Fibrous minerals are common in nature but asbestiform minerals are rare. The unique mineralogical characteristic common to all the asbestos minerals is their morphologic form (or habit of crystallization) as polyfilamentous fiber bundles. The individual fibrils within the bundles have a tendency to be very long with a narrow range of diameters and grow with their long fiber axis in parallel orientation to the bundle length. The asbestiform habit imparts to the asbestos minerals sufficient flexibility and tensile strength so that most can be woven into cloth. In the past application has focused on their ability to insulate against the transfer of heat. Known epithermal deposits in the Coromandel region belong to the low-sulphidation type, represented by three subtypes: (1) andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, (2) rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, and (3) andesite-hosted polymetallic veins. Paleo-depths for a range ofdeposits are estimated using various features including: paleo-surface indicators (e.g. sinters), hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and alteration mineralogy. Paleo-depth estimates to the base of the ore zone for the rhyolite-hosted Coromandel deposits are in the range 200 to 500 m. Andesite-hosted Au-Ag deposits have more variable paleo-depths, and are deeper (up to 950 m) in those deposits with base metals at depth. The majority of Coromandel Au-Ag deposits have limited depth extents (<200 m) of economic grade mineralisation, although Waihi and Karangahake are notable exceptions with depth extents of 575 m and 700 m respectively. Limited depth extents of economic ore are a feature of epithermal systems worldwide and are commonly attributed to gold deposition from boiling fluids. Under hydrostatic conditions in epithermal/geothermal systems, boiling in an up-flowing hydrothermal fluid is controlled by the boiling point for depth (BPD) curve. From fluid inclusion studies of many low-sulphidation epithermal systems, deposition of electrum in economic concentrations appears to be confined to a temperature window of 260 to 180¦C. This means that for dilute, gas-poor fluids that follow the BPD curve, gold deposition is limited to a vertical depth zone of about 400 m, with its upper boundary at about 100 m below the ground surface. The greater depth extent at Waihi and Karangahake, can be explained by mixing of/a deep, hot (300¦C) fluid with cooler (c. 200¦C) heated ground waters. This has the effect of lowering the 260¦C isotherm by up to 300 m, thereby increasing the depth range of economic grade gold deposition within the 260 to 180¦Cwindow of electrum deposition.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. The behavioral accident simulator (BAS) is a computer program that can be used to simulate accident situations. It demonstrates how the potential to have an accident grows or diminishes as a result of changes in various environmental, organizational, and behavioral factors. It calculates the number of fatalities that may result from various conditions and graphically displays these data. The BAS is useful for studying systems of accident causes, for demonstrating the various ways to diminish fatalities, and for training employees. This Bureau of Mines report provides the detailed instructions needed to use the BAS.

Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

The ISASMELT? top submerged lance (TSL) bath smelting process was developed in Mount Isa, Australia by Mount Isa Mines Limited (now a subsidiary of Xstrata plc) during the 1980s. By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 8 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, in which role it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and platinum group metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

Keywords: sinter, characterization, agglomeration, iron ore Iron ore sinters are the main burden of blast furnaces for pig iron production. The evaluation of these agglomerates is very important due to their properties affect indirectly the productivity and costs of production of the steel industry. In the sintering plants, the standard procedure of sinter assessment has been carried out by particle size control, bulk chemical analyses, tumbler and/or shatter tests and determination of reduction degradation and reducibility indexes. Microscopy techniques have just been applied to characterize sinters produced in pilot conditions, however, these techniques, the classical ones and the less traditional, allow enhancing the industrial sintering process assessment. For investigation of the phases, microstructures and fabric, reflected-light and scanning electron microscopy(backscattered electrons images) were used; for micro analytical chemical examination, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry; for Kikuchi patterns registers, electron backscattering diffraction. In addition to the microscopy techniques, the magnetic behavior was depicted by means of magnetic susceptibility measurements. Iron ore sinters are made up by hematite, magnetite, silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium and silicates. These phases develop either during sintering or, in some proportion, represent remnants of ores and fluxes; this is the case of some hematite and Mg-bearing silicate, respectively. From the magnetic susceptibility results, three different behaviors were determined, which are directly related to the magnetiteproportion in the samples. The phase association and proportion, the sintering conditions andthe quality assessment are some features appraised by such procedures, which reveal themagnitude of this proposal in sintering plants.

