At the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that time impending. The simplified flow sheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.l The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopy-rite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow ,would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particles, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrassment, the increase of capacity required. M. Hansen—This paper certainly is an interesting study. Although I have not had too much experience in the powder metallurgical methods of studying phase equilibria, I would like to say the following concerning the interpretations of the results obtained: 1. The existence of a zirconium-rich eutectic having a melting point close to 950°C and containing approximately 5 pct beryllium is well established. 2. Undoubtedly sintering of the original compacts (i.e., without repressing and resintering at 1350°C) resulted in a condition being far from equilibrium, even in the low-melting point zircon-rich region where undissolved zirconium particles have been observed. This means that only partial reaction between the component powders has taken place. 3. In preparing and handling powder mixtures for pressing and sintering, we have found that with powders differing considerably in density, and also in particle size, separation in layers of different composition may occur. This means that a concentration gradient would exist within such samples. This phenomenon may, at least to some extent, account for the difference in microstructure of the top and bottom regions of some of the sintered samples. If this is the case, density figures for some of the nominal compositions would not represent actual densities of those mixtures. 4. Fig. 1 shows that the low densities of mixtures with 40 and 60 pct beryllium sintered at 1350°C are changed to much higher densities if the products sintered at 1100°C are repressed and resintered at 1350°C, whereby an approach toward equilibrium takes place. This would mean that the low density and growth in volume is due to nonequilibrium conditions. If this is true, would it be justified, then, to conclude that "the remarkable growth of the alloys in the vicinity of 40 to 60 pct Be indicates the formation of a high-melting point phase, probably accompanied by a considerable change in volume due to a large alteration of the crystal structure from that of the original compounds"? If some compound formation has taken place already during the first sintering at 950" to 1350°C, more compound would be formed by repressing and re-sintering of the 1100" samples. This treatment, however, results in higher, rather than lower, densities. In general, the density-composition curve of alloy systems containing one or more intermediate phases is characterized by a more or less defined contraction (decrease in specific volume, increase in density) over the "theoretical" density. Does not discrepancy exist between the two statements that "growth of the alloy indicates the formation of a high-melting phase . . ." and "even at 1350°C, no indications of sintering have been observed"? 5. I am not sure that the explanation given for the fact that fig. 4 did not reveal as much eutectic as the top portions of the mixture with 2 pct Be, is correct. The density of the melt containing only 5 pct Be or even perhaps less, is not too much different from that of the nominal composition. The reason might be also that there was already some separation of the components in the pressed compact. 6. I do not understand why the microstructure of the bottom regions of the compact with 5 pct Be (fig. 6) is so different from that of the top regions (fig. 5). The compact was melted on sintering at 1100°C. Its composition lies close to the eutectic point. There should be at least some lamellar structure in the bottom regions too; otherwise, the composition of top and bottom must have been very different after sintering, because the eutectic is said to extend as far as the composition ZrBe2. In case the white and gray areas of fig. 6 are both gamma, and the black areas undissolved zirconium, this composition would be close to the phase coexisting with zirconium, that is, ZrBe2, according to the hypothetical diagram, or a compound richer in zirconium. 7. Figs. 9 and 10 are not mentioned in the text. 8. The great difference in microstructure of the composition 20 pct Be of figs. 8 and 14 on one side and fig. 15 on the other side proves that sintering at 950" and 1100°C results only in partial reaction of the powers. 9. The mixture with 60 pct Be (fig. 19) seems to consist of two phases, rather than one phase, one interspersed in a matrix of another. 10. The statement that the eta phase "may be an intermetallic compound or the product of a peritectic or monotectic reaction" seems to be misleading, because the product of a peritectic or monotectic reaction in this region of the system must be an intermetallic compound. 11. If there is some solid solubility of Be in alpha and beta-Zr, it would be expected to be higher in beta-Zr (b.c.c.) than in alpha-Zr (h.c.p.). The temperature of the polymorphic transformation of zirconium then would be lowered, rather than increased. In accordance with this, Battelle has found that the transformation point of titanium is decreased by beryllium. 12. In case the phases present in alloys with 80, 90, and 95 pct Be are identical (which appears to be correct), it is striking that the relative amounts of both phases (eta and beryllium) are not too different within this wide range of composition. ENGINEERS are the key men in our war program today. Upon the technical knowledge and skill of the engineer and upon his administrative and executive abilities rests the entire success for the production of vital materials of the war. Naturally the work load of the engineering examining unit of the U. S. Civil Service Commission has increased greatly since our active participation in the war. At present, over 550 separate requests for certification of eligibles are received by the engineering unit per week. These represent more than a fourth of the total requests received for personnel by the Commission's central office at Washington and represent a recruitment work load of three to four times that carried by the whole Commission previous to January 1940. These requests represent a minimum of a thousand vacancies to be filled each week, while an average week will produce, at present, approximately 1400 vacancies and a weekly maximum may approach well over 2000 vacancies.

