A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino mine. The efficiency with which the various samples could be ground was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from different locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale non-homogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully.

Research activities performed by Cleveland-Cliffs Research and Hibbing Taconite plant personnel during the last decade have resulted in the development of an improved autogenous mill grinding circuit. Minus one (1) inch autogenous mill trommel oversize material, con-sidered to be a critical size, is magnetically cobbed and then crushed to 100% minus 3/8" prior to reentry into the feed end of the mill. Autogenous mill capacity increases, up to 25%, have been measured in pilot plant tests using this approach and are also anticipated for the Hibbing Taconite concentrator which presently has reached a 15.5% improvement.

In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.

These technologies saved both capital and operating expenses associated with the installation and operation of multi-stage crushing and screening plants required for conventional rod mill – ball mill circuits. However, SAG and AG are inherently inefficient in terms of energy consumption, especially for very hard ores. In cases of hard ore, changing characteristics of rock fed to the mills causes wide fluctuations in mill capacity, which contributes to the inefficiency. Rising electric power costs make this the most expensive unit operation used in the extraction of valuable minerals from an ore. The objective of the concept discussed here is to reduce the energy consumption in AG grinding for hard ore and eliminate the use of large-diameter steel grinding balls that are required for SAG grinding"

In 1994, Gold Mines of Australia acquired the rights to the historic Mt. Lyell copper mine, and commenced a feasibility study into expanding production. The ore was shown in laboratory tests to be amenable to single-stage, fully autogenous grinding (FAG) of underground primary crushed ore, and this route offered the maximum cost savings. Flotation performance was expected to be enhanced. However, batch flotation tests done on pilot-scale autogenously ground ore showed an unexplainable recovery loss of between 1% and 3% Cu. A second pilot plant trial was set up, with the ground product feeding banks of continuous flotation cells. Single-stage FAG, FAG/pebble and FAG/ball circuits were tested. Results confirmed a loss of about 3% recovery with single-stage FAG milling. The FAG/ball circuit eliminated the loss. Analyses showed that autogenous milling probably produced more chalcopyrite/pyrite composites and that recovery of these composites was lower than with ball milling. In size fractions below about 53 microns, where chalcopyrite is well liberated, copper recovery was less affected by milling method and flotation selectivity. It was concluded that for the Mt. Lyell situation, a FAG/ball circuit was preferable to single-stage FAG.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. Substitution of coal and coke by renewable carbon (charcoal) is a low-risk and low-capital path to 50% or more reduction in net CO2 emissions by the steel industry. However, the high cost of charcoal and its low availability in most countries are barriers for the implementation of this approach. Development of an efficient wood carbonisation technology (slow pyrolysis) capable of producing large-volumes of charcoal from low-cost wood feed (e.g. wood wastes or forest residues) is an essential step towards the use of renewable carbon by the iron and steel industry. This paper provides a summary of the progress made over several years of R&D covering: (1) development and piloting of a new energy efficient slow pyrolysis process for production of charcoal from woody biomass at a competitive cost to the PCI coal, (2) techno-economic evaluation of the process. The main feature of the process is that the material undergoing pyrolysis is heated spontaneously without the supply of heat or air to the reactor. This makes it possible to carbonize large volumes of small-sized wood (e.g. wastes and residues) in a single reactor unit and capture high calorific value pyrolysis by-products

Automation technologies are increasingly envisaged to improve underground mining productivity. However, the technologies need to be used and adopted gradually in order to get the best benefits. This paper presents the technical and operational aspects of autoguided production vehicles at Brunswick Mine. During 2001 Noranda?s Brunswick Mine has successfully commissioned an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two orepasses. Operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. The data obtained up to now indicate that the system can operate reliably in mine production

The advantages of such a machine over a human being for testing of respiratory protective devices lie in its ability to quantify metabolic input, its repeatability, and the lack of a need to deal with the vagaries of human subjects. Breathing simulation has been widely achieved throughout the world but metabolic simulation has not. Approach Utilize the latest computer technology and place the complex portion of the system in software, leaving the mechanical portion as simple as possible. How It Works The concept for the automated breathing and metabolic simulator (ABMS) was developed through a research contract with the Pennsylvania State University. The ABMS utilizes a continuous removal/replacement concept to simulate metabolic functions, with breathing and metabolic functions being controlled by a computer. The mechanical portion of the machine is simple; the complexity of the system lies in its computer software which is not subject to maintenance problems.

