The structural variations occurring in pellets of finely divided mixtures of iron ore and coke breeze, metallized by firing at elevated temperatures, have been examined microscopically. For any given pellet composition, time and temperature are the two most important factors in determining the development of the bonding processes.INTRODUCTIONThe success of sintering and pelletizing processes in the agglomeration of fine iron ores for blast furnace use has brought about rapid changes in thinking relative to methods of preparing furnace burdens. Increases in productivity with the use of sinter emphasize the advantages of a stable, uniformly sized furnace feed. Current practice is to produce a self-fluxing sinter containing most of the lime requirements of the furnace incorporated as a stable medium (Figgis and Charker, 1962). The elimination of fine material from the burden allows greater stack permeability and smoother operation.Sintering and pelletizing of iron ores with or without the incorporation of fluxing compounds has conditioned operators to the extent that it is now considered possible that all components of the burden may eventually be beneficiated in one form or another. Investigations are in hand to improve the quality and sizing of coke, which occupies the major part of the burden volume (Callcott, Innes and Brown, 1961; Innes, Gregory and Worner, 1963). Interest is also being revived in methods of pre-reducing iron ores prior to charging to the furnace (Hansen, Melcher and Fine, 1961). Fully-grouted roof bolts comprise more than 80% of the primary roof supports used in U.S. coal mines. However, nearly 1,500 MSHA reportable, non-injury roof falls occur each year, and most of these are attributable to failure of the roof bolt system. Anchorage failure is one failure mechanism for fully-grouted bolts. As roof deformation works its way upward, the bolts can become heavily loaded near their upper ends. If the applied load exceeds the anchorage, the bolts will simply pull out. Research dating back 30 yrs indicates that this type of anchorage failure is most likely when the roof rock is weak, just where roof support is most critical. In soft shale or coal roof, the small amount of data available in the literature indicates that 20-30 in of resin anchorage may be required to achieve the full capacity of the bolt. In other words, the “full resistance zone” of a 60 in bolt may actually be just 30-40 in. Despite its potential importance, there is no widely accepted anchorage test for fully grouted bolts. Standard pull tests have sometimes been employed, but they provide no information on the anchorage near the top of the bolt. An alternative, first described more than 25 yrs ago in the U.S., is the short-encapsulation pull test (SEPT). With this test, the bolt is installed with only a short (1 ft or less) tube of resin. "In full scale mineral grinding operations, the steel balls normally utilized as auxiliary grinding media get to be consumed at different specific rates, as determined by 3 basic mechanisms: abrasion/corrosion (wear), impact ball breakage and impact surface spalling, the latter relating to the removal of rather small pieces of steel coming off the exposed surface of the balls due to repetitive impact with other balls in the charge or the surrounding mill liners. In conventional ball milling applications, the clearly predominant mechanism is gradual wear by abrasion/corrosion. In the case of SAG mills, where the make-up balls may be as large as 6”f diameter, breakage and spalling mechanisms are significant contributors to total ball consumption, although not to the extent of overriding wear mechanisms.Ball wear has been well characterized by the Linear Wear Theory, as presented at the last CMP 2014. Impact breakage has been customarily monitored, at the ball manufacturing site, via Drop Ball Tests (DBT) consisting of repeatedly dropping balls from a standard height and accounting for the number of broken balls and the weight loss (spalling) of the remaining unbroken balls. When properly conducted, DBT’s should provide meaningful indications of the breakage and spalling resistance of large diameter balls. The current publication is focused on the interpretation and projection of DBT results to full industrial scale, taking into account all 3 mechanisms of grinding media consumption in SAG mills.INTRODUCTIONA thorough, quantitative understanding of the independent contribution of all active grinding media consumption mechanisms is of the highest practical relevance, particularly in semiautogenous (SAG) milling operations where ball breakage and spalling can not be ignored or neglected, as it has been normally acceptable for conventional ball milling processes. The high severity impact conditions currently imposed in typical SAG mill environments create serious challenges to the manufacturers and suppliers of large diameter (5”–6”) SAG balls, whose products must be capable of surviving such harsh operational conditions with minimum breakage or spalling."