MINE executives, as a rule, have always been willing to adopt new ideas of operation, or to listen to proposals which might increase the effectiveness of their enterprise, more especially so if they could be shown how definite results might be attained by introducing any conception suggested. In these days of high wages, high cost of supplies, and high taxes, operators are even more inclined to accord consideration to innovations or improvements, and many go so far as to employ men to conduct special investigations and make studies for the purpose of advancing production. The practical application of mud-laden fluids in wells has been the subject of many papers.' However, there seems to have been little investigation of what actually happens when mud-laden fluids are applied to a loose porous sand. The assumption is that the fluids penetrate the sands and that there is some plastering action. The degree of penetration and the relation of plastering action to wall stability is not generally known. This paper describes a series of experiments made in an attempt to observe, in laboratory apparatus, the action of mud-laden fluids under conditions simulating those to be found in a well. For the purposes of this discussion all fluids containing solid matter in suspension are mud-laden fluids. Series I: Penetration of the Pores of Uncemented Sands The subject of the penetration of porous formations by water is discussed in detail in Water-Supply Paper No. 67 of the U. S. Geological Survey. No attempt was made to repeat the experiments described therein. The results of the first experiment of this series are given simply to show the capacity of the apparatus used. The conditions in this first experiment were maintained throughout the remainder of this and the second series, except where noted. The experiments of Mills, McCoy, and others on subsurface flows, adjustments, migrations, etc., deal with the oil, water or gas within the porous beds.V he experiments described herein deal with the conditions immediately surrounding the bore hole.

This paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the heading-and-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading. In mines, the tunnels, drifts, cross-cuts, adits, etc., are usually of small diameter, hence the driving of headings applies to completed tunnels in mining-work, except, of course, in cases like drainage-tunnels and main entries leading into coal-mines, where conditions call for tunnels of large diameter, approximating those driven for railway-service. In building aqueducts the tunnels are driven from 6 to 8 ft. in diameter up to 15 or 20 ft., while in railway-service the dimensions vary from 18 to 30 ft. in diameter. There is no department of rock-excavation so difficult as that of heading-driving. This work also belongs to the most expensive class in rock-excavation. A heading is driven directly in the solid. There are no lines of lesser resistance towards which to direct the energy of the blast, but the material must be blown out by main force. The completion of the heading simplifies all the rest of the work of excavation. It is easy, for instance, to enlarge a heading either from above, below or on the sides, by breaking towards the open face through holes approximately at right angles to the axis of the heading; or the enlargement sometimes takes place by holes driven outside of the heading running approximately parallel with it, the rock

Changes in existing airway and fan-installation conditions offer the most common opportunities for effecting economical operation of mine-ventilating systems, but the largest possibilities for securing this result lie in the original design of the main airways for efficient service. Formulas, and charts for their graphical solution, are presented herewith for the determination of the elements of airways design when the conditions of service are known or may be roughly approximated. Although the analyses are made with particular reference to metal-mine airways, there is no essential difference between main airways in metal and coal mines, and the methods presented are applicable to both. Little attention is paid to designing airways for maximum economy in the ventilation of metal mines. Most of the openings used as main airways are originally designed and used for transportation and other operating purposes. Even where openings are made primarily for ventilation, the possibility of their future use for other operating purposes, or even custom alone, usually results in the selection of a size and shape similar to those of existing openings. Natural conditions, such as heavy ground, often seriously limit the size of opening that can be maintained without excessive expense; and various operating factors, such as velocity limitations on traveling roads, often dictate size requirements in excess of those required for economy in ventilation only. In metal mines the main airways are, as a rule, too small rather than too large for economic service, with the general result that the quantities in circulation are often less than the mine's proper requirements over long periods, even though excessive amounts of power are applied in an effort to remedy conditions. Increasing the area of an airway increases the cost for excavation and lining practically proportionately but at the same time affects a very rapid decrease in power requirements. The balancing of these two factors of the expense to give a minimum total yearly operating cost for ventilation is mainly a matter of proper original design of the main airways of the mine, since the large volumes handled through these parts of the system involve large power costs and thus present opportunities for effecting large savings through proper design. The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.

