Geotechnical models developed during the planning stages of open pit mines are three-dimensional so as to capture the spatial variation in lithological, structural, hydrogeological, and geomechanical conditions. Geological models that describe the lithological and structural (faulting and folding) characteristics of a deposit are always 3D. Likewise, boreholes and piezometers used to develop geomechanical properties and groundwater models are drilled at spatial offsets across the deposit to understand the lateral and vertical characteristics. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the three-dimensional geological, hydrogeological, and structural models as well as geometrically complex 3D mine designs for optimizing economic mineral recovery and overburden removal are simplified to two-dimensional sections. In this paper we demonstrate that this simplification can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being identified, analysed, and/or a conservative factor of safety being calculated and hence an over-estimation of slope stability. Through case studies we show how three-dimensional analysis methods are more suited to rock slopes, particularly those with anisotropic material strength, when singularities such as geological faults are present, and nonlinear slope geometry. When the same slopes are analysed in two dimensions, the failure mechanism calculated is often fundamentally incorrect. The case studies further reveal that the factor of safety calculated in three dimensions is not always higher than the two-dimensional factor of safety.

The transport of large boulders in a furrow from a mining area to a nearby pond was considered. The furrow is filled with a mixture of water and soil particles flowing down to the pond at high velocity. Due to operating constraints, the slope of the furrow is reduced progressively. A relationship is derived, relating the slope of the furrow and the composition of the fluid to the maximum size and shape of the transported boulders. The characteristics of the boulders carried all the way down to the pond may then be determined.

This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. This paper introduces the multi fractal interpolation method (MIM)developed for handling singularities in data analysis and for data interpolation. The MIM is a new moving average model for spatial mapping and interpolation. The model decomposes the raw data into two components: singular and nonsingular components. The former can be characterized by a localized singularity index that quantifies the scaling invariance property of measures from a multifractal point of view. The latter is a smooth component that can be estimated using ordinary kriging or other moving average models. The local singularity index characterizes the concave/convex properties of the neighbourhood values. The paper utilizes a binomial multiplicative cascade model todemonstrate the generation of one- and two-dimensional data with multi-scale singularities which can be modelled by asymmetrical multifractal distribution. It then introduces a generalized moving average mathematical model for analysing and interpolating data with singularities. Finally, it is demonstrated by a one-dimensional case study of de Wijs’ data from a profile in a zinc mine, that incorporation of spatial association and singularity can improve the interpolation result, especially for observed values with significant singularities.

The use of a time series variogram as an aid in controlling the quality of a product was pioneered by Pierre M. Gy and is described. The ability to analyse and interpret covariance relationships time series data is possible using the variogram. The concept of stream heterogeneity allows sources of variability in process streams to be identified and isolated. Principally this is distributional heterogeneity that is due to a short range effect of segregation in the process stream related to size or composition distribution of the material on a local scale and due to a long-range change in the size and grade of the material stream. The variogram is simply a tool for representing these sources of variability in a way that is explicit, allowing identification of the source and providing important insights to temporal continuity between samples. This paper describes the chronologically related large-scale variability in an iron ore process stream (%Fe), and illustrates the control and mitigation of variability at various stages within the process using a variogram. Three main sources of variability are identified including the random variability V[0], the process variability V[1], and the variability due to cyclical phenomena V[cyclic], arising from human routine or mechanical defects. These sources of variability can be represented on the control chart that provides the plant superintendent with insights as to the sampling capability of the systems in place. Maintaining levels of variability within customer specification limits requires that production systems be controlled without overcorrecting for the trends in changing quality. This can be done only by representing the limits of control relative to the limits of specification on a control chart. Where the specification limits encroach on the control limits, one or the other, or both, may need to be changed; specification limits that constrain the control limits lead to reactive decision making that is expensive and stressful for plant operators.

In most cases, slope movement monitoring data are collected on a temporal basis and displacement or velocity is plotted against time in order to assist the engineer to make judgements about slope behaviour. Once an unusual behaviour pattern has been established, the data are then analysed to estimate when the key inflection points occur in the data, when the slope movements start to accelerate and, ultimately, when the slope is expected to collapse. The identification of these inflection points is sometimes difficult to achieve with the naked eye. This paper presents the application of a trend analysis technique, known as cusums, to assist in this process. The authors have presented a range of data from various real life examples which highlight the effectiveness of the cusums technique. A key aspect of the cusums technique is the use of a constant (K) against which data trends are assessed. This constant is best derived from slope performance data at each site, as each rock mass will behave in its own unique way. The authors have experienced slopes that have had threshold values ranging from 0.1mm/day through to 10mm/day, and therefore a conservative approach should be adopted when assessing the performance of slopes.

With the passing of Dr William Bleloch on 20th June 1991, we lost not only a colleague and a good friend but a man who made a very significant contribution to the industrial development of South Africa. He can rightly be called the father of the ekctrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries in this country, since his ideas and dedicated work were directly responsible for the development of these large industries as we know them today.

