During the meeting of the Institute last year at Port Pirie, the opportunity was taken to sample the lead bullion coming from the blast furnace and various stages during the refining process. Also, in the desilverising section, the upper zinc rich phase was sampled as the silver content built up and in the cupellation operation a series of samples was taken as the silver content of the bullion increased. In these two cases, the samples were taken under the supervision of a member of the staff of the Broken Hill AssociatedSmelters.In the following account of the microstructure of the samples taken, only the main phases present have received attention. In this connection deduction from phase diagrams of binary alloys has been used in conjunction with the assays carried out on duplicate samples taken at the same time as those for micro examination.

This paper aims to increase our understanding about existing capacity-building approaches and their implications for obtaining a social license to operate in the mining industry. The notion of ?capacity building? is gaining increasing currency in the mining sector in developing countries due to a rapid rise in the globalisation of mining operations. Capacity-building is conceived here as a process that lasts after the mine-cycle, intended to provide local mining communities with tangible skills and knowledge to gain meaningful employment in mining or other industries relevant for the local economy. Building community capacity to understand and effectively respond to these transformations is vital for obtaining a social license to operate, as it promotes sustainable and locally relevant development. Accountability mechanisms such as global norms and international standards increasingly highlight the need to build capacity among stakeholders, particularly among local communities adjacent to mining operations. International frameworks and mining companies have embraced the notion of capacity-building as a driver to assist corporate social and operational performance. However, this narrow understanding of capacity-building through the prism of corporate social responsibility and ?best practice? is preventing the industry from meaningfully impacting communities and maintaining a social license to operate. This latter notion is being widely embedded across multiple industry sectors, as a social and economic reward from mining companies to compensate communities for natural resource extraction and gain social acceptance. Although both concepts are widely recognised in the minerals industry, insufficient attention has been paid to the implications of applying a top-down (mining-orientated) or a bottom-up (community-orientated) capacity-building approach for obtaining a social license to operate, or indeed how these two concepts are linked and applied in practice. At times, communities lack the necessary capacities in the form of education and skills to deal with mining-led livelihood transformations. This is preventing both mining companies and communities from forging sustainable livelihoods and responding to mining-led livelihood transformations, a situation that is creating discontent among communities and reducing the possibility of obtaining and renewing a social license to operate for the industry. Based on a review of current scholarly debates, accountability mechanisms in the mining industry and fieldwork findings in Colombia, this paper will contribute to an understanding of the implications of existing capacity-building approaches that support a social license to operate.

The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a comprehensive study of coal strength. More than 4000 individual test results from over 60 seams were extracted from the literature and combined in the most complete data base of the uniaxial compressive strength of coal ever assembled. In addition, more than 100 case studies of in-mine pillar performance were available in the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) data base. Statistical analysis of this wealth of data has yielded valuable results. The data shows clearly that the "size effect" is related to coal structure. The widely-used Gaddy formula, which predicts a significant strength reduction as the specimen size is increased, was found to apply only to "blocky" coals. For friable coals, the size effect was much less pronounced or even non-existent. Case histories of failed pillars are the best available data on in situ coal strength. This study found no correlation between the ARMPS stability factor of failed pillars and coal specimen strength. Pillar design was much more reliable when a uniform coal strength was used in all case histories.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

On the Hauraki goldfields, within the limits of Cape Colville Peninsula, the Paheozoic rocks are confined to the district north of a line drawn from Mercury Bay on the east coast to Rocky Point on the shore of the Frith of Thames. South of Kennedy's Bay they are developed on the east coast only at Kuaotunu, at which place gold mining is carried on in sandstones and slates of this age. Between Tapu Creek and Coromandel there is, along and adjacent to the shore of the gulf, a very considerable development of PaJreozoic and in part of Trias rocks, and between the Tiki Stream and the northern end of Tokatea Hill, along the western slope of the main range, lies the special area of the Palreozoic or carboniferous rocks that have more particularly to be dealt with in this paper. The same formation has a large devolpment between Cabbage Bay and the northern slopes of Moehau, and appears to the water marge on both sides of this part of the peninsula.In this part they are of special interest as having, on the west spur of Moehau, a considerable variety of dyke rocks intruded into the sedimentaries, the interest in which is increased by the fact that these dykes theIllselves are of Palreozoic age and correspond to the dykes that are so' abundant in the Tokatea-Tiki area. Tasks during Phase I of this contract effort were performed in four principal functional areas. These were geology, hydrology, reclamation and mining. Data were gathered from literature reviews, mine visits, survey of manufacturers, consultation with government agencies, and unpublished or private communications with contractors and consultants. The data collected were analyzed for omissions or inaccuracies, then organized into tables, graphs and flow charts to provide a concise body of technical and cost data suitable for the engineering analyses required in Phase II of this contract. Maps illustrating estimated grade and thickness of the oil shale were prepared, some of which are included as exhibits to this report. A preliminary mine layout was performed to test the completeness of the collected data.