THE BULOLO gold-dredging operations were described at some length by Frank W. Griffin at the Oct. 11 meeting of the San Francisco Section. This enterprise is on the island of New Guinea, about 1800 miles north of Sydney, Australia. The area in which the present placers exist originally was German territory but later the location was taken over by Australians. Gold was discovered in 1923 by prospectors who required 8 to 9 days to pack into the country over severe mountain trails. In 1926 a rich discovery was made on Edie Creek and in 1927 the deposit on the Bulolo River was discovered.

A review of the literature on the reduction of cassiterite showed that scarcely any progressive changes were made in the methods of reducing cassiterite until within the last two decades, and that during that period many improvements in the metallurgy of tin have taken place. Since 1914 the world's consumption of tin has increased considerably, resulting in the exploitation of primary tin deposits such as the Bolivian lode, which has become an important source of tin. On account of the low tin content of Bolivian ore, and the presence of objectionable impurities of the reduced tin, the smelting of this ore and the refining of the tin has changed considerably from the methods formerly used. A comparative study of the methods of smelting cassiterite concentrates suggested that an investigation be planned so as to determine what factors effect the extraction of tin from its ores by reduction with carbon. The first part of the experimental work was the determination of whether roasted cassiterite concentrates can be reduced by carbon without the use of flux, and the reduced pellets of tin be collected into a single mass separate from the dry gangue residue. The second part of the experimental work was a comparison of the effect of variations of the different factors on the smelting of roasted cassiterite concentrates: first, the effect of varying the composition of the slag; second, the effect of varying the amount of reducing agent; third, the effect of varying the relative amount of the resulting slag; and fourth, the effect of different kinds of reducing agents. Review of Literature Experiments on the smelting of Bolivian tin concentrates were made by James P. Gill in 1920 in the metallurgical laboratory of the School of Mines, and submitted as a graduate thesis. The results of these tests are fully reported as they are preliminary to the experimental part of this paper, and also because they have not been published. THIS paper deals with the flotation of the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride) and of two associated gangue minerals, calcite and quartz. The aim of the investigation was to produce "acid-grade" fluorite, which must contain less than one per cent of silica. Several reagents are used successfully in practice for floating fluorite from its ores. Oleic acid is the most widely used collector, usually at temperatures above 60°C, with sodium silicate as a dispersant for quartz and quebracho or tannin to depress calcite. Sulphides (e.g., galena) are often removed first by xanthate flotation. Many investigators23 report results in which more than 80 pct of the fluorite is recovered in a concentrate assaying 96 pct or more of fluorite and less than I pct of silica. This investigation was undertaken with the intention of floating the gangue, which is the minor constituent of the ore, from the fluorite. Hence emphasis was first placed on the cationic compounds that float quartz. No satisfactory separations were obtained in this way, and other reagents were investigated to discover whether these were more effective than oleic acid in floating fluorite from quartz in the usual way. The first part of the paper describes experiments with several long-chain collectors available commercially. Most of this work has been by captive-bubble and cylinder flotation tests, with some batch tests in a flotation machine. The second part describes the use of sodium cetyl sulphate as a collector for fluorite and includes laboratory tests and extension of the work to batch tests in the flotation machine. A method for determining the adsorption of sodium cetyl sulphate on fluorite has been developed and is described. Theory of Collection by Paraffin-chain Salts It may be assumed that these compounds are adsorbed at the mineral surface in one or more of three ways outlined by Kolthoff :12 I. Exchange adsorption between lattice ions in the mineral surface and collector ions in solution. Closely related is adsorption by the collecting mechanism postulated by Taggart,17 in which there is metathesis between the collector and the mineral cation or anion. 2. Exchange adsorption between adsorbed gegen ions (p. 67, ref. 19) and collector ions in solution. 3. Adsorption of nonelectrolytes (polarnonpolar) without displacement of adsorbed ions. With cationic collectors, inorganic cations in the solution (e.g., hydrogen ion) compete with the collector ions and therefore act as depressants, while inorganic anions have the same effect with anionic collectors. weight obtained. Additives used in conjunction with salt in these slurries have included silica flour, calcium ligno-sulfonate and cellulose retarders, granular lost-circulation materials, bentonite and selected low-water-loss additives that are not significantly deteriorated by the presence of the chloride ion. In some other areas of South Texas, the salt-saturated slurries have been used quite extensively for improvement of the flow properties of slurries and attainment of better circulation characteristics at lower displacement rates. Concurrently with this property, the protection of shales and shaly sands is also realized, as well as useful retardation of the slurry. Resultant superior cementing jobs have been indicated by both communication tests and acoustic logs for bonding to pipe and formation.' In one section of Louisiana, a major oil company has been using salt-saturated API Class A cement with calcium lignosulfonate retarder for cementing through the Miocene at 9,000 to 10,000 ft. This is another of the situations where interbedding of sands and shales exists, creating