Remote sensing, in general, is the recording of light and heat from a planet's surface within a certain range of the electromagnetic spectrum. For the Earth, systems capable of this recording are the MultiSpectral Scanner (MSS) and SLAR. The former is the recording system used in satellite and will be discussed in the next section. SLAR stands for Side Looking Airborne Radar. This device sends invisible radar waves which illuminate the Earth's surface. The reflected waves are subsequently recorded as images. The system can operate through darkness and dense cloud cover, and is particularly suited for the study of geological structures at both large and small scale (Wayland 1976). Remote sensing techniques are now widely being made use of in mineral exploration, especially for those last remote 'sanctuaries' where geological data are meagre or non-existent. For places like Borneo, West Irian, the Amazon Basin etc. remote sensing, in the form of both satellite imagery and SLAR, is of considerable help, in fact more often than not the only help, to delineate geological provinces, geotectonic domains and meaningful lineaments. In the case of New Zealand, well made geological maps at scale 1:250 000 by the Geological Survey are available to the public and these provide useful preliminary grounds for the selection of target areas. However, even in this case LANDSAT imagery can be of aid as will be shown later.

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. Under the requirement to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a broad-scoped project was initiated to quantify the costs associated with operating fuel cell vehicles and diesel vehicles. While ventilation savings are clearly an advantage for the former, a complete and detailed analysis of this and other operational and capital cost elements was undertaken in order to provide the mining industry with factual information in considering the changeover from one technology to another. This paper outlines the results of the investigations to date defining the costs/benefits associated with capital purchases, operations (electrical/diesel, mine air heating fuel, ventilation, openings, surface and underground infrastructure, maintenance, labour, etc.), delivery of energy, regulatory obligations, and mine production. Considerations are given to the type and size of a mining operation, the depth, and location in North America. Significant ventilation power, equipment, and infrastructure savings are possible with the application of fuel cells for shallower mine applications. At depth, where heat is an issue, there is a reduction in benefit. Specific qualifiers such as minimum air velocities, dust dilution, shaft, and heating system velocity limits must be considered on an individual mine basis. While the capital cost for fuel cell mining equipment is currently higher than diesel versions, the high cost of fuel cells is anticipated to be reduced significantly in the near future with the intensification of manufacturing. In either case, the operational savings would probably be sufficient to balance the supplementary capitalization costs. Comprehensive reports have been issued.

"In many mineral processing plants ore is reclaimed from a stockpile using multiple feeders. The discharge from these feeders is combined onto a single conveyor from which total tonnage is measured. Typically, operators set feeder output ratios to adjust the proportion of total tonnage drawn from each feeder. From a process control perspective, this system is not easy to control because the response time of each feeder depends on the distance from the feeder to the weightometer. This paper proposes a simple and elegant process control strategy to manage feeder ratio changes and the associated long and varying process dead-times. Changes in feeder speed are delayed and filtered to compensate for transport delays between feeders. The strategy was evaluated by simulation and installed on a mill feed system.ResumenEn numerosas plantas procesadoras de minerales, el mineral es extraido desde una pila de almacenamiento usando varios alimentadores. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due both to nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustion. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines. Subsequent to these laboratory experiments, six smoke detectors were installed in an underground limestone mine for further testing and evaluation. A series of fault slip seismic events have occurred at Garson mine. The events have occurred during development advancement exposing faults, after the extraction of single stopes due to mining induced stress change, and due to time effects after delays of many days during which no mining had been conducted. This paper discusses the study completed consisting of a global or holistic approach aimed at mitigating some of the risks associated with the structurally controlled rockbursts at Garson. Background Garson mine is located in the south east area of the Sudbury Basin (Ontario, Canada). Mining occurs in two main ore bodies (the #1 Shear and the #4 Shear) which are copper-nickel-sulphide and occur within shear zones that (as well as the ore bodies) strike approximately east-west and dip steeply south. From the north (footwall), lithologies progress (Figure 1a) from norite (NR), to greenstone (GS), and finally to meta-sediment (MTSD). A generally WNW-ESE striking, bifurcated sub-vertical dyke of olivine diabase (OLDI) cuts the series. The current active mining block at Garson is between 4700L and 5100L (levels denote depth in feet below surface).

O avanço tecnológico tem gerado demanda crescente por materiais que possam ser utilizados em alta temperatura e ambientes oxidantes, o que inclui ligas intermetálicas MR–Si–B (MR = metal refratário) com estruturas multifásicas. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a microdureza de ligas do sistema Hf–Si–B na seção isotérmica a 1600ºC, na região rica em Hf. Ligas Hf–Si–B foram fundidas com lâminas de Hf (min. 99,8%), Si (min. 99,998%) e B (min. 99,5%), em forno a arco e tratadas termicamente a 1600 ºC em atmosfera de argônio. As relações de fases nessas ligas foram identificadas por difração de raios-X e por contraste, em imagens obtidas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura no modo elétrons retroespalhados. As ligas tiveram sua dureza medida pelo método Vickers (microdureza) com cargas de 0,05 kgf e 0,2 kgf e tempo de aplicação de 20 s. Os resultados, obtidos da média aritmética das medições realizadas nas regiões heterogêneas de cada liga, mostraram uma dureza média de 11,08 GPa, com pequeno coeficiente de variação de 3,8%. Os boretos HfB2 (19,34 GPa) e HfB (11,76 GPa) apresentaram dureza mais elevada que os silicetos Hf2Si (8,57 GPa), Hf5Si3 (9,63 GPa), Hf3Si2 (11,66 GPa), Hf5Si4 (10,00 GPa), HfSi (10,02 GPa) e HfSi2 (8,61 GPa).