It is well-established that hydrostatic pressure distribution is hardly achieved during uniaxial compaction of powders. All the previous investigations1-4 give consistent results and this variation is attributed to the die-wall friction. The conclusions are based on measurements of the density of very small portions of the compact. Although the analysis of the density or the strain distribution in the compact is very helpful in obtaining information about the stress distribution within a powder compact, it does not describe the problem from a more fundamental point of view. The densification in metal powder compacts takes place chiefly by plastic deformation (ignoring particle rearrangement) at the points of contact of the powder particles. The onset of yielding and subsequent growth of the contact areas (for spherical powders) take place fixed by a constant stress equal to three times the yield stress in tension or compression,5-7 assuming little or no work hardening. Therefore, by deforming spherical powders in the die and measuring the contact areas on each particle, the load at each contact point can be determined. In the present investigation, this was done by hot-pressing uniform spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The details of the experiment have been described elsewhere.' The spheres were studied for the size and the number of contact points on each particle using a specially designed goniometer. It was found that the deformed faces that were approximately normal to the direction of pressing were about 2.2 times larger than those parallel to the direction of pressing. Fig. 1 shows the typical deformed sphere. A detailed study showed that the mean value of the contact areas on each sphere was within 5 pct for all the spheres in the die (ignoring those touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die).' The spheres touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die were found to have larger contact areas (8 to 10 pct) which indicates higher pressures in these regions of the compact and thus higher compact densities in these regions. These results show that density distribution calculated from such an experiment will give results consistent with the previous investigators. One of the most common critical areas of longwall mining in terms of ground stability are the gateroad and bleeder entries. These critical entries provide much-needed safe access for miners and allow for adequate ventilation required for dilution of hazardous airborne contaminants and must remain open during mining of a multi-panel district. This paper focuses on the stability of the longwall entries subjected to a single abutment load such as bleeders, first tailgate, and last headgate. First tailgate and last headgate are also referred to as blind headgates and tailgates. A study of a longwall district through conditions mapping, support evaluations, and numerical modeling was conducted and evaluated by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The condition mapping and support evaluations were performed on entries that spanned the previous five years of mining and relied on a diverse selection of supports to maintain the functionality of the entry. Numerical modeling was also conducted to evaluate various support types with further investigation and comparison to the condition mapping. The study demonstrated the importance of the abutment load decay versus distance from the gob edge, the potential for a reduction in material handling related injuries, as well as optimal usage of secondary and standing support.

"Underground operation.In its broader sense the term ""mining"" is applied to all processes whereby raw materials are taken from the earth to be used as sources of mineral products. In a more restricted sense ""mining"" is applied to underground operations as contrasted with open pit work designated as quarrying. The tern is used in the restricted tense in this paper; for it relates to the exploitation of limestone deposits by modern methods of underground operation rather than by open pit methods.Present tendency toward miningIt may seem to some readers that a paper on mining limestone will find little general interest among lime plant operators, for only a limited number of them have yet resorted to this means of procuring raw materials. It is noteworthy, however, that a growing tendency exists toward underground operation, for one by one quarry owners are faced with increasing difficulties in open pit operation. It seems desirable, therefore, for operators to keep closely in touch with this gradual change in process, to inquire into the underlying causes, to compare costs, and to study the effects of the change in method on subsequent steps in calcining the stone to produce lime."

Small-scale continuous flotation tests are described in which the influence of 1) pulp density and 2) feed rate on the rate of flotation are investigated. The results provide further evidence of first-order kinetics for flotation and indicate that tests at different feed rates provide a particularly simple method of determining rate constants. Flotation kinetics are discussed in general terms. Over a period of many years numerous research workers have studied the rate of recovery of valuable materials from flotation pulps with a view to deter-mining the mechanism of the froth flotation process. Froth flo ation is fundamentally a collision process involviug at some stage collision and then mutual attachment between air bubbles and mineral particles. It is possible to draw analogies therefore between the flotation process involving mainly macroscopic particles and the ordinary processes of chemical reaction kinetics involving collisions between atoms, molecules and ions. By adopting this analogy we may postulate a general equation representing the kinetics of the flotation process: -dC/dt =K.CC ,Aa (1) The rate constant, K, will be a complex function involving reagent concentrations, particle and bubble sizes, induction times and no doubt flotation cell design. However, these are factors which can be kept constant in any series of experiments, permitting investigation of the exponents a and c, which determine the order of the reaction occurring in flotation. The various research investigations carried out so far have all aimed at evaluating a and c and in the majority of cases only since the concentration of air has usually been kept constant in a series of tests, so that a relationship of the following type has been investigated: -dC/dt = K1 Cc (2) The techniques of both batch testing and continuous testing have been used to investigate this relationship. During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. The Michigan Dept. of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large-volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a rehtive aid in assessing rock strength is reported. These past several years have been a period of unprecendented construction and commercial expansion. Vast private manufacturing complexes and government road, power, and office projects are being built or are in planning stages. Nearly everywhere, municipalities are expanding outward and upward. Many towns are developing into cities and many cities are displaying new skylines, and the building boom shows little sign of slowing down.

