The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

"The need to fill the void space or annulus created between an excavated tunnel or shaft and the final lining system has long been a requirement in underground construction. Most of those types of voids are created as a result of employing the two pass tunneling lining method. Filling of this void is called backfilling. For many years the materials used as backfill were primarily reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, sanded grout, neat cement grout, or blown-in sand/pea gravel. However, in the past 20 years the use of cellular grouts/cellular concrete as the backfill material has greatly increased. Most cellular grout is made of a mixture of water, Portland cement (with or without the addition of fly ash), a foaming agent and admixtures such as a water-reducer or superplasticizer.It is the authors’ preference to use the term cellular grout as opposed to cellular concrete since by ACI Concrete Terminology an ACI Standard (ACI CT 13), concrete contains aggregates. Normally cellular grout does not contain sand (finite aggregate), but almost never contain course aggregates.The authors believe there are several reasons for this increased use of cellular grout as backfill, such as:• The increase utilization of the various trenchless tunneling methods. Tunnels constructed using trenchless method tend to be smaller in size, excavated diameter or cross sectional area. Making man-entry for placing backfill from inside the secondary liner, utilizing pre-installed grout posts, more difficult if not impossible. It is these workspace restrictions that are the drivers as to when to utilize grout ports installed during the pipe/liner fabrication versus grout delivery pipes installed within the void/annulus space.• The ability of cellular backfills to be pumped and flow longer distances.• The unit weight of cellular grouts can be controlled by mix design and generally can range from 560 Kg/m3 (35 lbs/CF) to 1040 Kg/m3 (65 lbs/CF)."

As computers develop and computer literacy continues to rise the development of and use of such tools will spread.

Over the last 10 years the diameter of unbraced, unlined and unanchored circular shafts has grown dramatically in many parts of the world. This progress has taken place through improvements in: construction methods; concrete rheology; and design capabilities. Excavation equipment has become more precise in terms of operator control and ability to correct alignment of digging elements leading to better alignment tolerances. Also contributing to the increases in shaft diameters is the evolution of design models. A better understanding of soil structure interaction is being incorporated into the analyses in terms of radial soil stresses and imposed loads on the shaft. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress made in circular shaft construction, the primary design considerations, and some innovative uses of efficient arc elements to develop unsupported structures of other shapes. In addition, a summary of recent circular shafts constructed worldwide is provided.

The Mathews et al (1981) stability graph was developed to provide guidance in the determination of stope sizes to control dilution in bulk mining of large orebodies. Longhole and sublevel open stoping (LHOS and SLOS) are the lower end in scale of underground mass mining with panel and block caving (PBC) at the higher end. Currently, the stability states of stopes in the stability graph are described qualitatively as stable, unstable or cave. The alternative quantitative option to the qualitative stability graph is the Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS) stability graph. The ELOS stability graph only applies to narrow vein orebodies. It is easy for the Mathews et al (1981) and the ELOS stability graphs to be applied outside the limits of their databases. What is currently referred to as ‘stable’ in the present stability graphs has diverse interpretations at different mines depending on their acceptable dilution values. In 2014, a research program was conceptually conceived at the UNSW Australia School of Mining Engineering to develop a quantitative dilution-based stability graph independent of orebody width to address some industry concerns on the use of the stability graphs. A dilution-based stability graph provides the mining engineer the flexibility to determine open stope sizes based on what dilution amounts are acceptable. The graph also unifies both the Mathews et al (1981) and ELOS stability graphs for wide and narrow vein orebodies, thus, eliminating their potential misapplications. To date, the concept is proven with case studies from metalliferous underground mining operations located across Australia. This paper presents the dilution-based stability graph concept, the initial results and future plans to account for other critical factors and increase confidence in its application with the addition of more data outside Australia.CITATION:Suorineni, F T, Papaioanou, A, Baird, L and Hines, D, 2016. The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.

The more than 40,000 mining industry professionals that are expected to attend the National Mining Association’s(NMA) MINExpo International2000 trade show and conference will be treated to the exhibition’s largest display ever. The exhibit is expected to cover more than 60,385 m2(650,000 sq ft) and feature more than 1,300 exhibitors. The event is set for Oct. 9-12, 2000 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Richard L. Lawson, NMA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “MINExpo 2000 will showcase everything that mining is proudest of. This is the largest premier mining exposition in the world.” MINExpo is held every four years.

