Deep-sea hydrothermal vents (hereafter chimneys) are commonly found on the new crust forming along divergent plate boundaries. Related to the chimney cycle from birth to death, it is hard to define the growth stage of the chimney due to a brief life span of the venting hydrothermal plume. Here we try to categorize the mineral magnetic properties of the chimneys according to their venting fluid-temperatures. Hydrothermal sulfide deposits in the Southwest Pacific were explored in 2012 and chimneys were collected using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and Grab with AV camera (GTV). In the present study, mineral magnetic properties of three Cu-rich chimneys were measured: a high-temperature chimney showing a venting fluid-temperature of about 200°C (ROV01); a lowtemperature chimney of about 80°C (GTV01); and an inactive chimney (ROV02). The chimneys were sliced to ~1 cm intervals from core to outer margin. Magnetic properties of ROV01 are dominated by pyrrhotite, except for the most outer part that experienced severe oxidation. Concentration and grain-size of pyrrhotite are relatively low and fine respectively. In the GTV01, pyrrhotite, dominant in the core, is gradually mixed with hematite toward the outer margin of the chimney due to secondary oxidation. Both the concentration and grain-size of the magnetic minerals are greater compared to the GTV01. High concentration and large grain-size of magnetic minerals characterize ROV02. Dominant magnetic phases are pyrrhotite, hematite, and goethite. In particular, the most outer margin shows the presence of magnetite produced possibly by magnetotactic bacterial activity. Such distinctive contrast in magnetic concentration, grain-size, and mineralogy among three different types of chimneys enables the life stage of the Cu-rich chimneys to be determined through a mineral magnetic study.

In 1970, the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with Theodore Barry and Associates, a management consulting firm, to perform a one-year industrial engineering study of working-face hazards in underground bituminous coal mines. The field data was accumulated from industrial engineering observations in fifty underground mines. Supporting data for the analysis was derived primarily from the Bureau's fatal accident reports for the years 1966 through 1970. This report, Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Underground Coal Mine Production, consists of three main parts: 1) The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis, 2) The Industrial Engineering Analysis, and 3) Multiflow Process Charts and Standard Time Data. The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis (Volume I, Section II) is based upon individual USBM fatal accident reports for 1966-1970. These were read, coded and computerized in terms of 84 significant variables. Cross-tabulations of these variables have been used to identify major underground hazards and to quantify significant causal factors. A very strong relationship was found to exist between fatal accident occurrences and low task experience. This led to a recommendation for formalized training, certification and supervision programs for miners. Victim compliance with federal regulations, mine regulations and supervisor instructions was analyzed, indicating that supervisors provide the most crucial communication link to workers. Thus, every attempt should be made to ensure the competence of immediate supervisors in the industry. Analysis of roof fall variables revealed a fatal propensity on the part of the miners to work under unsupported roof or under support conditions that are marginal. The technical approach to the problem is to make it physically impossible for a miner to work under these conditions; the behavioral approach is to ensure adequate training and develop proper safety attitudes among the miners. The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis revealed a need for normalizing data to interpret the results more accurately.

Keywords: stainless steel, AOD refining, side and top combined blowing, mixing characteristics, water modeling The fluid mixing characteristics in the bath during the side and top combined blowing AOD (argon-oxygen decarburization) refining process of stainless steel have preliminarily been studied on a water model unit of a 120 t AOD converter. The geometric similarity ratio between the model and its prototype (including the side tuyeres and the top lances) was 1:4. On the basis of the theoretical calculations for the parameters of the gas streams in the side tuyeres and the top lances, the gas blowing rates used for the model have more reasonably been determined. The influence of the tuyere number and position arrangement, and the gas flow rates for side and top blowing on the characteristics has been examined. The results demonstrated that the liquid in the bath underwent vigorous circulatory motion during gas blowing, without obvious dead zone in the bath, resulting in a well mixing effectiveness. The gas flow rate of the main tuyere had a governing role on the characteristics, a suitable increase in the gas flow rate of the subtuyere could improve mixing efficiency, and the gas jet from top lance could make the mixing time prolong. Corresponding to the oxygen top blowing rate specified by the technology, a roughly equivalent and good mixing effectiveness could be reached by using six side tuyeres with an angle of 27° between each tuyere, and five side tuyeres with an angular separation of 22.5° or 27° between each tuyere. The relationships of the mixing time with the gas blowing rates of main-tuyeres and sub-tuyeres and top lance, the angle between each tuyere, and the tuyere number have been obtained.

