1962 was the second year of recovery from the mild 1960-61 recession. The year-to-year gain in constant dollar gross national product, our most comprehensive measure of the country's economic performance, was 6.0 percent (from $447.7 billion in 1961 to $474.8 billion in 1962). The unemployment rate declined from 6.7 percent to 5.6 percent. Although it was a good year, there were still unused resources of labor and capital which implied that the economy was operating below its potential. The year-to-year change in the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production of 7.6 percent masked the fact that more than one-third of the growth took place within 196L The monthly index rose only 4.8 percent during 1962, from 114.3 in January to 117.8 in September. The fact that the economy as shown by the industrial index, rose rapidly in the first half of the year only to remain on a plateau of 119-120 during the second half, led some people to fear an imminent downward turn. This did not occur. Neither production nor consumption of mineral fuels advanced as fast as the total economy. But consumption showed more gain than production, 5 percent compared with somewhat less than 4 percent. Production of both crude oil and natural gas reached new highs while bituminous coal production was the highest in 5 years.

Subsidence due to coal mining is poorly understood by non-specialists. This has led to numerous misconceptions and myths based on limited observations and lack of knowledge. The three most common are: 1. Mine maps are inaccurate. 2. Deep mines are not a problem. 3. If no subsidence has occurred for many years after mining, there is no risk of future subsidence. Maps are important during mining and most are carefully prepared. Future use to evaluate conditions at mine level often includes drilling to confirm what the map shows. Usually, little or no effort is made to tie the surface survey of the property to the mine survey, to conduct a well designed drilling program to confirm the mine map, or to drill test borings vertically. When a mine entry is encountered rather than a coal pillar, or vice versa, and conditions at mine level appear different than anticipated, the first reaction is the mine map is inaccurate. The idea of a safe depth from subsidence is often based on the false premise that mining results in sufficient breakup of the overlying rock strata that bulking compensates for the coal extracted. The safe depth idea first appeared in the literature about 1880 and remained prevalent well into this century. Sadly, it is still encountered. The modern understanding of fragmentation of the immediate mine roof with the overlying beds sagging down on the broken roof rock was first described in 1900. With full extraction mining, either longwall or retreat room and pillar, surface subsidence occurs regardless of the depth of the mine. Subsidence over longwall mines at depths of 2000 feet can be 90 percent of the mined seam thickness. Numerous studies of undermined sites conclude that mining occurred many years ago and since no subsidence has occurred, there is no risk of future movement. This is true if sufficient coal pillars have been left to support the overlying strata. However, every year subsidence occurs over mines that have been closed for 100 years or more. In a study of subsidence incidents over the Pittsburgh Coal, the senior authors found that 50 percent of the incidents occurred above mines that had been closed for at least 50 years and 10 percent over mines closed for at least 80 years.

The rush for alternate iron-units in the last few years spurred a true outbreak of new alternate iron units projects many of them incorporating new process in what can be classified as the.most fruitful and innovative technology outburst, in the steel industry, in decades In a recent paper we focused on what would be, in our opinion, the ultimate targets of the use of alternate iron-units by mini-mills: 1. to improve quality, 2. to reduce cost, 3. to increase plant productivity, and 4. to improve `supplyability'. With these objectives in mind liquid hot-metal, among all possible scrap substitutes, has been proven to be by far the best. This conclusion stems from many different authors who have reviewed the `value in use' of hot-metal against other alternate iron units and measured its impact on steel-shop productivity and cost (Figure 1).

The family of Zn-Al (ZA), Zn-Ag and Zn-Al-Ag (ZINAG) alloys offers high mechanical properties, ease of finishing, the advantage of low energy and pollution-free melting. Also, present alternatives to the well developed alloy systems, such as brasses, bronzes, cast irons and aluminum alloys. The main objective of this paper is to measure thermal parameters in ZA, Zn-Ag and ZINAG hypoeutectic and hypereutectic alloys directionally solidified which present columnar, equiaxed and columnar to equiaxed transition structures (CET). Also, estimate the mechanical properties, such as microhardness and tensile parameters and correlate these with the thermal (cooling rate) and structural parameters (grain size and dendritic spacing). The different types of structures were analyzed with optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed the influence of concentration, microstructural arrangement and thermal conditions during solidification on the mechanical properties. The results of the present investigation are compared with previous experiments.

