As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

In the pelletizing plant of Hoogovens, Estel BV, a varying mixture of hematites and magnetites is used for the production of acid and (occasionally) fluxed pellets. Optimum results regarding productivity, quality and process control are obtained with mixtures containing 30-40 % magnetites. A decrease of the magnetite ratio or an increase of the basicity has a great influence on both productivity and heat and power consumption. Tests have been carried out to find the extent to which magnetite can be replaced by b.f. dust, mill-scale and coke breeze. Pilot plant tests show that about 80-100 % of the production loss due to a decrease in magnetite content or to the increase in basicity can be regained without damage to the quality by adding coke breeze. The amount of coke breeze should be limited tot 1,5 %; if this percen¬tage is chosen higher, the quality of the pellets deteriorates rapidly. The amount of coke breeze to be added should be about 30 % above the theoretical value, based on heat balance considerations. The results achieved by incorporating b.f. dust and mill-scale into the pelletmix were also encouraging, but as some types of mill-scale are very difficult to grind and the supply of b.f. dust is limited, the research has not been carried out extensively in this field. The pilot plant tests on replacement of magnetite by coke breeze have been followed by industrial tests, during which the breeze was added to the ore feed before the dry-grinding system.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

Long-Term Open Pit Scheduler or L-TOPS is a new software package for evaluating, planning, and design of open pit mines. L-TOPS transforms geological, economic, and technical information about a mineral deposit into a detailed mining schedule that maximizes economic efficiency without neglecting the practical requirements of mining operations. L-TOPS has been customized for integration with Placer Dome Inc.'s existing in-house resource/reserve optimization software to function as a primary tool for property acquisition studies and for the designing of mines for feasibility studies. This pa-per presents an overview of L-TOPS and reports on its application to Placer Pacific's (Placer Dome's Australian affiliate) Mt. Rawdon project.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and falls of ground, are some of the most significant challenges and hazards in underground mines. Our goal is to work toward mine-wide, digital, and real-time three-dimensional geotechnical situational awareness and predictive capabilities in complex underground mining operations. This will benefit operators, engineers, and management by enabling them to develop a more proactive approach to ground control. To this end, and inspired by research in the field of remote sensing and autonomous robotics, this paper assesses the potential of mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data acquisition for high-frequency, high-accuracy monitoring tasks in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) deprived underground mines. Limitations of current monitoring practices are reviewed. Relevant academic and commercial developments in the fields of indoor mobile mapping systems (MMSs) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), robust autonomous robotic platforms, and automated remote sensing data processing are highlighted, and their current shortfalls are evaluated. To conclude, the ramifications of this work for the development of future autonomous underground mine monitoring solutions are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The gold production is from the state-owned gold mines, the local gold mines and the by-product of metal mines. Since 1975, the small gold mines have developed in rapid strides. Currently, there are about 3000 small gold mines in China. Most of them are operated by the local, and the production is about 50% of China's gold output. In the small gold mines, the normalized mining equipments are employed at most of mines, but some mines still use such backward tunnelling and mining tools as pick, shovel and hand hammer etc.. The mining techniques have developed from the primitive to the advanced, especially the methods of open stope, shrinkage and filling have been widely used. Such new mining techniques as bolting, vibrating draw, non-electric ignition and diamond drilling etc. are also introduced in the wall gold mines. In recent years, the development of small gold mines is very fast under the guidance of new mining policy which is ' rapid and great development of large-sized mines, helping small mines to develop, and quick mining for the existing mines; and encouraging the collective and the individual to operate a mine.' GEOLOGICAL FEATURES The gold veins are dominant, which are divided into two types, ie. the mesothermal deposit with altered rock in a crushed zone and the hypothermal deposit with quartz veins. The orebody distribution is not centralized, and the size of deposit and single minable orebody is small respectively. Most of deposit dip at 30° to 50°, characterized by expansion and shrinkage, ramification and compound, thinning out and reappearance, separation and composite at the parallel veins etc.. The ore grade is variable, and the factor of grade change is above 100%. The waste zones with lean or submarginal ore usually exist in deposits. As for the gold deposits with altered rock, the ore boundary is indistinct. Most of gold deposits, particularly the gold deposits with altered rock, are intruded by the late structural rock, thus the faults and joints are developed, and the rock and ore are crushed, especially the host rock of roof wall is very crushed. It ie obvious that the conditions of both formation of deposit and mining are considerably complicated. HISTORY With a long mining history and rich experiences, the local gold sectors are small, but they play an important role in China's gold mining industry. Dated from Xia and Shang Dynasty, the gold goods was made. In the Tang Dynasty, the development of gold mining industry was very fast. A Chinese poem , written by Liu Yuxi -- one of famous poets in the Tang Dynasty, says: As sun is shining over Dengzhou land, The fog on river slowly goes away, The panning girls together meet at bay, The beauty's jewels and stamps of king are gold from river sand. This poem shows the local gold mining was flourishing at that time. In 1888, the local gold mining sectors were all the rage at the moment, and the annual output of gold was as high as 21.5 tons. Since the founding of New China, the development of local gold mining was subjected to several back- sets, but certain advances are made on the whole, especially since 1970. Round about 1970,the simple, backward and indigenous mining was dominant in the small gold mines; for instance, the hand-hammer drilling, the hand-operated winch hoisting and the hand haulage etc.were main methods of gold mining . Up until the late 1970s,great changes took place in stoping, haulage and so on. Currently, some advanced technology and large-sized equipments are adopted in the local gold mines. Generally, the local small gold mining sectors play an important role in development of China's gold mining industry, and are important and attractive sectors. PRESENT DEVELOPMENT

