"The ore deposits of the Zambian Copperbelt occur in sedimentary strata that have been subjected to relatively mild, flexure-type folding. Unrolling serves to reconstruct the original depositional geometry of the folded sedimentary strata and is in common usage on the Copperbelt both for geological analysis of drill hole data and in routine ore reserve estimation.A computerized method of unrolling was introduced at Roan Consolidated Mines in 1969 based on a standard contouring program. A contour map of the geological structure is drawn from a regular grid of elevations, interpolated from the original, irregularly-spaced intersections. Unrolling is performed across this grid, perpendicular to one or two axes specified by the geologist. Each intersection is unrolled independently, and the new co-ordinates are subsequently processed to produce unrolled maps.The technique has been used successfully at RCM over the last two years in both the estimation of ore reserves and exploration planning."

n this study, silver and palladium nanoparticulate inks with different metal-binder ratios were screen-printed onto a paper substrate. The printed layers comprised the metal nanoparticles and an ethylcellulose binder. The layers are not typical metal composites due to the low concentration of binder and high porosity. The electrical sheet resistivity of each particle concentration was measured, and the data fitted using the scaling law of percolation theory and the general effective media (GEM) equation. The percolation parameters, i.e. the percolation threshold and the critical exponent, for each system were determined from the fits and compared. The percolation threshold for the palladium layer (39.8 wt%) was lower than that found for the silver layer (44.9 wt%). The critical exponents determined for the palladium and silver layers were both lower than the universal value for three-dimensional percolation systems. Microscopy observations indicate that the difference in the percolation threshold for the two layers can be attributed to variations in their microstructure.

THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL GEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION SYMPOSIUM (Summary Account) This Symposium, co-sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Society of Economic Geologists, was held in Toronto, Canada in April, 1970. Over 700 delegates attended from 26 countries. Ninety papers were presented at the symposium and another 18 papers were read by title. The programme included: An Opening Session, Five General Sessions, a session on Remote Sensing Methods, a session on Geochemical Prospecting for Petroleum and Natural Gas, a session on Primary Halos and Lithogeochemical Methods, and a session on Statistics and Evaluation of Geochemical Data. The delegates were welcomed by Dr J. M. Harrison, President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Dr C. H. Smith, Regional Vice-President, North America of the Society of Economic Geologists. Dr D. R. Derry of Toronto delivered the opening address to the Symposium entitled 'Geochemistry-the link between ore genesis and exploration'. Dr Derry considered the various hypotheses on the origin of economic mineral deposits and expressed his belief that the next ten years will show evidence of an increased proportion of ore bodies that owe their origin, at some stage in time, to supergene agencies. He stressed that 'there are no sharp divisions between processes that form and destroy ore bodies at or near surface and those that form or destroy them at a depth of 20 kilometres in the earth's crust. The more we understand about the migration and concentration of metals the more accurately we can apply this knowledge to searching for unknown concentrations, whether at rock surface or at depth. To learn more about these processes of ore genesis we must rely on geochemical studies co-ordinated with field observations'. The five general sessions included accounts of progress in geochemical prospecting in different countries of the world, case histories describing the application of soil, stream sediment, geobotanical and biogeochemical techniques, papers on the behaviour of different elements under varied environmental conditions, discussions on analytical methods and the use of stable isotopes in mineral exploration. It is anticipated that the proceedings of the Symposium will be published late in 1970 or early in 1971 as a Special Volume of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. All registrants at the Symposium will receive a copy of this publication and copies will be available for purchase. At a special meeting called during the Symposium, charter members of the Association of Exploration Geochemists approved a constitution and elected an interim Council which will organize procedure and formulate policy during the coming year. The interim president of the Association is J. Alan Coope, Newmont Mining Corporation of Canada Limited, Toronto, Canada. More information on the constitution and membership in the Association will be distributed to learned societies and technical magazines in the near future. Membership will be open to exploration geochemists in all countries of the world. SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL FOR PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS Report on Registration The Professional Engineers Act (Act 81 of 1968) came into force on the 14th February, 1969. At the time it was recognised that the success of the Act would depend in large measure on the extent to which engineers in South Africa would become registered professional engineers in terms of the provisions of the Act. The promulgation of the Act and its provisions relevant to registration were the subject of considerable publicity during 1969. This has resulted in a rate of application for registration far beyond the capacity of the very active committees set up for this purpose by the South African Council for Professional Engineers (SACPE). The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. The visit which took place on the 18th February, 1972 was a departure in that the places visited had no direct connection with the work in which members of the Institute are normally engaged. It was refreshing and stimulating to see important and involved operations normally outside ones own trend of life and to have experts to speak about technical, financial and matters of general interest concerning their work, not forgetting their troubles and problems and how they overcame them. Carlton Centre The members of the Institute were received by Mr D. Appleton, Public Relations Officer of the Carlton Centre Limited, who introduced Mr L. R. M. Fee of W. Rhodes Harrison, Architect in charge of the project; Mr W. C. E. Skilton of Murray and Roberts, the Engineer in charge of the construction of the complex and Mr A. Home the Senior Operating Engineer of Carlton Centre Limited. Each of these gentlemen addressed the members giving short rundowns on the project with special reference to their particular sphere of the undertaking. A variety of particularly interesting statistics relating to the planning construction and the ultimate operation and maintenance of the complex was given. Mining engineers present had an opportunity to compare the problems encountered by them associated with depth to problems encountered by the civil engineer in the construction of a building rising to such an enormous height. To some of the members a sense of similarity of the labour problems encountered must have been recognised. After tea the visitors were divided into groups, each under the guidance of an official, and then visited the highest floor accessible and thereafter the 19th floor where the internal arrangements for airconditioning, lighting, plumbing, power supply and communication arrangements were explained. Thereafter a visit to one of the seven basements which houses all machinery required to serve this enormous complex enabled the visitors to see the standby power arrangements as well as the refrigeration plant. The visit finished in time to proceed to the Crest Hotel in Hillbrow for lunch. To our hosts for the visit to the Carlton Complex a special vote of thanks is recorded. Strydom Tower In the afternoon the party proceeded to the Strydom Tower where Mr Knight from the Public Works Department who was the Engineer in charge of the construction of the tower gave details on the construction and the extraordinary methods which had to be adopted to achieve the desired objectives and to overcome known as well as unforeseen difficulties. The comparatively short time taken to complete the project and the good safety record appeared to impress the visitors. The final phase of the visit was taken care of by Mr Bothma of Telecommunications Department of the Post Office, who gave an extremely interesting explanation of the telecommunication organization of the Post Office with particular reference to the part the Hillbrow Tower plays in the South African telecommunication system. Both gentlemen answered many questions willingly and interestingly. Following the explanatory talks the visitors were shown the technical equipment housed in the two top levels of the tower. Short explanatory talks gave members an insight into the workings of one of the most important aspects of modern life. Even to the amateur photographer opportunities existed to view and photograph the city from the highest available observation point. We are indebted to Mr Gouws, the Regional Director of the Post Office for granting permission to visit sections of the tower normally not accessible to the general public and to our hosts for the manner in which we were received and entertained on the explanation of the many interesting features of this important installation. In conclusion, the programme for the day can be classified as interesting, of exceptional educational value, and an opportunity to see something of the engineering skills put into two vast and ambitious undertakings and the results achieved.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. This paper will review some methods used to manage geotechnical risk at Damang Pit Cutback. The pit depth is designed up to 250m with push back on the eastern and western walls of the existed and depleted Railway Cutback (RCB) pit. The geotechnical design was presented by SRK Perth, focussing on the optimisation of the bench face angle which finally evolved with ?steep slope strategy?; 24m at 800 and 24m at 750 on the eastern and western walls respectively. The east wall was designed strategically to optimise the proximity of the tailings dam to the final pit crest of the push back. The pit has experienced failure in the weathered profile transgressing through the transitional material into the fresh rock at different location of the east wall since development in July 2005. To ensure stability and to minimise ore loss, the east wall has been redesigned using 700 batter angles and reduced berm width of 4m compared to 800 and 8.5 berm width of 24m bench height. The paper will also discuss how slope failures to the east wall had been sustained, managed and monitored to enhance production. Emphasis is placed on slope management at Damang which includes the principles of wall control blast, visual inspection, slope depressurisation and the state-of-the art of slope monitoring using Autoslope automated prism monitoring. Future slope monitoring is considering the use of 3D Laser and Radar to provide early warning so that evacuation could be effected. The intension is to provide mine personnel the means to identify risk areas during mining activities.

