Initial investment for mechanical boring of tunnels is found to be high in most cases. Conventional drilling and blasting is not the possible especially in urban area. In these conditions impact hammer offers many advantages over conventional drill and blast techniques and boring tunnels. These include improved safety, minimal ground disturbances, elimination of blast vibration, reduced ventilation requirements, reduced cost etc. Therefore, hydraulic impact hammers have been used widely in metro tunnelling projects in Istanbul since 1992. Accumulated and published data from various tunnelling projects serve to improve predicting the machine performance and scheduling of job duration. This paper is prepared under this objective. Machine utilization time of impact hammer was evaluated in this study. The main rock formation named Kartal formation arepaleozoic aged sedimentary rocks, shale, sandstone, siltstone, andesite dykes and sediment fillings. The first stage of the project is commissioned to Yapi Merkezi- Yuksel- Dogus- Yenigun- Belen consortium.

Representative samples are required from process streams in order to accurately measure chemical and physical characteristics. This information can then be used by process operators and metallurgists to evaluate the process and effect control actions for the operation. The capture and presentation of representative samples can be critical to measuring values, such as elemental analysis and particle size, with on-line or near-stream analyzers. A comprehensive multi-physics model has been developed and used to better understand the effects of slurry flow and particle segregation under certain operating parameters. An algebraic slip model coupled with a free surface algorithm is used to track motion and position of particles and phases within a specified geometry.

Public-private partnership efforts are working to create green landscapes from abandoned industrial sites. Fabricated soils, potentially an essential element of such landscapes, are designed to substitute for topsoil on the areas free from ground cover and plant community. The aluminosilicate matrix and humus form the soil micelle - the primary unit of any soil complex. Humus formation is a process based on carbon-nitrogen interaction. Sources of carbon can be materials rich in easily composted products like cellulose and polyphenols (plant leaves) or aged lignin polymers (saw dust from different woody plants). The pathways of carbon-nitrogen complexes are discussed. Properties of the fabricated soil components were examined by bio-tests and plant models.

Estimation of the cutter life and cost is a part of evaluating performance for a hard rock TBM in any project. Various approaches has been proposed for calculation of disc cutter life in various rock types based on machine specifications and rock strength and abrasivity. Cutter change time is a parameter that is used in some of the estimates and is defined as the average time required for changing a cutter on the cutter head and cutter life is the number of cubic meters of excavated rock per each disc cutter. Analysis of cutter life information of several tunnel projects from around the world has revealed that the published models for estimation of cutter consumption require some revisions to offer a more accurate prediction. The preliminary analysis of data shows that the average cutter change time is approximately 66 minutes for different cutter sizes and there is a minimal difference between corresponding cutter change times of the large (e.g. 19 or 20 in) versus smaller cutters (e.g. 15.5 to 17 in). This paper reviews the available and published cutter life data from various projects. It also introduces new models for estimation of cutter life and cutter change time as part of TBM down time and utilization analysis.

Since 1985, the Sunshine Mining Company has used a patented nitric-sulfuric acid pressure leaching system for production of silver and copper from a refractory sulfide ore body. To better understand this novel process, a program of lab scale testing was undertaken to quantify the effect of system variables on silver recovery. Some of the factors studied include temperature, agitation, acidity, vessel pressure, particle size, percent solids and oxidizer amount. In turn, this knowledge will be applied in actual plant practice to upgrade reaction time, increase concentrate throughput, raise silver recovery and lower reagent costs. A discussion of plant process changes resulting from lab scale testing is included.

Underground mining accidents in the USA in recent times have prompted the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to review emergency and tracking systems for underground mines. Several communication and tracking systems are available on the market and various systems have been installed in mines around the world. In addition, MSHA?s standard on Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) requires mines to comply with the final PEL of 160µg/m3 by May 20, 2008. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., Underground Division, has been in operation since 1995 and an extensive control and monitoring network, and a leaky feeder voice network is in place. Enhancements to the communication and control system are currently being implemented to include a PED emergency notification system, wireless LAN with tracking of personnel and equipment in the mine, and a ventilation control system that will use the tracking information and ventilation data to automate much of the mine ventilation system. Expected benefits from such a system would be enhanced communication with miners, emergency notification, location of miners and equipment, energy savings, improved ventilation control, and improved atmospheric conditions in the mine including reduction of diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Limestone-based technology for arsenic removal from water is an innovative and promising method. The technology offers the potential for low-cost disposal of a stable waste product after arsenic removal, either in an ordinary landfill or by encapsulation in concrete. Leaching research described in this paper shows that the limestone waste, after encapsulation in concrete, passes the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Leaching was less than 0.05 mg/L, which is 1/100 of the U.S. EPA?s standard for disposal of arsenic in a landfill. Disposal of arsenic-enriched waste is critical for commercial viability of arsenic-removal technologies. Low-cost disposal gives the limestone-based method an advantage that could help communities meet the new maximum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion for arsenic in drinking water. The ability to recycle the waste material in concrete could add a significant economic benefit, further reducing overall costs.