"The recent combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) can provide considerable insight into the performance of flotation cells. One area of interest from a fundamental equipment design perspective has been the influence of flotation cell size and the inflow rate on the metallurgical performance of the cell. One of the specific design objectives when increasing the size of flotation cells, or increasing the feed flow to the flotation cell, is to ensure that the feed stream flowing into the cell does not have an opportunity to bypass the mechanism.This paper describes the initial modeling efforts to quantify the inter-relationship of cell size, inflow rates, and feed and discharge box placement, on the retention time distribution of solids in the flotation cell, and the fraction of particles that bypass the mechanism on a size by size basis.INTRODUCTIONThe great majority of newly installed cells in mineral processing plants world-wide are of the cylindrical tank design and this tank shape offers a number of hydraulic advantages over the older style of square cells. Cylindrical cells give symmetrical flow patterns and by careful design of the mechanism and tank internals, the flow patterns generated can concentrate the more intense mixing in the lower portion of the cell to promote good solids suspension and particlebubble contact. Simultaneously, cylindrical tank design gives a more quiescent upper zone for particle-bubble transport into the froth zone. These symmetrical flow patterns are naturally disturbed in normal operation by the slurry inflow and outflow from the individual cells. The challenge for flotation cell designers is to determine the magnitude of these flow disturbances, and to assess whether or when the inflow and outflow rates have a sufficient impact on the hydraulic flow patterns so as to potentially affect the metallurgical performance of the flotation cell."

The hydraulic turbine blade of the matensitic stainless steel (Cr13%,Ni5%,Mo1%) is a kind of large and curved shape, which is susceptible to deformation in both casting and heat treatment processes. The coupling analysis of heat transfer, phase transformation and stress in heat treatment process of the turbine blade for Three Gorges Project is carried out by using Deform-3D software. Its temperature fields, phase fields and stress fields in heat treatment process are obtained. And its deformation is predicted. In the cooling process of normalizing, the blade exhibits relatively large deformation. Based on the stress analysis and deformation prediction in heat treatment process, an algorithm for the determination of reverse deformation of the blade casting in heat treatment process is presented. And the reverse deformation distribution of blade is obtained.

"Kaiser Resources Ltd. has completed feasibility studies resulting in approval of $277,500,000 for the construction of the Greenhills Surface Coal Mine, located 35 km north of Sparwood, B.C. The mine is designed to produce 1,800,000 tonnes per year of metallurgical coal over a 20-year period by conventional truck /shovel methods.The project is in the detailed design phase, with some preparation work being carried out on the site. The major construction activities are scheduled to commence in the spring of 1981. Mine development and pre-stripping will commence in July 1981, with first coal production scheduled for mid 1983.This paper will be a general description of the project and will include a discussion of the geology, reserves, mine planning, coal handling and processing, surface facilities and related topics.IntroductionProject DefinitionThe Greenhills Project is designed to produce, by conventional truck I shovel surface mining methods, 1,800,000 clean tonnes of metallurgical coal per year for twenty years . The production/ life constraints were chosen as being meaningful for planning and evaluation purposes after appraisal of the market potential and are not limited .by economic reserves. Substantial additional strippable reserves are available which would facilitate expansion of the proposed mine life and/ or capacity. In fact , all the facilities are designed so that they can be expanded in the future to accommodate a doubling of annual coal production, and certain portions of the coal processing facilities are being installed with an annual capacity of 3,600,000 tonnes. The mine will also produce approximately 2,400,000 clean tonnes of oxidized thermal coal, mostly in the first decade."

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it comes into contact with the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb onto bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can facilitate the adsorption of oleic acid onto bastnaesite. Results from attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that all of these collectors adsorb strongly onto bastnaesite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected. The ATR-FTIR results confirm those obtained by AFM. In general, hydroxamic acid collectors (HA and SHA) adsorb onto bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

