Topics covered include transport, charcoal, coal measures, coal, anthracite, bituminous coal, flux, magnetic iron ore, specular iron ore, limonite, red hematite, clay ironstone, black band ironstone, smelting works, blast furnaces of Pennsylvania, Lake Champlain furnaces, Lake Superior furnaces, Cleveland furnaces, Pittsburg furnaces, Missouri furnaces, and those of the southern states. He goes on to describe Catalan hearths, malleable iron works, Bessemer works, the Blair steel process, and labour.

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement

Wind-tunnel tests were carried out of the conditions under which nuisance dust particles (100-1 000 micrometres) become entrained by wind. A laser entrainment monitoring system (LEMS) was used, and was found to provide an accurate means of assessing nuisance dust emissions from a surface. Accurate determination of the threshold entrainment velocity of dusts using the LEMS gives a baseline against which the performance of dust control techniques can be evaluated. Minerals tested included coal, petroleum coke, limestone, sand and pulverised fuel ash. Pilot field trials of a portable wind tunnel equipped with the LEMS have been successfully completed, providing a means of validating laboratory results in the field

Several attempts have been made over the latter half of the twentieth century to devise a system for the classification of underground mining methods. None of these are found to be totally successful. A revised classification is suggested with three main categories being identified by reference to fill requirements, steep stopes and stratified geological environments. Methods always needing lasting mass or structure fill include methods with timber-structured stopes and those with mass-filled (or cut-and-fill) stopes. Methods associated with steep stopes are subdivided into steep-stope-specific caving and steep-stope-specific non-caving (or self-supporting) methods. Methods not in the first two categories, often used in stratified geological situations, are not necessarily restricted to stratified environments and include caving as well as non-caving varieties. This category is further divided into room-and-pillar mining, longwall and shortwall coal mining and the type of open stoping found in gold or platinum reefs comprising overhand, underhand and breast-stoping variations

A computer model has been developed of mine hoisting systems in deep South African gold mines. Particular attention was paid to the contribution of different modelling assumptions for the guides and guide-roller assemblies. Objective functions indicative of guide-roller tyre endurance, slipper-plate forces and perceived vibration levels were introduced to quantify dynamic performance. These objective functions were used to compare models. It was found that the choice of guide and guide-roller models did not influence the forces on the guide rollers significantly for typical shaft and conveyance characteristics at typical levels of viscous damping coefficients. The rigid and finite-element guide models gave the same results as those of the effective-stiffness guide model, and while the latter is suitable for simulation for design purposes, the finite-element model should be used for unusual guide geometries

The visit reported was made with support from the 1997 J.C. Boyle travelling scholarship. The management and control of hazardous gases released into the underground environment are an integral part of coal mining. The power-generations stations at Appin and Tower collieries, with a combined electrical output of 94 MW, have been operating for some time and have demonstrated a technology that is able to exploit the available gas fully. Contributory factors have been the development and introduction of directional drilling techniques, pre- and post-drainage of coal, relatively high seam permeability, a high gas content of the worked seam, high production rates and a willingness to embrace new ideas and technology

Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

"Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Mississippi Valley-type deposits occur in massive, homogeneous dolostones from which diagenesis has obliterated all primary sedimentary structures. The mineralisation forms irregular, lens-shaped stratabound bodies, mostly in the lower part of the dolostones. They are composed exclusively of sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite and barite, with white sparry dolomite a common cementing phase. Mineral zoning can be recognised from pyrite and marcasite in the east to barite in the west. Sphalerite, the most common sulphide, occurs basically as colloform and banded crusts and galena as isolated cubic or skeletal crystals, mainly in the centre of the banded botryoidal sphalerite. The combined observations of the deposits' geology, geochemistry and ore petrology suggest a three-stage genetic model: carbonate sedimentation in a shallow-water environment; dolomitisation, probably after compaction, by fluids of connate origin and lateral evolution; and mineralisation by migrating solutions, perhaps related to oil-field brines, that originated in deep zones of the basin during diagenesis of the basinal mudrocks in the NE"

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The sediment geochemistry of streams draining Southern Uplands and Lake District turbidites was compared with lithogeochemical data for the source greywackes, using stratigraphically defined catchments. Several systematic trends in element abundance variation between source and stream sediment can probably be applied more widely to interpretation of drainage geochemistry. Pb and Zr increase markedly from source rock to sediment, by adsorption on clay and zircon grain concentration. Variation of feldspar-related elements Rb, Sr, K and Ba appears to be controlled by source grain size and compositional maturity. Ni shows surprisingly little change and Fe and Co are only slightly raised. Cr is particularly useful, with variations superimposed in anomalously high regional levels. Abrupt changes in Cr distribution in stream sediment coincide with stratigraphical boundaries, allowing drainage data to be used as a surrogate for whole-rock values

The oxidation behaviour of selenide matte with a substantial Cu content and low Ag differs significantly from that of high-Ag matte. Low-Ag selenide mattes display a large oxygen solubility and the upper boundary of the miscibility gap in the Ag-Cu-Se-O system is depressed to quite low Se contents. As a result, the formation of Ag metal is considerably delayed. The oxidised selenide matte, low in Se and with a relatively high oxygen content, has previously been termed oxymelt. With further oxidation, its composition enters the misciblity gap and crude Ag is formed. The sodium silicate slag captures very little of the SeO2 and the dissolved Ag2O(s) content of the slag is relatively small, with a Raoultian activity coefficient of 0.57. This value was found to be independent of the slag's Cu2O content

