The time-honored description of the growth of metal crystals to form polycrystalline aggregates is one in which two important steps are considered: (1) nucleation, and (2) dendritic growth, each dendrite starting from its individual nucleus and resulting (upon slow cooling, assuming no solid phase changes) in a macrograin. This picture of the process of crystallization is incomplete, and it is with the hope of enlarging upon it that the following summary and correlation of experimental results are given. Mosaic Structure For an exact definition of the mosaic structure of metal crystals—if, indeed, one can be found that will hold for all metals—one must await the results of much experimental work in this field. The writer's investigations have been confined almost entirely to copper and a few of its alloys. The following terms are proposed, and will be used in this report: Macromosaic Structure1.—Large-scale mosaic structure; more specifically, mosaic structure of a scale large enough to produce splitting of Laue spots on back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns2. The deviation from exact parallelism of neighboring macromosaics varies from a few minutes to a few degrees3. Just as there are no exact dimension limits for macrograins, so the dimensions of a macromosaic vary considerably. ALL of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.I The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). The solubility of hydrogen in liquid Pure iron and in a number of liquid binary iron alloys has been measured in a Sieverts'-type apparatus. Sieverts' law is obeyed in all alloys studied UP to 1 atm Pressure H2. The alloying elements, Al, B, C, Co, Cu, Ge, P, S, and Sn, decrease the solubility while Cb, Cr, Mn, and Ni increase it. ALTHOUGH the importance of hydrogen in steel-making has long been recognized, there has been, until recently, very little information in the literature on the effect of alloying elements on the solubility of hydrogen in iron. There is also disagreement on the solubility of the gas in liquid pure iron. Because of the earlier work in this laboratory,1,2 with the Sieverts method to determine the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys, it was decided to apply the equipment and procedure to hydrogen. The literature that is pertinent to this study (Ftefs. 1 through 15) will be discussed later when the results of this investigation are considered rather than at this point to avoid repetition. Although the crystallography of lattice transformations has been studied extensively during the past few years, these studies have been limited, with few exceptions1'2, to specimens in which the transformed lattice appears as a segregate phase. A realization of the technical importance of the segregation mechanism, especially in the formation of martensitic structures and in age-hardening phenomena, has undoubtedly stimulated research in this direction. In the crystallographic studies of segregation, the general problem has been to relate the orientation of the parent crystal to that of the segregate crystals. The technique has been complicated by the fact that it has been necessary to deal with the presence of as many as 24 ideal segregate orientations within one parent lattice; furthermore, the segregate lattices are invariably scattered (seldom less than ±2º, often as much as 15" or 20') about these ideal positions. It is probable that a more complete picture of phase transformations may result from a study in which complete lattice relationships between individual grains are evaluated, thereby providing an additional parameter which when it is necessary to work with multiple segregate orientations, cannot be evaluated. The present paper presents the results of such a study, ? wherein a peritectic reaction is made use of to produce the transformed lattices. It is desired in these notes to record a vein-phenomenon certainly unique in the writer's limited experience, and, as it seems to him, sufficiently rare to be worthy of mention. In the little mining camp of Forbestown, situated in the Sierra Nevada of California, it was announced one day, when the miners of the Cold Banks mine came off shift, that "washed gravel" had been struck on the 265-foot level. To those acquainted with that section and the character of the mine (a gold-bearing quartz-vein) this was a somewhat startling announcement; for, prolific as the State is, we are not in the habit of mixing up promiscuously our vein- and placer-deposits. However, the statement proved to have some foundation. The mine is located at an altitude of about 2700 feet, on the brink of one of the great canyons of erosion characteristic of the drainage of this range. A lateral ravine cuts the vein at right angles, thus making its general strike approximately parallel to the canyon at this point, and with a variable dip of from 20 to 40 degrees towards the canyon. The strong, well-defined vein, often 20 feet wide and more, presents nothing to distinguish it particularly from scores of others in the State, unless if be considered peculiar in the highly crystalline character of its quartz and the nature of the enclosing country-rock, which is metamorphic in the extreme, very hard, devoid of lamination, and in bedding so obscure that it might easily pass—at least on superficial examination—for one