The chemical and physical propertties of slag systems are of special interest to metallurgists, for nearly all metals are in contact with molten slags during the primary reduction from their ores and then during the subsequent refining and alloying processes that determine their ultimate use. These processes are carried out at high temperatures and involve such complex chemical systems that funda-mental scientific knowledge of the Properties and behavior of these slags is inadequate. Various hypotheses have been Proposed to explain known slag characteristics. The commonest of these regard the molten slag as constituted of compounds that are dissociated in varying degrees into their constituent oxides, as illustrated by Schenckl and the recent Papers of Chipman and co-authors. Another proposal is that these compounds dissociate by com-plete6 or partial ionization, the evidence for which has been reviewed by Martin and Derge.? whatever hypothesis is favored, the exact formulation of these compounds is incomplete. It is based on three principal types of information: 1. Studies of solidified 51% samples by X ray diffraction, petrography, and similar methods that can be used at room temperature. The correlation of this information with the high-temperature properties of the molten slag is uncertain. 2. Studies of slag-metal equilibria, which have the advantage of providing observations on the molten slag at high temperature. However, even these data present problems of interpretation because they require a complete knowledge of the metal phase. 3. Direct measurements of properties of molten slag at the temperature of greatest metallurgical interest. Viscosity, electrical conductivity, specific heats, and similar properties have been measured, but the data of this type are widely scattered and frequently difficult to interpret. Additional direct measurements of properties of molten slag that can be interpreted in terms of chemical behavior are required, and this paper shows that the standard physical-chemical measurement of reversible electrode potentials, which measure the activity of specific constituents, is a fruitful source of such information. The purpose of this investigation, therefore, was to find an electrode combination that would yield reversible electromotive force measurements when dipped into the molten slag to be studied. Slags of the systems cao-sio2 and cao-120,-SiO2 were chosen for study because graphite containers could be used and the data could be correlated with those for viscosity, conductivity, and other proper-

IN order to understand more fully the actual state of copper lost in copper reverberatory slags, a systematic study on the various reactions between certain metallurgically important copper compounds and synthetic copper reverberatory slags was undertaken by the authors in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1942 to 1945.1 This paper, being only a part of the work completed, is published first because it furnishes the first experimental evidence of the formation of copper ferrite from reactions between cuprous oxide and copper reverberatory slags. CHOICE OF SLAG COMPOSITION The choice of the composition of the synthetic reverberatory slags to be used was much deliberated. Commercial copper reverberatory slags, neglecting minor constituents, average:2.3 45 to 47 pct FeO; 38 to 42 pct Si02; 5 to 6 pct CaO; 5 to 6 pct A1203. Since the ternary system CaO-FeO-SiO2 has been much more thoroughly studied4 and is much simpler than the quaternary system CaO-FeO-Si02-A1203, it was decided to use calcium oxide only instead of calcium oxide and alumina in the synthesis of the slags. Fortunately the composition of the average copper reverberatory slag with calcium oxide substituted for alumina lies in the region of the phase diagram clarified by the investigators. A survey of the phase diagram (Fig I) suggested two compositions: (I) the com¬position near the invariant point S, which is made up of 46 pct ferrous oxide, 37 pct silica and 17 pct calcium oxide; (2) the composition near the invariant point K with 45.5 pct ferrous oxide, 43 pct silica and 11.5 pct calcium oxide. Composition S has the advantage that the percentages of ferrous oxide and of silica almost exactly coincide with those of the average reverberatory slags, and that of the lowest melting point (1093° ± 3°C) in the whole ternary system. The calcium oxide content, however, obviously is high. Since we have already substituted calcium oxide for alumina, and since calcium oxide is more basic than alumina, the resulting slag is decidedly too basic. Composition K has a slightly higher melting point (1105° ± 3°C) and a higher silica content, but this is preferred because the slag is saturated with respect to tridymite and thus should not corrode siliceous refractories. IT has been known for several years1 that certain alloys of the Konal type, containing commercial cobalt (99.32 per cent C0 and 0.42 per cent Ni) and varying amounts of ferrotitanium, exhibit very high tensile strengths at 600°C. However, their pro-portional limits and yield points are rela-tively low. Published data1 for the alloys quenched in water from 950°C. and then tested at 600°C. are summarized in the upper section of Fig. I. Similar specimens that were aged at 650°C. for 72 hr., after quench and prior to testing at 600°C., gave the results shown in the lower section of Fig. I. In the present work the investigation of the properties of these materials has been extended by a study of the tensile deforma- tion characteristics in moderately long-time tests at 600°, 700° and 800°C. after quenching from various solution tempera-tures. Resume.—The district of Santa Eulalia lies 12 miles to the southeast of the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. The ore deposits occur in a Cretaceous limestone of unknown thickness, overlain by a series of rhyolitic tuffs and flows. The limestone is very gently folded and is cut by several systems of fissures, of which only those with a general north-south strike are pre-mineral and control the deposition. The deposits are of two main types; the earlier silver-bearing iron sulphide type occurs as high-grade tabular bodies resembling veins and as large masses of relatively low-grade ore, The gangue of this type is composed of lime-iron silicates that point toward a close association with an igneous rock mass which has not yet been encountered. In the later silver-lead-zinc type the ore occurs in vertical chimneys and horizontal mantas, principally as oxides, though at a depth of 1,500 ft. some sulphides have been encountered. During oxidation the ore chambers have increased in size owing to the solution of the walls by the sulphuric acid generated in the process, and a substitution has taken place of nearly one-half part by weight of the original constituents of the ore, by newly introduced elements and radicals. Both types are believed to have come from greater depths than those yet reached by mining, and their ultimate source, from a consideration of similar deposits, is believed to be an igneous rock in contact with the limestone at some horizon below. The deposits are believed to have been formed at unusually great depths, as indicated by the proved great vertical range of the silicate minerals coupled with the absence of the igneous rock, and by the practically unchanged character of the silver-lead-zinc ores as far as developed. The volcanic capping is believed to be distinctly later than the economically important ore deposition. THE solid solutions which aluminum forms with copper, and with magnesium and silicon, are not extensive, and accordingly could not be expected to form Widmanstätten figures profusely nor with great ease. A study of the Widmanstätten figures in these systems seemed desirable, however, because of the interest which these alloys bear towards age-hardening theories resulting from the necessary relationship between the age-hardening phenomena and the atomic processes leading to the formation of Widmanstätten figures.1 ALLOYS OF ALUMINUM WITH COPPER The most accurate determination f the solid solubility, of copper in aluminum seems to be that by Dix and Richardson,2 whose results are represented in Fig. 1. According to this work, aluminum dissolves 5.6 weight per cent of copper at 548°, and less than one per cent at room temperature. Judging from the constitutional diagram, this solid solution on cooling tends to precipitate the compound CuAl2, and this conclusion has been confirmed experimentally by Schmid and Wassermann .3

