The seawalls that surround Ellis Island were constructed in the early 1900s and now show varying degrees of deterioration. An innovative approach to the structural repair of the seawalls was developed, which consisted of the use of micropiles for stabilization of vertical and horizontal seawall movements. The micropiles were installed through the existing seawalls and penetrated through a thick overburden, consisting of soft alluvial deposits and relatively hard glacial till, and were bonded into Manhattan Schist. Drilling of the micropiles often encountered timber and other obstructions. The selection of micropiles for stabilization of the seawalls offered significant advantages over other foundation systems and over alternative soil improvement techniques. They allowed drilling through a variety of materials without the need for significant retooling or changes to the drilling procedure. This reduced the impact of foundation construction on the sensitive historical landscape and structures, and prevented the need for significant foundation work from the water side of the seawalls. In addition, micropiles offered relatively high installation rates and flexibility to adapt to the varying conditions along the seawalls.

Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

There is a saying, ?If it moves, it vibrates.? This is especially true in our modern industrial environments, where workers use powered tools, machinery, vehicles, and heavy equipment. How workers are affected by these elements of the industrial working environment is a concern of health professionals, govern­ments, and scientists around the world. How to adequately assess the effects of human vibration exposure is an equally important issue. The human body comprises a dynamic structure that is living, intelligent, and complex. Consequently, it is not unreasonable to consider that exposing the body to an array of vibration environments would result in outcomes that are not necessarily simple or easily predictable. Sensations caused by vibration may include nausea, annoyance, discomfort or pain, and exhilaration or pleasure. Many factors contribute to the effects of vibration on humans, including the characteristics of the motion and the exposed indi­vidual, the activities of the exposed individual, and various elements of the environment. There have been attempts to summarize the effects of occupational vibration exposures by simply recommending the avoidance of certain frequencies of vibration or by providing a graphical method, i.e., a single curve displaying all human responses to all frequencies. However, such efforts have not withstood the scrutiny of scientific research and analysis. Thus, attendees and participants at this professional gathering now have the rare opportunity to benefit from the technological advances and new scientific research to enhance their understanding of human responses to vibration that suggest more than a simplistic approach. In the tradition of the First American Conference on Human Vibration (1st ACHV) held in Morgantown, WV, June 2006, the 2nd ACHV provides a forum for scientists, engineers, medical doctors, industrial hygienists, and educators to learn and advance research and education in the specialized area of human body vibration. The conference was organized by the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, University of Illinois at Chicago, with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. As with the first conference, the 2nd ACHV provides the unique opportunity to learn about the current activities of peers and colleagues and to exchange information on topics of interest such as human response, human modeling, experimental design, sensors, new technologies, and epidemiological studies of human responses to hand-transmitted and whole-body vibration. The conference organizers hope that the publication of these conference proceedings continues to foster new research and technological advances to reduce health hazards associated with occupational vibration exposures.

Megascopic and microscopic studies of cleats and mining induced cleavage in Ihe first workings at Leichhardt Colliery reveal the presence of four distinct fracture sets. Microscopic studies confirm underground observations of the fracture sets.The most likely order of formation of the fractures is (i) "butt" cleats (ii) facc cleats (iii) shallow dipping faults (iv) mining induced cleavage. Three fracture sets apparently formed by tensiIe failure. Microscopy shows that the mining induced cleavage surfaces have preferred starting or lerminating points at the extremity of a "butt" cleat and a vitrite-dull coal band boundary. It is postulated that the induced cleavage begins at 'butt' cleats which behave as Griffith flaws under high compression around Leichhardt Colliery faces. Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are associated with only those workings which are affected by mining induced cleavage and occur at or adjacent to working faces.

The following is a report on the development of two unique and separate cofferdam systems used in the construction of the marine foundations for the I-205 Columbia River Bridge at Portland, Oregon for the Oregon Department of Transportation. The first of these two systems utilized interlocking H-pile 100 ft long to form a cofferdam 145 ft by 58 ft in plan and 100 ft deep. The second system consisted of two immense bell shaped steel forms. The larger of the two forms was 83 ft by 66 ft in plan, 62 ft high and weighed 450 tons. This form was externally stiffened for a designed hydrostatic head of 54 ft. Both forms were designed, except for the top 14 ft, to be set and stripped in one solidly welded unit. The supporting geological formation for the bridge foundations is the Troutdale, a cemented sand and gravel. This formation is at the ground surface on the Washington Shore and slopes downward to a depth of 115 ft below normal high water at about mid-channel. In this area the Troutdale formation is covered with a layer of fine to medium sand 90 to 100 ft thick. It was the variable depth of the Troutdale which determined the two types of foundations and the corresponding to the two cofferdam systems.

