"INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. Gandrud and Britton7 show sections of this bed taken at Searles, Ala. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a passive encoder for range knobs, a device that automates the task of obtaining the range settings from devices or instruments to be input to microcomputers. It is easily constructed and installed and will not disrupt the device to which it is being attached. It consists of a custom knob and a small printed circuit board that has light-emitting diodes and magnetic reed switches attached. A ribbon cable connects it to a microcomputer. This encoder eliminates one source of human error in an automated process.

A jet pump injector was developed and successfully tested, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of a jet injector for introducing coarse coal into an operating slurry face haulage system: In Phase I a variety of injection concepts were evaluated, and the jet pump was identified as best, due to its simplicity, compactness and performance potential. In Phase IIA subscale jet pump injector tests were conducted, and a computer model of a jet pump injector was developed whose performance predictions correlated well with subscale test results. In Phase IIB various system configurations were defined for integrating a jet pump injector into a fully operational underground coarse slurry face haulage system, further highlighting the feasibility and practicality of such a system. In Phase III a full-scale mobile haulage vehicle embodying a jet pump injector and coal sizing equipment was detail designed into a practical vehicle with attractive performance characteristics. More importantly, fully operational full scale jet pump injector -and feeder/breaker subassemblies were tested and proven successful in their ability to down-size coal to 3" in all 3 dimensions and to consistantly provide slurry of 4217 weight concentration at 6.4 TPM throughput under a wide range of operating conditions including zero to maximum feed rate within 5 seconds.

"INTRODUCTION Pilot-plant studies on processes for converting low-grade domestic manganese ore to high-grade oxide or sulfide products by pyrometailurgical process was initiated at the Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station in 1942. These investigations were given impetus by the possibility of a national shortage of ferro-grade manganese oxide for war needs.The manganese ore employed-in most of the pilot-plant smelting tests was from the manganosiderite-nodule deposits at Chamberlain, S. Dak. This deposit although low-grade, is extensive and represents, the largest reserve of manganese in continental United States. 6/ The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a Carryall mining-conical rolls treatment method that shows promise of making possible economic removal and subsequent beneficiation of the nodule-bearing shales. 7/ Smelting tests were made also on Artillery Peak, Ariz., mill concentrates in the productions of unrefined manganese matte for the steel The pilot-plant smelting program was based upon the fundamental fact that manganese, like copper, will sulfidize and become miscible with FeS. The matte this formed represents the initial smelting step in the pyrometallurgical treatment of the beneficiated ore. The concentrated nodules containing about. 18 percent manganese were smelted with varying amounts of pyrites and appropriate fluxes to produce Mns-FeS mattes containing 16 to 50 percent manganese. When the manganese and iron was completely sulfidized, the mattes contained 16 to 23 percent manganese. Reducing the pyrite resulted, of course, in the selective sulfidization of manganese and the production of a matte containing a correspondingly higher ratio of MnS to FeS. Complete sulfidization smelting produced slags of lower manganese content and hence resulted in higher manganese recoveries in the matte."

This is the third report published by the Bureau of Mines concerning the washability of Black Creek coal. Both of the former reports.5/6/ dealt with the Black Creek coal at the Bradford mine, Dixiana, Ala., near the northeastern extremity of the Warrior field, whereas the present report is based on float-and-sink tests of coal from what is presumably the Black Creek bed near the southern extremity of the field. Although the Yolande Coal & Coke Co., owners of the property at Yolande No. 6 slope, consider this opening to be on the Black Creek bed, the authors do not feel that there is as yet positive proof that this correlation is correct. There has been little or no development of the Black Creek bed in the Yolande Basin in the past, and a positive identification of the bed at Yolande No. 6 will have to await further exploration and development. The Yolande No. 6 is an exploration slope 3/4 mile north of Rockcastle, Ala. The slope is approximately 400 feet from top to bottom on a dip of 180. As far as the authors can ascertain, coal has never been produced commercially from the Black Creek bed in the southwestern part of the Warrior field. Exploration work in the past has indicated that the Black Creek coal in this area is extremely friable and high in sulfur. Extreme friability would naturally discourage its use as a domestic and railroad fuel, and high sulfur content would be a disasvantage in its use for coking coal. The present study of this coal has been made with particular reference to sulfur elimination on the assumption that it would make a good coking coal provided enough of the sulfur could be eliminated by washing.