"SUMMARY This report reviews the status of the packaged-for industry as of 1941. A field study was made of 35 representative plants to obtain technics and economic data on different types of processes used to make packaged fuel in the Central States. The report includes a classification of processes, photographs of typical operations, designs of different plants, an analysis of costs of manufacture, and a study of the physical and chemical properties of fuel cubes.It was observed that many of the smaller plants were having troubles in the manufacture of packaged fuel as the price of materials and costs of labor advanced toward the higher levels of 1942. In some instances, the total cost of manufacture was as high as $5.00 per ton, while in the better, medium-sized plants it was approximately $3.25 per ton. The direct manufacturing costs, excluding investment and depreciation, ranged from $3.17 to $2.37. These costs permit almost no profit at small plants when packaged fuel sells for the same price as competing lump coal under conditions existing in 1941-42.It was found that the predominant troubles in plants were due to inadequate drying and insufficient mixing of the starch binder. It was ob¬served that in the better plants, where proper mixing of binder was attained high-quality packages were made if 50 to 70 percent of the moisture was removed in the drying ovens. Experimental data obtained in the laboratory show the relationship between the temperature of dry air and the time required to remove different percentages of moisture in wrapped orunwrapped coal cubes.The average physical and chemical properties of fuel cubes made by five processes are listed, and tentative standards for minimum physical qualities and methods for measuring quantity are giver."

The Kalgoorlie Tailings Retreatment Project (or "Kaltails") involves the reclamation and retreatment of approximately 50 million tonnes of gold tailing situated on the Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Tailing is reclaimed and retreated at the rate of 42 million tonnes per annum. The project is a Joint Venture between Poseidon Limited and Gold Corporation, with Poseidon being the major participant (90%) and manager of the operation through its wholly owned subsidiary Kaltails Mining Services Pty Ltd. The marginal nature of the tailing retreatment project dictated that a detailed feasibility study be undertaken. Extensive sampling and metallurgical testing of the tailing permitted the development of an optimum economic processing route. A sensitivity analysis undertaken as part of the feasibility study indicated the project to be very sensitive to gold price and unit operating cost variations, and relatively insensitive to capital cost variations.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at W U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminars on New Technology for Longwall Ground Control. These seminars were conducted in Washington, PA, on April 12, 1994, and Denver, CO, on May 10, 1994. The papers herein describe several new, highly practical USBM technologies now available for ground control in longwall mines, including lie Coal Mice Roof Rating (CMRR), cable bolts, the MULSIM/NL model, and the Wood Crib Performance Model. Other significant topics addressed include longwall panel layout, coal pillar design, horizontal stress in longwall mines, roof support selection for gate entries, and ground control monitoring.

The mining industry to the lay mind is one which appears peculiarly dangerous, partly because the accidents which take place are usually of a very tragic nature, and partly because other, industries claim victims more from disease than fromviolence, and their fatal nature is not advertised to the same degree so that in spite of this idea of unusual risk, it is a fact that mining will compare favourably, as regards vital statistics, with nearly all other trades requiring special training.Neverthelessthere are a larger number offatal and serious accidents occurring year by year than one would like to see, and could the deaths which take place by accident be eliminated, it is safe to say that mining would become one of the most healthy of all species of skilled labour. If we examine the accidents appearing yearly in the reports of the Mining Departments of the various colonies, it will be at once admitted that many of them need riot, and in many cases ought not to, have occurred.It is, therefore, the object of tbis essay, to pass under review the ordinary precautions which should be adopted to minimise, as far as possible, the dangerous factors whereby fatalities are brought about.

To the industrial geologist, as wen as to the general or historic geologist, the possession of a reliable key to the true order or sequence of the stratigraphy or position of the various upper rocky envelopes of the earth's crust, is, equally, a desideratum of the utmost importance. Of similar value to the two groups of students is the possession of facts which throw light upon the relationships which subsist between the puccessive rock formation of different countries, especially between countries lying close to each other, or within the same great geographical division.But there is necessarily a fundamental distinction which marks the respective limits of the field of observations of the industrial geologist, and the purely historic interest of the general geologist. The former has a more definite though less extensive scope. The scope of the latter is wide and indeterminate. In short, the observations of the industrial geologist are, 'from a commercial or economic point of view, of a more practical character, and are, therefore, intentionally restricted to the study of all geological questions which throw light upon the rocks which yield products of economic value and only include the study of the character and history of other rocks, in so far, as they afford aid to the more perfect comprehension of the best manner in which materials of economic value are likely to be sought, and the best means whereby these products may be secured for the material advantage of the community. The motive of the general geologist-in most cases-is a love of the study of some particular branch or province of the geological field, and the fascination of opening a new volume in nature's library, and the hope of extending the realm of knowledge, however slight, are often sufficient, as a motive, to enlist the energy and life's devotion of the true brethren of the hammer, irrespective of considerations regarding the commercial utility of the pursuit.

The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, it will show what problems can arise when single estimated values are substituted for a distribution of values when evaluating an open pit mine project in the face of uncertainty. Secondly, it will show how the ability to deal with uncertainty and risk in mine project evaluation can have a significant impact on the ownersÆ and stakeholdersÆ investment decision-making. Here a new mine evaluation framework, the integrated valuation/ optimisation framework (named IVOF), is introduced as an alternative tool for mine project evaluation where uncertainty and risk are incorporated in the evaluation process.