of the basic eruptives. Near by in the district can be found a series of slates common to the gold-belt of this range, and within the limit of the company's property is an intrusion of an acid eruptive. GOOD will is becoming recognized more and more as a necessary business asset, and a successful concern must have the good will not only of its customers and the public, but of its employees. Management -enlightened management-recognizes this and will go the limit to get it. Progress depends on cooperation, and in industry cooperation must be based on the acceptance by employ-ers and employees of some practical application of the principle that capital and labor are interdependent. Capital cannot exist without labor, and labor without capital is helpless. The development of each is depen-dent on the cooperation of the other. Confidence and good will are the foundation of every successful enter-prise, and these can be created only by securing a point of contact between employer and employee. We feel that one of the most effective agencies for promoting good will between employers and employees is through some well organized method of conference and have consequently adopted, to accomplish this, a plan of employee representation. The plan inaugurated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. about four years ago, which provides for the election by secret ballot of representatives by and from among the employees, has for its purpose three fundamentals; namely, to give the employees a voice in the determina-tion of the conditions under which they work, to furnish machinery for the prevention and adjustment of differ-ences between employees and management, and, so far as possible, to provide and foster continuous employment. The constitution and by-laws adopted take care of the detail in setting up machinery for the functioning of the representatives of both management and men, but the spirit with which the plan has been carried out and the results which have been accomplished are of far greater importance than the plan itself. The Bethlehem plan, which has been in operation since October, 1918, can no longer be classed as an experiment. The original by-laws provided for amend-ments and, as was anticipated, changes and improve-ments have been made from time to time by mutual agreement. The operation of the plan for over four years shows it to be fundamentally sound and that it must therefore be conceded a success.

The theory of a zonal deposition of ores from ascending solutions which were differentiation products of a cooling magma, first propounded by Spurr,l in a measure explained by Lindgren,2 and recently re-emphasized by kemp,3 while perhaps accepted in principle by many mining geologists, so far has not been accepted as capable of practical application in the study and development of ore deposits. From his observations, the writer is convinced that there are laws governing the primary deposition of ores which, when properly worked out, will be of greatest economic value; and that the application of this knowledge to the development of new mines will mark an advance in the mining industry similar to that following the working out and application of the theory of secondary enriehiment. That there has been a tendency to a zonal distribution in the formation of ore deposits, by which the ores of one metal have been precipitated from tile mincralizing solutiolis at a greater distance from the source than those of another, cannot be disputed; and the nature of this zoning in a given deposit or district has been frequently described.4 But that a selection precipitation of the ores of two or more metals, other than lead and zinc, in successive zones may have taken place in a single deposit within limits economically possible of exploration is not generally recognized or admitted.

FROM Aug. 31, 1937, until Apr. 30, 1939, there were 40,872,610 bbl. of oil run to storage in California; from Apr. 30, 1939, to Aug. 31 of the same year 5,512,912 bbl. were withdrawn from storage. But from Aug. 31, 1937, to Aug. 31, 1939, the number of producing wells in the state has increased from 17,706, with a potential production of 1,323,202 bbl., to 18,910, with a potential of 2,302,282 bbl. Thus, in a period of two years, during the first 20 months stocks increased over 1/3 and during the following four months stocks decreased 1/30. In the same two years the number of productive wells increased 1/15 and potential increased 3/4. Undoubtedly, the large increase in stocks created the pressure that caused the reduction in stocks that followed; yet this has come about in spite of the larger number of wells and higher potential. Cause of the change was the adoption on May 17, 1939, by the Central Committee of California Oil Producers of a uniform method of oil curtail-ment for all wells throughout the state. Acceptance of the method in the four months following adoption by practically all fields in California indicates that producers generally are convinced of its merit and fairness. True, some operators still overproduce, but the restraint practiced by the remainder of the industry has been sufficient to turn a situation headed for chaos into one of reasonable stability. Credit for this change goes to the industry itself, because it has all been accomplished under voluntary oil curtailment.

