The conversion of carbon-containing feedstock into liquid fuels can proceed via the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which is catalysed using supported cobalt catalysts. These catalysts contain noble metals to facilitate the reduction of oxidic cobalt species in the catalyst precursor to metallic cobalt, which is the catalytically active species for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. This is thought to occur via hydrogen spillover, i.e. the diffusion of atomic hydrogen over the support from the noble metal to the oxidic cobalt moieties. Noble metals may also affectthe dispersion of cobalt in the active Fischer-Tropsch catalyst. The economic aspect of the addition of noble metals to the Fischer-Tropsch catalyst is discussed.

Altering the microstructure in order to improve the tensile properties of bow shackles resulted in inconsistency in the fatigue performance. This raises the question whether the inconsistency in fatigue life can be attributed to microstructural changes along the profile of the shackle or to decarburization at the surface. Bow shackles forged from 080M40 (EN8) material were subjected to different heat treatments in order to alter the microstructure. The shackles were subjected to five different fatigue load cases, which represented typical loads experienced at termination points for an overhead power line with a span length of 400 m, with changes in conductor type, configuration, wind, and ice loading. Although the change in microstructure does improve both the tensile and fatigue performance, we found that the depth of the decarburization layer has a greater effect on the high cycle fatigue life of bow shackles than the non-homogeneous microstructure.

A sampling campaign carried out on the lead flotation circuit at Lakan lead-zinc processing plant demonstrated that the Pb recovery was only about 68-69%. Characterization of the Pb flotation tailing showed that 61.4% of the Pb is in the –37 μm size fraction, which is difficult to recover by flotation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out on a plant sample of the lead flotation feed and high-intensity conditioning (HIC) was used to improve flotation recovery. The results showed that increasing the collector conditioning time from 1 to 3 minutes significantly increases the Pb recovery from 42.5% to 57.3%. Further increases in conditioning time to 5 to 7 minutes decreased the Pb recovery. With a collector conditioning time of more than 3 minutes, due to the surface cleaning effect, increasing collector and frother dosage improved the flotation selectivity and recovery, even at higher collector dosages. The Pb recovery increased from 69.1% to 79.8% with increasing impeller speed from 600 to 1250 r/min. HIC increases the flotation kinetics and greatly improves the flotation recovery and concentrate grade.

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. One of the biggest problems in open pit mining is slope stability. The avoidance of slope stability problems depends on a comprehensive assessment of environmental and operational factors such as geology, climate, and mining activities. In the light of these considerations, slope geometries should be determined in accordance with engineering principles. In this research, the slope stability of rock slopes in a mine opened in a gneiss geological unit has been studied. Production activities were ceased in 2019 due to the slope movements in the eastern part of the quarry. In order to safely continue the production, field works were primarily carried out. To assess slope stability, detailed discontinuity surveys were carried out on bench faces. Subsequently, kinematic and numerical analyses were employed to identify geometries that are expected to maintain stability under the prevailing geological structures and environmental constraints. Engineering geological studies such as scanline measurements in steps and investigation of potential failure mechanisms by kinematic analysis technique were carried out. Small module reactor and Q-slope rock mass classification systems were used to evaluate slope stability. Based on these classification systems potential unstable rock slopes were identified and thematic maps were created using geographic information systems. The most suitable slope geometries are suggested for these slopes. In addition, the improvement methods suggested by the rock mass classification systems were proposed for these slopes.

"Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. The Objana Cement Plant is located in central Nigeria, approximately 200km south of capital city Abuja (figure 1). It is the second largest cement plant in Africa, and the fifth largest in the world [1]. The selected mining location is unique as it has all the major raw materials (except gypsum) in close proximity. This includes limestone, clay, marl, laterite soil, and laterite iron. [ ] The plant has a capacity of 5 million metric tones per year (~15,000 tones per day). A 135 megawatt gas-fired power plant, with 90 km of natural gas pipeline, was constructed to power the plant. The total project cost is approximately 1.2 billion US dollars. The lifeline of the plant is two overland conveys totalling 7.7km in length. The first 800m conveyor is relatively mundane. The second conveyor however, is unlike any other troughed belt conveyor in the world. It 6.9km length transports 2,400 T/H and operates at 5.0 m/s. Its ?snake? profile consists of 11 vertical cuvees, and four horizontal curves. The last of which is 2,000m in radius, has a length of 2.2km, and is located at the high tension head end of the conveyor. Although these specifications are noteworthy, the unique feature of this system is that it is entirely elevated from head to tail using a triangulated truss gantry structure (figure 2).