THE Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic prob-lems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segrega-tion. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute con-centration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, diffusion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions alumimum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segre-gate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

THIS paper gives a short review of the installation for and the use of gas, as a. fuel, at the Anaconda Reduction Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Before putting in gas tile fuels used were pulverized coal, lump coal, coke distillate and oil. These fuels are now almost entirely eliminated. For nearly fifty years bituminous coals from Wyoming and Montana fields had been used. These coals were of a good grade, analyzing 11,300 B.t.u. and having an ash content of 12 per cent. When hydro-electric power replaced steam-driven equipment, the coal requirements were reduced; and, on account of improvements in metallurgy and/ or in furnace design, the quantity was lessened. Later, oil and distillate were introduced and used in some of the operations. All of these things tended toward the lessening of the amount of coal used, and had it not been for the increase in the size of the plant, the tonnage used would have been small when the change was made to gas.

THE present milling operations of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co. consist- of flotation of oxidized minerals from siliceous ores of the Tintic Mining district, Utah. As the lead, silver, and gold minerals that give the ores economic value are almost entirely oxidized; their successful flotation has necessitated the solution of many new problems. Laboratory effort resulted in the selection of a, natural float for the oxidized minerals. 'By "natural float," I mean that no reagent was added to produce a sulfide film on the osidized minerals before or while subjecting them to flotation operations. As compared to methods involving sulfide filming, the natural float was selected because it promised successful treatment of a larger variety, of ores without change in quantity or kind of reagents, as well as a better economic balance between metal recovery and concentration ratio. In explanation, I can, state that with sulfide filming, the efficiency of the method decreases rapidly with increase of hydrated, iron osides in the ore, whereas with the natural float the same effect has not been noted. Evidence shows that although sulfidizing can produce greater metal recoveries, it yields a concentrate so much lower in grade that no advantage results.

MANY MISUNDERSTANDINGS have arisen regarding -Al the purchase by the Government of 24,000,000 oz. of domestically produced silver annually for the next four years at a price of 64 1/2c. to the producer. Some editorials have an¬nounced rather sarcastically that be¬cause of the strong western silver bloc in Congress, the Administration is paying a bonus of approximately $22,000,000 to a few large silver produc¬ers of the West, the amount being figured on the total purchase of about 100,000,000 oz. and the difference between the Government price and the world price for silver. Actually the Government will make a profit on this purchase, due to seigniorage, of something over $60,000,000. The 96,000,000 oz. of silver, for which the producers will receive approximately $62,000,000, will be produced in association with at least $100,000,000 worth of lead, zinc, copper and gold; the greater part of this $162,000,000 worth of metal will be produced at little profit to the mining companies, as will be shown later, because of the low prices for lead, copper and zinc. This amount of money will be spent largely for labor and supplies, thus greatly relieving the national burden of unemployment. Certainly, western mining, in the purchase of this silver, is not victimizing the Federal Government.