U.S. demand for building and construction materials, such as construction aggregate, gypsum, and cement, remained strong in 1989. Cement imports declined slightly, representing about 17% of apparent consumption compared with 19% in 1988. Mexico, supplying 29% of the total, was the primary source of imports, followed by Canada with 21 %, Japan with 14%, and Spain and Greece with 10% each. Mexico was also the target of an antidumping petition, filed by producers in Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas, alleging that Mexican cement was being sold in these areas at less than fair value. This was the second petition filed against Mexico in the last 3 years. The International Trade Commission made a preliminary determination that the cement industry in these regions was materially injured by Mexican imports. U.S. demand improved for construction aggregate for the fourth consecutive year and was at a near-record level. The U.S. gypsum industry performed well, even though new housing starts decreased for the third consecutive year. Increased U.S. exports of gypsum wallboard and strength in the remodeling markets offset the impact of declining housing starts.

Abstract. Study on nonlinear damage localization process of rocks under water chemical corrosion is a more interesting topic in rock mechanics research world widely. It is very important in estimating long term stability of rock engineering, design of nuclear waste repository and its performance estimation, geothermal and petroleum development. This paper reports that new development of study on the topic, including methodology, results of meso-mechanical test, real-time CT scan test and acoustic emission test, temporal fractal behaviors, neural dynamic modeling and chemical-induced damage law, etc. This paper also discusses the research directions of the topic in the near future. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchung zum durch die chemische Corrosion induzierten Schaedigungsprozess ist einer der Trends im Gebiet der Felsmechanik. Sie ist zugleich ein sehr wichtiges Forschungsprojekt u.a. fuer geotechnische Langzeitstabilitaetsanalyse, Langzeitsicherheit eines Endlagers, Erdwaerme- und Erdoelfoerderung. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die neusten Entwicklungen in den folgenden Teilgebieten zusammen: Untersuchungsmethoden, Laborversuchsergebnisse der Mikromechanik, der Computer-Tomographie und der akustischen Emission, zeitabhaengige Fraktaleigenschaften, Modelle fuer die Nervendynamik sowie Modelle fuer chemie-induzierte Schaedigungen. Zum Schluss werden kuenftige Forschungsschwerpunkte bzw. –richtungen diskutiert. Résumé L’étude du processus de la localisation de l’endommagement du à l’érosion chimique est un thème d’actualité pour la mécanique des roches. Elle est également un sujet de recherche d’importance dans l’évaluation de la stabilité à long terme des ouvrages rocheux, l’analyse du system de stockage des déchets nucléaires et l’évaluation de son comportement, l’exploitation de l’énergie thermique et pétrolifère, etc. Cet article présente le développement actuel dans ce domaine, incluant la méthodologie d’étude sur le processus de la localisation de l’endommagement dû à l’érosion chimique, l’analyse des essais mécaniques avec l’observation microscopique, du balayage en temps réel (CT), et de l’émission acoustique. On aborde ainsi modèle des caractéristiques fractural du temps, le modèle de la mécanique dynamique neural, ainsi que la loi de comportement d’endommagement dû à l’effet chimique. The Silver Spring Transit Center is a new three-level transit center that will include bus loops for County, Metro and intercity buses, parking, and retail space. It replaces an existing bus station and connects to a busy metro rail station in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Significant site constraints in both plan and profile had to be dealt with in developing a design for support of the structure. Over 90 rock-socketed drilled shafts ranging in size from 3 to 7 foot in diameter were ultimately used to accommodate the limited space and large column loads, and to adapt to the variable rock surface at the site. Site access during design was limited due to the existing active bus station, so contract documents were adapted to include further explorations. Differences in anticipated and actual field conditions regarding the depth, quality, and variability of the rock had to be overcome in construction. Osterberg Load Cell testing during construction allowed for verification and optimization of the shaft design. Additional issues dealt with on this constrained site in an urban setting included construction staging issues, such as working around specialty contractors for tieback walls, blasting operations for rock excavation, productions issues for hard bedrock, as well as coordination issues with third parties, most notably the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority. Aspects of the foundation design and optimization, preparation of the contract documents to deal with the complicated nature of the project, and lessons learned from construction are also discussed.