The occurrence of the tellurides of gold and silver, even in small quantities, is so rare that their metallurgical treatment has engaged little attention. A residence of several months at one of the few mines in North America the product of which consists entirely of such ore, has led me to arrange a method for its economical treatment. The mine referred to is the Huronian, situated a few miles distant from Jackfish Lake, in Ontario, Canada. The plan proposed is for this peculiar case, and is put on record as possibly suggestive and helpful .in any similar instance, should it occur. Since freight-rates from the mine to the nearest railroad-point were extremely high, and for other economical reasons, the method proposed is modified by the use, as far as possible, of the machinery already at the mine, and is so arranged that bullion instead of concentrates would be obtained as a final product. The ore-vein at the Huronian mine varied in width from about 4 feet at the surface to 2 feet and less at the lowest level—125 feet —and dipped southeast about 88. The rock consisted, on both foot- and hanging-walls, of soft, green Huronian slates carrying much highly crystalline but barren pyrite. The ore carried an inconsiderable amount of galena with iron and copper pyrites, argentite, hessite, sylvanite (or petzite), and probably altaite, the telluride of lead. Near the surface the ore showed considerable native gold, but this disappeared with greater depth. Two complete analyses of minerals containing tellurium are here attached, as they establish the presence of two important compounds: I. In recent years considerable work has been undertaken in order to gain an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the generation of recrystal- lization textures in face-centered-cubic metals. Two theories have been proposed, that of oriented growth1 and that of oriented nucleation,' and several attempts have been made to check these theories directly by recrystallizing deformed single crystals.3-5 Two groups, Graham-Cahn and Liebmann-Liicke-Masing, studied the orientation of recrystallized grains and their rate of growth, both using strained aluminum single crystals of commercial purity (Graham et al., 99.6 pct, Liebmann et al., 99.8 pct). A geological map of a State involves very much, and its pre sentation to the public incurs grave responsibilities. It has been for a long time my earnest desire to bring out and place before the pub lic a geological map of New York which might be creditable to the State and worthy of a place among her scientific publications. We have done much for the advancement of geological science in this State—very much, and in many directions—but unfortunately, this feature, which should have been made the basis of all our work, has been too long neglected and delayed. For twenty-five years I have been laboring and looking forward to this consummation. I have recorded the field-work, systematic and desultory, upon such maps as were available for this use; and notwithstanding their imperfec tion, I have been able to transfer this recorded information to a more perfect base, which it is hoped will be completed during the early months of the next year. In 1883 I had combined, upon a small map of the State, the in formation which we possessed at that time, and communicated the same with my annual report to the Legislature. The report mas published in the regular course, but the special appropriation made for the map was vetoed by the Governor. Not discouraged by this untoward and unexpected circumstance, I continued my work, and made every effort to render the map more complete, preparatory to its communication with the next annual report. I brought together all the information within my reach, whether published or unpublished, reviewing and revising, as far as practicable, the work done by myself and assistants in southern and southeastern New York.