Indian iron ores with less than 62 per cent Fe are currently unexploited, except for a few sectors which export them to foreign countries. It is anticipated that by 2012 the countryÆs domestic steel production is likely to rise to the tune of 60 million tonnes per annum. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to utilise not only the existing high-grade deposits but it is also necessary to look into exploiting the leftover iron ores of lower grades. Hence, reserves with Fe content 62 per cent and below (particularly the ores with In the present paper, an attempt has been made to beneficiate three different types of low-grade iron ores selected from three different parts (states) of the country. In the paper, alternative routes for beneficiation and effective utilisation have been tested using different techniques in the laboratory in an attempt to match their (Al2O3/SiO2) ratio after thorough characterisation and liberation studies. The paper also encompasses the geological formations, occurrences and distribution of Indian iron ores as well as highlighting the problems associated with the fines, possible metallurgical routes, and their market segregation from the perspective of end users.

[Nine wire rope terminations were pull tested and fatigue tested to destruction to measure the termination efficiency and relative fatigue life. The terminations were selected on the basis off mine site visits and the specimen were assembled in a manner similar to industrial slings. To measure a termination's sensitivity to poor workmanship, both standard and modified assembly specimen were tested. Lang and Regular construction of the 6x19 and 6x37 class wire ropes were used in diameters of 13 mm (1/2 in.), 19 mm (3/4 in.), 25 mm (1 in.), 38 mm (1 1/2 in.), and 51 mm (2 in.). In static pull tests rope class, construction, and diameter interacted with the termination to influence the efficiency of the termination. In axial fatigue tests using only the 6x19 class rope, the effect of rope construction was negligible since failure was primarily dependent on the termination type. The Swaged Socket, a termination requiring a high capacity hydraulic press, gave the best overall performance in terms of efficiency and fatigue life. The short body length of the Zinc Poured Socket (RR-S-550) was attributed with the short fatigue life of this termination. The use of thermosetting resins as a replacement for zinc was demonstrated successfully for some socket designs. The fatigue life of the termination, expressed as a percentage of the fatigue life of the wire rope, was shown to be a guide for the retirement of the wire in these applications where the wiry' rope is primarily in axial loading.]