"A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. A typical three-phase submerged-arc furnace for production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon has arc currents ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 - 60 MW. The arcs burn in gas filled cavities or "craters", where the main atomic components of the plasma mixture are silicon, oxygen and carbon. Two quite different simulation models for high-current AC arcs have been developed: the simple Channel Arc Model (CAM), and the more sophisticated Magneto-Fluid-Dynamic Model (MFD). These models have been described extensively and results reported at INFACON-8 and INFACON-9, respectively. The coupling between the arcs and the AC power source is described by a complete three-phase Electric Circuit Model. Recent numerical modelling studies of industrial AC arcs show that the boundary conditions at the cathode and anode are critical for the simulation results. A novel Cathode/Anode Sub-Model for high-current AC arcs that treats both cathode and anode indicates a completely different cathode behaviour than previously assumed. A cathode spot which serves a high-current electric arc is shown to be dominated by the energy impact from the arc. This leads to lower cathode fall voltage than obtained from previously developed models. The anode fall voltage is negative, as the main function of the potential barrier is to repel plasma electrons. The cathode spot is diffuse in the sense that the arc in fact contracts away from the cathode. Simulation results are compared to measurements on both industrial furnaces and smaller scale pilot furnaces. An important conclusion, supported by our arc studies, is that the arc length in silicon metal and ferrosilicon furnaces does not exceed 15 cm and the arc may burn anywhere on the electrode, not necessarily beneath the electrode tip.

In the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) small and medium sized companies are beginning to extract the related gas via old shafts or boreholes and to use it as a source for the production of electricity and heat. More than 100 applications for the separate mining right on mine gas had already been filed by beginning of 2002, since mine gas is treated as a mineral resource under the Federal Mining Law. Meanwhile more than 40 mine gas concessions have been granted and first projects are being developed with encouraging results so far. To enhance the applied techniques and their efficiency Aachen University has formed a research team in this discipline. Scope and goals of this research activities are being presented in this paper. Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng.) Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Small and large welded aluminium specimens were tested in fatigue and the results compared with design curves for aluminium in specification BS8118. Metallurgical tests were also performed on the specimens in order to correlate microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The small-scale fatigue test results were in reasonable agreement with results in BS8118, whereas the large-scale fatigue tests showed that BS8118 is conservative.

Mineral royalties are one of the oldest forms of mining taxation, and were initially introduced to extract economic rents from mining. Over time, the royalty regime has become more complex as it was identified as an important policy instrument that can achieve more multi-faceted outcomes. Such a multi-tiered approach in the use of the royalty instrument is also the case with South Africa. With South Africa’s new mineral royalty regime now in place for ten years, it is perhaps time to assess its impact and effectiveness. To carry out this assessment, an econometric evaluative study was undertaken using four major commodities in South Africa, namely gold, platinum, iron ore, and coal. The study explored five different policy options for government to consider and tested them to determine the most favourable one that will realize the regime’s policy objectives. After the assessment, two major options stood out. Hence, this paper seeks to highlight which of the two options is the most favourable for consideration by policymakers. Based on that study, we find that the current structure is effective, but also recommend that the factors in the formula for refined minerals be ‘modified’ to reduce the capped profitability ratio from the current 60% to 30% and the maximum royalty rate for refined minerals from 5% to 3%. The minimum rate of 0.5% during times of depressed mineral prices and no or low profitability will not be affected.

This paper investigates the role of vertical integration between chrome ore mines and ferrochromium smelters in the location of ferrochromium production capacity in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Vertical integration is important in understanding the increasing competitive position of these two countries as observations show that an increasingly larger share of the global market has been coming from integrated producers. The paper argues that the increased vertical integration between mines and smelters in South Africa and Zimbabwe has led to a lower cost of chrome ore as an input compared with other producers. Underlying this hypothesis is the basic tenet that, more likely than not, production will take place where the costs are lowest. The paper concentrates on high carbon ferrochromium (HCFC) production in market economy countries (MEC). Using an ordinary least squares model, the study tests the relationship between low chrome ore costs and vertical integration shows a statistically significant relationship. These findings partially support the view that the control of sources of chrome ore is a major source of competitiveness. The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, while in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600 - 1000° C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed . For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidised bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidised bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

The distinction between real estate ownership and that of interests in the property is fundamental to the appraisal of mineral properties. This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

The computer assisted generation of geological models to represent the geometry of, and grade distribution within, orebodies is a rapidly growing area of the geological profession. Such models are increasingly used as a necessary starting point in determining the mineability of mineral deposits in terms of practical mine design and economic considerations. The transition from traditional techniques such as field or underground mapping and the manual calculation of grade and tonnage estimates, as well as related activities such as the interpolation of cross-sections, the use of stereographic projections, core logging and hand contouring, to computerized applications, is by no means complete. In fact, many geological professionals deliberately avoid the use of computer simulations based on the perception that the resulting models are simplistic and that their construction is not founded on sound geological principles. The purpose of this paper is to assess current thinking on this topic by considering; (a) an overview of advances in the drafting of geological maps, (b) the theoretical basis for multi-dimensional geological modelling, (c) the case for combining traditional and modern techniques, and (d) the benefits to the mining value chain.

The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.