"Face ignitions in underground coal mines are a major risk for underground mining operations, as they can lead to methane or coal dust explosions. The 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch Mine resulted in 29 fatalities due to a methane and coal dust explosion initiated from a face ignition. Much research has been conducted to mitigate face ignition hazards, from water sprays to installing passive and active explosion barriers. Despite the increased use of water sprays in U.S. coal mines, there have been more than 50 documented face ignitions in the U.S. underground coal mines since 2010, indicating that this hazard still prevails. This paper will examine the statistics of face ignitions and gas explosion in U.S. coal mines based on MSHA data. It will study factors contributing to these face ignitions and outline best practices for their prevention based on experience and practices worldwide. INTRODUCTION Methane and coal dust explosions are one of the major causes of coal mine disasters in the U.S. and around the world. Such disasters have resulted in the large number of fatalities and loss of mine infrastructure. The recent explosion at the Soma coal mine in Turkey has caused the death of 301 miners (Mining Turkey, 2014). As documented by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015a), the U.S. coal mining industry has also experienced several catastrophic mine explosions with accidents at Upper Big Branch mine, Darby mine, Sago mine and Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine in the last decade, causing the deaths of almost 60 miners. Every explosion requires a source of ignition, the right amount of fuel and oxygen. In underground coal mines, methane acts as a fuel while ventilation air acts as a source of oxygen. The source of ignition may vary from spontaneous combustion, electrical equipment and switchgear, mechanical heat sources, face ignitions due to friction rock-on-rock or from cutter bits and lightning strikes. Under the right conditions, energy of less than 0.3 mJ is sufficient to ignite methane-air mixtures (James, 2007) that can result in a catastrophic explosion. Much research has been done to mitigate the methane explosion hazard by proper dilution, continuous monitoring of methane and elimination of ignition sources. Historical studies indicate that face ignitions are the major cause of explosion in underground coal mining operations worldwide (Belle, Carey, and Robertson, 2012). Statistics shows that most mine disasters were started from a small face ignition, which turned into a major explosion fueled by additional methane and coal dust (Belle et al., 2012). To investigate face ignition hazards, researchers must study potential ignition sources as well as potential explosive atmospheres near mechanical coal cutting operations. Statistical analysis of U.S. coal mine face ignitions reported by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015b) shows that several factors are responsible for face ignitions."

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values. The respect of EPB reference pressure during TBM advance and hyperbaric activities, the complete and effective filling of the annular gap between tunnel lining extrados and the excavation section and a well organized monitoring system, to control surface settlements and ground distortion, are items of utmost importance in EPB tunnelling process. The paper describes how these concepts have been applied while excavating in the difficult underground conditions found at Sao Paulo (Brazil) during the execution of the Sao Paulo Metro Line 4-Lot 1. In this project, the annular gap has been filled by two components type, cement grouting. The back feed of the extensive monitoring campaign carried out to check the surface settlements during the excavation and hyperbaric maintenance operations will also be described in the paper.