ABSTRACT: The paper is devoted to two major aspects related to the abandonment of salt mines: 1)- Long-term risk associated with the mechanical instability of surface and its consequences for public security and properties. 2)- Long term dissolution and transport of salt resulting from its communication with groundwater. Basic characteristic features of salt deposits and mining methods are presented through the studies already undertaken on French mines. This analysis allows to identify major hazards encountered in different traditional salt mines and solution-mining cavities. In particular, the role of overburden (presence and thickness of salt layer in exploitation roof, presence of clayey rocks or hard rocks e.g. dolomite or anhydrite), presence of water-bearing strata and possibly natural brine levels, discontinuities, etc. are discussed. In the second part, the main features of mechanical behaviour of salt (creep, damage) as well as transfer processes of this material are presented. The influence of these aspects on the long term evolution of abandoned salt mines is then analysed. KEY WORDS: exploitation, abandonment, salt, mechanical, stability, transport, solution, brine. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel bezieht sich auf zwei bedeutende Aspekte beim Salzabbau: 1)-Das langsfristige Risiko zur Bodenoberflächeunbeständigkeit und sein Einfluss über Mensch= und Gütersicherheit. 2)-Die langsfristige Auflösung und Beförderung des Salz beruhen sich auf Studien über französiche Bergbauen. Diese Analyse emöglicht es, die bedeutendesten Risiken in verschiedenen Salzgruben zu identifizieren, bzw. Traditionellen oder durch Auflösung abgebauten. Insbesondere wird die Rolle des Deckgebirges (Vorhandensein und Dicke von Salzschicht am Dach des Grube, Beisein von Tanlager oder hartem Gestein wie Bitterkalk oder Anhydrid), Beisein von wasserhaltigem Boden und/oder gesalzenen Wasserflächen, Trennflächen, usw… erötert. Im zweiten Teil werden die haupsächlichen Eigenschaften des Salzverhaltens (Kriechen und Beschädigung) beschrieben. Les principales caractéristiques de gisements et d’exploitations de sel sont présentées en s’appuyant sur les études antérieures réalisées sur les exploitations en France. Cette analyse permet d’identifier les risques majeurs rencontrés dans différentes mines de sel traditionnelles ou exploitées par dissolution. En particulier, le rôle du recouvrement (présence et épaisseur d’un banc de sel au toit de l’exploitation, présence de terrains argileux ou de roches dures telles que la dolomie ou de l’anhydrite), présence de terrains aquifères ou de nappes salées éventuelles, discontinuités, etc. sont discutées. Dans la deuxième partie, les principaux traits du comportement mécanique du sel (fluage, endommagement) ainsi que les processus de transport de ce matériau sont présentés. L’influence de ces aspects sur le comportement à long terme d’exploitations abandonnées de sel est ensuite analysée. The new Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in the United States (Chinese Embassy) is located in the Embassy Row portion of Northwest Washington DC. The 475,000 ft2 (44,125 m2) structure has five levels below ground and four above, making it the largest embassy in Washington DC. The structure approaches the property line on all sides, and is immediately adjacent to several foreign embassies and a secure U.S. Federal Building. A vertical soil nail wall was used as the primary support of excavation (SOE) system for the project. The soil nail wall was irregularly shaped, benched in areas, and reached total heights up to 98 feet (29.9 m). The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. Tight excavation requirements were defined for the project due to the location of the building relative to the property line, requiring fairly precise wall positions and shotcrete tolerances. Design challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, underground utilities, and seismic impacts from blasting. The paper will focus on the design, construction, and performance of the soil nail SOE system, as well as touch on the logistical and political factors that influenced the design. The paper also notes the Value Engineering and communication approaches that were generated during construction. These efforts resulted in a significant improvement in the quality control and quality assurance exhibited on site, expedited the schedule, and led to significant cost savings to the contractors, engineer, and owner.

A recently developed technique for use in collieries is described in which samples of gas of relatively high vitiation value are obtained from points deep within a developing goaf by means of pipes. This technique prevents dilution of small quantities of carbon monoxide by large quantities of fresh ventilation air and eliminates interference from shotfiring gases. By using the technique it should be possible to assign a characteristic ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen consumed to any district and to predict the onset of heatings.INTRODUCTIONGas analysis has played a vital role in detecting heatings in collieries all over the world. By analysing return air from a district and by calculating the percentage ratio of volume of carbon monoxide found to oxygen consumed (known simply as the "carbon monoxide ratio") it has been found possible, in many cases, to assign a characteristic ratio to a district under consideration. This characteristic ratio serves as an index of the spontan~ous combustion tendency of a goaf area. Any definite and consistent increase in the ratioabove the normal figure· indicates that a heating is developing and hence adequate preparations may be made to deal with the trouble.This ratio technique was developed by Graham (1920-21) who found (Table 1) that the temperature of oxidizing coal was directly related to the ratio obtained from analyses of the effluent gas.Until recently, most attempts to employ a similar technique in collieries working the Greta Seam (N.S.W.) were not successful. Silica reacts with cryolite at 1010°C in two stages. The first stage is the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate of composition consistent with the mineral jadeite (Na20.AI20s.4Si02). The formation proceeds by atleast two different reactions. Formation of alumina or an aluminosilicate proceeds to its limiting value in the first 30 min while the formation of jadeite proceeds at a steady rate until quantitative conversion is achieved after 150 min. The net overall reaction can be expressed by the equation 6 Si02+2 Na3AlF6? (Na20.AI20s.4Si02) +2 SiF4 +4NaF.The second stage involves a slow reaction that proceeds with the evolution of a little SiF4, The net result is the formation of sodium aluminosilicates that are soluble in 30 per cent AlCIs-HCI solutions. While this could be explained by disproportionation of jadeite to form albite (Na20.Al203.6Si02) and nepheline (Na20. AI203.2Si02), it is more likely that it is due to further but limited reaction between the oxides and fiuoroaluminates.

This paper describes the back analysis of the Pavoncelli tunnel, an hydraulic tunnel which was excavated between 1904 and 1915 in South of Italy and experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake. A numerical simulation which is intended to study the behaviour of the tunnel during this seismic event is presented, also accounting for the swelling phenomenon that took place during and after construction.
