, ductility, and, to a growing extent in recent years, with behavior at high temperature. As plans were made to build power reactors, a new set of properties became important—the nuclear characteristics, which had to be considered by the designer and engineer in building his plant. The nuclear engineer developed methods for the rare and new metals and produced them in high purity, often at great expense. The pure metals then provided the raw materials for tailor-made alloys. For more common structural metals, such as steel, the nuclear industry depended on commercially available materials. Generally, the quantities required were small and specifications were rigid. It is not surprising, therefore, that difficulty was frequently encountered in procuring structural mate-

I wish to present to you a few thoughts on some of the phenomena and laws of iron smelting. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, to the great variety of points to be taken into consideration, many of which are very poorly understood, and to the meagreness and even conflictoriness of our information with regard to some of the most important laws which govern the subject, the fruits of such thoughts as I venture to offer you must be received as speculations, not as facts. Nevertheless, in discussing old phenomena from new standpoints, thus furnishing a metallurgical parallax, if I may say so, these theoretical speculations may have their value in helping to a clearer comprehension of the phenomena and laws we now know, and in suggesting new lines of inquiry. While an increase of height in blast furnaces is not always followed by increase in their power of production, experience proves that it tends to increase it; for while we have many cases of short furnaces producing more iron than longer ones, yet enormous productions, such as those of the Lucy and Isabella furnaces of Pittsburgh, and of the furnaces of Esch sur l'Alzette, in Luxembourg, have never been reached in short furnaces. We may safely infer that height is an element essential to great production, though of course not the only essential element, and that, in the case of high furnaces which are not capable of great production, some other essential element is wanting. Moreover, experience teaches that within limits increase of height tends to increase the producing power in a still higher ratio. Thus, in the Esch furnace, which is 19.8 meters (65 feet) high, 393 tonnes (or 387 gross tons) of 31 1/2 per cent. Ore

This paper describes an improved acidizing technique which has been applied in acidizing gas wells in the La Gloria Field. Wells acidized in this manner exhibited a much greater increase in deliverahility than wells acidized in the conventional manner. The acid is injected into the well in small slugs separated by a small volume of high pressure gas. The acid and gas are displaced from the tuhing by high pressure gas to reduce the hydrostatic head on the well when the acid is recovered from the well. The well is opened for production as soon as the acid and gas are displaced. This procedure permits a very rapid recovery of the acid which results in large increases in the deliverability of the gas wells. It has been found advantageous in the acidization of gas injection wells to inject the high pressure gas directly after the acid without backflowing the acid out of the well. This practice has made it possible to inject the gas in the injection wells of this field with a much lower pressure differential. This reduces the horsepower required to inject the gas and also decrease:, the number of injection wells required per reservoir. INTRODUCTION The results obtained by acidizing gas wells ill the La Gloria Field have varied considerably in the past. For this reason. a planned study of the acidizing procedure was undertaken in order to obtain more consistent results. The Frio Sands of the La Gloria Field are rather permeable and it was not necessary to acidize many of the wells when they were originally completed. At the completion of an eight-year cycling program in several of the gas reservoirs, it became necessary to recomplete many wells in other reservoirs. It was found that the opan Flow potential of the wells recompleted in different sands was not as large as wells that were originally completted in that reservoir. A study of the drilling records of several of these wells indicated that the sands had originally been subjected to considerable hydrostatic drilling fluid overload while the well was being drilled to the deeper sands of the field. It is indicated that during this eight-year period, the drilling mud and water that were lost into the formation when the well was being drilled had formed a relatively impermeable Eone around the well bore. This impermeable zone around the well bore made it very difficult to obtain high deliverability wells when the original wells are recompleted in other zones. Muskat' has shown that in uniformly permeable and porous formations a zone of partial plugging one ft in radius around the well would drastically decrease the productivity of the well. The analysis for this problem shows that the production capacity of a well is very sensitive to the value of the permeability of the zone immediately surrounding the well bore. This is to be expected in view of the highly localized character of the pressure drop in a radial flow system about the well center. IN studying the possibilities of a continuously recording magnetometer for use along the surface of the earth and in an airplane, the Federal Bureau of Mines was led to a study of the theoretical resolving power of magnetic observations, both in the variation of the total magnetic intensity and in each of the two components ordinarily measured. Along with this general study, an attempt was made to determine the relative worth of the total intensity anomaly and the vertical anomaly in geophysical prospecting. General considerations led to three conclusions: I. In the northern magnetic hemisphere of the earth, the total intensity anomaly is offset to the south of the vertical anomaly, for a positive anomaly (see Appendix, note I). 