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

The 10.5–12.5% chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel (FSS) plates used to fabricate coal line jumbo wagons is susceptible to undesirable chromium depletion during welding with 309L electrodes. In this work, non-stabilized FSS plates were welded using 308L welding electrodes. The objective was to weld non-stabilized FSSs using gas-shielded metal arc welding without causing sensitization. The welding process was optimized by lowering the heat input. Sensitization was assessed by rigorous etching techniques and anodic polarization scans. In addition, the welds were subjected to tensile testing, and their fracture surfaces were examined for intergranular cracking. Non-stabilized FSS plates were successfully welded using gas metal arc welding.

In this research, the thermodynamic study of sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) solution in the presence and absence of H2SO4 and Fe3(SO4)3 was done. Eh-pH and equilibrium distribution diagrams were constructed using Outotec HSC Chemistry Software and the main stable ionic species were determined. Also, the mean activity coefficient and Pitzer model coefficients were evaluated. Effects of system composition, sodium persulfate concentration and temperature were investigated. According to the results, HS2O7 -, HS2O8 -, S5O3 2-, S4O3 2-, S3O3 2-, HS- and NaSO4 - are the main stable species in these three systems. Increasing of sodium persulfate concentration resulted in disappearing of SO4 2- and the appearance of NaSO4 -. The main effect of increasing the temperature from 25 to 75oC, is changing the stability regions of HS2O7 -, NaSO4 -, SO4 2- and S2-. From equilibrium studies, it was concluded that at 25 and 50oC, increasing the persulfate concentration results in a 55-60% decrease for HS2O7 - and an 20- 30% increase for HS2O8 -. At 75oC, HS2O8 - becomes the main species and its percentage decreases with increasing the persulfate concentration. Keywords: Thermodynamic, sodium persulfate, activity coefficient

Traditional fire assay dates back over 3000 years and has changed very little over that time. The only improvement is to replace the gravimetric finish with dissolution of the Precious Metal bead followed by AA or ICP analysis of the solution. The newly developed FIP A (Fast In-line Fire Assay) method allows full automation of the fire assay process from sample preparation to spark analysis of the Pb button. This results in fully quantitative analyses for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, lr, Au and Ag in typically less than an hour after a sample is entered into the system. Detection limits are theoretically Pt 0.08 ppm, Pd 0.002 ppm, Rh 0.002 ppm, Au 0.08 ppm and Ag 0.002 ppm but in practice the lower measurable limits are about double these figures. Few opportunities have been available to present data obtained using the FIFA system as all FIFA laboratories have been in the domain of a Pt mining company which prefers to keep all Pt analytical matters confidential. However, IMP has recently participated in the round robin exercise to establish recommended values for a new series of Merensky Reef and UO-2 Layer reference materials produced by African Mineral Standards. The precision of the results was excellent being on average Pt 2.05%, Pd 1.25%, Rh 4.08% and Ru 4.94% being expressed as Relative Standard Deviation. The excellent precision is a reflection of the efficient collection of POEs in the Pb buttons and the homogeneity of the Pb buttons. However, the accuracy was not as good. The poorer accuracy is interpreted as the calibration of the spectrometer not being as good as desired due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable range of standards with reliable recommended values for the PGEs. The most recent spectrometer was calibrated with the greatest care and produced slightly better results for Pt, Pd and Rh and slightly worse for Ru.

