Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of cassiterite and fluorite with oleic acid as collector and with alizarin dyes as modifying agents were studied by means of small-scale, vacuum-flotation tests. Artificial cassiterite was prepared for these tests by high-temperature methods, especially by crystallization from borax melts.

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development. From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

THE dimensions and shapes of mine structures may at present be determined by (1) field experience, (2) structural calculations, and (3) barodynamic tests.§ None of these, however, provide information as to the stresses, their direction and distribution in a mine structure. For the design of pillars, the placing of openings relative to working places such as gangways, haulage levels, etc., this information is desirable. Photoelastic methods provide this and, while relatively new, their appli-cation in all engineering fields is assuming increasing importance. This paper, therefore, will present the method with a few applications to mining, and with sufficient reference for further study by the reader. PART I THE PHOTOELASTIC METHOD The photoelastic method of stress measurement determines the stress distribution in a two-dimensional model by optical means. It makes use of the fact that when a piece of isotropic transparent material, such as glass, celluloid, or Bakelite, is stressed and viewed in polarized** light a picture is seen which indicates by its color bands of light, or fringes, the magnitude of the stresses, their direction and their distribution.

As shown in three recent papers by the author,6,7,8 in two papers by McAdam and Mebs,9,10 and in a paper by McAdam, Mebs, and Geil,11 the technical cohesive strength of a metal, in any particular state as regards mechanical treatment and heat-treatment, cannot be represented by a single stress value, but must be represented by a diagram with the principal stresses? as coordinates. Each point on the boundary of such a diagram represents a technical cohesion limit. The technical cohesive strength thus comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits, each representing fracture under a specific stress combination. Moreover, neither the yield strengths nor the ultimate strength can be represented completely by a single stress value, but must be represented by a diagram with the principal stresses as coordinates. All combinations of the principal stresses may be classified in three groups as illustrated by Fig. I. Fig. Ia shows three typical stress combinations with no two principal stresses equal. The magnitude of each principal stress is indicated qualitatively by the length of the arrow. Arrows pointing away from the cube indicate tensile stresses; arrows pointing toward the cube indicate compressive stresses. Typical stress combinations with two principal stresses equal are illustrated in Figs. Ib and Ic. Such stress combinations would be produced by subjecting a cylinder to combinations of uniform axial and radial stresses. The uniform radial stress may be resolved into two equal principal stresses, with the mutually perpendicular directions rotatable around the axis of the cylinder. Fig. Ib shows stress combinations with S2 equal to Sa. The greatest principal stress is in the axial direction, and the stress combination tends to cause either absolute or relative increase in length.* Fig. Ia shows stress combinations with Ss equal to Sl. The greatest principal stress is in the radial direction, and the combination tends to cause either absolute or relative decrease in length. The complete representation of either technical cohesive strength, yield strength, or ultimate strength generally requires a three-dimensional diagram. When two of the principal stresses are kept equal, however, the strength of a metal may be represented by a two-dimensional diagram with the coordinates representing the axial and radial stresses.6-11 In this paper, attention will be confined almost entirely to stress combinations with two of the prin-

THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. IN view of the increasing importance of sintering in the beneficiation of iron ores preparatory to their reduction in the blast furnace, the writer believes the time is opportune for an up-to-date, though brief, discussion of the general principles of sintering, as well as a discussion of some of the recent improvements and mechanical developments that have been achieved in this industry, its present trend and future possibilities. Sintering may be defined as the agglomeration of fine mineral particles into a porous mass by incipient fusion caused by heat produced by com-bustion within the mass itself. Its first successful application, in connec-tion with the treatment of lead sulphide ores, was known as blast roasting. In this process the lead ore was given a preliminary roasting in a reverber-atory furnace, then the incandescent mass was placed in a pot with a grate and an updraft was applied. It was soon discovered that much better results were obtained by cooling the ore, moistening it, and placing it upon an incandescent layer of fuel previously placed upon a grate, and then applying the updraft blast of air until the charge was converted into a more or less agglomerated mass. The fuel was sulphur and the process one of desulphurization, which was the principal result desired. The application of downdraft to blast roasting brought about tremen-dous results; the principal one of which was that an air blast of high pressure could be passed through a layer of ore deposited on a grate, or on a grate covered by a layer of coarse porous material, without disturbing the particles of which the layer is composed. The air current is compelled to filter through the pores of the charge, whereas if the same pressure applied to the top surface of the charge with downdraft were applied to the bottom of the charge with updraft, the charge would be completely blown off the grate. Another result of reversing the draft was that a flame could readily be applied to the top surface of the charge for ignit-ing purposes.