Several startup or longtime underground stone mines have experienced unanticipated roof control difficulties due to the variable geologic character of the roof strata. Careful mapping of roof conditions, and identification of controlling geologic and mine geometric factors, lead to an understanding of the mechanisms causing roof problems. Factors such as unexpected rolls of the roof strata resulting in a gradual change from strong to weak roof; encountering open water-filled master joints; roof strata delamination due to internal water pressures; local karst features with mud, sand, and water hazards; and sudden loss of limestone roof due to paleo-channel erosion are some recent problems described. Strategies for overcoming these problems are discussed and detailed.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

During 1975, the Reclasource Corporation constructed and commissioned a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust, blast furnace sludge and basic oxygen furnace dust at the site of Crucible Alloy Division, Midland, Pennsylvania. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This Process takes the solid in-plant fines as listed above, commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes and forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system and cures the binder through a final heat-treating step. 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets have been tested in the Crucible blast furnace in several campaigns structured to assess material handling properties, burden feasibility and finally culminating in an iron and carbon assessment campaign. Data are presented from the records of the blast furnace operation and conclusions are drawn that both iron and carbon utilization have been demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. Production will peak at 190,000 tonnes of copper metal and 710,000 troy ounces of gold per year, one of the top 10 copper and top 15 gold producers in the world. * Throughout this paper, the word tonne and abbreviation refer to the metric ton of 1000 kg.

Montana sapphires were first discovered in alluvial deposits in the Helena area in 1865 and subsequently were discovered in other alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana and also in a lamprophyre dike at Yogo in central Montana. From about 1900 until the late 1930?s, when synthetic sapphire began to come into widespread industrial use, Montana sapphire mines produced large quantities mainly for watch bearings with lesser production for the gemstone market. The Yogo deposit is now mined for the gemstone market and two of the alluvial deposits are mined to produce sapphires for the fee-sieving of sapphire-bearing gravel and for the direct sale of gemstones. The generally pale-colored sapphires from the alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana are heated to enhance their colors whereas the generally blue sapphires from the Yogo deposit require no treatment. Markets for sapphires from both the alluvial deposits and the Yogo deposit are strong. In spite of reported historic production in excess of 70 tonnes, mineable resources appear to remain at most major deposits. Also abundant untested lamprophyre dikes in central Montana may host sapphires similar to those at the Yogo deposit.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

The Brightwater regional wastewater treatment facility, under construction in King County, WA, includes an extensive conveyance system that will feature deep, soft-ground tunnels and shafts. Excavation of the Ballinger Way Receiving Portal to 65.8 m (216 ft) below grade through challenging geology was accomplished by means of artificial ground freezing. This paper discusses freeze design development, system installation and monitoring, and the contractual and construction challenges that were overcome, including work sequencing and excavation means and methods, together with lessons learned.

In processing coal, the low concentrate value requires high capacity production and sharp classification/separation techniques to reduce specific production costs. The allflux separator meets these criteria with a unique two-stage design. Through a combination of rising current and fluidized bed technologies, the allflux has extended the state of the art by expanding the particle size range that can be efficiently processed. Using concepts that have proven successful in processing concrete sands, small-scale industrial testing with coal feed stocks looks very promising. Attractive applications for the allflux are projected in fine coal recovery from old settling ponds or as a retrofit in existing fines circuits.

Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people's money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. This paper is concerned with subsidence prediction methods and in particular with two techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. In more detail, the hyperbolic tangent profile function, as developed by VPI&SU from field data pertaining to the eastern U.S. coalfields, and an influence function method currently being adapted for the same region, are presented and discussed. The applicability, advantages and limitations of these techniques are examined and comparisons are presented with field measurements. Computer software developed for the application of these prediction methods, for two widely used personal computer systems, are also discussed and a number of examples are presented demonstrating the potential of such programs.

Passive-treatment systems that mitigate acid-rock drainage (ARD) from coal mines have operating since the mid-1980s. Large systems at metal mines are being contemplated. A 95L/sec (1500-gpm) capacity system is planned this year at an underground lead mine in Missouri. Mine, process and environmental managers need to understand how and why passive-treatment systems work. They must understand what operational limitations to expect, as well as the economics of construction and operation compared to the alternatives, like lime precipitation. Wetlands have been recognized as nature's method of improving water quality. Contaminant reductions can occur through the precipitation of metal hydroxides, sulfides and carbonates and pH adjustments. Local conditions, oxidation state and water and soil chemistries dictate whether these natural reactions will occur under oxidizing (aerobic) or reducing (anaerobic) conditions.

An accurate estimation of mining block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. Two of the factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates are the estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit. The objectives of the study are twofold: Firstly, to see how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit. Secondly, to determine the impact of particular nature of the mineralization on the results. The comparison of several estimation methods for the prediction accuracy is performed using the conditional simulation results as the basis.