In 1943, the Federal Bureau of Mines began a program of thermodynamic investigations of petroleum constituents and related compounds. These systematic, long-range studies, which were conducted in the thermodynamics laboratory of the Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center and are still continuing, have resulted in a substantial quantity of data valuable to the petroleum industry and science in general. As separate phases of these studies were completed, the findings were promptly reported in the scientific press. During the past 16 years, 89 journal articles, giving the results obtained for individual compounds and small groups of related compounds, were published, mainly in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Physical Chemistry. In addition, members of the Bureau staff have contributed six chapters to specialized reference books. This circular, prepared in response to many requests, lists these 95 published papers, giving an abstract of the contents of each, as well as titles, authors, and literature citations. The journal articles are listed in the order of their preparation, which closely approximates the chronological order of their publication; hence, the item number to the left of each citation corresponds to the assigned contribution number. For the convenience of the reader, the abstract section is followed by a condensed bibliography, arranged alphabetically by senior author and keyed to the abstracts by appropriate contribution numbers in parentheses after the entry.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the development, system by system evaluation, and preliminary surface testing of a flywheel-powered shuttle car (FPSC). The use of a self-contained flywheel-power source has the potential to eliminate the numerous safety and routing problems associated with tethered mobile equipment. An alternative to conventional power cable systems was developed consisting of the world's fIrst seven-rotor stacked flywheel system capable of storing 6 kW·h of energy at 16,700 rpm. Numerous interdependent systems were necessary for successful interfacing with a conventional shuttle car. Each of these systems was evaluated and tested individually. Finally, the entire shuttle car was surface tested. The tests indicated that the flywheel energy system can function and operate a shuttle car. The economics of the system and the design of required support systems were not addressed in the project.

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

This report presents a programme of work to demonstrate the use of a surface-based centralised computer control system for the remote monitoring and control of underground conveyors in a US coal mine. The system selected for demonstration was the 'Dynalink' Micro MINOS system which is manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited. The site selected was Barnes S Tucker Lancashire No. 20 Mine located near Carrolltown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The system concept, operating and application software was designed and developed by the. British National Coal Board. The report describes the selection of the site, specification of the system requirements, commissioning, operation and evaluation of the system under typical US mine operating conditions. Experience with the system, based primarily on the system reliability and performance of conveyor control, was favourable. Mine management personnel felt that the system had successfully achieved its objectives and were keen to expand monitoring and control to other activities.

This task report provides the process technology, preliminary design, capital and operating costs for a 25 TPD pilot plant to produce cell-grade alumina using a clay/hydrochloric acid extraction - HCI gas induced crystallization process. The report consists of six volumes: I - Process Technology and Costs; II and III - Equipment Lists, Specifications and Quotations; IV and V - General Specifications; VI - Drawings. The process was selected by the Bureau of Mines as the more promising method to produce cell-grade alumina from clay based on the results of the two previous task reports under this contract: Task I - Comparison of Six Processes (alunite, anorthosite-lime sinter, clay/sulfurous acid, clay/nitric acid, clay/hydrochloric acid evaporative and gas-induced crystallization) and Task 2 - Comparison of Two Processes (clay/nitric acid and clay/hydrochloric acid - gas induced (crystallization). The pilot plant process utilizes a unique dual crystallization process to produce aluminum-chloride-hexahydrate crystals having sufficient purity when decomposed to meet stringent alumina product specifications. The size of the 25 TPD pilot plant has been selected to permit scale-up to commercial size plants of equipment, technical and economic parameters. The capital cost estimate for the pilot plant, exclusive of fee and escalation, for a southeastern U.S. location is $52,311,000 expressed in 1979 dollars. The total time required to construct the pilot plant including engineering and procurement is 32 months. The operating cost to produce the estimated 9,000 tons of alumina required for testing in Hall cells is $40,91[0],190 expressed in 1979 dollars.

The amount of airborne respirable dust generated from break- age of different coals varies widely. This research was conducted to identify the facets of airborne respirable dust liberation from the coal product. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low to high volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust generation. Bituminous coal samples from 8 mines (5 U.S. and 3 Polish) were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low air velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific quantity of airborne respirable dust generated. The results of this investigation build upon previously published results, which indicated that a combination of several factors are associated with the generation of airborne respirable dust. One factor involved is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. However, since coals of high moist fuel ratio (high rank) are generally more extensively cleated, it is suggested in the present work that the degree of cleating is directly responsible for the quantity of respirable-sized particles produced in the crushed product material for eastern U.S. coals. This is implied by the relationship of ash content and at least one mineral constituent (pyrite, determined from pyritic sulfur analysis) to the percentage of airborne respirable dust. To validate this hypothesis, a description is offered that is based on known coal petrography. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The air dry loss moisture factor appears to control the amount of airborne respirable dust that is liberated from the product. The resultant effect of these factors is that different percentages of coal particles smaller than 10 µm are dispersed as airborne respirable dust with a well-defined peak in the normalized airborne respirable dust for a narrow range of air dry loss moisture - ash ratios. A clear delineation of coals, based on well-known proximate analysis characteristics, that generate the most respirable dust appears to be possible. "INTRODUCTION The highly mechanized character of modern warfare makes steel the most vital raw material. The shortage of steel scrap in the United States is forcing the use of increased quantities of pig iron in steel manufacture, so that the rate of pig-iron output will continue to be the controlling factor in steel production. 5/ At the same time, the construction of new blast furnaces is limited both by time and the amount of strategic material available. Under such circumstances, every effort must be made to attain and then maintain maximum pig-iron output from the equipment now in use.When forcing a blast furnace to the ultimate in production the highest standards for quality and uniformity of the coke must be maintained. In view of these facts, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Coordinator for War, is surveying the coke industry to study the various steps in producing coke of higher quality and greater uniformity. 6/ The engineers conducting the survey are visiting key men in coke-oven and blast-furnace organizations to determine, first, the major and most common problems in coke production and use; and, second, the best and quickest method for solving them. Various operators have made good progress in solving individual problems, and a Nation-wide exchange of information among them will make possible widespread adoption of the best practices. It is the purpose, of the survey and reports such as this preliminary one to facilitate such exchange of information. As an outgrowth of the survey, it was soon revealed that many operators could be helped by cooperation with various Government agencies, particularly to procure suitable coals, minor additions to equipment facilities, and tests on certain properties of coal or coke, or specific advice concerning the operation of various types of equipment. The machinery and organization necessary for securing this cooperation have been set up as a part of this work."

