Social issues are increasingly recognized as significant inhibitors to mineral development projects. Increasingly social risk is being recognized as a key factor determining the success of a mineral investment. Groups opposed to a mine for social or political reasons often use environmental impacts, real or perceived, to prevent mine development. These risk factors depend largely on cultural perceptions of mining activities and must be understood as such in order to be appropriately managed. A first step to addressing social issues is inclusive, transparent and meaningful engagement of stakeholders. This process allows stakeholders to understand what the other parties value in order to collectively establish a common currency for development and the creation of mutual value. Expanding the scope of benefits and values a mine can bring is of increasing importance to mining companies who typically consult outside specialists remote from the mine site and late in the development timeline for this purpose. Training technical staff, engineers and geologists, who make initial and ongoing contact with local interests, in a holistic approach to mine development is crucial to successful and economic mineral development projects. Further extending this conversation to the general public, media governments and non-governmental organizations is a necessary step in developing a meaningful discourse on the benefit of mining activities.

"In mining and minerals industry, except profitability, there are some crucial factors that represent components in economic machinery of a mine and related activities. These are sustainability and minimizing environmental impact factor. Environmental concerns combined with the water and energy availability and related costs, as well as public license to operate all contrive to demand for more efforts targeting sustainability. Mining industry is highly energy-intensive (estimated to consume 6-7% of total world’s energy), with varying the energy efficiency across the industry resulting in significant costs. Size reduction is the main energy consumer contributing to almost 50% of the total energy used in mining. That means efforts must be made to introduce energy efficient comminution flow-sheets and machineries for sustainable development. Since the crushers are more energy efficient than mills, it is logic to push down-sizing in crushing stage(s) as far as technically possible. That has been strategy for Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology in supplying advanced and effective crushers to provide fine crushed product for subsequent milling stage. Lowering the energy consumption and related costs as well as increasing throughput have been the main objectives in design and development of comminution circuits and related machineries. Inefficiency in comminution technology, particularly in grinding, has long been regarded as a major area for investigation and development, especially when production of fines and ultra-fines are considered. In an attempt to explore the potential of fine crushing and its effects on subsequent milling process the fine crushing performance of Sandvik’s conventional cone crusher and Vertical Shaft Impactor (VSI) in pilot scale to define the energy consumption and circulating load in fine crushing. Tests were conducted to obtain fine crushed products at P = 2 mm in a close circuit. Furthermore, the crushed products were characterized and compared by grind-ability, morphology, and surface area measurement tests. Finally, the energy consumption to grind the crushed products to specific grind size was calculated."

It is now common to have archival history of thousands of sensors sampled every second over long time. Yet we frequently have process engineers complain:??.We are drowning in data but starving for information??. How can these rich data sets be put to use? This paper addresses the issue of information and knowledge extraction from data with emphasis on process and performance monitoring including fault detection and isolation. Most of the major plant, factory, process, equipment and tool disruptions are avoidable, and yet preventable fault detection and diagnosis strategies are not the norm in most industries. It is not uncommon to see simple and preventable faults disrupt the operation of an entire integrated manufacturing facility. For example, faults such as malfunctioning sensors or actuators, inoperative alarm systems, poor controller tuning or configuration can render the most sophisticated control systems useless. Such disruptions can cost in the excess of $1 million per day and on the average they rob the plant of 7% of its annual capacity. Over the last decade the fields of multivariate statistics and data visualization and analysis methods have merged to develop powerful sensing and condition-based monitoring systems for predictive fault detection and diagnosis.These methods rely on the notion of sensor fusion whereby data from many sensors or units are combined with process information, such as physical connectivity of process units, to give a holistic picture of health of an integrated plant. Such methods are at a stage where these strategies are being implemented for off-line and on-line deployment. "The study of the properties of mineral processing suspensions is important in understanding how a circuit might behave. As soon as the predominantly dry ore enters a wet milling stage the ore properties undergo changes as a ‘slurry’ is created. Slurries can be classified in terms of their physical properties (particle density, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape), and their flow properties such as rheology. Slurry flow regimes are classified into true homogeneous, pseudo homogeneous, heterogeneous and fully segregated, and only true homogeneous and pseudo homogeneous suspensions can be characterized by their flow structure. A class of the heterogeneous regime are the so-called dense phase or settling slurries - those which result in a clear water surface on standing, although they may approach a pseudo homogeneous state if suspended for a sufficient period of time. They are usually extremely difficult to characterize by their rheological properties alone and the rheological characterization of these slurries has always posed a problem, especially at higher concentrations. Previous rheological studies have focused on the individual concentrator units dealing with milling, classification, pumping, flotation, fine grinding, thickening.In this work an attempt was made to characterize two ore types (copper and a Platreef platinum ore) using a custom built Paterson and Cooke tube rheometer, at concentrations up to 43% by volume. After applying a turbulence correction, results showed Bingham plastic behavior. A conventional vane rheometer was then used to compare the rheological behavior of platinum concentrator streams. A size criteria was used to identify any rheologically dominant streams."