"The common-held view of the future of copper mining is one of declining quality of mineral resources and increasingly limited long-term development options. This decline, in turn, is viewed as inevitably leading to increasing economic, socio-political and environmental costs. As a result, new technologies and innovations will be required to mitigate cost escalation. The future is therefore typically summarised as a battle of a ‘below-ground’ declining quality asset base pushing costs upward versus ‘above-ground’ technology and innovation driving costs downward. The role that high quality new mineral discoveries could play in mitigating industry cost pressures is typically understated, if considered at all. New high quality discoveries can be mined at lower cost than existing assets and potentially if discovered in the right locations within a more amenable contemporary environmental and socio-political setting. Such deposits, once discovered, would improve the overall quality of the industry asset base, as well as benefitting their owners substantially through higher margins. However, to target new high quality deposits explorers need some understanding of the nature of high quality copper mines in the long-term future. Conventional scientific and economic techniques for analysing the future of copper supply, generally by studying the project pipeline, ignore as yet undiscovered resources and also struggle to fully incorporate the multiple internal and external factors that could impact upon copper mining practices in the future.Scenario analysis is specifically designed to consider multiple factors interacting in the future, and is thus more creative than simply looking at the visible project pipeline. The use of scenarios is therefore potentially capable of providing insight into aspects of the future of copper mining about which little is currently known or that remains considerably uncertain. In this study, the Oxford University Scenarios methodology was employed to analyse different plausible futures for copper mining and the consequent implications for exploration targeting strategies. The scenario analysis highlights two key dimensions or axes that serve to map out potential industry futures: firstly the technical and economic optimisation of the existing industry; and secondly the generation of new prospects or ‘search space’ for the copper industry. These two axes in turn frame four different scenarios for the future of the copper mining industry. These copper mining scenarios are then compared to the 20 largest existing copper mines and projects, and their owners, to determine if any represent an appropriately robust exploration targeting proxy: none do. The paper therefore concludes that efforts by industry are required to generate mine concepts that would be viable across all scenarios, and thus act also as exploration targeting proxies. In the interim, companies will have to seek to build portfolios that create an overall robust asset base, out of individually less robust assets. Failure to do this implies that consequential, irreversible strategic decisions lie ahead for the copper mining industry, which may be a threat to both incumbents and the very industry itself. The Bunker Hill Mine, located in north Idaho, consists of over 150 miles of passageways within highly fractured and faulted Precambrian metamorphosed rocks. The Bunker Hill Mine was at one time a major producer of lead and zinc; currently it is on inactive but maintained status. Ground water moving along flow paths that have been disturbed by mining reacts with pyrite and oxygen to produce acid water within the mine. Discharge of this acid water averages more than 5 cubic feet per second, with an average zinc concentration of 160 mg/L and pH of 2.8. Treatment of this acid mine drainage is required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Cessation of all underground activities at the Bunker Hill Mine will not terminate the production of acid mine drainage. Reclamation alternatives that could either reduce the quantity or Improve the quality of the drainage upon mine closure are highly attractive. This project is directed towards delineation of reclamation alternatives based upon an understanding of the characteristics of ground water recharge near the mine. A variety of field techniques were used to identify areas of rapid infiltration and to investigate the ground water flow system associated with the upper portion of the mine in a portion of the Milo Creek drainage. These techniques include Installation of piezometer nests, dye tracing, surface resistivity, dye dilution, spring surveys, and hydrochemical analyses. Sites of direct Infiltration into the mine have been located. These include mine workings directly below perennial streams, intersections between streams and faults, and a caved area adjacent to an ephemeral stream. Results of these investigations indicate that recharge through these sites is not as rapid as suggested by previous studies. Inflow to the underground workings from the ground water flow system around the margin of the mine may account for more mine water than sites of direct infiltration. Recharge control at areas of direct infiltration could result in a net decrease in the quantity of acid drainage from the Bunker Hill Mine. Locations suggested for recharge control are West Milo Creek above the Guy Caving Area, the intersections of the Cate Fault with South Milo and Milo Creeks, and an area of Milo Creek below the Milo Creek Dam that overlies shallow mine workings.