LEACHING in place at Cananea began in the 1920's on a limited scale. The first plants were small wooden boxes located underground in the Capote and Oversight mines, and output was low. Scrap iron was used as precipitant. Later several other small plants were started up. Leaching was limited entirely to underground areas, and production remained low. The Veta precipitating plant, the first on a larger scale, was put into operation in the late 1920's. After a period of intermittent service it was rebuilt in 1946 and has since been running continuously. In 1943 work on the Colorada open pit was started. This produced 40 million tons of waste, which averaged 0.20 pct capper. When these dumps had aged a few years it was decided to leach them on a large scale, and after considerable research and investigation a leaching system of pumps and pipelines was laid out and installed. At the same time the Ron-quillo precipitation plant was built to treat the copper solutions from the pit dumps. This plant started operation in March 1953. Leaching areas consist of the Colorada pit dumps and various mined out and caved underground stopes. The principal mineral, chalcocite, leaches readily in a weak sulfuric acid solution containing ferric iron. Enough pyrite is contained in the areas to produce an acid-ferric iron solution strong enough to dissolve the copper. Each area is studied to determine the best method of distributing the water over it and the best method of collecting the copper-bearing solutions after leaching has taken place. Water is generally distributed by means of ponds, ditches, and sprays. Spraying has proved the best method of spreading the water evenly; however, in a dry climate some water is lost through evaporation. After passing through the leachable material the solution is collected underground by dams and bulkheads and on surface by dams. An effort is made to give the maximum storage capacity practicable.

THE Columbia Steel Corporation, organized in 1922, and taken over by the United States Steel Corporation on Feb. l, 1930, is operating one blast furnace at Ironton, Utah, which was started on April 30, 1924, and is producing approximately 14,000 tons of pig iron per month. Half of the pig iron produced is basic iron and is used in its own plants at Pittsburg and Torrance, Cal. The ore for the blast furnace is shipped from Desert Mound, Utah, near Cedar City, in the southern part of the' State, approximately 231 miles from Iroaton. The ore is a hematite, disseminated with magnetite, the chemical analysis showing approximately 12 to 20 per cent magnetite, and under the micro- scope the ore has the appearance of a magnetite.

THE copper concentrator of the Braden Copper Co. is at Sewell, Chile, on the western flank of the main Cordillera of the Andes, at an air distance of approximately 50 miles southeast of Santiago, the capital of Chile. The region is mountainous and space is at a premium because of the rough terrain and the danger of snowslides. The ore, a porphyry copper, is mined by a block-caving method in the El Teniente mine. It is hauled to the crushing plant, a distance of 2.6 miles, through a tunnel because of the severe climatic conditions. The usual large, coarsely set, primary reduction machines found in many ore-treating plants are not required because of the mining method employed and the limiting 12-in. spacing of the grizzlies at the head of each ore pass in the mine. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the numerous improvements made in the crushing section of this large flotation concentrator during the past 15 years to increase the efficiency of the plant and to raise the daily output from around 20,000 to 30,000 tons. The reader should keep in mind that all changes were made within the existing building because of the limited space and the high cost of the heavy mill construction required to withstand the snow loads. The present plant, as well as the former, operates on a 24-hr, 7 days a week basis. FORMER PLANT The crushing plant commenced operations at its present site in 1921, the main equipment being No. 7 1/2 gyratories, followed by 48-in. horizontal Symons disk crushers. Fines were removed by 1-in. stationary grizzlies ahead of each unit. In 1924 a third stage of crushing was provided by the addition of 55 1/2-in. rolls in open circuit. During 1925, the Symons disks were replaced by 73 1/2-in. rolls. All the rolls were changed to closed circuit, with elevators and screens to give a final product of 9 pct plus 3-mesh. The flowsheet of a typical crushing section of this period is shown in Fig I. The ore was withdrawn from a common bin serving the five crushing sections in the plant by means of any number up to six 36-in. wide-apron feeders, which discharged onto a common conveyor belt. This conveyor was equipped with a magnetic head pulley and the crusher attendant was stationed near the discharge end to pick out pieces of mine timber that might be in the ore. The ore was discharged over a 1 3/4-in. spaced bar grizzly and the oversize of this grizzly was crushed by a No. 7 1/2 McCully gyratory crusher set at 1 3/4-in. opening on the closed side. The grizzly undersize joined the gyratory discharge and was conveyed to a set of 73 1/2 by 20-in. Garfield rolls set at I in. These rolls operated in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and two vibrating screens placed in parallel.