"The presence of calcium and magnesium in the hydrometallurgical processing of base metals, results in a number of process difficulties. These problems range from the contamination of the final product (where the final product is a precipitate) to high energy consumptions and large bleed streams during electrowinning. Calcium poses an additional problem in sulphate solutions owing to the low solubility of its sulphate salts. This can easily lead to a process stream that is supersaturated with calcium sulphate, resulting in unwanted solids formation within the process equipment.Several processes are reviewed for the control of calcium and magnesium. Of these, fluoride precipitation was selected for experimental investigation. This method involves the addition of a soluble fluoride to precipitate CaF2 and MgF2. The experiments showed high selectivity for calcium and magnesium over the base metals. The experiments also showed magnesium precipitation to dominate for calcium to magnesium molar ratios greater than 1:3.To avoid the domination of magnesium precipitation, a flow sheet is proposed whereby only a portion of the base metal stream is subjected to fluoride precipitation. For the precipitation, a 10% excess of ammonium fluoride is used to remove the maximum amount of calcium and magnesium. After precipitation and solid-liquid separation the split-stream is returned to reduce the overall calcium and magnesium concentration of the base metal stream."

Gangue minerals can often have severe adverse effects on selective value mineral separation. Such effects can be mediated through a variety of pathways or mechanisms. One popular mechanism is that of ?slime coating? or heterocoagulation, wherein the gangue mineral fines are believed to coat the value mineral surfaces and thereby reduce selectivity and floatability. Another pathway that has received relatively little attention is that mediated through the effect of gangue minerals on pulp rheology, and consequently selective separation. Our recent work in developing a scientific understanding of these effects has highlighted the prevalence and importance of this pathway. In this study, the impact of shape and morphology of serpentine gangue minerals on suspension rheology and selective Ni flotation from ultramafic ores was investigated. We found strong evidence for micro- and macro-network formation in the presence of acicular (needle-shaped) or fibrous minerals, which impacted pulp rheological properties. Results also supported the hypothesis that morphology has a greater role to play than mere shape. The size of the network ranged from 5 microns to 2 cm depending upon the amount and aspect ratio of fibrous minerals. These networks impede many flotation sub-processes, such as gas dispersion and bubble-particle interactions. Additionally, the small pore size of the networks prevents bubble penetration leading to a large transport of the gangue minerals to the concentrate via lifting of the entire network by bubble flux, which resulted in a significant grade dilution. Based on the scientific insights generated in this study various techniques have been developed to improve selective value mineral separation. "Liberation is a key driver in all mineral separation processes as it limits the maximum possible grade for a given recovery. In flotation, this is further complicated by the fact that it is surface exposure of the floatable minerals that determines the ultimate performance. Liberation, grade and surface exposure are commonly quantified using Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled to Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) analysis of polished sections. The intrinsically 2D nature of this technique can result in significant sampling errors and stereological effects that can affect the quantification of the ore’s textural characteristics. X-ray micro-Tomography (XMT) is an imaging method that can non-invasively and non-destructively delineate ore fragments in 3D, thus providing an alternative method that eliminates the need for stereological corrections and readily provides surface exposure. A methodology and automated algorithm were designed for extracting this information from images of closely packed particles, thus allowing samples containing a large number of particles to be assessed.The main drawback of XMT is that, unlike SEM/EDX, it cannot directly measure the mineralogy of the sample, instead producing a 3D X-ray attenuation map. We therefore also present an algorithm for calibrating the thresholding of the XMT images based on SEM/EDX images of sections through the same sample, thus allowing the liberation analysis to be carried out on a 3D mineral map in which the uncertainty in the mineral assignment is small and statistically quantified.The methodology was tested on low grade porphyry copper ore as this is both an industrially relevant and traditionally difficult system to quantify using XMT due to the similarity in the X-ray attenuation of the sulphide species, especially the pyrite and chalcopyrite. As each 3D volume imaged contain 100-1000s of grains, large data sets can be readily produced. By dividing these particles into classes based on both their surface exposure and grade, the extent to which there is preferential breakage of the particles can be assessed—an important consideration if sufficient surface liberation for good flotation performance is to be achieved at coarser particle sizes. It is also shown that erroneous conclusions can be drawn when basing the analysis on 2D sections through the particles."