"PROJECT OVERVIEW Crossrail, Europe’s largest construction project, will increase London’s transportation capacity by 10% when it opens in 2018. The Crossrail scheme is a combination of surface and underground railway that stretches 118km east-west through central London from Reading, Berkshire and Heathrow airport in the west to Shenfield, Essex and Abbey Wood in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley in the east. Crossrail will serve 40 stations, ten of which are new, and bring 1.5 million people within 45 minutes commuting distance of London’s key central business districts. 21km of the Crossrail route comprises twin-tunnels beneath the heart of central London. It is the central section of the route, and the challenges that had to be overcome to construct its tunnels under the historic capital that forms the subject of this paper. The route of the Crossrail tunnels can be seen in Figure 1. These tunnels weave their way through the city’s underground landscape, linking eight new underground stations which connect to the existing London Underground network, providing interchanges with nine existing lines as well as the National Rail and Docklands Light Railway networks.Crossrail began construction of enabling works in May 2009 and launched the first of eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in May 2012. 42km of major tunneling work was completed in May 2015, and included 11km of sprayed concrete lined tunnels at the five mined stations (Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel) in addition to the bored tunnel sections. The remaining three sub-surface stations at Paddington, Canary Wharf and Woolwich were constructed as large open boxes prior to the TBMs passing through. Crossrail, Ltd. is a special purpose company formed by the project’s joint sponsors, Transport for London and the Department for Transport, to manage design, construction and commissioning of the project. In 2009, Crossrail engaged Bechtel Ltd. as its delivery partner and a joint venture, Transcend (comprised of CH2M, AECOM and the Nichols Group), as its programme partner. The project is being managed by an integrated programme management team which is staffed by Crossrail and its partners. The railway, when opened, will be operated by Rail for London. With tunneling completed in accordance with the project’s master control schedule, the new railway is scheduled to commence dynamic testing in late 2017, with a phased opening of the tunneled sections and stations through Central London in 2018."

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.

The aim of this joint work between the French Coal Board and the Paris School of Mines is to be able to practically model the behaviour of a transverse drum cutting rock with picks. First a theoretical approach leads to the concept of cutting curves, giving forces and torque against penetration per drum revolution. Then experimental evidence, from full scale and reduced scale testing, validated and confirmed the theoretical shape of the curves. Finally practical applications are given, to improve the design or use of a shearer (or continuous miner). A micro-computer program is being developed to predict the cutting performances of a machine in certain conditions.

In the past 15 years the enforced improvement of the public traffic systems caused a boom in urban tunnel construction. In 1961 the City of Paris started to build the Express-Metro. Of the 47 km long double-track line crossing the city center, nearly 45 km are in operation since 1971. Still missing is here only an about 2.6 km long connecting stretch, which is under construction now. From 1963 to 1969 the 21.8 km long Victoria Line was built in London as extension of the existing network,. A little later, in the years 1965 to 1973, the City of Hamburg supplemented its subway network by the construction of a 16.8 km long line between the Boroughs of Billstedt and Stellingen. Also in 1965 the City o Munich started to build a subway system of 54 km f length. Thereof a stretch of 16.2 km could be taken into operation in 1972 shortly before the Olympic Games. These are only some of the better known projectsas examples of the activities in European cities. In nearly all cities with more than about ½ million inhabitants subsurface traffic lines were begun or supplemented. Furthermore, numerous undercuts or other subsurface structures were built. The Ij Tunnel in Amsterdam and the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg may be mentioned, both structures finding international attention.

Our industry has developed to the skilled, experienced and productive industry that we now enjoy as a result of the visions of great engineers throughout history, but, in particular for their visions in the last 1 centuries. Unfortunately for our forefathers, the technology lagged so far behind that these exceptional visions could not be realized for decades, sometimes for a century. All that has changed in recent time and many bold and visionary projects can now be constructed and operated because of dramatic advances in technology. Before, say, 1950, tunnel technology developed very slowly. However, technology is now developing at such a fast rate that planners and decision makers are challenged to stay ahead. Moreover, new technology will develop during the lifetime of any project that can dramatically improve under-ground space projects. One of the best examples of this technological advancement is that of closed-face TBMs which now make tunneling feasible in previously impossible ground conditions. Since it usually takes a decade or more to plan, overcome environmental and political issues, construct, and put into service major projects, planners and designers are challenged by the changes in technology that occurs during the long time span of planning and construction. This is particularly true of large infrastructure projects such as transportation, water and wastewater systems and other major underground schemes. Also, since the serviceable life of many of these tunnels is often over one century, planners must consider not only lessons learned from the past but also what new concepts and innovations may develop over an extremely long time. These and other issues create a great challenge to planners and illustrate the great importance of careful but creative vision and flexibility during planning of long-term tunnel and underground space projects.

