Mineworkers face a challenging and dynamic work environment every workday. To maintain a safe workplace, mineworkers must be able to recognize worksite hazards while they perform their jobs. Though hazard recognition is a critical skill, recent research from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that mineworkers fail to identify a significant number of hazards. To further the understanding of mineworkers’ hazard recognition ability and to begin to address hazard recognition performance, NIOSH researchers analyzed data collected during a laboratory research study to determine the effect of individual mineworker factors including risk attitude, work experience, and safety training on hazard recognition accuracy. The results of this study show that mineworker risk attitude and safety-specific work experience affect hazard recognition performance while hazard-specific safety training does not. These results suggest that some of these individual factors can be overcome through experience and training. Potential strategies that can be used to address these factors are also discussed.

The technical parametrization of reserves is a technique which has made an important contribution to the definition and the calculation of optimal mining projects. Its applications to a new open-pit optimization program have already been presented in various papers (François-Bongarçon and Maréchal (1976); François-Bongarçon and Guibal (1981)). The present paper gives a brief description of the general problem of parametrizing reserves before going into the details of the practical algorithms used in two typical cases, i.e. open-pit mining and mining between hanging wall and foot wall.

Vertical circular shafts have been proposed for multiple access to high level nuclear waste deep geologic repositories. Shaft construction is a critical path item in the commissioning of a repository. Other constraints on the shaft design and construction criteria include the lack of design precedence for long term performance and the importance of minimizing rock and groundwater disturbance. A comparative evaluation of conventional and mechanized shaft sinking techniques is presented in the context of the particular geologic and design constraints. Technical and non-technical factors for blind drilling, blind boring, raise-reaming, drill-and-blast and ream-and slash methods are reviewed for typically "hard rock" and "salt" type repository sites. Appropriate shaft designs are developed, the suitability of each method to the particular requirements evaluated and construction costs and schedules determined. The explicit appraisal of the significant design factors for each method serves as a rational basis for the preliminary selection of the most suitable sinking technique for a particular set of site/design conditions.

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

From 1993 through 1999 Cyprus Amax Minerals Company successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized, and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents, from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from 16,000feet to sea level, from city suburbs to remote wilderness, from a low of $130 million to over $1 billion. Open pit and underground; mill and leach; gold, copper, molybdenum, and coal were all encompassed. The breadth of diversity experience from these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a “best practices” project management protocol, to steer corporate expansion into the next millenium. This paper summarizes those best practices, while high-lighting project management pitfalls to avoid.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is difficult to treat due to its physicochemical characteristics, such as high pH and high heavy metal concentrations, so it causes great harm to the environment and human health. If acid mine drainage is discharged arbitrarily without treatment, it will lead to a series of environmental problems and cause long-term environmental pollution. In this paper, the source and hazards of acid mine drainage are introduced in detail. And the principle, the mechanism, the application, and basic information of the current primary technology of the treatment for acid mine drainage are comprehensively introduced and summarized. The summarized treatment technologies for acid mine drainage mainly include neutralization, sulfidization, constructed wetland method, adsorption method, microbiological method, ion exchange method, membrane technology, and microbial fuel cell technology. Also, the primary technology of treatment for acid mine drainage is systematically compared and evaluated. Moreover, some suggestions on the development direction of water treatment technology in the future are put forward. This paper provides a scientific reference for scientific and technical works to treat acid mine drainage.

A major spontaneous combustion incident occurred in the sealed goaf of the SL3 Panel; Southland Colliery in 2003 resulting in the loss of a longwall and sealing of the mine. The most important issue for the new owners, Yancoal Australia Pty. Ltd, was to effectively manage the atmosphere in the fire affected sealed area. This atmosphere comprised of flammable gases, the products of combustion and excessive levels of oxygen due to pressure differentials across the panel isolation seals with a potential ignition source associated with the residual spontaneous combustion event. The challenges were met in the first instance by the erection of pressure balance chambers with limited success. The problem was not solved until the pressure chambers were pressurized using a Floxal Nitrogen Plant supplied by Air Liquide Australia. Given the success of this approach on a small scale, a higher capacity Air Liquide Floxal Unit was acquired to manage spontaneous combustion at the recommencement of longwall mining operations. This provided the ability to pressurize pressure chambers that were installed in the Maingate Seals behind the face of the adjacent Longwall Block effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and permitting the goaf to self inert in a reasonable time period. This paper summarizes a new proactive method of mitigating the risks associated with active and sealed goaves. Proactive management of these areas using low flow nitrogen into pressure chambers to maintain a positive pressure has eliminated typical reliance in explosion proof or explosion resistance seals as the primary control.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

Unlike in coal mines where caving methods are used, the subsidence over potash mines in Saskatchewan, Canada, is a function of gradual mining convergence. Because of the presence of high pressure water aquifers over the evaporite salt formations, the mines have to be designed as regionally stable and no caving is allowed. The extracted area converges gradually and the convergence is mainly a function of the extraction and the mining method employed. Consequently, the subsidence rate is very slow and the bridging of the over-lying strata is a considerably more important phenomenon than elsewhere. The paper evaluates a case history of convergence and subsidence in a deep potash mine in Saskatchewan.

Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

Yucca Mountain Overview The U.S. Department of Energy?s Yucca Mountain Project is a geologic repository project designed to receive, handle, package, transport, and emplace spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. The planned repository would be located in Yucca Mountain on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and would include both surface and subsurface areas. Yucca Mountain rock formations consist of successive layers of volcanic rocks (called tuffs) approximately 14 to 11.5 million years old, formed by eruptions of volcanic calderas to the north. With the volcanic rock the potential for methane emission is not an issue and the subsurface repository is a non-gassy (methane) classification. This paper will provide a summary of the development ventilation system design that provides fresh air for subsurface construction activities, and the emplacement ventilation system design that removes heat generated by the waste packages. The subsurface layout, illustrated in Figure 1, contains 108 emplacement drifts, one Performance Confirmation(PC) observation drift, nine intake/exhaust shafts, and three access ramps. The existing Yucca Mountain facilities, shown in bold lines in Figure 1, include a 7.8 km long, 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter U shaped tunnel that is formed by the North and South Ramps at both ends of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) drift and a 1.5 km long, 5.0 m (16.4 ft) diameter Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block drift (ECRB) that were constructed from 1994 through 1998. These drifts were used for site characterization activities and have been incorporated into the subsurface repository configuration. The unexcavated perimeter access main and exhaust main drifts are typically 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter TBM excavations and the emplacement drifts are 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM excavations. The turnouts leading into the emplacement drifts are to be excavated by either mechanical, or drill and blast methods and serve as the launch chambers for the emplacement drift TBM excavations.

Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Costs of complex/underground projects have been consistently underestimated and delivery on time and on budget has been problematic. This has been attributed, to inadequate cost estimates and unidentified and/or insufficiently managed risk. Use of probabilistic cost estimates like the Washington State Department of Transportation?s CEVP® process (developed by the author and others) has produced more realistic cost estimates, explicitly identified and quantified risk (as input to risk management plans) and early awareness of key project issues. This paper updates previous work (NAT 2004), adds implementation detail for probalistic cost estimating as used by WSDOT, FHWA and other agencies and will address key issues in risk management, as related to probalistic cost estimates.

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

In Japanese tunneling history, it has commonly been accepted that the long-round driving is difficult due to the complicated geological condition. Therefore, the maximum past record has been less than 3 m per round. A new record of advance was established in the 99 m2 headrace tunnel of Imaichi Water Power Station Project with an advance of 239.5 m in a month by drilling 3.9 m deep blast holes. The geology of the headrace tunnel composed of pyroxine andesite (ie. 960-1770 kg/cm2, VP3.1-4.3 km/s) which had several clay seams and open cracks and was moderately weathered. Automatic shotcrete machine was used for shotcreting. Rock support was specified according to the N.A.T.M. with each different rock type. The contractor achieved a remarkable tunneling advance not earlier experienced in Japan.

To investigate the differences in the radial drag pick cutting performance in dry and saturated sandstone, a suite of linear rock cutting test was performed using linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). Experimental results of 50 data passes, incorporating 350 data cuts were used to compute cutting, normal and side forces required for determination of other performance related parameters. Although the forces required to cut the dry and saturated rock were in congruence for most of the spacing and depths of cut combinations; but the overall averaged cutting and normal forces for saturated rock cutting were found to be 9.9% and 9.4% respectively higher than the dry rock cutting. The increase in the overall averaged forces was attributed to strength variability of one of the saturated block affecting the overall forces. The side forces experienced a negligible drop in saturated rock cutting. An increase of 28% and 9% in the actual and nominal specific energy values respectively was also recorded when cutting saturated rock as compared to the dry rock cutting. The increase in saturated rock specific energy is attributed to production of large amount of fines and few large sized chips directly contributing towards increase in specific energy. The optimum s/d ratio for dry rock tests was found to lie between 6 and 8 whereas for saturated rock cuts this value lied between 5 and 9.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.