difficulty in maintaining formation competency when a fresh-water slurry contacts the clay minerals of the formation. Further work has also been done in the shaly Miocene formation at 13,000 to 15,000 ft where fairly close water or gas contacts are encountered. Indications thus far are that better segregation of these various fluids is obtained by use of the saturated salt slurries because of their improved formation bonding characteristics. In addition to the properties of salt in this situation, attainment of turbulent flow at minimum displacement rates has also been accomplished by use of an additive to help provide exceptional dispersion and viscosity reduction of the slurry. Another oil company was encountering considerable expense in completing wells in Southwestern Louisiana due to extensive block squeeze requirements for effective separation of zones. A very effective mud program was being used to minimize washout in the shale sections and, apparently, a nearly gauge-size hole was being obtained. However, primary cementing results with fresh-water slurries were generally poor. On a few occasions when slurry was actually circulated to the surface, large pieces of shale formation were brought out of the hole with the slurry, indicating a severely water-sensitive, sloughing formation. Inhibition of shale heaving was being accomvlished in the drilling program, and immediately indone ipon circulation of the fresh-water slurry even though it contained a low-fluid-loss additive to reduce filtrate damage in the sands. The subsequent change to salt-saturated slurry yielded 11 successful primary cement jobs out of 12, compared to the previous success ratio of practically zero. Since these were deep, high-temperature wells in the range of 13,000 ft with high-pressure zones necessitating 17.5-lb/gal fluid densities, the slurry used was API Class E cement, silica flour, weight material, retarder, salt saturation (which also reduced the amount of weight material) and maintenance of low fluid loss by use of a salt-compatible additive. Other salt slurries have been used to a limited extent in this same general area for similar problems at depths ranging from 5,000 to 17,000 ft. In the shallower wells, the cement has usually been API Class A where the salt functions as a retarder, and in the deeper wells API Class E cement is used with the additional salt advantage being its increased slurry weight and inability to dissolve salt stringers. A considerable number of squeeze jobs have also been done on older wells using the salt-saturated slurries with very good results. MID-CONTINENT In North Texas, salt-water slurries have been used for cementing the Woodbine sand, Strawn sand, KMA sand and Pettit lime. Shales surrounding these formations have created the same difficulty in obtaining separation of producing zones that has been the problem in other areas. Depths in this area range from 3,400 ft for the Strawn to 7,400 ft for the Woodbine, and concentration of salt has varied accordingly. In the deeper wells, where retardation is desired, saturated salt-water cement is used; for the shallower wells, in order to provide shorter waiting-on-cement times, the amount of salt has been 18 per cent by weight of the mixing water. Results have been excellent with no reported failures on any of the salt cement jobs; where acoustic bond logs have indicated indifferent bonds previously, they are indicating very good bonding for the salt slurries. In Oklahoma various shales of Pennsylvanian age exhibit a high degree of sloughing in the presence of fresh water, causing severe washouts above and below sand formations which it is desired to isolate. This situation exists to some degree in practically all parts of Oklahoma and includes formations of other ages such as the Wood-ford shale. For the past few years, salt-saturated cements and displacement rates as high as practical have been used as a remedy for this problem, with very good results. The Layton and Bartlesville formations are two examples of shaly sands where saturated slurries have been helpful. In one area where five wells were drilled through this type of problem shale without obtaining a satisfactory primary cement job, a change was made to salt-saturated cement preceded by a suitable chemical wash for the drilling mud involved. Acoustic bond logging indicated excellent bonding, and final completion bore out this result by being trouble-free. This type of slurry has also been used extensively on squeeze jobs where shales have been heaving around the producing formations. Predominantly, the basic slurry has been either API Class A cement or a pozzolan cement—although, as deeper wells are being drilled, the use of salt in Class E cement is also increasing. Salt cement in West Texas has been used primarily to help prevent channeling through the shales around the Delaware sand, Queens dolomite and Hope lime. Many of the shaly and dirty sands of this area are sensitive to the filtrate from a fresh-water cement. Salt at 16 to 18 per cent by weight of mixing water has been added to centent, and has been effective in controlling formation damage and communication between zones in these formations. Use of these lower salt concentrations is dictated in this area by the relatively low formation temperatures where retardation of the slurry would create unduly long waiting-on-cement times. Also, quite a bit of cementing has been done in this area using salt concentrations in the accelerating range— that is, 2 to 5 per cent by weight of water. Specifically, these concentrations have been used in coiljunction with high percentages of gel to overcome the retarding effect of the calcium lignosulfonate dispersant, although there are probably several shales where these concentrations could provide some degree of formation stability. On several occasions, the salt has also been used to lower the critical velocity or rate for turbulence with the slurry, particularly in the pozzolan cements. On wells in the Hope lime, it has usually been necessary to squeeze the shale above and below the lime to get a water-free completion. Use of salt-saturated slurries has largely eliminated this