The term "Ichtnyol" is a name applied loosely to certain preparations used in pharmacy. These preparations do not occur as such in nature but are manufactured by various chemical processes. Ichthyol is the name trademarked for a product manyfactured by the Irhthyel-Gescllschaft (Cordes Hermanni & Co.) of Hamburg, Germany, and marketed in thin, country by Merck & Co., Inc., (5, 86, 87)3/. Although used in the literature rather loosely, the correctly applied word refers to the product obtained by sulphonating and then neutralizing with ammonia a distillate from the oil retorted from a certain high-sulphur bituminous shale found near the village of Seefeld in the Austrian Tyrol. Due to the fact that fossils of fish and marine animals occur in the limestone associated with the bituminous shale, these deposits have long been known as, the "lchthyolite schistc of Seefeld" ( 55) . The Greek word "ichthys"" for fish and the Latin word "oleum" for oil are the words from which the term is derived. The crude, tarry shale oil, whose distillate is the raw material for the sulphonation process, has been referred to since the Middle Ages as "Dürsten" or "Tirschen" oil, and the term "ichthyel oil" has been used occasionally in the literature to designate the retorted crude oil (92, 93, 106, 117). The first application of the name "Ichthyol" to a particular product is credited to Schröter (35, 129). Various names for products manufactured by sulphonating bituminous distillates have been coined, and in some of these names the root from the word ichthys has been retained. Some of these names can be found in New and Nonofficial Remedies under the heading, Sulphoichthyolate Preparation, and Substitutes (5).

Discarded automobiles represent the greatest single resource of reusable metals, plastics, and rubber in the United States. This report presents results of Bureau of Mines research, conducted from 1965 to 1983, on separating and recovering useful materials from the scrapped hulks, using old and new metallurgical techniques combined with standard scrapyard methods. The Bureau determined the materials composition of three composite cars designated as circa 1960, mid-1970's, and early 1980's, and used these cars to study smokeless incineration and hand-sorting techniques. In studies on treating rejects from automobile shredders, the Bureau designed a process that included air classification, water elutriation, magnetic separation, handpicking, and heavy-medium separation, and also investigated cryogenics and liquation. Complete recovery of cop-per and other metals was economically made by hand and tool dismantling, leaching, or selective melting of starters and generators. Techniques are also discussed for plastic recovery and waste tire treatment.

The present final report constitutes the total productivity of a series of contracts from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences over the period 1971-1979. The emphasis on the research has been analytical. In this "executive summary" we give a succinct description of each phase of the investigation. In the first phase of the investigation that was stimulated by the National Academy of Engineering, we concentrated on the analytical studies of techniques relevant to mine rescue. Several specific procedures for locating a buried source were analyzed. In the next, but overlapping phase of the investigation, we dealt with the fundemental character of how electromagnetic waves propagate in mine tunnels. At the outset we allowed for the finite conductivity of the tunnel walls and the presence of axial conductors such as cables, pipes, and tracks. The third phase of the investigation was devoted to the analyses of various specific geophysical engineering problems. The related fourth phase dealt with the general subject of non-destructive testing of wire ropes such as used for mine hoists.

This report presents the results of an extensive laboratory testing program to determine the physical properties of shotcrete including the use of fast-set agents, controlled set cements, and both wet and dry shotcreting equipment. Shotcrete was placed under simulated field conditions using the dry and wet processes. Mechanical properties obtained for accelerated and nonaccelerated shotcretes include compressive, flexural, and shear strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio, and shear and tensile properties of shotcrete bonded to coal, sandstone, and shale. Physical properties measured were unit weight and permeability to methane gas. The data show that rapid setting shotcrete has the potential for improved coal mine ground control. There is no clear evidence that either wet or dry process shotcrete is superior to the other; however, indications are that regulated set cement is preferred to cement containing fast-setting admixtures.