Errors in ore reserve estimation can occur during drilling and sampling, sample preparation and analysis, geological logging and modelling, database construction, statistical or geostatistical evaluation, selection of economic parameters, selection of ore reserve method and assessment of mining constraints. Core sample recovery can be a major source of error, and it is proposed that the modelling of grade, metal accumulation and thickness should be accompanied by the modelling of core recovery (or core loss) so that for each ore block a weighted block recovery factor is obtained. This gives a good indicator of the reliability of a reserve estimate. It is suggested that a resource reliability rating (RRR) system be established to quantify what is meant by geological assurance and to combine this with an estimate of the precision of estimation as gained by geostatistical analysis. Proven and probable minable reserves would be those with an RRR better than 50% and a precision of estimation better than 20%

The optimal maintenance and control of the air flow and pressure distribution in a mine network are achieved by the correct positioning of the mine fans and regulators within the mine ventilation circuit. The principal considerations are the location of the main and underground fans or regulators and the attendant control of mine leakage. Air flow control is achieved by either passive or active regulation. Passive regulation adds resistance, usually in the form of a regulating door. Active regulation adds pressure sources in the form of underground booster fans. Ventilation engineers are increasingly turning to analytical tools to assist them in the design and operation of ventilation systems. Variations of the temperature and steam/moisture content of the air with distance and time are modelled for a single airway. The input for the simulation is an air temperature that varies with time, together with the moisture/steam content that results, for example, from a fire with a given distribution of heat and of fume concentrations at the beginning of the airway. The transport of heat and moisture to the surface of the wallrock is assumed to be simultaneous. Such multiphase convection may result in evaporation from the moist wall close to the fire and recondensation downstream. The modelling of this non-linear effect is a unique feature of the new simulation. A new analytical solution is used to calculate the conduction of transient heat within the rock mantle, which, in the event of a fire, is typically a short-term process. This allows for an arbitrary variation of surface temperature with time - unlike that permitted by the age function solution, which is limited to stepped temperature changes. An iterative numerical scheme that has recently been developed to simulate mine climate is used to calculate the coupled transient heat conduction and multiphase surface heat transport in successive length increments along the airway. To demonstrate the simulation procedure a numerical example is presented in which a fire with a given distribution of heat and fume concentrations with time is located at the beginning of an airway

Leaching experiments were carried out on a spent catalyst sample with a honeycomb structure, containing 47.5% Ti, 5.8% Mo, 2.7% Si, 2 035 ppm As, 52 ppm Pb and 8.8 ppm Hg. More than 93% of the Mo and As was removed by direct alkaline leaching after grinding to 80% -36 micrometres. The residue contained 0.3% Mo and 60 ppm As. To obtain a TiO2 matrix with 30 ppm As, acid leaching at controlled pH with 90 kg/t Al scrap was followed by oxidising alkaline leaching. Treatment of the direct alkaline leach solution or of the mixed solutions from the two-stage process involved two successive operations: purification by neutralisation with Al(OH)3 addition to raise the Al concentration to 4 g/l, and ion exchange on Amberlite IRA 94 S resin. Whatever the type of solution treated, elution with 200 g/l NH4OH solution gave an eluate of very high purity containing 164 g/l Mo, less than 70 mg/l V and less than 2 mg/l As

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Rock engineering system performance monitoring using neural networks.) Synthetic and analytical approaches to objective-based design of rock engineering projects are discussed. Rock masses are considered as complex dynamic systems with components that concurrently interact with each other and their environment. The existence of a rock engineering system canon (i.e. a set of systems governing rules) is proposed. Its possible components are highlighted and an application is demonstrated using a "rock mass automaton" designed to simulate dynamic heat distribution in rock. In the example given, the canon implements the basic result from probability theory applied to the thermodynamics of solids. Rock engineering system performance is reduced to the mapping of the output of a rockmass to varying input (design) options, within the state space of the systems model. The Kohonen Self-Organising Map provides an extremely useful analytical tool to reduce the hyper-dimensionality of rock engineering system behaviour. Further, the hyper-dimensional state vector is mapped "quasiconformally" such that the neural map tends to spatially organise similar input state vectors, facilitating interpretation of rock engineering system behaviour (performance monitoring). Work is reported on the development and validation of the automation as a basis for an internal representation of the rock mass bahaviour. The results are reported of simulations compensating for the uncertainty of the exact mechanisms operating within the rock mass, using additive noise with the input state vector in the training stages of the self-organising map implementation. Initial work on adopting Grossberg's Adaptive Resonance Theory neural network architecture for classification of rock engineering systems behaviour is also presented

A theoretical model is described for prediction of the capacity of fines from porous ores, such as cokes and sintered ores, to be removed by a pneumatic, horizontal-type classifier prior to charging into a blast furnace. First, the influence of variation in the apparent density and drag coefficient of porous ores on removal efficiency is analysed from a stochastic standpoint. The effect on efficiency of collisions between particles in the classifying region is then examined analytically in relation to the ratio of the mass flow rates of particles and air (the loading ratio). Finally, a theoretical model is constructed that takes these factors into account. Theoretical and experimental results are compared and classifying efficiency is discussed from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints.

Geochemical mapping provides a direct approach to delineating areas of epigenetic mineralisation and for relating the regional distribution of this mineralisation to an overall tectonostratigraphic and structural framework, as well as to extensive areas of hydrothermal alteration. Organic lake sediment is a widely available and effective sampling medium for regional geochemical mapping in Newfoundland, that has proved to be valuable in Au, Sb and W exploration

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.
