Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

Granite ores are composed of silicate minerals and a variety of valuable REE (rare earth elements)-bearing minerals, however the processing technique to recover these valuable minerals is not yet developed. In this study, the recovery of REE-bearing minerals by dry magnetic separation and wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS)-settling from surface sample and from drill core sample, respectively, of a granitic REE-Zr-Nb ore deposit was investigated. The two samples have different mineralogy however in both samples, light REE are commonly contained in REE carbonate minerals while Y and heavy REE are commonly contained in zirconium silicate minerals and pyrochlore. The liberation size of the REE-bearing minerals in the two samples ranges from 10-250 ?m. Previous flotation testwork conducted on the drill core sample reported high recoveries of La2O3 (88%) and Ce2O3 (88%) but low recoveries of Y2O3 (42%), ZrO2 (17%), and Nb2O5 (29%). The objective of this study was to obtain higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling. Both processes implemented the application of a low magnetic intensity to initially separate the ferromagnetic minerals then a high magnetic intensity to recover the REE-bearing minerals. The results showed higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling indicating the potential of magnetic separation and gravity separation in recovering the heavy REE-bearing minerals. WHIMS-settling is more recommendable than dry magnetic separation because of its applicability in treating a wider range of particle size. In the WHIMS-settling, the light REE, Y, and Zr minerals were recovered mainly by applying four stages at high magnetic intensity of 21,500 gauss while the weakly magnetic pyrochlore was recovered mainly by decantation of the nonmagnetic slurry after a short settling time of 0.25 to 0.50 h. "We studied the mechanism of structural and chemical transformations of columbite, tantalite, zircon and feldspar surface during the treatment by high – power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) using the methods of X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), analytical electron microscopy (SEM - EDX), Kelvin probe force microscopy and flotation experiments. According to XPS and SEM - EDX data, major changes in the atoms chemical state of investigated minerals surface are related with formation and modification of functional cover and changing in concentration (% at.) of hydroxyl groups on the mineral surface, leading to increase in the contrast of technological properties of the rare metals minerals. Research has identified the optimal parameters of HPEMP - treatment of rare - earth minerals Npuls ??104, Ttreatment ??100 sec. improving the selectivity of the flotation separation of columbite and zircon. The difference in mineral recovery into the froth (? e) before and after HPEMP - treatment was about 11 % and 24.5 %, respectively. No significant increase was observed in the flotation activity of feldspar. This study's findings demonstrate the effectiveness of HPEMP - treatment in inducing a controlled change in the structural and chemical properties of rare - earth minerals and improving the process efficiency for the processing of rougher tantalum - niobium gravity concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of improving the processing methods of tantalum-niobium ores and concentrates is explained by the mineralogical properties of rare - earth ores. These are properties such as the variable mineral, chemical, and grain size composition, complex morphometric properties, and the dissemination of ore mineral grains of micro - and nanometric size. Iron oxide and hydroxide films on the mineral surfaces neutralize the surface physicochemical and absorption properties of the minerals. Both in Russia and globally, nonconventional (non - mechanical) methods are being developed based on physicochemical, electrochemical, and pulsed energy impacts to improve the efficiency of disintegration and liberation processes of disseminated mineral complexes and to enhance the contrast of the structural, chemical, and technological (floatability) properties of refractory ores. This study is devoted to the investigation of the applicability of high – power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP – treatment) for the change in the structural and chemical properties of rare - earth minerals and improving of the flotation properties contrast."

This paper aims to study the influence and action mechanism of collector Y-89 on the flotation of auriferous pyrite. The measurement to identify adsorption quantity, IR and XPS spectrum analysis and flotation experiment made on the pure mineral were conducted. The research results show that when the dosage of MIBC is 20 mg/L, and pH of 8, the dosage of Y-89 over 60 mg/L, the pyrite recovery rate is greater than 80%.And when the dosage of Y-89is 60 mg/L, dosage of MIBC 20 mg/L, the pH in a wider range (pH=4~9), the recovery is greater than 75%. When the pH is above 10, the pyrite is depressed and its recovery rate is found to be dramatically dropping. Adsorption quantity measurement also shows that the strong alkaline conditions inhibit the adsorption of Y-89 on the surface of auriferous pyrite. IR measurement indicates that chemisorption of Y-89 occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite. XPS spectrum analysis indicates that without adding Y-89, oxidation reaction occurs on the surface of pyrite. But when Y-89 is added, the chemical environment of Fe on the surface of pyrite has changed. Such findings indicate that with Y-89, chemisorption occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite.

Fengning ilmenite ore is a magnetic deposit in gabbro containing high phosphorus and low titanium, the main minerals in which are ilmenite, magnetite and apatite. The dissemination size of magnetite is so fine that even the percentage of -0.010mm level is up to 36.50%. The fine and vein magnetite are distributed in gangue and ilmenite, so the majority of the magnetite is difficult to be separated from the gangue. Ilmenite is difficult to be recovered by low-intensity magnetic separation even through fine grinding. In high-intensity magnetic separation of ilmenite, the gangue inter-growth with the magnetite and the Fe-containing silicates may be enriched in the concentrate, and the ilmenite of the concentrate will be reduced. Based on the processing mineralogy research, combined gravity-flotation process is suggested to recover the ilmenite. The method is also good to reduce phosphorus in the ilmenite concentrate.

