One of the most important questions that arises in ore estimation can be stated as follows: What is the error when one extends the grade of a sample to a certain volume? The theory of regionalized variables, with the concept of extension variance, provides a response to that crucial question for any kind of sample extended to any volume. For the usual "extensions" encountered in current mining practice, some simple results can be derived from that theory which was initiated by Dr. G. Matheron. These results have been applied to a stratiform lead-zinc deposit for which several estimations of grade, tonnage and related precision have been made for a series of grid sizes such as might be used in a progressive exploration program.

R. R. Knobler and F. E. Albertson—Following the testwork done by Thunaes and Spedden, a Sullivan deck plant was built for the Colquiri mill. This plant started to operate in April 1945 and continues in successful operation. Since May 1950 the Colquiri mill has operated with a completely revamped flowsheet at a rate of 1000 tons per day. The old Sullivan deck section was retained with this new flowsheet. The "slime plant" in Colquiri consists of one 12-cell Denver No. 18-Sp. Sub-A flotation machine, one 16-ft and one 12-ft hydroseparator, six five-deck Sullivan-frames and six shaking tables for cleaning up the Sullivan deck concentrates, as well as 12 Deister plus three Plat-O tables on which the fine sands, which are not treated on the S-decks, are concentrated. Only —325-mesh fines are treated on the Sullivan decks. The combined hydroseparator overflows are fed to the S-decks. From 1946 to 1949, i.e. with the "old" flowsheet and an average mill feed of 800 tons per day an average of 45 tons per day was treated on four Sullivan rougher frames. The two additional frames were used as cleaners. At times, up to 90 and 120 tons of slimes were treated successfully on this Sullivan deck installation. The average operating data for the S-deck section in Colquiri for the year 1949 were as follows: The tests reported in this paper indicated a tin recovery of 42 pct. The actual plant results for 1949 show a 54 pct tin recovery from the Sullivan decks. The total average quantity of tin produced from the S-deck section in 1949 was 15 tons of tin per month. This corresponds to 3 pct of the total mill recovery. The difference between the 6 pct overall recovery-increase expected after the tests in 1943 and the actual plant results given for 1949 is explained as follows. Marquard—The problem of the automatic control of a grinding-classification circuit is not nearly as simple as has been indicated and it cannot be universally solved through the application of this device. The sound emanating from a ball mill such as the metallic clink of the balls against the liners can at times be misleading. The fact that the sound level due to the balls hitting the liners may be at a minimum does not necessarily mean that the mill is properly loaded. I have in mind an ore we treat that has a soft talcy gangue. The soft fluffy nature of this material makes the sound from the ball mill a most misleading parameter that is worthless as a means for controlling the amount of ore fed to the mill. In every milling plant there are transportation lags due to the time it takes the ore to travel from the mill bins to the ball mill. In many plants there may be several different transportation lags due to varying distances of bins from ball mill. These transportation lags can most seriously affect the operation of a controller. It has been found that under many circumstances the transportation lags can be so bad as to cause the controller to hunt seriously. Hunting can and in many cases does become so serious as to render automatic control impossible because of the surges it causes. While it is possible to compensate for this type of lag, this apparatus does not lend itself readily to accomplish the required compensation. Further, if there are groups of bins at various distances from the ball mill, compensation for one may not be sufficient or may be too great for another. Each milling plant presents a separate problem. The apparatus as presently described does not appear sufficiently flexible to accomplish this. THE 140th meeting of the Institute will be held in the Engineering societies Building, 'New York, Feb.: 16-19, and one of the most important features, one which cannot be reduced to text in the TRANSACTIONS, will be the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new friends, to talk things over -to orient one's self in these troublous .times. There will be daily get-together luncheons for all, luncheons and dinners for specialized groups, an informal dance, the annual reception and banquet, and a smoker. And such a smoker! It starts with dinner at .dinnertime, shows signs of cabaret, turns smoker, and then goes entertainment-all for the price of one. This year one can stay long after 11 o'clock-there will be time and opportunity to amble around and meet everyone present. The formal program is rapidly rounding into shape. The annual business meeting will -be held on Tuesday morning and the banquet will be at the Commodore. The four Divisions and the various, Technical Committees are arranging their sessions. and scheduling for these a long list of significant papers. A .feature of the meeting will be a number of round tables on timely subjects.