2. The resolving power of magnetic observations decreases rapidly with distance from the disturbing body. 3. The horizontal anomaly has little value in prediction of the disturbing body but might be useful in making a choice between bodies suggested by the vertical or total anomaly. Some of the considerations leading to these conclusions were: I. The normal intensity and the anomalous intensity are vectorially additive; hence for a positive anomaly in the northern magnetic hemisphere the total intensity will be a maximum at some point south of the disturbing body and north of the point at which the line to the disturbing body is parallel to the normal earth's field. The anomaly itself has a maximum value directly above the body. For a positive anomaly of constant magnitude, the total intensity will be a maximum when the anomaly vector is parallel to the normal vector. This is shown schematically in Fig. I (not to scale) for a magnetic distribution not restricted to a relatively thin sheet in the magnetic meridian. The normal field has a magnitude Io with vertical component Vo and horizontal component H,. Six station points along a traverse' across the body from south to north are shown at M to S. At each of these stations the normal magnetic field vector terminates at F. At each of these stations the magnetic field vector due to the disturbing body B terminates at A. The line through the station point and the point A passes through B. The magnitude of the anomaly, indicated by the length of the vector terminating at A, is proportional to some power of the distance from the station point to the disturbing body. If the' disturbing body B is a concentrated point of magnetic material, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse second power of the distance. For a uniform magnetic distribution over a line perpendicular to the observed traverse, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse first power of the distance. TROUGH washers were among the earliest methods used for concentrating ores; they are referred to by Agricola about the middle of the sixteenth century as already being used while the hand- operated jigging sieve had only recently come into use. For cleaning coal the trough washer apparently was first used in France and Belgium about 1841. The early trough washers were intermittent and the refuse at least was shoveled out by hand. The invention of a continuous jig washer, by a Frenchman, Berard, in 1848, acted as a stimulus to coal washings in jigs and retarded progress in trough washing in the nineteenth century. Chapman and Mott' describe a number of trough washers developed in England and on the Continent from 1850 to 1900, such as the Bell and Ramsay, Ramsay, Bell and Green, Wunderlich, Scaife, McLellan, Lodge, Elliott, Blackett, and Murton. The later of these removed the refuse mechanically, either intermittently or continuously, but in ways that interfered with stratification.

INTRODUCTION This introductory paper presents a description and definition of what the finance function is and what it specifically means for the mining industry. In its simplest terms, finance is, "management of money matters". As an area within the discipline of business administration it draws heavily on the related fields of economics and accounting, and to a lesser extent on marketing and production. MINING FINANCE DEFINED In preparing to write about what finance means to the mining industry, I asked a number of mining people the question, "What does mining finance mean to you?" Most responded that mining finance was "How a company borrowed money for mine development", and perhaps half those questioned included "raising equity" in the definition. It is not surprising that the mining industry concept of finance is the providing of funds needed for the objectives of the business, for that was once a view shared by authorities in the field of business administration. Further, it is certainly the area where much of the emphasis has been placed in the past ten to fifteen years as the industry struggled with the development of more remote and more refractory or lower-grade orebodies while profitability and internal cash flow were below expectations. No wonder project finance became such a popular topic. Twenty years ago it is probable that the emphasis would have been on mine valuation, for that subject was the area of finance then most often examined in industry publications. Papers concerning the pros and cons of payback, internal rate of return, and discounted cash flow appeared regularly. Let's examine the following situations, each the result of a financial decision: - Funding the exploration program in a developing country was accomplished by buying the next six-months budget needs in local currency. One week later the currency devalued 30 percent. If the purchase had been delayed or the local currency borrowed short term, a substantial saving would have been made in funding the program. - A major mining company borrows heavily to finance both expansion of its primary mining business and its entry into several new industry segments. When markets for all of the commodities it produces turn down for a prolonged period, there is concern over the adequacy of cashflow to cover debt service in addition to other company needs. The company's financial officers, however, had arranged very large committed credit facilities from numerous financial institutions which assured the availability of funds for several years. This enabled the company to implement a strategy to conserve cash, sell assets and survive until conditions improved. Further, short term suppliers of credit also were comfortable with the assurance that longer term credit was there to support them. -A medium size mining company financed several mines independently with limited obligations on the part of the parent