EARLY investigations1 of the tensile properties of fcc single crystals did not reveal the easy glide region of crystals with axial orientations inside the standard stereographic triangle. With the production of high-purity metal, a region of easy glide became known1 Consequently, modern work of fcc single crystals ordinarily uses high-purity metal. In order to determine whether further purification of aluminum beyond 99.992 pct purity would result in significant alteration of the tensile properties of single-crystal specimens, metal was zone-refined and crystals grown from the purified material were compared to crystals grown from the original material. Some similar studies were made of gold and silver crystals. Aluminum. The material to be zone-refined was cast into bars 1/4 by 1/2 by 8 in. A zone, approximately 1-1/2 in. in length, was passed over each bar eighteen times at a rate of 6 in. per hr. Melting and stirring were carried out by an induction heater under a vacuum of approximately 10"5 mm Hg, the metal being held in a graphite container. he last 3 in. of each processed bar were then cut off and discarded. No quantitative determination of purity was made, but the effectiveness of the zone refining was tested by a method first suggested by Walton, Tiller, Rutter, and winegard3 depending on the relation between cell structure and impurity content. Rutter and Chalmers4 have shown that a cellular substructure is associated with the presence of impurities during solidificatibn, and have shown how solute rejection at the freezing interface can lead to such an association. Thus the observation of cells gives evidence of impurities being present. To look for cells, the last quarter of a zone-refined bar was cut off, remelted, and grown rapidly into a single crystal. It was then heavily electropolished and thermally etched.~ Cells were revealed by the presence of many parallel rows of etch pits. The same process was carried out with material from the first half of the bar, but no cells were detected. These observations give evidence that a significant amount of impurity material was moved to the "dirty" end of the zone-refined bars. Further indication of purification was obtained from recrystallization experiments. It was found that, after cold rolling to a 97 pct reduction in thickness, the material from the pure end of the bar re-crystallized at room temperature, but the material from the "dirty" end did not. Other investigators6 have previously reported that zone-refined aluminum recrystallized at room temperature. The purified material was cast into 1/4 by 1/4 in. bars, and seeded crystals were grown in a (100) orientation and in a single slip orientation where the Schmid factor is m =2. The crystals were then cut to the desired length, annealed for 24 hr at 610°C, furnace-cooled, and etched in Tucker's etch. The crystals were tested in a floor-model Instron machine, using a gage length of 4 in. and a strain rate of 1/2 pct per min. The resulting curves are shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the differences between the curves for zone-refined and original-purity materials are small. These differences are within the scatter observed for crystals of the original purity. In particular, the zone refining does not significantly affect the onset of the different "stages" of the curves.

THE important advances that have been made of recent years in mining and milling methods and in mechanical equipment at mines need no re- telling, but there has been a remarkable growth in one type of equipment which has gone nearly unnoticed. That is the increasing use of storage-battery locomotives underground. Since the war the number of these locomotives and their field of use have increased tremendously; their growing acceptance represents an al- most complete reversal of opinion from an earlier period when they were generally looked upon as in- adequate for the strain of mine service. At the time when storage-battery powered units were first making their bid for recognition, the use of power in haulage had already passed through several phases; hand tramming, rope haulage, compressed air locomotives, even gasoline locomotives, had all been used, ending finally in the general adoption of the electric trolley locomotive for practically all power-haulage requirements. It was, and is, conceded that the trolley loco- motive met more adequately the varied and severe conditions of mine service than any previous type of haul- age unit. Subsequent developments have had to endure comparison and surpass in performance that type of haulage before changes would be considered.