AT A meeting of the Boston Local Section of the Institute, on Oct. 3, approval was voted to the work done by its representatives on the Committee opposing the passage of a bill by the, Massachusetts Legislature to license engineers. The report is as follows: The Joint Committee on Licensing of Engineers, which included a Committee of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers and representatives of seven other societies,* submitted to the members of the respective societies, on Jan. 8, 1921, a report in which it was stated that on Jan. 4, 1921, a petition was filed in the Legislature of Massachusetts by the Boston Chapter of the American Association of Engineers accompanied by a bill to provide for the registration of professional engineers and land surveyors. EVERY producer of crude oil knows what is meant by the Rule or Law of Capture. It means that the ultimate ownership of a migratory substance such as oil is not determined until that substance is reduced to physical possession. Unless, therefore, the producer moves quickly to capture his share from the common pool, he may lose to any neighbor who is drilling and producing more rapidly than he a portion of the oil originally underlying his property. And there is no recourse open to him if his property is so drained. Under this rule it is obvious that the owner of an oil property, if he is to protect his' ownership, must be governed in his development and production policies by the activities of his neighbor rather than by his own business requirements. He must drill as densely and as fast as the other operators in the field or lose part of the oil to which he should be entitled.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C. Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity, ' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

The high-temperature properties of a 1 Cr-Mo-V forging steel are described. A series of controlled heat treatments was designed to delineate the effects of austenitizing and tempering treatments, temile strength, and grain size on such properties. Studies indicate that the mechanical properties and their varlations under creep can be described by the initial metallurgical structures and their changes droPirzg exposure, particulavly the carbide reactions. Such structures are described and correlated with the mechanical properties. FOR many years the large steam turbine industry has relied on the 1 Cr-Mo-V type forging steel for critical applications. Because of its adequate heat resistance and relative economy, it is currently in use in the temperature range up to about 1050" to 1075°F. Attempts to understand the large property variations attainable in this steel involve the structural modifications due to the wide latitude in its heat treatment. The heat treatment essentially involves a two-step process which includes solution-ing of carbides in the austenite range followed by a suitable tempering treatment below the critical to adjust the level of properties. The latter step is referred to as "secondary hardening" and is basically an ordinary aging reaction involving carbides. In the commercial heat treatment of large components of such steel, homogenizing and stress-relief anneals may be included and have some importance in determining subsequent properties. Several studies of the engineering properties of this steel as a function of transformation micro-structure have been reported.1 3 However, in this steel the carbide reactions, which are a function of composition and heat treatment, appear to be the property-controlling factor rather than the micro-structure defined as a transformation product. Thus, the tempering resistance of this type of alloy steel is mainly a function of the size and distribution of alloy carbides.4 However, it is also necessary to consider the stability of the microstructure and the effect of dynamic carbide reactions on subsequent properties. It is the purpose of this paper to show the interdependence of properties and corresponding structures, particularly carbide reactions, developed for a limited set of controlled heat-treatment conditions applied to 1 Cr-Mo-V steel. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The material for this work came from a large production forging whose chemical composition is shown in Table I. The property data accumulated on this steel as a function of heat treatment were room-temperature tensile and smooth- and notch-bar creep rupture at 1050°F (notch geometry: shank diameter = 0.357 in., depth = 50 pct, radius = 0.005 in.). To achieve controlled structural variations the temperature and time of both austenitizing and tempering were varied in a manner to produce a series of eight steels each at one of two grain sizes and one of two hardness levels in proper combination for valid comparisons. This will be clear upon examination of Table I. Structural studies involved the use of optical and electron microscopy as well as X-ray and selected-area electron diffraction. To reveal the nature of carbide precipitations, electrolytic extraction techniques were used with subsequent analysis of the residue by X-ray diffraction. Weight losses of the steel specimens during electrolysis were measured and successive chemical fractionations of the residues were applied and checked by X-ray examination. The details of fine structural distributions, morphologies, and crystallography of the precipitates as well as dislocation distributions were investigated by examining in the electron microscope three common types of preparation. a) Relief Replicas. Mechanically polished sections were etched in 2 pct nital, replicated with a nitrocellulose film, which was shadowed by chromium vapor deposited at a glancing angle of 20 deg. b) Extraction Replicas. A thin film of carbon was vapor-deposited on the polished and etched surface. The carbon films were then etched off and gathered on electron-microscope supporting grids. The carbides left imbedded in the carbon replica in their original distribution were then examined crystallo-graphically by selected-area electron diffraction. c) Thin Films. Specimens were mechanically ground and polished down to a thickness of 0.001 to 0.003 in. Final thinning was done electrolytically in a "chrome-acetic" electrolyte. When holes began to appear in the foil, the voltage was interrupted and applied in several 1-sec bursts. Sections of the foil between holes were thin enough to pass a 100-kv electron beam that carries an image.