company. The company decided to refinance the operations under one agreement. More flexible terms, lower interest cost and a longer tenor financing were achieved in return for assuming the risk as a direct obligor. - The exploration and development group of a large mining company proposes to develop a new mine in a country in which the company does not presently operate. Societe Miniere & Metallurgique de Penarroya Noyelles-Godault works are located in the northern part of France. The complex includes a lead smelter, a zinc smelter, shops for production of manufactured products and all necessary general services. The zinc smelting complex described in this paper was designed in 1959 to replace an old horizontal retort distillation furnace and was first operated in May 1962. It includes: - a sinter plant producing the zinc sinter for the Imperial Smelting furnace : zinc, lead and bulk zinc-lead concentrates are sintered on a Dwight-Lloyd machine with a working area of 80 sq.m. Cadmium sludges are treated by the wet method in a separate plant for recovery of cadmium. Sulphur dioxide contained in gases goes to a gas washing tower and is subsequently made into sulphuric acid in a plant with a capacity of 550 m.t. per day. - a smelting plant where the process developed by Imperial Smelting Processes Ltd. is applied : the blast furnace which was modified in 1967 has an area of 17.5 sq.m. at the tuyeres level and a section of 24 sq.m. at the top of the shaft. It has a theoretical zinc capacity of 100,000 m.t. per annum. Air blast is heated by means of covers up to the theoretical temperature of 950ºC. Zinc produced is either directly cast into slabs for sale as standard 'good ordinary brand' zinc, or sent to a refining plant where the New Jersey process designed to produce 'special high grade' zinc is in application. Mixes of zinc containing various amounts of lead, cadmium or aluminum are prepared to customer specification in a mixing plant.

INTRODUCTION THE correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refinements in X ray diffraction techniques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and fetter in 1940.2 Now that a suffcient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. 'I he purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation on mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening. Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by an alloy system in which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening. THE Australian lead-smelting plants began to use charges carrying high zinc percentages somewhat earlier than was common with American plants. When lead smelting first started in Australia the immense deposits of oxidized lead at Broken Hill were available but later these oxidized ores became exhausted and were replaced by sulfides. This was before the days of flotation and these sulfides when concentrated carried about 1 per cent. of zinc to 6 per cent. of lead. The works of the Sulphide Corpn. at Cockle Creek was perhaps the pioneer in high-zinc slags but the Port Pirie plant of the Proprietary Co. was a close and very able second and has continued the work to the present time. The Cockle Creek lead furnaces remained in operation until shortly after the war when most of the Broken Hill companies combined and took over the Port Pirie plant to treat their concentrates. As it was the practice both at Cockle Creek and Port Pirie to carry 20 per cent. or more of lead on the charge, it was found that under these conditions of large amounts of zinc in the charge, good roasting was absolutely necessary and matte production was unwise. The Hunting-ton-Heberlein system of roasting was introduced and later the Dwight & Lloyd process. In this way, by roasting the sulfide portions of the charge as thoroughly as possible and making no matte, a method of smelting was developed where the slag over long periods carried as high as 20 per cent. ZnO without serious furnace troubles, and slags carrying even up to 33 per cent. ZnO have been reported. The zinc slags were not very different in appearance from the ordinary slags produced in American practice except that they gave off more smoke and fume on tapping. The slag usually ran hot and freely, coming from the tap in a full stream. Normally there was little crust on the sides of the furnace and the tuyeres gave no trouble though they were always rather dark. At the works of the Sulphide Corpn. it was the custom, on account of the labor situation, to shut down the furnaces during the Christmas holidays, thus giving a campaign of about 12 months. The furnaces at the end of the run usually showed no crust on the sides, though crusts always occurred at the back and front ends. Since its introduction to the petroleum industry in 1949 by Clark,1 hydraulic fracturing or "hydrafracing" has developed into a widely respected and useful technique for increasing production from petroleum reservoirs. Even then, Clark described production increases of from 6 to 100 barrels of oil per day (bopd). Since that time, others have described treatments in which production increased from 12 to 456 bopd, from only a show to 40 bopd;2 from 48 to 219 bopd; 3 from 500 to 1400 bopd and from a show to 192 bopd.4 Although representative of only a few of many successful hydraulic fracturing operational6 these increases in production attest to the past and potential value of the hydrafracing technique to the petroleum industry. The technique has received a considerable amount of theoretical and experimental attention.1, 5-20 Unfortunately, however, the degree of general understanding of the mechanics of hydraulic fracturing is still inadequate to solve many recurring problems. The practicing engineer is plagued with difficulties in predicting such factors as: (1) the required pressure and viscosity of the fracturing fluid to not only induce the fracture but to control the extent of its growth, (2) the strength characteristics and amount of proppant to include in the fluid so that the fracture is held open once the fluid pressure is decreased, and (3) the volume of the reservoir influenced by the induced fractures and the resulting increase in production. A major cause of these difficulties is the uncertainty associated with determining the orientation of the hydraulically induced fractures. One's natural conclusion in considering the problem is that the orientation of the fracture would depend on several variables, as, for example, the relationship between the viscosity and injection rate of the fluid and the