It is necessary to assess the physical and functional conditions of highway bridges at regular intervals to ensure they still meet their service requirements. Currently, this condition assessment is mainly performed through visual inspection, which has been identified with several limitations (e.g. the timeconsuming assessment process and heavy reliance on inspectors? personal experience). In order to overcome these limitations and enhance the current inspection practice, this paper presents a novel method for automated bridge condition assessment using a hybrid sensing system. Under the method, existing conditions of bridge components are first captured with a stream of point clouds and color images. Then, the bridge components and the defects inflicted on the components are detected utilizing their visual patterns. The detection results are mapped to the point cloud. This way, the 3D information of the components and defects can be retrieved. The bridge condition assessment can be made effectively through the 3D visualization of this information before carrying out any on-site detailed evaluations.

The determination of shear strength parameters for the spoil material plays a crucial role in the assessment of a dump’s stability; nevertheless, their evaluation necessitates laborious laboratory experiments. In order to address this issue, Simmons and McManus (2004) formulated a framework that serves as a foundation for categorising spoils according to their distinctive shear strength parameters based on observable and tactile characteristics. This framework, previously identified as the ‘BHP Mitsubishi Alliance Coal (BMAC) Spoil Shear Strength Framework’, is now recognised as the ‘CoalSpoil’ framework. The spoil characterisation provided by the CoalSpoil framework offers benefits but is not without limitations. The examination of these attributes in the field is a time-consuming task that demands expertise. Subjectivity arises in the spoil characterisation when attributes straddle the line between two categories, such as delineating matrix-supported and framework-supported fabric structures. To enhance consistency in the spoil characterisation process, minimising human intervention is crucial to mitigate bias, classification errors, and safety risks. This study seeks to achieve this aim by introducing image-assisted and automated methods for spoil characterisation.

At ISCOR the quantitative determination of the structural properties of coke is done with a Leitz-TAS Image Analysis System. A reflected light microscopic image of a coke sample is converted into a binary image and stored in computer memory or on hard disc. By means of mathematical and stereological techniques the system can transform the images electronically. A lightpen can be used to determine the sequence of these operations. TASIC, which is based on BASIC language, is used as the program language on the computer. The majority of the programs are written by the user to ensure satisfactory results for specific studies. The computer controls the whole system, including the movement of the microscope stage, focusing, transformation and measurement of the image and data processing. The computer is also applied for establishing statistical correlations between the structural and other coke and coal parameters as well as for graphics and predictions of the coke structure. Factors affecting the structural properties of coke are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay's entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

"Sylvite's potash mine, which produces 8,000 tons of ore per day, probably ranks as one of the most highly mechanized and automated mining operations in the world. Employing, on a normal 10-hour production shift, one supervisor and a crew of seven operators, Sylvite is able to mine at an average rate in excess of 600 tons per hour. The ore is produced by two Marietta miners weighing 258 tons, the largest and heaviest pieces of equipment ever taken underground. The ore produced by these two Marietta miners is conveyed to the shaft area, cycled through a 15,000-ton storage system and hoisted to surface completely automatically. The operation of all equipment in the mine can be monitored and controlled from a central control panel located underground. Because Sylvite's mine is a new operation with equipment of a new design, the full potential of the operation has not yet been realized. The ultimate capability is clearly evident from the success Sylvite has had over the past year as the average mining capability has risen from 100 tons per hour to 600 tons per hour."