Asimismo, este no requiere de un pretratamiento condicional, no afecta la recuperación del zinc, mejora el grado del concentrado y la concentración de iones cromatos después del tratamiento está por debajo del límite permisible establecido por el Reglamento de la Ley General de Aguas.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. APPROXIMATELY 26 percent of the total ore production to date from the largest single deposit of copper-bearing material in the world was mined during the war years, 1942 to 1945, at Chile Exporation Company's great open-pit mine at Chuquicamata, Chile. About 18 percent of the total waste removed during the life of the mine was handled in the same period. The total of ore and waste represents approximately 24 percent of the total material that has been excavated from the pit. This is more than was removed in the first fourteen years of operation from 1914 through 1927. "Misty Mountain Gold Limited (MGL - TSE VSE, MGLCF - NASDAQ) of Vancouver, owns the Harmony Gold Project located in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. The deposit contains a mineable reserve of 2.3 million ounces of gold, at a 1.2 g/t cut-off and an average grade of 2.1 1 g/t Au.Discovered in 1970 and frequently investigated by previous owners, full-scale production has not yet occurred because of the complex metallurgy of the deposit. Recent process studies that were completed in six months at Process Research Associates Ltd. (PRA) of Vancouver resulted in significant improvements to the project viability. The work involved detailed mineral processing studies aimed at achieving a marketable concentrate. An option for bio-oxidation and cyanidation to allow on-site dor6 production was also investigated.The main findings at PRA followed the front-end recovery of finely divided free gold (Au) by gravity concentration. Approximately 20% of Au reported to less than 0.2% of the mass, resulting in a grade exceeding 500g/t Au. The resulting gravity tailing provided a uniform feed for flotation evaluation. The optimization of this step allowed for a reasonable primary grind size of 80% passing (&) 50pm. Efficient slime’s rejection was made possible by flotation at a reduced pulp density, and pre-oxidized sulphides were reactivated with Na,S. The regrinding of the bulk flotation concentrate followed by up to five stages of cleaning resulted in a combined gravity + flotation product of 50g/t Au with 82% recovery in less than 4% of the feed mass.Further studies indicated that the flotation concentrate was amenable also to tank bio-oxidation. At 65% sulphide oxidation the gold recovery improved from less than 70% to 90% by cyanide extraction using CIL (carbon in leach). This compares to less than 45% gold recovery from whole-ore cyanidation in several previous studies. Heap leaching may also be considered for lower grade material. PRA’s methodical approach and consistent results dispelled the uncertainty about predicting the material behavior for the Harmony Property."

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) technique to measure the integrity of coal ribs. The CPRR characterizes the rib composition and evaluates its impact on the inherent stability of the coal ribs. The CPRR utilizes four parameters: rib homogeneity, bedding condition, face cleat orientation with respect to entry direction, and rib height. All these parameters are measurable in the field. A rib data collecting procedure and a simple sheet to calculate the CPRR were developed.

"The purpose of the project is to convert current shuttle car utilization on an underground coal mine to best practice by focusing on change-out points and tramming routes, which have a major influence on shuttle car away times. Time studies were an integral part of the project as these enabled the determination of shuttle car away times. An indirect proportional relationship between shuttle car away times and productivity is established. Through the time studies, it is deduced that a third shuttle car will make an insignificant contribution to production when there is only one split open. During this time, maintenance on the third car can be optimized. In order to satisfy the mine’s key performance indicator of keeping shuttle car away times less than 75 seconds, a belt extension must be scheduled after the third split is open. It is established that at any given time, a minimum of two shuttle cars should be used. When cutting on the left-hand-side of the belt road with only two shuttle cars available, the centre and left (left of the feeder breaker) shuttle cars should be used for coal hauling. When cutting on the right-hand-side, the centre and the right-hand-side cars should be used. If only one shuttle car is available, the centre car is the most efficient to use. Alternative anchoring configurations can be employed so as to enable cars (left or right, especially) to reach the opposite extremities of the panel and hence minimize cable length restrictions. The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

La planta de lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electrodeposición (L-SX-EW) de Southern Perú es una operación hidrometalúrgica dedicada a la lixiviación ácido – bacteriana de los botaderos de mineral de baja ley de la Mina Toquepala, para la producción de cobre catódico de la más alta pureza. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la evolución del sistema de control y supervisión de esta planta minera en Cuajone. Para ello, dicha planta debe tener una actualización constante de sus sistemas de control y ser capaz de cambiar con la velocidad a la que avanza la tecnología de Control de Procesos. Asimismo, debe contar con personal calificado que permita el desarrollo y modernización de los sistemas sea continuo y no dependa solo de expansiones y ampliaciones ejecutadas por especialistas externos. De forma que este software de supervisión, no solamente considera la capacidad de operar la planta, si no debe ser una ayuda tanto para el operador como para brindar información en la correcta toma de decisiones.

An irreversible state causes inhomogeneity of the stress distribution on the mass. A destressed zone develops along a working panel, and worked out panels are deprived of the destressing. The inhomogeneity is smoothed out during elapsed time.

A major problem in open pit mine planning is to determine the optimum pit limit of the mine. The optimum pit limit is the one with maximum discounted net profit and satisfies technical conditions. A number of optimisation techniques have been proposed for determination of pit limits. Among these techniques, those based on graph theory are suitable to solve the three-dimensional (3D) problem. In this paper, two maximum flow methods named, Dinic's algorithm and Push-Relabel algorithm have been used to find the optimum pit limit of an iron ore mine. This method has been implemented in Gol-e-Gohar iron mine in south east of Iran in order to find the final pit limit. Issues, like properties of the mine and orebody, are studied. These properties include wall slope, sulfur and phosphor grade restrictions. The result shows that these properties have significant effect on the determined pit limit.