A study of Americarf coal-mine practice shows two of its distinctive features to be: A greater number of accidents per thousand employees than in any of the other leading coal-producing countries; a much greater percentage of the coal lost than in any of the other leading coal-producing countries. Although our subject is mainly concerned with the second feature, any consideration of mining methods should include safety, efficiency, and economy or costs. If the argument could be offered that our wasteful mining was necessary on account of safety, and that it is carried out with less loss of life than in other countries, the plea for conservation of coal could not he so strongly urged. But when we are wasteful of both life and property, the subject merits more: consideration than it has received. Some coal operators will doubtless say that the unit of accidents should be the number per million tons produced rather than per thousand employees, for by adopting this unit America probably stands in the lead rather than the lowest among the countries. However, vital statistics are not usually so expressed by other governments, by life and accident insurance companies, or in other industries, and it is merely begging the question and attempting to bolster up a bad condition to adopt a peculiar unit for the statement of our accidents. For many years the statement was made by various agencies, and was unchallenged, that "For every ton of bituminous coal mined in the United States a ton had been lost in the way of pillars left in the mines." This statement was undoubtedly true for many years, and although in the past decade some progress has been made toward obtaining a higher extraction, and in some districts very decided progress, the loss is still great; and, although no exact data can be given, it is probable that for the United States as a whole at least one ton is lost for every two mined.

THE Annual Fall Meeting held in Chicago in conjunction with the celebration of a Centennial of Engineering brought forth a round of field trips and symposiums which did much to add to the store of information of the 240 who registered for the gathering. Instead of a scattered program, technical papers were grouped together in organized symposiums, where the particular importance of each report was enhanced by presentation in context. Despite the heavy accent on technical papers and informative field trips, those attending the meeting had ample time to enjoy the benefits of a visit to Chicago. The AIME dinner dance was held at the Palmer House, in the Red Lacquer Room. The Chicago Section played host Friday evening at dinner. The MBD held four sessions at the meeting headquarters, the Palmer House, September 4 and 5. Featuring the meetings was a review of taconite concentration and new theories on comminution. The first session opened with a paper on the Structural Features Which Effect the Concentration of Iron Formations, presented by F. J. Tolonen. The paper was centered upon the various members of the low grade iron formations of the separate Michigan districts. The study correlated macrostructure, microstructure, and concentration tests. [ ] Beneficiation Characteristics of Michigan Low Grade Iron Ores, presented by F. X. Tartaron, cochairman of the session, reviewed the work of his laboratory on the beneficiation of low grade ore taken from various strata of a deep shaft on the Marquette Range. The paper included data on flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation, and combinations of these processes. The economics of low grade ore treatment generated great interest. Ty. Maki offered a compilation and correlation of field results with magnetic separators in ferrosilicon and magnetite medium recovery circuits. Following the morning session, 130 persons attended a luncheon, followed by a brief business meeting. Later, a film illustrating the grinding, separation, and pelletizing steps investigated by the Mines Experiment Bureau, was presented by H. H. Wade. T. E. Ban, and L. J. Erck gave a report on pelletizing which evoked much discussion. R. A. Limons presented a paper on the Mineralogy of Blast Furnace Sinter, for its author, H. M. Kraner. Friday sessions featured a new hypothesis for high speed drill rod milling and a new technical approach to comminution. Jack Myers commented that Consolidated's large rod mill was a hammer mill turned inside out. Steve Erickson described the use of Cyclones for Heavy Media Concentration of Iron Ore Fines. Bob Meaders gave a Progress Report on the Aerofall Mill. Shiou-Chuan Sun described an improved high frequency analyzer for studying the conductivity of suspensions of various minerals. L. A. Roe discussed a magnetic reflux condensor which enabled him to determine the degree of liberation of magnetic iron ores. Roy A. Johnson described a function of the hydroscilator in which the fan rake was eliminated in favor of a conical bottom. The Industrial Minerals Division sessions held September 5 and 6 and were well attended. The Friday morning session was particularly concerned with developments and advances in industrial minerals with special emphasis on the Chicago area. The first two papers dealt with transportation on the Great Lakes and fuel movement into the Chicago area. The third paper proved to be of great interest, turning the spotlight on the fairly new hydraulic mining methods introduced by a silica company in the Ottawa, Ill. field.