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. Irgiredmet has substantial experience on RIP and RIL technology for gold recovery, having started development of ion exchange technology in 1964. Irgiredmet specialists were involved in the majority of RIL and RIP projects in the former Soviet Union and Russia, and took part in commissioning of practically all plants using ion exchange technology. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for designing 15 RIP plants of the former USSR using bifunctional macroporous anionite AM-2B or its analogs. This paper is devoted to the laboratory, pilot plant testing and introduction of RIP technology conducted in cooperation with GC Pertopavlovsk. Medium base resin PuroLite S992 (PuroGold) was used as adsorbent. Some adsorption regularities and the affinity of resin to metal cyanide complexes were studied. Laboratory batch and continuous pilot tests on resin-in-pulp process were held for oxidised ores from Pioneer, Albyn and Malomyr mines (Amur region, Russia) owned by the Petropavlovsk company. A simplified flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration was developed. Alkaline cyanide solution was used as gold eluent and gold was recovered from eluates by electrowinning. Process design criteria were developed on the basis of the testwork results, and the plants were designed and constructed by GC Petropavlovsk. The RIP plant at Pioneer was commissioned in May 2008, at Malomyr in August 2010, and at Albyn deposit in December 2011. These plants are currently in operation at design performance at throughputs from 3 to 6.5 Mt/year. The primary gold ores of Pioneer and Malomyr deposits are refractory to cyanidation; Irgiredmet also completed continuous testwork on RIP technology using medium-base resin for pressure oxidation (POX) residues derived from their flotation concentrates. In 2019 a hydrometallurgical plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrate after POX was commissioned at Pokrovsky mine (Amur region). Successful management of mining operations depend on the accurate and reliable measurement of performance as a monitoring instrument in a feedback and control loop. However, when changes are being considered, the probable effect of the change on bottom line results requires different measuring techniques incorporating an in depth understanding which can identify hot spots in the operation which exhibit strong sensitivity to change. The CSIR's Division of Mining Technology has therefore been devoting a considerable effort to the establishment of techniques which enable changes to be analysed in terms of their impact on the two key parameters describing mine performance, i.e. profitability and safety. This paper describes these techniques, outlines their application to some example situations and discusses planned enhancements. The first section of the paper addresses the profitability model, and this is followed by a section considering the mine safety model.

Quality control interventions emanate from process upsets and trends that move product quality beyond the natural variation expected in a stable process. The ability to detect upset conditions and react in an effective manner protects both resource utilisation and compliance to specifications. Product quality control on coal processing plants traditionally relies on the reference (combined sampler and laboratory) system to measure product qualities. The introduction of online analyser (OA) technology, applied in different configurations, creates a second source of measurement information for control decision making. The case study was done on the primary sample stream of the final product stream at Exxaro’s GG7 and 8 plants, part of the Grootegeluk complex. It explores the OLA system’s ability to meet the OEM performance guarantee, perform equally to the reference system without analytical delay time, and assesses the effort to achieve this performance in a by-line analyser (BLA) configuration. In the paper, a conceptual comparison of the two measurement systems is done and the theoretical and practical comparison of measurement performance is discussed. Results demonstrate that the OA outperformed the OEM’s performance guarantee and achieved similar levels of performance to the reference system without the response delay. Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. FeCo alloys play an important role in soft magnetic materials with a wide range of technological applications due to their high saturation magnetization and Curie temperature. However, these alloys have low ductility at room temperature. The ductility can be improved by the ternary addition of elements such as V. A density functional theory supercell approach was used to generate B2 Fe50Co50-xVx (0 ≤ x ≤ 50) structures and the properties were evaluated at different atomic percentage compositions to determine the ductility at room temperature. The structures were fully optimized to obtain better equilibrium ground-state properties such as lattice parameters and thermodynamic properties for both binary and ternary systems. The stability of Fe50Co50- xVx was evaluated from the heats of formation, elastic properties, and phonon dispersion curves. Furthermore, magnetic strength was evaluated from magnetic moments. It was found that all structures are thermodynamically stable due to the negative heats of formation. The calculated Pugh’s ratio and Poisson’s ratio confirm that alloying with V effectively improved the ductility. It was also found that Fe50Co50-xVx showed a positive shear modulus for the entire concentration range investigated, in agreement with phonon dispersion curves. The ternary addition of V to the FeCo system resulted in reduced magnetic strength due to a decrease in magnetic moments. These findings reveal that B2 FeCo-V alloys can be used as components and actuators for the automotive industry.

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. "Tapping operations at ferroalloy smelters generate a significant amount of fume. Effective capture of fumes is required to meet the obligations of environmental, as well as occupational, legislation.A study was completed on an existing fume extraction system at a ferromanganese furnace tapping area. The area under consideration included the tap-hole, launder, and ladle area. The study consisted of site test work as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to identify and evaluate solutions.Site test work and observations during furnace operation provided a baseline of system performance as well as input parameters for CFD modelling. Gas flow rates and energy contents from each extraction area were measured. Photographs and video footage were taken to evaluate areas of fume leakage.The CFD study was firstly validated against site observations to ensure the accuracy of input parameters. Thereafter several modification concepts were modelled and suitable combinations were investigated to ensure robust solutions. The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores.