In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.

This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

This paper presents the research on comprehensive recovery of copper, gold, silver and iron from tailings from high-intensity magnetic separation in Tonglushan Mine. By comparison of experimental results of three flowsheets?regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation, water heating enhanced sulphidizing flotation and acid leaching-sulphidizing precipitation flotation, it is concluded that regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation flowsheet has the best economical and technical performance and practicability. Regrinding and using the mixture of sodium hydroxamate and sodium xanthate are two of the notable technical characteristics of this best flowsheet. The system for comprehensive recovery of tailings has been put into production. It not only can recover the valuable minerals from tailings in Tonglushan Mine, but also can reduce the environmental pollution, resulting great economic and social benefit.

Based on full investigation of the characteristic of sphalerite in the residue obtained from cyanidation leaching process and the study of the mechanism of the interaction between flotation reagents and sphalerite with the aid of electrochemical analysis, the reagent named YO was developed for eliminating the depression effect of CN- on sphalerite and reducing the dosage of CuSO4. The achievements have been used in commercial production for the treatment of the cyanidation residue to recover the zinc minerals, obtaining a zinc concentrate with grade of 56.49% Zn and recovery of 86.63% Zn.

The present study aimed to investigate the bioleaching efficiency of moderate thermophilic microorganism in a growth medium without Fe supplement on three different size fractions of spent catalyst obtained from petroleum refinery. All the experiments were conducted on shake flasks at a temperature of 65 °C and a pulp density of 10% (w/v) on three size fractions viz. 45-106 µm, 106-212 µm and >212 µm and a working volume of 100 ml comprising of 10 ml of microbial inoculums and 90 ml of Modified Kelly medium. The parameters like pH, redox potential, viable planktonic cell count and the amount of acid addition was measured and quantified on regular basis to follow the progress of the bioleaching. The pH varied much in the lag and logarithmic phase of the experiments but stabilized toward the stationary phase. The total acid additions in each batch experiment were determined the amount of Conc. H2SO4 requirement, which ranged between 683-757 kg/ton of spent catalyst. The redox potential values ranged between 625-650 mV, Ag/AgCl, but were very low ranging between 350-450 mV during initial period. The planktonic viable cell count ranged between 108-109 cells/ml active in the bioleaching system, without any toxic influence of the spent catalyst, but initially due to fall in redox potential and new environment for the microbes, their population was low. The leaching yield of Ni was found to be promising with very high leaching yield of 92-96% followed by Al as 61-62%, which means both Ni and Al leaching were favored by the moderate thermophilic bioleaching compared to the mesophilic bioleaching. There was very little difference in the leaching yield, when compared with different size fractions and hence grinding can be avoided prior to leaching. This process seems to be economical as no Fe source is supplemented together with no requirement of grinding and over all a biological process resulting for an eco-friendly process for future optimization of the metal recovery from petroleum refinery spent catalysts. The aim of the present paper is to review the current technologies for arsenic removal in the copper metallurgical industry, and to show the progress made with some promising emerging strategies, involving the pre-treatment of copper-arsenic concentrates by selective flotation or by alkaline leaching with Na2S-NaOH solutions. The advantages of alkaline leaching are the selective dissolution of arsenic and antimony, the high extraction yield, and the practically nil loss of copper, which remains in the clean copper concentrate as a CuS residue. Alkaline ?cured? ? a procedure similar to ?acid-cured? in conventional leaching ? improves arsenic extraction and reagent consumption, making this an interesting technology for the treatment of high As-Sb concentrates. In light of recent advances on the selective flotation of enargite and tennantite, the importance of redox conditions to control the flotation/depression of enargite-tennantite from copper sulfides has been well established. However, problems of selectivity must still be solved. Additionally, the limitation imposed in some cases by the need to recover the molybdenum by-product must be considered. The application of selective flotation to obtain a high-arsenic or ?dirty? concentrate and its sub-sequent treatment by the alkaline leaching process is suggested.

The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

Effects due to some metal cations, such as Ca2+, Mg2+,Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Al3+ etc., which are produced in the pulp when the complicated ore is dipped in the deioned water, on the flotation of chalcopyrite and galena with the isopropyl thionocarbamate as collector have been studied. It is found that chalcopyrite floatability is not influenced by these cations, and the cations can be di-vided into three types according to their effects on the purified galena?s floatability with the same conditions, as activator such as Cu+; as depressant such as Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ , unaffective such as Mg2+ and Ca2+.