The Barrick Zaldivar mine is an openpit, heap-leach copper mine in Region II of northern Chile at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,826 ft), approximately 1,400 km (870 miles) north of Santiago and 175 km (109 miles) southeast of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2006, Zaldívar produced 307 million lbs of copper, with reserves estimated at 5.7 billion lbs. The mine uses conventional methods of openpit mining: Pure cathode copper is produced by three stages of crushing and stacking the ore, followed by heap leaching and bacterial activity to extract copper from the ore into solution. A solvent extraction and electrowinning process then removes the copper from solution and produces the cathode copper. A flotation plant also recovers copper contained in the fine fraction of the crushed ore. In 2006, an existing A-frame structure that covered copper ore from the mine?s secondary crushing operation was damaged beyond repair. The material delivery configuration of this original structure had the conveyor carrying incoming ore directly over the low roof to drop ore into the building at its peak, and ore trickling from the sides of the conveyor had accumulated on the roof, overloading it. A better solution had to be found, and fast: First, the Chilean Commission does not permit uncovered piles of this type since the extremely fine material leads to serious pollution problems. Second, Barrick Zaldivar is very concerned about worker safety, and the amount of dust created by the uncovered pile was not acceptable. The Wabana deposit of Dosco Industries Limited is situated on the east coast of Newfoundland, at Bell Island in Conception Bay. It is a Clinton-type iron-formation of Lower Ordovician age. Five separate beds have been recognized, with others noted locally. Economic production has been obtained from the Lower, Middle and Upper beds, which are second, third and fifth in sequence, al-though at present only the Lower Bed is worked. The potential area of occurrence is about 70 square miles. It i;; bounded by major faults to the north, east and west and truncated by erosion at the south, where rocks of the de-posit crop out on the north side of the island. The iron is contained in oolitic hematite and chamosite, with minor siderite. As the deposit is submarine, conventional exploration methods are not applicable and much interpretation and projection from mined areas is necessary to guide exploration and development. With the interpretation of information from existing mined ores, it is possible, using a minimum of diamond drilling in advance of working faces, to maintain adequate ore reserves.

Long-range projection of demand for domestic crude oil indicates a continued upward movement and accentuates the need for increasing the recovery from known crude-oil resources to supplement expected future discoveries. Consequently, the industry and Government have given special attention to the viscous or heavy-oil deposits because they offer the distinct possibility of large order increases in ultimate recovery. This report presents data pertaining to 150 heavy-oil reservoirs in Arkansas including oil characteristics of samples from 38 of these reservoirs. To January 1, 1967, about 600 million bbl of heavy oil has been recovered from the 150 reservoirs in 63 oilfields; however, about 4.5 billion bbl, or 88 pct, of oil remained in the ground. Of prime importance is that much of this heavy-oil resource is in reservoirs having characteristics considered favorable for thermal-recovery operations. Data for the thermal projects initiated [thus Ear are presented in individual field discussions. Also discussed is the t crude oil supply-demand situation in the State.

In this study a generalized specification and costing model for high tonnage coal carrying conveyor belts of 3.5 to 100 miles is presented. These belt systems, in modular units or flights, of up to 9 miles in length can be considered in terms of gathering systems. The study format is sufficiently open to allow users to insert their own requirements and parameters. A specific case study is provided. Because conveyor belts are feasible almost anywhere, this study has not investigated any specific route or geographic location. Rather, it has concentrated on setting up an heuristic programming model for conveyor belt facility optimization and cost minimization. The analysis starts with the principle factors involved in the design of the system and their optimization for various cases. This is followed, in Section 5.4, with a factor by factor cost analysis based on industry data and the preceding optimization. The next step is the development of both facility and costing models suitable for computer analysis. Logic flow diagrams are presented at each major analytic step.

Physical, mineralogical and geochemical characterization, along with some beneficiation approach to pre-concentrate the Ni content of the chromite overburden material of the Sukinda Valley, India, have been carried out in detail. Mineralogically, the overburden consists of geothite, quartz, hematite, magnetite and secondary silicates in varying proportions. A specific Ni mineral phase is absent in this material with the Ni and Fe being mostly enriched in finer fractions. Distribution of Ni and Fe in various size fractions and increase of Ni with increase in Fe (goethite content) indicate that goethite is the major Ni-bearing mineral phase. Quantitative estimation of goethite from chemical analysis and weight loss data indicates that the goethite quantity varies from 40% to 90%. Electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) indicates that Nirich and Ni-poor goethite are present in the overburden material. A sequential dissolution study indicates that more than 50% of the Ni are present within the goethite lattice as a lattice substitution. The results of pre-concentration studies (size classification, gravity, flotation and magnetic separation) indicate that Ni is richer in finer fractions. Further, the enrichment of Ni content is limited to 1.1% with 50% recovery by classification followed by hydrocyclone separation of the below 53 m m fraction.