This paper presents ground control best practices in weak rock environments including the "Unsupported" Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve and awareness pertaining to the potentially detrimental effects of using resin grouted rebar in weak rock masses and the false sense of security that the use of resin grouted rebar may instill. Ground support is almost always used in weak rock environments, though the type of support used can vary widely. The development of the Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve by the addition of 463 case histories of RMR76 values ranging from 25 to 60, has also been calibrated to four different support categories; Category A: Pattern Friction Sets, Category B: Pattern Friction Sets with Spot Bolting of Rebar, Category C: Pattern Friction Sets with Pattern Rebar Bolts and Category D: Cablebolting, Shotcrete, Spiling, Timber Sets or Underhand Cut and Fill. Design of underground man-entry type excavations in North America relies heavily upon empirical analysis. This design requires a higher Factor of Safety than other non-man entry type excavations. A comparison of the calculated ½ span failure Factor of Safety between all the categories is also presented.

This report describes a process for quickly developing information that is useful for skills training. The process is called job training analysis (JTA). Its main use is to structure skills training at the jobsite. JTA supports structured skills training by identifying the job duties, tasks, and steps and the reasons why those job components are important. The outcome of the JTA process is a worksheet—a training outline based on the knowledge and expertise of experienced workers. Time invested in developing a JTA will result in significantly more time saved when it is used appropriately by skilled trainers. Like a roadmap, JTA saves time and energy. Experimental work at several mine sites helped document, refine, and validate the JTA process. JTAs for two mining jobs—roof bolting and lift truck operation—at two different mine sites are used to illustrate some of the concepts and the specific JTA process described in this report. The work at these two sites was influenced by cooperative work between the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at several other mine sites and prior collaborative work with the U.S. Navy. The mining JTA process is grounded within the military research on the design of instructional systems. MSHA and NIOSH worked to simplify and apply the military training development model for mining industry use through collaborative work at several mine sites. The JTA process involves three activities: (1) planning, (2) a 1- to 3-day workshop where the JTA is developed using facilitated work with subject-matter experts, and (3) followup. Guidelines and considerations for each of these activities are included. Results indicate that the JTA process has been well received and valued by mining industry participants. It blends aspects of health and safety, production, maintenance, and crew coordination.

Based on the results of in-situ observations and physical model analysis, a computer simulation method, FEAEBP, has been developed to predict the behaviors of main roof breakage in longwall mining by considering it as a Kirchhoff plate on Winkler elastic foundation. This method in used to investigate the initiation, and development of the breaking process of main roof and its displacement field before and after its breakage. In this paper the simulation method is introduced, characteristics of the displacement field of the main roof is discussed and monitoring variation of the displacement field of the main roof in a Chinese longwall face is demonstrated.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.

Norddeutsche Affinerie?s (NA?s) primary smelter continually increased production in the past decade. The smelter?s concentrate capacity was expanded from 500,000 in 1993 to 1,000,000 t/a dry concentrate in 2000 and the goal of the present upgrade is 1,150,000 t/a. These goals were reached without erecting new equipment in the anode area, but instead by refitting the existing plant. The life-span extension of the casting moulds was absolutely necessary to increase the casting performance from 260,000 to 450,000 t anodes per year on a single casting wheel. Different mould manufacturing processes and alloys were tested in order to find the optimal mould. In the past the moulds were cast directly, now the anode mould is milled into NA copper cakes. Accompanying measures taken were the shortening of maintenance and repair times as well as improvements in the refining furnace equipment.

The problems of ore-bearing palaevolcanic structures in folded belts are actual because of their high productivity in nonferrous, ferrous and noble metals ores. Now relationships of location and conditions of formation for sulfide-massive and gold-bearing deposits are investigated very well in Urals. But carboniferous sulfide-barite mineralization, for example the barite veins in Arcaimsky palaevolcano are?nt studied enough now [3-5]. The purpose of this research is the studying of mineralogy and thermobarogeochemistry of barite from the hydrothermal veins. It will allow to determine the conditions of its formation and to compare it to the similar mineralization of others ore types.

This paper discusses the Installation of a Vibwall for the Cardiff Bay Barrage Project Wales, UK, by Kvaerner Cementation Foundations. Only the second use of the technique in the UK the wall was successfully placed to a depth in excess of 20 metres, in unique and challenging conditions. The installation of the Vibwall was a technical success, but not a financial one. The use of the technique was at its "limits" and this paper recommends some of the controls essential in the carrying out of such work in the future.

The mechanization of hard rock underground mines offers a large potential for reducing cost, improving efficiency, and increasing profitability. However, in spite of serious efforts by quite a number of equipment developers and mining company initiatives, the industry has achieved little real progress. The task is difficult and the blasting alternative to mechanical excavation is an effective and well-developed method, which continues to improve in spite of its inherent limitations. A large number of machines have been built and tried. Only a few developments have succeeded to make a major impact on underground hard rock mining. It is certain that hard rock mines would be laid out and designed quite differently if the mining engineers knew they had available continuous mechanical excavation machines. In the absence of the machines, mines will be designed for excavation by traditional methods. It is not easy to utilize mechanical excavation in a mine which is designed to operate with normal drill and blast excavation. This is certainly an impediment to machine development. But what if an ore body cannot be mined conventionally, simply because the mining company cannot get permits to satisfy the ever increasing strict EIS requirements of the general public and governmental agencies? This may provide the incentive necessary to develop the equipment that will be needed by a new mining method that will have almost no impact on the environment.

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days.