FIGURES for the first 11 months of 1935 indicate that the total coal production of the United States for 1935 will be approximately 416,000,000 tons, or almost identical with the production figures for 1934. Bituminous production will show a gain of about six million tons, and anthracite production a loss of about the same tonnage, compared with the previous year. This does not take into account so-called "bootleg" anthracite coal amounting to approximately 5,000,000 tons. Twenty-nine years ago, in 1906, the production of coal was almost identical with this year's production. At that time, 626,000 men were employed in producing this tonnage, which took a toll of 2138 lives from accidents. In 1935, approximately 540,000 men were required to produce the same tonnage with an estimated loss of 1155 lives. This shows definite safety advancement in the industry, but even so accidents are still costing an average of 3c. a ton more than they should.

The use of augered cast-in-place piles has seen tremendous growth under commerical structures in the past twenty years. Problems with vibration, soil densification and/or heave associated with driven piles do not occur with properly installed augered piles. Augered cast-in-place piles were originally constructed (1950s) with diameters of .31 m (12 in.) and lengths up to 6.1 m (20 ft); however with the advent of better drilling equipment, diameters varying from .41m(16 in.)to .61 m (24 in.) and typical depths ranging from 18.3 m (60 ft) to 24.4 m (80 ft) are achievable. Reinforcement may vary from a single high strength rebar (Grade 60) at the top of the pile to a continuous steel cage depending on loading (compression, tension-uplift, and lateral). Typical axial design loads (compression) for a single augered cast-in-place pile are in the 445 kN (50 tons) to 890 kN (100 tons) range.

The Fe-TiC composite powder was synthesized in situ by carbothermal reduction of ilmenite. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The effects of the reaction temperature (1300 °C - 1500°C) and milling time of precursors on the Fe-TiC conversion and powder morphologies were investigated using XRD and SEM method. The synthesized products showed that composite with iron matrix and titanium carbide as a reinforced phase was formed.

It presents the range of selected configurations, inclination, dimensions etc. Select case studies are used to address the influence of structure, stress and materials handling on the longevity of the employed ore passes.

Sulphur-rich minerals such as authigenic pyrite (FeS2) are commonly associated with coal mine workings. Metallic elements such as arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are enriched in the pyrite relative to their concentrations in the surrounding environment. Exposure of pyrite and coal to air and water results in a series of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions that are commonly catalysed by species of Thiobacillus bacteria. These reactions lead to a lowering of the pH in the drainage waters (acid mine drainage, AMD) and subsequent mobilisation of trace metals in environmentally significant concentrations. This study assesses the spatial distribution of As, Zn and Cu concentration in water in relation to pH and Eh (redox potential) downstream from the tailings at the Wangaloa opencast lignite mine in southeast Otago. This mine was abandoned in the late 1980s due to a decrease in the economic viability of mining the lignite. The area is showing the characteristic symptoms of AMD, which is detrimental to the health of several Pinus radiate growing on some of the tailings. The pH of the drainage waters can get as low as 2, and in some instances, lower, but it returns to near neutral (pH 6.5) up to 200 metres down stream from the base of mine waste piles. It is well documented that the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is catalysed microbially, causing a substantial decrease in the pH of the drainage waters. Acidification is then counteracted predominantly by natural abiotic remediation processes occurring downstream.

Exploration drilling by Joint Venture partners CRA Exploration Pty Ltd and Elders Mining PNG Pty Ltd has discovered a signif- icant copper and gold deposit at the Wafi River prospect, 60km WSW of Lae in Papua New Guinea. An indicated resource of 18Mt at 2.5g/t Au using a lg/t cutoff has been delineated in Zone A. No estimate has been determined for the separate copper occurr- ence at Rafferty's Zone but the copper will be significant to the project. Metallurgical studies on the gold indicate that the primary ore is refractory to direct cyanidation giving a highly variable and inadequate response. All conventional refractory ore oxidation techniques perform well on both ore and pyrite concentrate and oxidation occurs rapidly. No metallurgical studies on the copper mineralisation have been undertaken. Hypogene covellite and chalcocite copper mineralisation is associated with an intensely quartz-stockworked, and quartz and alunite-altered intrusive. Economically significant gold mineralisation occurs in distal subhorizontal lenses, within a sedimentary host, that plunge toward the intrusive. These lenses are sandwiched between overlying quartz and alunite-altered zones and underlying quartz and smectite zones in a mixed zone of quartz, dickite, kaolinite and illite alteration. The alteration and mineralisation is classified as a high sulphidation, epithermal style resulting from the influx of hot, acid magmatic fluids. Preliminary land ownership, road access, power supply and mine infrastructure studies are in progress. The project is currently at an advanced exploration stage.