"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

"INTRODUCTIONOnce again deep-sea mining has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Industrial and political advancements also call for environmental baseline studies and analyses to aid the development of standards and monitoring protocols. As part of the EU research project “JPI Oceans: Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining”, the RV Sonne cruise SO242 to the Peru Basin revisited the DISCOL area that had been artificially disturbed in 1989. This offered the unique opportunity to study a deep-sea site 26 years after a disturbance similar to manganese nodule mining had been carried out (Figure 1). A comparison of a variety of undisturbed and disturbed sites shed light on the re-establishment of a geochemical equilibrium and a range of baseline values. This information can help to inform standard development for monitoring and mining purposes.Heavy metal data and its applicationResearch findingsDuring the cruise, disturbed and undisturbed surface sediment was sampled. The pore water analyses show that the 26 years old disturbance is not visible in the metal profiles and that the pore water reaches equilibrium through diffusive fluxes relatively quickly. The sediment, however, shows some differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in the upper 20 cm, even after 26 years. Lower concentrations in the usually manganese-oxide rich top layer, variations and “unnatural” peaks in the manganese profiles, for example, suggest removal or mixing of the top layer (Figure 2)."

A multiple coal fired boiler house provides steam for utility usage in various production plants. Maintaining stable header pressure and boiler availability is of critical importance for downstream consumers. Advanced Process Control comprising of a G2 based expert system and Model Predictive Control was implemented to improve the boiler house performance. The results yielded improvements in the main header pressure stability, reduction in boiler saturation and significant saving in coal consumption. The underground car park "Admonterhof in the historical centre of Graz is an example for the technical and economical success of a complicated structural design using a concept on the basis of the observational method. The intention to built a 20 m deep excavation beneath a protected monument was accompanied by some essential issues: the preservation of the existing state avoiding extensive displacements by means of a girder grid of reinforced concrete, its support on large bored piles and small steel-tube piles with possible active compensation of differential settlements, the excavation support in none built-up areas with secant bored piles, the underpinning of existing buildings with different structures by means of jet grouting. Furthermore the hydraulic gradient and the permeability of a rock formation in a part of the excavation had to be explored with the purpose to control the inflow of groundwater with a level difference of more than 10 m.

"A new device has been developed to directly measure the bubble loading of particle-bubble aggregates in industrial flotation machines, both mechanical flotation cells as well as flotation column cells. The bubble loading of aggregates allows for in-depth analysis of the operating performance of a flotation machine in terms of both pulp/collection zone and froth zone performance. This paper presents the methodology along with an example showing the excellent reproducibility of the device and an analysis of different operating conditions of the device itself.The device has been used to investigate the froth selectivity of attached particles. Simultaneous measurements were made using a different froth recovery measurement technique in the same flotation cell. A comparison of these techniques shows that in this case, particles are selectively detached from bubbles at or near the pulp-froth interface.INTRODUCTIONA flotation cell can be considered to operate in two distinct phases or zones; namely the pulp or collection phase and the froth phase. The pulp zone is responsible for the formation of hydrophobic particle-bubble aggregates, whilst the froth phase is responsible for the separation of these aggregates from surrounding suspended hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles. Thus, the froth phase is the grade determining phase in flotation. A measurement of the bubble load (the mass of particles attached to air bubbles in units of mass/volume) will enable the analysis of the performance of both the collection zone at creating bubble-particle aggregates and also the froth zone at separating these aggregates from surrounding pulp.A measure of froth zone performance that has been used extensively in flotation research is the Froth Recovery, Rf, of a particular system. Froth recovery is defined as the mass of particles collected in the concentrate launder by true flotation as a fraction of the mass of particles entering the froth phase. The measurement of bubble load allows for this term to be calculated easily, rather than having to go through the laborious task of, for example, changing froth depths to determine this performance criterion (Contini et al., 1988; Vera et al., 1999b; Feteris et al., 1987)."