The Chelopech Mine, located in Central Bulgaria, is one of Europe?s largest underground copper- gold mines, currently mines and processes approximately one million tonnes of ore per year. Copper concentrates containing gold and silver with significant arsenic content are produced and sold on the world markets. The operation was acquired by Dundee Precious Metals in 2003. A modernization program for the Mine and Plant has since been in progress to increase both production and mechanical reliability, and also to optimize metallurgical recoveries. Since then, mine output and plant throughput have doubled, plant availabilities and utilization have increased significantly, and overall metallurgical performance for copper and gold improved. The paper presents the systematic approach for obtaining and analyzing data, communicating it, and making suggestions for changes to the technological parameters and flowsheet in order to maximize metal recoveries. These studies have correlated the ore characteristics (particle size distributions, metal assays, and Cu and Au mineralogical and phase analyses) with the actual plant performance (kinetics, recoveries, and throughput). Cu recovery by size has been calculated from the mineralogical analyses of feed, concentrate and tails, with the most significant losses being identified in terms of fraction and phase recoveries. This has provided the recommendations (some of them tested in plant) for changes in the grinding and flotation circuits.

This paper presents gold occurrence investigations on the altered rock gold deposit from Jiaodong area of China, and comparisons of gold occurrence in the ore samples from different mining levels. According to the results, the chemical and mineral compositions of raw materials from different mining levels are quite similar. However, the relative content and grain size of gold minerals are quite different between the two mining levels of -130m~-340m and -550m~-650m. In the ore of upper mining levels of -130m~-340m, electrum is the dominant gold mineral and accounts for about 80% of the total gold minerals, while native gold is minor and accounts for about 20%. As for the ore of deep mining levels of -550m~-650m, the major gold mineral shifts to native gold which accounts for 67%, while the ratio of electrum drops to about 33%. Coarser gold grain size was observed in the upper mining level ore with a mean size of 33.05µm while the gold grain size was much finer in the ore of deep mining levels with a mean size of 22.85µm. Furthermore, the gold mineral associations also show different patterns between the upper mining level samples and the deep mining level samples. Of the three observed gold association types such as inclusion gold, fissure gold and interparticle gold, more inclusion gold was found in the ore of deep mining levels. The inclusion gold accounts for 62% in the ore of deep mining levels, while that in the ore of upper mining levels accounts for about 56%. Further study revealed that the dominant gold associated minerals are pyrite and sulphides and only a small amount of gold is associated with quartz and silicates. It was shown that the altered rock gold ore from Jiaodong area can be regarded as a free milling gold ore, but the processing parameters should be optimized for the ores in different mining levels according to the different gold occurrence. In addition, it was predicted that enhanced gold liberation is necessary for the ore in deep mining levels.

The processing of pyrite concentrates may be accomplished with a preliminary enrichment due to withdrawal of iron sulfides from initial concentrate. The withdrawal of iron sulfides is possible with the help of magnetic separation when the magnetic iron sulfides (pyrrhotites) separate from non-magnetic fraction?the sulfides of non-ferrous metals. The conversion of non-magnetic pyrite to magnetic pyrrhotites of adjusted structure occurs because of roasting with the withdrawal a part of sulfur. The resultant pyrrhotites are strong ferromagnetic with hexagonal structure. This paper contains results of studying magnetic properties of pyrrhotites, findings of the de-composition of initial pyrite with the consequence homogenizing of product and hardening of product of decomposition in liquid nitrogen. Define the type of pyrrhotites super lattice structure, was established that at increasing of sulfur contention the magnetic properties of pyrrhotites are change ? pyrrhotite begin evince the properties of antiferromagnetic material and magnetic susceptibility of material is interruptive changing from 0 to 1.7×10-3~1.9×10-3 SI units/g system. The paper contains results of technological researching of pyrrhotizing-magnetizing roasting of pyrite concentrates in different condition: in unoxidizing, with the decreasing contention of oxygen and in autogenous regime in air atmosphere. Established that the magnetic susceptibility of products depend of pyrite degree dissociation and achieve 2×10-3~3×10-3 SI units/g system at 40%~45% desulphurization. Defined the conditions of steady regime autogenous roasting, at resultant products possess coefficient of magnetization, and this can be used magnetic separation for separating ferromagnetic pyrrhotites from gangues and non-magnetic sulfides of non-ferrous metals. This technology of pyrrhotizing roasting is recommended for effecting in industrial condition. The initial materials and products of roasting subjected to chemical, thermogravimetric, Moss-bauer spectroscopy and X-ray analysis, defined the magnetic properties.

With the growing environmental concern, as well as the increasing concern for sustainability of natural resources, the need of improving the performance and efficiency of today?s crushers is be-coming increasingly important. However, the development of existing crushers requires an extended basic knowledge about the crushing process itself. The aim of the present study is therefore to find the theoretically optimal way of crushing compressively under given circumstances. In the present paper, optimizations have been performed with the purposes of maximizing product yield and minimizing energy consumption. Performed on an ideal crushing stage free from physical limitations, the optimization results have been obtained in terms of number of compressions and their corresponding compression ratios. Complementing earlier results on interparticle breakage (Hulthén et al., 2006), presented here are thus the results from corresponding optimizations with single particle breakage and interparticle breakage. It is concluded that modern crushers are not working optimally in any of the studied aspects for gneiss. In fact, optimizations indicate that a lowering of the compression ratio, as well as a shortening of the crushing sequence, are theoretically favourable. The outcome of this study is therefore highly promising as to giving new ideas and suggestions of improvements in existing crushers, and can even result in redesign of compression crushers.