Progressive improvements in crusher design, screening efficiency, and operating experience along with the downsizing of many taconite operations has resulted in the abilitv of some crushing plants to produce a substantially finer product. This finer product opens the possibility of replacing the rods in the rod mill with balls as is the current practice at Sydvaranger, Norway. If this replacement could be accomplished substantial savings associated with metal wear and the elimination of rod charging may be realized. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a mill charged with rods with the performance of the same mill charged with balls at the pilot scale. The first objective was to establish whether we could achieve the same throughput rate at the same mesh-of-grind in a mill in which the rod media has been replaced by balls. The second point was to determine whether the ball media would create a significant tramp oversize problem.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

The Pinto Valley concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulfide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/molybdenum circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the molybdenum concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the molybdenum circuit were completed, the final molybdenum concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns were chosen. The column design and construction were done using in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing molybdenum concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high molybdenum tenors and low copper and iron content. The Pinto Valley operations, are comprised of the Pinto Valley concentrator, the Pinto Valley dump leaching and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. The concentrator operated from 1972 to 1998 when mining and milling operations were curtailed for economic reasons. The SX/EW plant continued operations for copper cathode production. After a cessation of mining operations of almost 10 years, Pinto Valley operations began a restart project in January 2007, to bring the mine and the concentrator back into production. Copper concentrate production started in October 2007 after refurbishing and upgrading the facilities with a new DCS system and filter plant. The daily targets of the concentrator were to treat 56.7 kt (62,500 st) of ore, produce 762 t (840 st) of copper concentrate containing 27.5 percent copper at recoveries of 86 percent and produce 2.2 t (2.5 st) of molybdenum concentrate containing more than 80 percent MoS2.

"Due to recent coal bursts in Australian coalmines, research of coal bursts has attracted intensive interest from mining researchers and engineers worldwide. Previous research has shown that the sudden drop of fractal dimension may be a precursor of catastrophic failure of rock. This paper examines the fractal characteristics of temporal-spatial distribution of acoustic emission signals released during the compression loading process of coal. This research suggests the possibility of coal burst forecasting based on acoustic emission data. The concept and calculation equation of fractal dimension is introduced in this paper. Additionally, uniaxial compression experiments of Australian coal samples are conducted, and the acoustic emission waveform and 3D location are recorded simultaneously by eight sensors Express-8 AE monitoring equipment in the loading process. The experimental results indicate that the continued slowdown of fractal dimension in time sequence can be used as a precursory signal of coal sample brittle failure. The fractal dimension of the spatial distribution of acoustic emission events decreases with the evolution of coal fracturing.INTRODUCTIONCoal bursts refer to the catastrophic failure of overstressed coal subject to the dynamic and static loads. In recent years, coal bursts have occurred in major coal mining countries and this phenomenon has attracted the research interests of international mining and geotechnical scholars. A total of five coal burst accidents happened in Australian coalmines since 2014. On October 20, 2018, a coal burst occurred at Longyun Coalmine in China’s Shandong province, which led to 21 fatalities. Unfortunately, even after decades of research, it seems neither more accurate forecasting methods nor comprehensive controlling measures put forward by researchers have solved the problems posed by coal bursts.As an instantons energy releasing process, coal bursts are always associated with energy dissipation in the forms of acoustic emission, micro seismicity, and electromagnetic radiation (Yamada, Masuda, and Mizutani, 1989). It is believed by many researchers that the frequency–magnitude relationship of micro seismicity induced by rock failure satisfies Gutenberg-Richer relationship as well (Feng et al., 2017). Hence, based on the principal and theory of earthquake source locating, micro-seismicity monitoring equipment has been adopted in many coalmines to locate seismic event origins associated with coal and rock failure in an attempt to better forecast coal and rock bursts. Although many parameters such as b value (parameter of Gutenberg and Richter’s law) (Lu et al., 2015) have been adopted as indicators of risk, the forecasting of coal bursts is still of low accuracy. The same is true with earthquake prediction, as it remains as a worldwide problem even after decades of research and practice. Acoustic emission (AE) methods are now widely adopted to detect rock failure processes under an applied stress for application predicting the abrupt failure of rock in the laboratory (Li et al., 2017). Previous studies have found that significant overlap exists between research regarding AE and micro seismicity with respect to generation process (both are concerned with the generation and propagation of elastic wave) and event origin location, as geophysical signals of both are same (Lockner, 1993). That is, the frequency–magnitude relationship and early-warning indicators found by AE research in the laboratory have a potential applicability to in-field micro seismic monitoring of coal bursts. Through experimental study, Feng and Seto found that the temporal distribution of acoustic emission counts of rock have distinct fractal structures during load-increase processes (Feng and Seto, 1999). INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.