THE study of the relations between gases and metals is one of perennial interest to all who are connected with the production of high-grade metallurgical products. The data reported here are the outcome of work of which the object is to determine the effects of dissolved gases upon the properties of metals and to gain a more detailed knowledge of the reactions between gases and molten metals, particularly iron, under definitely controlled conditions. We have attempted to reduce our margin of error by dealing with relatively large quantities of metal, from 4 to 13 lb. (2 to 6 kg.), and keeping the ratio of refractories to metal as small as practicable. The ingots produced are large enough to provide adequate material for making determinations of magnetic and other physical properties. In choosing the bell-jar type of furnace we were influenced by the results of considerable experimentation along the same general line which indicated that, for the scale or which we were to work, it was important to have the furnace structure independent of the vacuum enclosure. The use of a bell-jar surrounding the entire furnace accomplishes this and also gives great freedom of observation during operation and ready accessibility for the replacements which are necessary after each run. Our choice of analytical method was made in the light of the results secured by H. M. Ryder, who used a method similar in principle for the analysis of very small quantities of gas extracted from strips of metal heated electrically in high vacuum. We have presented some selected preliminary experimental data as being illustrative of the quantity and nature of the gases which occur in iron of different origins, but do not urge any hypothesis at this time.

Effects of variations in carbon content and micro-structure on the stress-rupture properties of a liquid-phase-sirztered, Izeut-resistunt alloy were studied. Using the powder rnetallurgy technique, specimens could be produced having stress-rupture profierties equivalent to or better than those of the alloy in wrought form. In addition, sintered specimens were easily hot worked even when carbon contents were as high as I pct. Correlations between stress-rupture properties and micro structure were obtained in some cases. IT is well known that many alloys used in high-temperature service are quite complex both from the standpoint of chemical composition and microstruc-ture. During the development of these alloys their complexity has in some cases led to treatment schedules which, while practical, often do not fully utilize available alloying elements. For example, in some alloys, massive carbides that form during ingot practice may never be dissolved by reasonable solution treatments and therefore are unavailable for subsequent precipitation hardening, Ref. 1. This investigation was undertaken to determine whether the powder metallurgy method of consolidation might provide distinct advantages over the conventional melting method. First, segregation of alloying elements might be eliminated or reduced and thus a more efficient use of these elements obtained. Second, the structures produced in powder specimens might differ considerably from those normally seen in castings, which would perhaps result in better response to subsequent mechanical or thermal treatments. If these results could be achieved, it was felt that both forgeability and stress-rupture properties might be improved. The alloy used in this investigation was S-816 produced by powder metallurgy methods. The influence of carbon content over the range of 0.1 to 1.0 wt pct was studied for the alloy in the as-sintered condition and after three additional treatments involving heat treatment, hot swaging, and combinations thereof. EXPERIMENTAL Standard S-816 has the composition shown in Table I. It is a cobalt-base alloy having a nominal carbon content of 0.4 pct and is classified as a precipitation-hardening alloy. This alloy was chosen because it is representative of a class of heat-resistant alloys and because adequate information was available concerning its response to various treatments and its subsequent properties. For this study, -100 mesh alloy powder having essentially the same composition as shown in Table I but without the 0.4 pct C was used. Desired carbon variations, achieved by wet mixing the alloy powder with graphite, ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 wt pct. Specimens were hydrostatically pressed and then sintered in vacuum by slowly heating until incipient melting was observed. Sintering this way gave a liquid phase in the interstices of the powder particles and achieved reasonably high densities. The average density of as-sintered specimens was about 95 pct of wrought alloy density. In order to obtain various microstructures, some specimens were heat treated (solution treated for 24 hr at 2150°F, water quenched; aged 16 hr at 1400°F, air cooled); others were hot swaged at 2150 o F (50 pct reduction in area), while still others were hot swaged (50 pct reduction in area) and then given the above heat treatment. During hot swaging it was observed that forgeability was quite good even when specimens contained as much as 1.0 pct C. Specimens were evaluated by stress-rupture test-