Data from autogenous and semi-autogenous tests in a 1.67m diameter mill have been analysed in terms of a new model for rock abrasion. This model defines specific rate as the rate of production of fines (material less than 13mm) per unit mass of rock, where the term “rock” is applied to all ore pieces of ore coarser than the grate size. In most cases, an allowance for preliminary rounding and cleavage was made. A method has been developed to analyse steady-state data, using piecewise fitting to the cumulative size distributions. The model was compared to the well-established models, which are based on the population balance method. The specific rate increased for all rock sizes as the volume of 100mm balls in the mill was increased. Tests using a coarser feed and smaller balls provided further evidence that once rocks are rounded, abrasion is due to localised surface damage, caused by impacts, rather than rotational shear. An allowance for rapid rounding of jagged rocks, followed by less rapid abrasion of rounded pebbles was also tested, but the analysis was not conclusive. The average specific rate is a useful measure of the capacity of a primary mill. The effect of power intensity (kW/t of ore) was also investigated as a means of extrapolating the pilot-plant data to large production mills.

In the flotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions not only ionic strength but also chemical composition, flotation pH and mineral properties play an important role. As a result an improvement or depression may be observed. A strong improvement in the floatability of hydrophobic bituminous coals and other inherently hydrophobic minerals is characteristic for the "salt flotation process", which is carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions at natural pH and without addition of any flotation reagents. However, pH is a key factor when saline and hipersaline waters with hydrolyzing metallic ions are used as process water. In the case of flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores in seawater, molybdenite is strongly depressed by the Mg2+ hydrolysis products when pH is raised to depress pyrite. Process water with a high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, and this also includes seawater, have deleterious effect on the anionic flotation of industrial minerals with fatty acids. The flotation of potash ores is carried out in NaCl-KCl saturated brine (6-7 mole/L of NaCl and KCl) with the use of long-chain amines. Such a high electrolyte concentration changes dramatically the amine Krafft point making the collector insoluble in brine; its mode of action entirely differs from that in conventional flotation processes.

"Following the adopted strategy for making the production modern, efficient and environmental friendly the Company completed a stage of the integrated program aimed at reconfiguration of its processing capacity.Upgrade of the Talnakh Concentrator with commissioning of two start-up facilities (SF) allowed an increase of 30% in its ore processing capacity up to 10 mtpa. In addition to a new high-tech equipment installed, a new concentration process was adopted offering the main advantage of 25-30% reduction of sulfides in concentrate. New concentration technology enabled the total amount of produced nickel concentrates (from Norilsk and Talnakh Concentrators) to be processed at upgraded smelting facilities of Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant and allowed decommissioning of smelting capacities of Nickel Plant resulting in emissions reduction by 30%.Nornickel plans to boost the capacity of Talnakh Concentrator to 18 mtpa by 2022, after commissioning of the 3rd SF. This will provide a shorter route for ores transportation from Talnakh mines along with improvement of cost/performance ratio of ore processing through the usage of the modern equipment and optimized concentration flow scheme. Total capacity of Talnakh Concentrator will be sufficient to process ores from Talnakh deposits with planned upstream assets development taken into account. Volume of ore mined from Norilsk deposits to be processed at Norilsk Concentrator will be also increased.Upgrading the crushing section at Kola MMC Concentrator in 2015 provided finer particles of the crushed ore, resulting in 6.6% increase in specific capacity of ore mills as well as 1% higher recovery of non-ferrous metals due to improved liberation of ore minerals.In 2015-2017 the Company was actively engaged in optimization of existing process flow schemes and parameters of Kola MMC, new high-performance reagents were adopted for concentration process, namely, collectors, depressors, flocculants. These measures allowed the Concentrator to reduce its annual operating unit costs and ensure sustainable production of concentrate with the lower grade of the incoming feedstock.Launched in October 2017, Bystrinsky GOK’s Concentrator was 3D designed and received a range of advanced technological solutions.All design process procedures and technologies rolled-out at the Company’s concentrators were developed by Russian R&D institutes, with the key role of Gipronickel Institute, R&D Service of Kola MMC and Polar Division's in-house Engineering Support Centre."