Common brattice cloths in use in Australian coal mines are compared by permeability measurements. The respective advantages of twill weave and tarpauling* weave cloths are listed, and the improvements to be obtained in the ventilation of a mine by using tarpauling cloths instead of the commonly used twill cloths are stressed. Plastic cloths are widely used overseas and are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe onset of extensive full-scale mechanization in Australian coal mines during the past few years has increased attention given to the ventilation of working places. Many inadequacies of the present system have been brought to light and not the least of these is connected with the use of brattice cloth, both in directing the flow of air around the face and in acting as a temporary sealing mechanism. A well-constructed line of brattice will only provide fair ventilation for a distance of 100 ft. Beyond this point the volume or air reaching the face falls off rapidly.Some of the shortcomings associated' with the use of brattice cloths are:1. Hurried installation, necessitated by a rapid advance, often results in poor workmanship with, consequently, an excessively high leakage rate.2. High places caused by falls of roof are difficult and time-consuming to seal.3. Curtains, in lines of brattice crossing transport routes, are difficult to maintain.4. INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. AFTER the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public assayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a sufficiently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present., small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. During the response to the Moura No 4 disaster, use was made of the New South Wales Mines Rescue Service’s ‘Mineshield’ inertisation equipment. The equipment had to be transported from Newcastle, approximately 1400 kms, and the liquid nitrogen a similar distance. The time taken, and therefore availability of the liquid nitrogen, became a significant problem. Operational issues were also experienced during use. Typically the liquid nitrogen is converted to a gas (vaporised) before being injected into the mine. However, as the propane gas tanker used for the vapourising unit was delayed, an attempt was made to inject the liquid nitrogen directly down uncased boreholes. This proved unsuccessful.Following the Moura No 4 disaster and the Moura No 2 disaster, recommendations were made relating to having inertisation capacity for the Queensland coal mining industry. Today the Queensland industry has multiple options available for inertisation, including the high-volume GAG and smaller volume units such as boilers and membrane separation units. Although it ultimately aided re-entry into Moura No 4, most likely due to the issues associated with supply to Central Queensland, liquid nitrogen has not found favour within the Queensland industry as an inertisation tool.Coregas has commissioned an air separation plant in Mackay, improving the availability of liquid nitrogen to Central Queensland. Based on the availability of this nitrogen, recent sealing operations at Kestrel have trialled using liquid nitrogen and associated vapourising units. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. "INTRODUCTION Characteristics of the mineral products that are to be contrasted herein are net energy consumed in grinding to a definite top limiting size and size distribution of the ground products. Through contrasts of these grinding characteristics this paper to differences in related mineral products and in unlike products. For,example, in anticipation of the data to follow, although Joplin chert and Babeitt taconits are running mates in defying the best crushing machinery, taconite is one of the more docile and Joplin chert one of the most refractory mineral products ordinarily fed to a grinding Routine grinding tests on a great variety of ores and tabulation of the findings have been covered amply by Lennox 4/ and by Maxon 5/ and associates. In contrast to that work, the present paper is a record of random tests made over a long period, and each answered an urgent question at the moment. The work was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama. Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. The New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) was the first major water supply tunnel for New York City. The 50-km (31-mi) long tunnel has 33 open shafts 6 m (20 ft) to 121 m (397 ft) deep. The tunnel and shafts are lined with brick and mortar, with cast iron lining and pressure covers in six pressurized shafts. Details of the 1895 construction are provided and compared to modern construction techniques. The paper provides rehabilitation techniques for the shafts and pressure covers, including grouting, epoxy lining, temporary bulkhead design and installation and placement of tremie concrete 98 m (320ft) below the water level in a 122 m (400ft)deep shaft using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to monitor the placement.