"The seventh National Safety Competition, that for 1931, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, was participated in by 350 mines and quarries operating in 34 States. Tables 1 to 5 show the relative standing of the various plants, Bronze trophies, known as the ""Sentinels of Safety,"" which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines were awarded to five companies, each company having established the best accident—prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided — namely, anthracite mining companies, bituminous—coal mining companies, metal—mining companies, operators of nonmetallic mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or open—cut mines. The trophies are awarded for one year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The outstanding feature of the contest of 1931 was the operation of a bituminous coal mine without a lost—time injury to any employee. While accident—tree records had previously been made by certain quarries, metal mines, and nonmetallic mineral mines, never before has such a feat been accomplished by a bituminous coal mine in the National Safety Competition. Whether or not such a record has been made by a bituminous—coal mining company not enrolled is the competition the writer does not know, but it is believed that the case referred to is unique among large coal—mining companies. The mine to which reference is made is No. 1 mine of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Dawson, N. Mex. To that company belongs the distinction not only of being the first coal—mining company among those enrolled in these yearly safety contents to operate its mine without an accident but also of occasioning the 'Sentinels of Safety' trophy for a bituminous mine to take its first journey west of the Mississippi River. For the past six years the trophy has been in West Virginia, Alabama, or Pennsylvania."

Of the about 60 million pounds of aluminum used in the Pacific Northwest in 1960, 40 million pounds or two-thirds was used by 10 companies. One of these companies made airplanes and missiles; one manufactured roofing, siding, and tubing; three produced truck tractors, truck bodies, or truck trailers; two made architectural metal products; one made irrigation and industrial products; one was a general foundry; and one was a shipyard. These companies contributed to regional growth by developing markets outside the area; some have worldwide sales. Aluminum consumption increased at an average rate of 7 percent annually from 1954 to 1960. Airplane manufacture, formerly preeminent in aluminum use, no longer was in first place in 1960. By industrial group, the leading users were manufacturers of building products, 30 percent; airplanes and missiles, 22 percent; truck tractors, truck bodies, and truck trailers; 17 percent; general foundries, 5 percent; ships and boats, 4 percent; mobile homes, 4 percent; other transportation equipment, 3 percent; and irrigation equipment and all other products, 15 percent.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. VOLUME III The objective of Volume III of this report is to provide a concise review of six major types of legal constraints, controls, and regulations on surface coal mining in the United States, as of January, 1976. At the same time, an attempt is made to format the details of federal and state exploration, mining, and reclamation regulations such that point-by-point comparisons can be made and updated as revisions occur. Thus, Volume III should provide both an executive overview and a user's manual of legal controls of surface coal mining.

In its work on mineral wastes the Bureau of Mines is studying losses in the melting of nonferrous metals and alloys. The greatest of these losses is that of zinc through volatilization in brass melting, but another and considerable loss is that of aluminum and its alloys in the melting of finely divided material. In order to get some idea of the magnitude of the loss in melting aluminum scrap and to find out what methods of melting were used information was gathered in regard to present practice; also experiments were conducted to obtain some data on the relative merits of different methods. As the experiments could be made on a laboratory scale only, they were not expected to solve the problem entirely, the object in making them being rather-by indicating which methods were of greater promise-to narrow the field over which largescale tests and comparisons need be made by those commercially nterested in the problem of melting scrap aluminum.

In connection with its renewed study seeking solutions to problems created by release of acid water from bituminous coal mines, the Bureau of Mines recently surveyed reports already written on the subject. This publication is based on that search. The Problem Poor distribution of water is evident on an ordinary geographic map of the United States. The more abundant supplies of surface water appear to be centered in the northeast, the southeast, and the central humid areas of the country. It is in the midst of this abundant surface water, in the Ohio River Valley, that most of the bituminous coal is mined. Varied industry has located in the valley to use the coal and the river. The coal is a source of power and o raw material. The river provides transportation for raw and finished materials; equally important, it provides the water that is used for cooling and processing in manufacturing. It also serves as a vehicle for the disposal of waste.