Sylvite of Canada, a division of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates a new 8500-tpd potash mine ten miles northeast of Rocanville, Sask. This mine, employing less than 60 men in its underground maintenance, engineering, and production operations probably ranks as one of the most highly mechanized and automated mining operations in the world. Access to the flat lying potash bed is through two 16-ft-diam concrete and steel lined shafts 3300 ft deep. The backbone of the operation is two 258-ton, 1500-hp continuous mining machines capable of mining in excess of 700 tph per machine while employing extensible conveyors for haulage. This production capability is complemented by a completely automated haulage, storage, and hoisting system. Of the other unique features of this operation, the principal ones are that the mine was designed and developed by the people that are currently operating it and from the time the shafts were commissioned, the mine was completely developed, equipped, and brought to full production in less than six months.

"In concentrating production energy-consuming power installations are wide used, the most powerful of them are the wet autogenous grinding mill operating in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The analysis of the current state of the automation of the grinding process shows that the reserves for maximizing productivity and minimizing electricity consumption have not yet been exhausted on the existing process equipment. Usage of the achievements of the modern management theory reveals an opportunity for further optimizing of the grinding process. The purpose of the research is to develop an automated control system of complex ""the mill-classifier"" to conduct the grinding process in the most operating efficiency, ensuring the maximization of productivity and minimization of specific electricity consumption. The main idea of this work is to study the specific features of the ore grinding process and creation on this basis of automated control system complex ""mill-classifier"" which allows to find and to maintain the optimal mode of grinding based on identification of the current object parameters, observance and regulating of the object state coordinates. Research methods. We used the methods of system analysis, mathematical statistics, modern automated control theory, theory of systems identification, optimal control, modelling of dynamic processes. Developed scientific provisions: - identification algorithm of the loading sub-system management object of complex ""mill - classifier"" allowing to obtain the unbiased estimators of its parameters according to the data of normal object exploitation; - observing device, which differs from the classic version of the observer Luenberger with possibility of estimating not only the state coordinates of the control object, but also the low-frequency perturbation component; - automated system stabilizing the active power of the grinding mode on the basis of a states controller with Luenberger observer; - structure of the software and hardware that implements the developed models, algorithms, methods of control, management and optimization in the framework of the automation of grinding."

Understanding energy performance of existing buildings is vital to increasing their efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumptions. This entails facility managers to systematically monitor building energy performance and reliably identify and analyze potential problems. Currently, infrared thermography is widely used as a primary diagnostic tool for the detection of building performance problems. Nonetheless, applications of thermal images for building inspection are mainly restricted to manual and labor-intensive identification and qualitative assessment of heating or cooling loss. Automated identification of potential problems and reliable cost analysis of the associated energy loss can help homeowners to minimize financial risk of retrofits and maximize energy savings. To that end, this paper presents a new automated method for calculating the cost of energy loss for building diagnostics. In the proposed method, first, using a hand-held thermal camera, the auditors collect digital and thermal imagery from the buildings under inspection. Then, using a recently proposed method for Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling, an actual 3D spatio-thermal model is generated and superimposed with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based expected energy performance model. The resulting EPAR model is placed into the method proposed in this paper for cost analysis of the energy loss. Through a new 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d tree structure and nearest neighborhood searching, performance deviations between these models are automatically calculated. Using a temperature threshold, the areas associated with potential performance problems are detected in the EPAR model and are visualized using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. Then, the actual R-values of the detected areas are measured at the level of 3D points. Based on the measured R-values and the estimated air change rate for the detected air leaks, (1) the heat loss or gain caused either by poor insulation or air infiltration/exfiltration and (2) the associated energy costs are automatically calculated. The proposed method is validated on several locations of existing residential buildings. The preliminary results show the potential of the proposed method for minimizing the inspection time as well as the risk associated with the cost analysis of retrofitting potential building performance problems.