The Tintic Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation operates the Burgin Mine in the East Tintic District near Eureka, Utah, approximately 75 miles south of Salt Lake City. The Division was organized in 1963 to develop concealed replacement orebodies in the area located by Bear Creek Mining Company, Kennecott's domestic exploration subsidiary. Several accounts of the discovery of these orebodies and the general geology of the area have been given (1, 2). The ore is very complex and of varying degrees of oxidation and alteration. The principal metal values are lead, zinc, silver, and cadmium. The Burgin No. 2 shaft was sunk in 1963 to provide access for mining the orebodies. Much of the ore mined after this shaft was sunk was high grade and shipped directly to smelters, but concurrently it was recognized that concentration would be required to upgrade the lower grade ore in the deposits. Accordingly, in January 1967, authorization was received to construct a 500 tpd concentrator. From the beginning it was expected that the characteristics of the mill feed would vary widely and unpredictably as mining progressed. This paper summarizes the characteristics of the ore, the test work upon which the plant design was based, the engineering and construction, and the present operation of the facility eighteen months after startup. The market for Pennsylvania grade showed a drop both in demand and in prices, which reacted unfavorably on New York oil production, all of which comes under that classification. The output for the year in New York amounted to 5,045,200 bbl. The production in 1937 was 5,478,000 bbl., the largest in any year for the last half century or more. Falling prices, of course, affected new drilling. They declined from $2.20 a barrel, which was posted at the start, to $1.68 in the final months of 1938. With this came a reduction in the amount of oil that would be accepted by the refineries operating in the New York fields. Conditions therefore have combined to halt, at least temporarily, the growth of oil production in the state, which had experienced a steady gain for the last 15 years or more, the yield having risen from less than 1,000,000 bbl. to the round total of 5,500,000 bbl. in 1937. Practically all the oil now obtained is from old, developed fields. No new pools have been found in the last quarter of a century or more. The larger share comes from flooding the sands. Although there are many wells that still produce without the aid of the water drive, they are small and for the most part are pumped periodically. Of late, new drilling has been restricted mainly to that required to maintain existing flood projects. Because of the high initial cost and time required to put a flood into production, the depressed condition of the market has been a serious handicap financially, and, further, has been an unfavorable influence on the planning of operations to secure the maximum recovery of the oil. Unless market conditions improve, it is certain that the effects will be shown in the yield for some time to come. Gas Developments Drilling was active in the southwestern area, chiefly in Allegany and Steuben Counties, and some notable wells were brought in that tapped the Oriskany sandstone. Altogether 42 holes were put down in the two counties, of which 31 were listed as producers and 11 were dry. The new wells gave an initial daily flow of 239,000 M cu. ft. At the close of

The Eagle mine is situated in the Kerber Creek mining district, Bonanza, Saguache County, Colo. The climate and topography of this district arc similar to those of mining camps of the Rocky Mountain region that lie 9000 to 12,000 ft. above sea level. The district is at the northeasterly edge of the San Juan volcanic region, in which successive Tertiary lavas have built up a high plateau resting upon earlier sedimentary formations, or the underlying pre-Cambrian complex. The latter was exposed in places by erosion previous to the eruptions. In the Bonanza district, proper, only volcanic formations, andesites and latites, are found. Dr. H. B. Patton,1 in his survey of the district, discriminates between several varieties of lavas and maps these as distinct flows. They are local variations within the same lava and it is impossible to determine any distinct line of demarkation between them. Structurally they are members of the same flow. There are three general types of vein occurrences: 1. Lead-zinc-copper-silver-gold veins in well-defined fissures with a quartz gangue; ill these, the various sulfides show a zonal arrangement. 2. Massive gray copper ores high in silver, in irregular fractures in the form of small lenses and pockets, in which little or no quartz is found. 3. Manganiferous quartz veins very low in silver and gold at the surface which, with depth, become important silver veins containing subordinate amounts of gold. These veins have a quartz gangue with an abundance of Phodochrosite. The silver is associated with small amounts of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite; fluorite also is present. The Eagle is the only mine that has been developed in the manganiferous quartz type of vein. The Kosaka smelter is situated in the extreme northern end of Hondo (the main island of Japan) 15 mi. east of Odate, on the government railroad, to which it is connected by a private railway. It contains ten blast furnaces having a maximum daily capacity of 1600 short tons of ore, conducting a slow pyritic smelting entirely without coke or limestone, and with a charge carrying over 50 per cent. of briquetted and agglomerated fines. The matte (35 per cent. Cu) is blown in two basic-lined barrel converters, the blister copper (98.8 per cent. Cu) being cast at once into anodes. The adjoining refinery contains 600 tanks with a maximum capacity of 1300 tons of cathodes per month, the byproducts being gold, silver, and bismuth. At present, working at about half capacity, the whole plant consumes 2000 kw. of hydro-electric power, and employs 850 men and women. The ores are derived from two principal sources: The relatively new Hanaoka mine, 20 mi. from the smelter, yielding copper pyrites by underground mining, and the old Kosaka open-cut mine, 1 1/2 mi. from the smelter, yielding three different ores: (a) kuromono, a compact finegrained mixture of barite (32 per cent.), zinc blende, galena, and pyrite, the whole carrying about 2.5 per cent. Cu; (6) cupriferous pyrites with 2.4 per cent. Cu; (c) siliceous ore with 2 per cent. Cu. The Hanaoka ore now constitutes approximately one-half of the charge, almost replacing the Kosaka kuromono which was the ore chiefly smelted until 1913.'