SINCE the advent of what has been aptly called "chemical flotation," about 1920, the number and complexity of the various chemicals used in practice have increased enormously. Over 300 patents have been issued dealing exclusively with flotation reagents, and many of these embrace from two or three up to a score or more of specific compounds. The exact number of compounds actually finding a practical use in flotation would be difficult to determine, though the U. S. Bureau of Mines gives an annual list by groups.

DURING the second year of America's active participation in the war the main objectives of the petroleum refining industry were again to provide the four most important product needs for war: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for TNT production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. All other materials supplied by the petroleum industry took an inferior priority ranking, depending on the degree of essentiality. To accomplish the above objectives the industry initiated and carried on a building program during 1942 and 1943 which will put those two years down in petroleum refining history as the greatest construction years of all time, a record which will hold for decades to come. Led by an estimated total of $900,000,000 going into 100octane and contributory plant investment, it is easy to picture a total of two billion dollars and more going into additional refining-industry plant investment during 1942 and 1943, most of it privately paid for, but a substantial part covered by R.F.C. Government money financing.

ACURSORY glance through the literature on the subject reveals that the ablest minds in the land are devoting themselves to the great question of labor, of which employment is one of the fundamentals. Volumes have been written and the end is not in sight. Employment management is today about in the position that efficiency was 15 years ago. During the early days of the war, and perhaps for a year or so before, labor was plentiful. As the war progressed and Europe drew on us for munitions, employers began to compete with one another for', all, classes of labor. Labor was difficult to obtain, wages rose, the labor turnover increased, and employers began to install employment departments, welfare plans, and all sorts of schemes, but the labor efficiency dropped. As the war progressed, greater and greater production was demanded. New factors were introduced each day. The government, labor unions, industrial councils, all tended, it seemed, to make the situation almost intolerable. Wages rose to fantastic heights, the cost of living rose higher and higher, and the efficiency dropped still further.

THE prospective change in ore receipts at the Copper Queen reduction works necessitated a careful study of conditions to determine the most economical method of smelting. The first step, calculating the known, probable, and possible results, showed the economy of a unimetallurgical flow sheet f which the three pyrometallurgical stages would be roasting, reverberatory smelting, and converting. The change to "all reverb." practice, therefore, called for considerable additional roaster capacity, which could be obtained either by building additional units, or by remodelling the present units so as to give increased unit capacity. In view of the progress in roasting practice since the construction of the Copper Queen roaster plant and the heavy investment in that roaster plant, the second plan seemed to be the more desirable. The Copper Queen roaster plant consisted of twenty six-hearth, McDougall roasters, 18 ft. in diameter, equipped with cast-iron arms that originally were water cooled but now are air cooled. They have no top dry hearth and the feed is discharged through the top arch, near its periphery, by plunger feeders from two bins at opposite sides of the roaster.

ANTHRACOAL is a mixture of small particles of anthracite coal and a matrix of practically pure carbon, formed from the distillation of coal-tar pitch or other suitable bitumen. It is a hard, dense, homogeneous mass, with a silvery luster and in color varies from silvery to grayish black. When pushed from the oven, it develops only partly the fingerlike structure of coke; but, unlike coke, it has a tendency to remain in blocky masses. When struck with a hammer or passed through crushing rolls, it breaks with an irregular fracture, similar to anthracite, but with very little fines. Due to its density, anthracoal is harder, tougher, and stronger than coke. The results of a test made by the blast-furnace department, of the Bethlehem Steel Co., on two barrels of anthracoal are given in Table 1. William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.