The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. Coal mining in China is facing the transition from output to quality. Based on the total mining capacity and average production, the current situation of coal mining at mine, city, and province levels is analysed, and data in support for the layout of sustainable mining development and the optimization of output provided. The results show that 87% of China's coal is mined by underground methods, with an average production capacity of 0.93 Mt/a per mine. Open pit mining accounts for 13%, with an average mine production capacity of 5.73 Mt/a. The average mining capacity of coal mines in China is 1.05 Mt/a, with 1181 coal mines with an average capacity less than 0.3 Mt/a, accounting for 35% of the total coal mines but contributing only 4.51% to output. They are distributed in about 48 cities in six provinces, seriously restricting the transition to green coal mining. The coal industry should speed up the closure of small coal mines in key provinces and cities, eliminate outdated production capacity in the central region, increase the speed and proportion of coal resources moving westward, and promote high-quality development of coal mining.

Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. The raffinate remaining after the second separation contains 48.4 wt.% Co and 50.3 wt.% Ni. Keywords: Hydrometallurgy, lithium-ion batteries, metal recycling, citric acid, solvent extraction

India is devoid of coking coal resources, which is a vital raw material for coke making. As a result it has to import about 80% coking coal for steel making. Indian National Steel Policy, 2017 has envisaged crude steel production around 300 million tonnes Mt) by the year 2030-31 and forecasts coking coal demand of 161 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum). One way of improving the indigenous resources is to study the performance of existing washeries and to improve the clean coal recovery by adopting suitable technology. A study was carried out, mainly to focus on the fine coal circuit of an existing coking coal washery, to generate the desired quality of clean coal. The operating coking coal washery being studied is presently feeding coal from nine different sources with varying feed ash contents. The coal fines varied in ash content ranging from 19.5% - 43.6%. For treating the coal fines, the washery has operated a spiral for the past few years. Performance studies were carried out, and it was found that the spiral is not efficient in recovering the cleans. Detailed investigations were carried out on the coal fines using flotation techniques, and it was found that to achieve a low ash clean coal, the froth flotation is a much better beneficiation option than a spiral, The studies showed that the recovery of clean coal through a spiral is 67.7% at ash content of 27.0%, while flotation tests showed a recovery of 68.1% at 16.5% ash content. Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X-ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

Grade Engineering® is a term trademarked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and includes five key levers for upgrading ores and rejecting waste prior to expensive downstream comminution and mineral processing. These five levers include natural deportment, induced deportment, bulk sorting, particle sorting and gravity separation. Over the past ten years, CRC ORE has progressed a range of technologies that exploit these levers from laboratory proof of concept through to large scale demonstration and validation. This paper details the work carried out by CRC ORE and Curtin University for assessing the amenability of an ore for its natural deportment and particle sorting attributes in an Integrated Screening and Particle Sorting (ISPS) Grade Engineering® process. ISPS is seen as a preferred method for Grade Engineering® as compared to individually operated unit operations as the benefits of each can be complementary. Furthermore, it is suggested that integrating the two levers has two important impacts: 1. Firstly, there is a risk that isolated particle sorting test results will be misinterpreted as being representative of the full sample without considering the mass balance impact of high-grade material that might have been lost in the fines fraction. This fine fraction will not be detected through the particle sorter. 2. Secondly, and potentially of more valuable impact, is that the opportunity may exist to upgrade the feed first through determining if there is a concentration of high grade to the fine (or coarse) fraction which can be separated through screening. Undertaking screening in the preparation stage of the particle sorting process will enable analysis and separation of the fine or coarse fractions of a rock mass. The result of this study provides the mining industry with an independent framework for undertaking an Order of Magnitude (ISPS) Grade Engineering® assessment on a range of constituent ore types. A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

Current technological advancement has increased the exploitation of deeper ore bodies using underground methods. In certain cases, the mineral deposit starts near the surface and continues deep within the earth's crust. Such deposits are best mined with both underground and surface methods. Two main techniques are used to determine the optimal transition depth from surface to underground - a disintegrated approach and an integrated approach. Both methods have limitations in their use to determine the optimal transition depth. The objective of this research is to investigate the conditions in which an integrated approach to the transition depth problem is superior to a disintegrated approach. Three binary integer linear programming models are developed for this purpose: a surface and underground model for the disintegrated instance and an integrated model. A case study is performed to validate the models, with a comparative sensitivity analysis to obtain operational insights.

INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle.