GRAIN boundary migration in V-shaped thin specimens of high purity silver was studied. Each specimen contained two crystals having the relative orientation: (111)A/(111)B; (ll0)A/(101)B. The boundary between these two crystals varied between a continuous curved and an alternating two plane interface. The plane interfaces were oriented parallel to (101)A/(011B) and (121)A/(211)B. Traces of these planes are shown in Fig. 1. Evidently the two plane interface, although of higher area, comprises lower total interface energy than the average curved boundary it replaced. The plane boundaries were found to move at 650 °C to consume the broad segment of the V opposite to the direction of interface area and energy decrease. On investigation, using the thermal etching technique of Hendrickson and Machlin,1 it was found that the outer grain contained 8.3x108 more dislocations per cm" than the grain at the apex of the V. Consequently, the boundary moved to decrease the strain energy associated with the difference in dislocation density across the boundary. The rates of motion of specific {110} and {112} boundaries were measured during interrupted anneals at 650°C by referring the position of the boundaries to each other and a fiducial line on the specimen surface. The measured rates of motion are 0.075 and 0.025 mm per hr for the {110} and {112} boundaries, respectively. Plots of grain boundary motion vs time of annealing show straight lines with little deviation of data points from these lines.

THE Iron and Steel Division and the Institute of Metals Division are laying plans for a rousing meeting the week beginning Sept. 21 in the land of the bean and the cod-at Boston. The two divisions are collaborating with the American Welding Society, the American Society for Steel Treating, and the Iron and Steel Division of the A. S. M. E., to have technical sessions of widespread interest and social affairs that will compare with the best of previous years. In connection with the meetings an exhibition of production and testing equipment, heat-treating equipment, furnaces, welding equipment, and metal products will be held on Commonwealth Pier all week, where those attending may see the latest developments in the field of their own work.

Most metallurgists are well acquainted with the contributions already made to the study of metals by the use of X-rays. On the one hand, the radiographic method is constantly becoming of increasing importance as a nondestructive testing procedure, while on the other hand the techniques of X-ray diffraction have made important contributions to the fundamental knowledge in studies of phase diagrams, stress conditions, and so forth. A new, and as yet insufficiently appreciated, tool exists in the application of microradiography to alloy structures. This new procedure in many respects bears the same relation to microscopic investigations as does macroradiography to the gross inspection of metal surfaces. However, where macroradiography is used ordinarily to determine the soundness of the metal structure, this new method can be used not only to investigate micro-un-soundness but also to examine the distribution of the constituent elements within the body of the alloy. When combined with the normal procedures of microscopy, this offers a technique of great potential power. It is intended in this paper to present a few examples of copper-base alloys demonstrating the additional knowledge obtained from the microradiographic method. The detection of micro-unsoundness is demonstrated in Fig. I for a sample of cartridge brass as cast. The sample ap- peared quite sound when viewed under the microscope, but in reality was thickly populated with minute voids. This application of the method conforms in every way to conventional large-scale radiography and has been used to facilitate production of metal for vacuum devices.' The true potentialities of the technique are revealed by comparison of Figs, 2a and 2b, which are respectively a photomicrograph and a microradiograph of a cast alloy of 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb. The remarkable difference in appearance provides some concept of the additional information this method may yield when used as an auxiliary to microscopic studies. Fig. 2a shows two phases of the copper-tin system plus segregated_ lumps of lead. Fig. 2b, on the other hand, shows with exceptional clarity the actual dendritic growth of the metal crystals during solidification. The practice of microradiography depends upon the laws of absorption of X-rays. This subject has been reviewed thoroughly in recent papers,l,2,3 but for clarity a brief resume will be given here. As is well known, when a beam of X-rays is transmitted through a, layer of homogeneous material, the intensity is reduced according to the relation: where Il is the transmitted intensity, I0 is the incident intensity, µ1 is the linear absorption coefficient of the material, t1 is the thickness of the material.