Xanthates have been used as collectors of sulfide minerals in the concentration of ores by flotation for over a decade, yet much remains to be done to elucidate the underlying reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of these compounds in this connection. Briefly stated, the known facts concerning the effect of these reagents on the floatability of minerals are as follows: 1. Xanthates are without effect on silicates, silica, and generally on minerals currently regarded as "gangues." 2. Xanthates in very small amount increase enormously the floatability of sulfides of copper, lead, silver, iron and mercury. 3. If zinc sulfides are first '(activated," as by treatment with a copper salt, they are readily floated by xanthates; otherwise not. 4. Elemental copper, silver and gold have their floatabilities increased by xanthates. 5. Sulfides of elements that are not typically metallic—e.g., stibnite, realgar, molybdenit—are not made to float markedly better by treatment with xanthates. 6. Oxidized minerals of lead and copper are floated if treated with large amounts of xanthates, but not so if treated with amounts of the same order of magnitude as required for sulfide flotation. Oxidized zinc minerals are not floated unless xanthates having unusually long hydrocarbon chains (e.g., eight carbon atoms or more) are used. Iron oxides and carbonate are not floated by xanthates. From a flotation standpoint the most striking feature about xanthates is the very small amount required to accomplish startling changes in the behavior of some minerals. The amounts used in practice to effect excellent concentration are frequently of the order of 0.05 lb, of agent per ton of ore; that is, of the order of one part of agent per forty thousand parts of ore. Changes in amount of agent of the order of 0.01 lb. per ton of ore (or 0.002 lb. per ton of pulp, on a 4:l basis) have marked effects on the metallurgical results obtained. Yet these changes represent a variation of but one part per million parts of pulp.

Outline of the Process THE Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace y combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as % in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100¬mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 91/ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the froth or concentrate. UNTIL a few years ago, geological mapping, the study of ore boulders, and different geophysical methods were the principal means used in the systematic search for mineral deposits covered by a layer of disintegration products or soil. These methods have been developed to a high stage of perfection as far as the geometrical definition of the conductor is considered. Use of geophysical methods in prospecting is based on the fact that an ore body differs from the country rock not only geologically but also in its physical properties. The general drawbacks and complications included in the use of geophysical methods are well known to everyone who has been using them, so need not be entered into here in detail. One of the more important ones is the fact that geophysical methods are unable to furnish information concerning the chemical composition of the ore bodies responsible for the indications. Further, the ores of many metals, such as silver, gold, beryllium, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, vanadium, antimony, chromium. molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and the platinum metals cannot be directly located by known geophysical methods, owing to lack of physical characteristics suitable for distinguishing them from the country rock. Thus it is quite natural that efforts have been made to develop direct methods for prospecting and locating ore bodies of the elements named. Known as chemical, biogeo-chemical, and geobotanical methods of prospecting, these have been much improved during recent years. A brief review of these methods and of some results obtained with them will be presented in the following, on the basis of available information and my own experience.

It is concluded from an X-ray stztdy that the formation of the hcp Mg3Cd superlattice is a nuclea-tion and growth reaction. A two-phase, ordered-plus-disordered, region is observed between 153" nnd 141"C. A maximum in the flow stress is observed both at temperature and in quenched specimens within the two-phase region. The peak arises fro112 the extra energy required to create antiphase boundary upon cutting the ordered regions. Hardening during isothermal annealing in Mg3Cd has been shown to be similar to the domain hardening in Cu3Au-type alloys in that up to the maximum the structure is ordered domains growing into a short range ordered matrix. The hardening is due to a combination of short range order strengthening and the strengthening produced when antiphase boundary has to be created. In a recent study1 of the effect of long-range order upon the mechanical properties and deformation modes of hcp Mg3Cd a comparison was made be- tween quenched (disordered) and slow-cooled (fully ordered) specimens. The most striking observations were that the disordered alloy yields at a much higher stress than the ordered alloy, and that there is a change in slip mode from primarily (_0001) ba_sal slip in the disordered state to (0001), {1010}, {1122}, and {l011} slip in the ordered state. The main purpose of the present work is to extend these observations to determine whether MgsCd exhibits a peak in flow stress at an intermediate degree of order, or at a critical domain size, as do other orderedstems. However, disagreement exists about the Mg3Cd order transformation with respect to: 1) the location of the critical temperature for order, 165°C or 153"~,' and 2) how the degree of order varies with temperature. Welber et a1.5 concluded from specific heat measurements that the formation of Mg3Cd is a second-order reaction with the degree of order a continuous function of temperature, while Moore and Raynor concluded that it is neither a first-order reaction, with the degree of order a discontinuous function of temperature, nor a second-order reaction.