With the extensive deposits of potash minerals which have been discovered in the southwestern states, and their rapid development, a permanent American supply of potassium compounds is now assured. The 325-year history of the potash industry in this country has been told by H. I. Smith1, of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the more recent activities of the Survey and of American potash companies were described last year by the same author2. In fact, it may be stated that so great is the productive capacity that two mines in New Mexico and one in California are able to supply more than half a million tons of crude and refined salts over and above that produced for agricultural purposes. The era of scarcity has given way to an era of superabundance. This situatiori makes it desirable for the potash producer to look for other applications for his product, and it is with this in mind that the writer presents some information pertaining to present and possible future uses for potassium compounds in the ceramic industry. Ceramic Products Ceramic products are essentially solid materials containing one or more oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, FeO, K2O, Na2O, TiO2, which are the oxides of greatest abundance in the earth's crust. The typical ceramic process is that of firing or burning the batch, and the product may be glassy, crystalline or mixed. In the glassy or vitreous group come glass, porcelain enamel and glazes; in the crystalline group, refractory materials such as silica brick, or chromite or magnesia; and in the mixed group, porcelain, chinaware, stoneware, tile, brick, etc., which contain both a vitreous and a crystalline phase, in variable proportions. The ceramic industry of the United States is a billion dollar industry, and is important not only because of its magnitude but also because of the key position occupied by certain ceramic products in the whole manufacturing structure. The Quebrada Blanca copper/molybdenum prospect lies on a dissected plateau in the high Andes of Northern Chile. The Superior Oil-Falconbridge Group began exploration of the Property in 1977 under a joint venture foreign investment agreement with the Chilean government. Quebrada Blanca is a relatively high grade secondarily enriched porphry copper deposit. Primary mineralization occurred 38 million years ago and accompanied quartz monzonite intrusive. Early disseminated Primary mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccia, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene enrichment Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels and then partially re-exposed in Quaternary time. During the past five years, a successful exploration program has developed an open-pit mining reserve, provided samples for bulk metallurgical testing, and located more than adequate supplies of water for future operations. The main orebody is amenable to conventional metallurgical treatment and contains more than 400 Mt (441 million st) of recoverable open-pit ore at about a 1:1 overall stripping ratio. The average millhead grade during the first six years of operations will exceed 1.5% Cu, plus recoverable molybdenum values. Forty-sixth Meeting The forty-sixth meeting of the Boston section was held at the University Club on Monday evening, Jan. 28, 1918. Thirty-six members and guests were present, which is a record for this Section. After a good dinner, President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, was introduced, and spoke of the many problems of the Institute. The topics covered were the progress and growth of the Institute during the administrative year, the efforts to stimulate the local sections and to bring them more in touch with the policies and problems of the parent body and, last but not least, of the constructive results and patriotic work of the Institute in the national service of the war. The other guest of the Section, Mr. Thomas Nelson Perkins, Counsel for the Priority Board, spoke most entertainingly of recent experiences in Russia, England and France. After considerable discussion during which Mr. Perkins most obligingly answered innumerable questions, the meeting adjourned at about 10 p. m.