"INTRODUCTION The Rodessa oil field in Marion and Cass Counties, Tex., Miller County, Ark., and Caddo Parish, La., was discovered in August 1930, when a well drilled to a depth of 5,506 feet in Caddo Parish, close to the surface trace of the Rodessa fault, produced gas in commercial quantities. During the next 5 years 21 gas wells were drilled, and a large reserve of natural gas was developed in the high part of the Rodessa structure underlying the Massive Anhydrite member of the Glen Rose formation.In July 1935 oil was discovered on the flank of the structure when a well drilled to 6,048 feet also in Caddo Parish, was completed as an oil well. The discovery of oil in the Rodessa structure initiated art intensive development program of more than usual interest to geologists, engineers, and operators in the petroleum and natural-gas industry. The complex nature of the different reservoirs, the large volume of ""free"" gas under high pressures and temperatures in the upper part of the reservoirs, and the high gas:oil ratios of some of the wells during the early production of oil presented many problems the solution of which taxed the ingenuity of those responsible for the development and exploitation of the Rodessa field.Early waste of gas and resultant dissipation of reservoir energy led to State intervention, which brought about effective regulation of the quantity of gas blown to the air. Oil production from wells producing more than 2.000 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil was restricted, and oil allowables generally were based equally upon acreage and upon reservoir pressures. Consequently, oil-production statistics of the field are closely associated with gas:oil ratios and reservoir pressures.The primary object of this report is to present factual and statistical data on well performance in the Rodessa field and to show established trends under certain operating methods and practices in high-pressure gaseous reservoirs, which have been carefully developed and outlined by modern technique and exploited under close engineering supervision.The large size of the Rodessa field, it’s fairly well defined gas caps, and a somewhat definite water table in a part- of the oil- and gas-producing region are of special interest and importance in a study of the fluid and energy relationships in reservoirs. Consequently, the results of much of the authors' work in collecting and compiling date are presented in the form of tables, maps and cross sections to show the relative thicknesses of the different oil-and gas-producing members and their permeability and porosity relationships, and, when possible, the variations in stratigraphy are exhibited in cross sections. Results of a detailed analysis of cores from a number of wells also are presented in tabular and graphic form."

"SWOT analyses and the closely related TOWS matrix are frequent starting points for an organization to develop its strategy. The paper deals with the evaluation of the TOWS matrix and presents three novel approaches to evaluate the different factors of the TOWS matrix, namely (1) approach to evaluate the factors with identical weights; (2) approach to evaluate factors with their weights determined within the different quadrants of the TOWS matrix; and (3) approach to evaluate factors with weights determined within the whole TOWS matrix. The third approach has two variants. The proposed approaches to evaluate the TOWS matrix were tested on a SWOT analysis of a significant mining company in the Czech Republic. The results imply that the strategy W-T (weaknesses-threats) is recommended in three cases, while the strategy S-T (strengths-threats) is recommended once. The paper may be valuable for managers responsible for strategic planning.IntroductionThe process of human needs gratification has been closely connected with raw material resources of the planet. In the contemporary socio-economic conditions, the task of the mining company managers, apart from extracting mineral resources, is to meet the owners' intents.The managerial work itself becomes very complex. In mining companies in particular, the complexity is augmented by the characteristics of the business. Undoubtedly, the key factor is that mineral resources cannot be renewed or relocated. Stojanovi (2013) characterizes mining projects as involving great investments in finance and time, as well as consecutive decisions and a 'complex mosaic of numerous unknown factors that affect the value of the project'. He adds that mining projects are typified by a 'number of geological, technological, technical, economic, environmental, social, and financial risks' (Stojanovi , 2013).Inter alia, the managerial work may also be intese due to the dynamic internal and external conditions for the existence of any company (Vane? k, 2014). This tallies with Peter Drucker’s prediction in 1969; that the times at the turn of the millennium could be expected to be turbulent (Drucker, 1969)."