Mechanical properties of the eutectic between CoAl and cobalt were measured over a range of- temnperatures and strain rates for a variety of microstructures produced by directional solidification and by thermo-mechanical processing. Directional solidification led to rodlike, lamellar, and irregular microstructures. The unusually high volume fraction of the cobalt-rich rods and the lurge spacing of the rods were explained by the phase diagram. The hot-worked structure consisted of fibers of COAL in a cobalt-rich matrix. The roonl- tevlperature strength of the uvrought material increased with decreasing grain size but the 1000°C strength decreased with decreasing pain size. At high temperatures the directionally solidified tnaterial was stronger and less strain-rate-sensitice than the hot-rolled material. The fine-grained hot-worked ma-terial became superplastic at high temperatures, with tensile elongations greater than 850 pct, while at root temperature this material was ductile and impact-resistant because of the ductile matrix. Fracture occurred in the directionally solidified material at elevated temperatures by inter phase separation and at roorn temperature by cracks in the intermetallic phase. Growth of these cracks was impeded by the ductile cobalt-rich phase. It was found that the CoAl intermetallic remains ordered at elevated temperatures. DIRECTIONAL solidification of eutectic alloys has been used to produce structures consisting of parallel rods or lamellae. Although the spacing of the phases depends on the growth rate, it has been observed to be of the order of 1 µ in many eutectics. A strong intermetallic phase has been used to reinforce a ductile matrix in the rod eutectic A1-Al3Ni and the lamellar eutectic Al-Al2cu.1 The microstructure of the eutectics A1-A13Ni and A1-A12Cu remained aligned after samples of these alloys were exposed to temperatures just below their melting points for long times. Stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures makes directionally solidified eutectics a candidate for high-temperature applications. Recently Thompson4 has developed the Ni-NiMo eutectic containing 40 pct NiMo lamellae, giving a tensile strength superior to nickel-base superalloys. Unfortunately, this eutectic oxidizes rapidly at elevated temperatures. By mechanically processing a two-phase structure, one may reach strengths as high as 700,000 psi, as demonstrated by drawn pearlite.5 In this case the strengthening mechanism was thought to be related to the fine substructure formed during deformation.5 However, a heavily worked structure may recrystallize and coarsen at elevated temperatures. Some worked eutectics such as Al-Al2Cu,6 Pb-Sn,7 and Sn-Bi7 have shown unusually large elongations in tension when tested at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon of large extension, called "superplasticity", was related to the fine grain size of wrought two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures. A mode of deformation of "superplastic" material has been shown to be grain boundary sliding,' which has also been observed during creep of polycrystalline materials.9 The Co-A1 system was chosen for this investigation after examining the phase diagrams of binary eutectics." The high melting point of 1400°C, the aluminum content which was expected to give oxidation resistance, and the properties of the intermetallic CoAl were the chief factors influencing this choice. This eutectic consists of a mixture of the intermetallic CoAl and a cobalt-rich solid solution. The intermetallic CoAl has a large range of solubility and a CsCl structure." From the similarity between CoAl and NiAl one would expect CoAl to be ordered at elevated temperatures; however, specific heat measurements" show a transition at 800°C. West-brookL2 has measured the hot hardness of CoAl and found a rapid decrease in hardness above 600°C. The tensile properties and stress rupture properties of as-cast CoAl-Co eutectic were measured by Ashbrook and wallace13 who report a room-temperature tensile elongation of less than 1 pct. I) EXPERIMENTAL A) Sample Preparation. Experimental materials were prepared by directional solidification, by hot working, and by powder processing. The starting materials were electrolytic 99.9 pct pure cobalt and 99.99 pct pure aluminum. 1) Directional Solidification. A vertical Bridgman apparatus heated by induction was used to directionally solidify cylindrical ingots $ in. in diam and 5 in. long. The apparatus was first evacuated and then an argon atmosphere was introduced to retard evaporation. The ingots were contained in an alumina crucible inside a graphite susceptor that rested on a movable water-cooled base. The base was lowered out of the induction coil at a constant rate. Eight of the ingots were solidified using a drive rate of 2.5 cm per hr, two of the ingots at 1.2 cm per hr, and one ingot at 10 cm per hr. The eutectic composition Co 10 wt pct A1 was used in all but one ingot which had the composition of the stoichiometric CoAl intermetallic, Co 32 wt pct Al. 2) Mechanical Processing. At 1000°C the eutectic Co 10 wt pct A1 is a mixture of an intermetallic phase, Co 21 wt pct Al, and a cobalt-rich phase, Co 5 wt pct Al.10 These phases differ from the stoichiometric CO 32 wt pct A1 and pure cobalt because of the large solubility of this eutectic at elevated temperatures." Four rectangular slab ingots, 4 by 1 by 12 in. high, of Co 10 wt pct Al, Co 5 wt pct Al, Co 21 wt pct Al, and Co 32 wt pct A1 were cast for hot rolling. This is the more appropriate, since Mr. Morse has mentioned me by name, and has cited my "Review of the Russell Process,"* so that silence on my part might be taken as indicating an assent which I cannot give. On the first page of his paper Mr. Morse says that the " goingback " of chlorination was " the only difficulty encountered at Aspen," and adds that he has " never seen any explanation " of the cause. IT was but a few years ago that the mining engineer, and his confreres, the civil, mechanical and electrical engineer, were stigmatized by politicians of the parish? pump variety as advance agents of unprincipled exploiters of backward countries. Today he is recognized as a most important missionary of civilization in opening up new territory to contribute its mineral wealth and incidentally its other resources for the needs of mankind. An engineer, it is now conceded, is not only a benefactor of the world at large, but is a primary factor in the betterment of conditions of the inhabitants of those countries developed by his skill and indomitable courage-for courage is requisite in pioneering and his indefatigable industry. The engineer will, I believe, become a real "Ambassador of Good Will," when the slow-consenting academic mind realizes as it must that beneficent deeds are more enduring and more convincing than mere gestures of professed amity.
