On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

Dense medium cyclones are the preferred means for cleaning 1/2 in. x 14Mesh to 28Mesh (12.7 mm x 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm) raw coal and are becoming a common choice for cleaning raw coal from a nominal top size of 2-1/2 in. to 3 in. (63.5 mm to 76.2mm) down to 14 Mesh to 28Mesh (1.0 mm to 0.6 mm). During the last ten years, dense medium cyclone circuitry design has undergone changes which have combined to improve process efficiency. This paper describes these improvements and compares present day design with the design used prior to the mid 1980's. Improvements in the following areas are described: Raw coal desliming, cyclone configuration, drain and rinse applications, dilute medium circuitry, and instrumentation and control.

Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

Since the 1960’s toroidal conductivity has been used to determine the Alumina to Caustic ratio of the digester discharge liquor stream. In recent years the application of ceramic materials have allowed the sensors to moved upstream to provide tighter control of the process. In the Bayer process, dissolving the aluminum contained in bauxite ore in caustic soda and converting it to aluminum oxide produces alumina. An important parameter of the process is measuring the alumina to caustic ratio in the digester discharge stream. The A/C ratio at a given caustic concentration is a measure of the degree of saturation of the alumina in the plant liquor. The aim in the process is to achieve a high A/C ratio. There is however a limit where precipitation will occur if the A/C ratio is too high. For many years conductivity has been used to determine the A/C ratio. Conductivity of discharge liquor is related to the caustic concentration. The change in the caustic concentration is in the same direction of the change of solubility of the alumina. Controlling the conductivity through adding additional bauxite ore and varying the dilution flow can increase plant yield.

On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

INTRODUCTION The method of heat removal during a casting process strongly influences the crystal morphology of the cast product and hence the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the solidified materials. In this paper, the Ohno Continuous Casting Process (OCC) is described in terms of the casting conditions and the type of structure observed in the cast product. Significant improvements are observed in workability, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of castings produced by the OCC method, Ohno (1988). Applications of this technique to low melting point nonferrous metals and alloys are discussed. The feasibility of the application of this technology to high melting point materials is outlined. THE OCC PROCESS The OCC process involves delivering liquid metal into a heated mold, the temperature of which is held just above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast. This is the key point which differentiates the OCC process from the conventional continuous casting method. A schematic illustration of the OCC process is shown in Figure 1. The Formation of a Single Crystal When the mold is heated above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast, nucleation on the mold surface is prevented and solidification takes place only at the mold exit. The heat is extracted through the product being cast by a cooling device located near the mold outlet. Crystals are formed only at the tip of the dummy bar at the start of casting, and as the dummy bar travels away with a progressively increasing speed from the mold, the position of the solid liquid interface will align with the mold exit, producing a unidirectionally

Mine ventilation, requires electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating. Typically, this accounts for approximately 40% of the overall underground energy consumption. This is considerable, and one of the major causes of this expense is that most mine ventilation systems are designed for the "worst-case-scenario" with respect to ventilation demand, which is commonly dictated by diesel equipment usage. Once designed, mines tend to operate their ventilation system at this peak level despite their exceeding day-to-day development and production needs due to lack of appropriate ventilation controls. In underground metal mines, TeleminingTM, which includes the tele-remote operation of mobile development and production equipment from surface, will change the mine design criteria including its support infrastructure such as the ventilation system. With the removal of machine operators to surface control rooms, conventional ventilation systems designed to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Depending on the ultimate need for ventilation, its cost in automated mines with tele-remote equipment operated from surface will be lower than the cost of ventilation in conventional mines. These cost savings, which could be significant, would not only come from the ability to reduce the amount of ventilation in the mine, but also through the capacity to automate its distribution. This paper provides an indication of the new airflow requirements in stopes and dead-end developments for the tele-remote and automated mining processes based on climatic modelling. Furthermore, this paper makes a cost benefit analysis by comparing the ventilation system operating cost of a conventional underground metal mine based on the mobile diesel powered equipment design criteria with the newly redesigned ventilation system operating cost of an automated mine based on the "heat management" design criteria.

U. S. Steel's Oak Grove Mine experienced several top hinge failures on their caving shields. It was determined that all the caving shields needed to be replaced with new caving shields before more thilures occurred. The cost and amount of time needed for several scenarios of caving shield change outs were compared. This paper discusses how Oak Grove Mine decided to and did change 126 caving shields in six specially designed jig stations underground during a longwall move using their own UMWA employees.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Proper analysis of washabiity data can lead to the development of a maximum yield coal preparation plant flow sheet. Simulations, as simple as spreadsheet mass and water balancing, are important in examining yield maximization and middlings liberation. Key to such attribute tracking flow sheet simulations is the distribution model, expressing the probability of a species reporting to the product stream. There are many such models in the literature. This paper examines a functional form that can represent or fit most of the proposed distribution functions.

Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President's 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. The recovery of copper from oxide ores containing from 2% to 4.1% acid-soluble copper from the Sarcheshmeh mine in Kerman province of Iran was investigated by agitation leaching in sulfuric acid media. Quartz, as a major constituent, and malachite, as the major copper mineral, were identified in the ore by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopic studies. A series of leaching experiments on the ore was performed over a concentration range of 10 to 20 g/L and temperatures from 15° to 50°C for a maximum of 3 hours. An initial high dissolution of copper was followed by a very slow reaction. By increasing acid concentration and temperature, the dissolution rate of copper was accelerated. However, by increasing acid concentration, the acid consumption of ores was also increased. Surface morphology of solid residues at various leaching times was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). All SEM micrographs of the partially reacted particles displayed a needle structure. The kinetic studies showed that the malachite dissolution rate could be modeled in two stages. About 85% of the malachite dissolution occurred in Stage 1, while the remaining 15% occurred in Stage 2. The data obtained for the leaching kinetics indicate that the dissolution for Stage 1 was a diffusion-controlled reaction with an activation energy of about 20.6 kJ/mole, and the dissolution for the Stag 2 was a chemical-controlled reaction with an activation energy of about 87.6 kJ/mole.

Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.

The mechanization of hard rock underground mines offers a large potential for reducing cost, improving efficiency, and increasing profitability. However, in spite of serious efforts by quite a number of equipment developers and mining company initiatives, the industry has achieved little real progress. The task is difficult and the blasting alternative to mechanical excavation is an effective and well-developed method, which continues to improve in spite of its inherent limitations. A large number of machines have been built and tried. Only a few developments have succeeded to make a major impact on underground hard rock mining. It is certain that hard rock mines would be laid out and designed quite differently if the mining engineers knew they had available continuous mechanical excavation machines. In the absence of the machines, mines will be designed for excavation by traditional methods. It is not easy to utilize mechanical excavation in a mine which is designed to operate with normal drill and blast excavation. This is certainly an impediment to machine development. But what if an ore body cannot be mined conventionally, simply because the mining company cannot get permits to satisfy the ever increasing strict EIS requirements of the general public and governmental agencies? This may provide the incentive necessary to develop the equipment that will be needed by a new mining method that will have almost no impact on the environment.

A mathematical model to represent the expansion and fragmentation of copper matte particles oxidized under flash converting conditions is presented. The model assumes that the particles are initially nonporous, have a constant mass prior to fragmentation and travel at a constant velocity throughout the reaction chamber. The model requires the specification of the following five parameters: the particle expansion rate, a fragmentation diameter factor, a fragmentation size distribution parameter and the fractions of the finest and the coarsest particles in the feed that undergo fragmentation. The model predictions show good agreement with the experimental data collected in a laboratory furnace over a wide range of experimental conditions. The evolution of the size distribution of the particles along the reactor length was computed, and the model parameters were correlated with the experimental operating variables. Model predictions indicate that particle residence time is an important factor in the generation of dust. The presence of two maxima in the particle density function may be attributed to turbulent conditions prevailing in the furnace, which cause particles to follow different trajectories within the furnace even if they are injected at the same location.

Lithium is a top-quality mineral in the energy market, with growing demand. It has many applications in medical, nuclear, and energy industries. The purpose of this article is to quantify and analyze the economic potential and projected global demand for lithium annually. It aims to determine Peru’s (specifically Puno) positioning in the global context in 2025 and 2030. The article also seeks to identify the main regulatory, environmental, and social challenges to sustainably exploit lithium in Peru. The study employs applied research (mixed approach), descriptive-correlational scope, and observational, crosssectional design. The methodology demonstrates the use of statistical techniques to model and make predictions about this energy-transition metal. Academic sources were reviewed to enable a comparative approach and projection into the future of lithium for development in the mining industry. In the last 10 years, lithium demand has grown, noting a 600% increase in the economy and projected annual growth of +26%. Exponential growth in resources is projected, where econometric, R-multivariable and R-linear models estimate that Peru could supply 1.5% in 2025 and 3% in 2030 of global lithium. Estimated growth of 5–15% in socio-environmental conflicts is projected with the start of lithium exploitation (Peru – Puno). The global potential of lithium demonstrates exponential growth. Lithium reserves in Puno - Peru would rank 13th between 2025 and 2030. It is necessary to establish a clear regulatory framework to avoid excessive increase in socio-environmental conflicts.