"Gold (Au) extraction is inefficient when crushed waste mobile phones (WMPs) are directly leached by ammonium thiosulfate likely because of the cementation/precipitation of dissolved Au in the presence of base metals like copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and/or aluminum (Al). This study applied physical separation techniques to remove base metals as well as plastics and concentrate the Au containing fractions from WMPs prior to leaching. Coarse fraction of crushed WMP (+2-5.6 mm) was pretreated by jig and magnetic separation to remove plastics and base metals like Fe, Cu, and Al, while the fine fraction (-2 mm) was pretreated by flotation, and float and sink separation. The leaching results showed that Au extraction increased in both of the size fractions. In the coarse fraction, Au extraction increased by as much as 2-fold after pretreated (from 4 to 7%). Improvement of Au extraction in the fine fractions after pretreatments were even more dramatic. Au extraction increased from 4 to 61%. These results indicate that physical pretreatment to remove co-existing common metals and plastics is effective to improve Au extraction from WMPs. INTRODUCTION Global sales of mobile phones are expected to increase steadily in the foreseeable future because a lot of people buy newer phones with upgraded and more advanced functions almost every two years, which leads to the higher generation of waste mobile phones (WMPs). WMPs contain a wide variety of materials including plastics, glasses, base metals and precious metals such as gold (Au). Among all the valuable materials in WMPs, Au accounts for over 80% of its total metal price (Park et al., 2017), so recovery of Au from WMPs is needed."

"A stochastic model of mineral texture is discussed and used to demonstrate that grain association within the intact texture has a significant effect on the liberation characteristics of breakage products. The majority of previous models have simulated texture and liberation of binary systems. This new model is able to simulate complex multi-component (multi-mineral) aggregate textures and their breakage products. Grain size distributions can be defined for each of several minerals. Mineral-mineral associations can be controlled by inserting mineral grains within grains of another mineral. Repeated Monte Carlo sampling of the aggregate is used and the liberation properties of the fragments are calculated. These are analysed to generate data in a similar form as reported by mineral liberation analysis systems, including density distributions, liberation distributions, and particle class distributions. Simulations results are presented where the model has been fitted to complex sulphide ores with four minerals. Comparison of the simulated particles and experimental data show that the model is able to reproduce similar particle class distributions as measured by QEMSCAN. The texture of real complex ores can be simulated and fitted to conventional mineral liberation analysis data. The model should provide a useful and practical means of modelling the effects of mineral texture on separation processes and in geometallurgical models."

"Particle size measurement is one of the most important factors in obtaining peak performance of the mineral processing plant in order to ensure efficient milling and flotation circuit operation. Off-line particle distribution analysis technologies only allow an infrequent check of the ore slurry size and hence do not allow for timely process monitoring or intervention. Most existing on-line particle size analysers suffer from a variety of disabilities such as poor statistics, non-representative sampling or mechanically complex setup. This paper will describe an Ultrasonic Extinction based method which overcomes many limitations of existing online analysers and has proven its performance for mineral applications over many years. Installation examples will be given. Since new technologies usually raise e questions about comparability and agreement to common particle size analytical methods e.g. sieving or laser diffraction analysis, extensive studies were performed comparing these different technologies to quantify the quality of results as well as its mathematical robustness."

"The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated in two slurry systems, i.e. gold cyanidation and geopolymerisation. The kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced and the cyanide consumption was reduced in the cyanidation of a pyrite concentrate using ultrasonication, probably due to the prevention of leaching passivation, the improvement of the dissolution of the gold host sulphides and the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate. The effectiveness for ultrasonication was improved with the injection of oxygen and the addition of dithiophosphate through enhancing the formation of the oxidation radicals and selectively inducing cavitation bubbles directly at the sulphide interfaces. Ultrasonically enhanced cyanidation could render currently uneconomic deposits viable for extraction by improved cavitation efficiency with the aid of surfactants.Ultrasonication increased the compressive strength of the formed geopolymers through accelerating the dissolution of the Al-Si materials, strengthening the bonds at the solid particle/gel phase interfaces, enhancing the polycondensation process and improving the formation of semi-crystalline to crystalline phases. The use of power ultrasound will yield high-performance geopolymer materials."

"Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data - especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment.However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model.An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc, not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance.It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together - in a single step.However, the success of the Mine to Mill - project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from ore body model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling.However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements - not on the business model.This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies.Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning."

Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. The future silicon feedstock is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon. There will probably be a more direct solar-grade silicon route, excluding the electronic-grade silicon "detour". Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this. Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain.

"The major ilmenite reserves are located in India at Chavara (CH), Manavalakurichi ( MK) and Chatrapur, Orissa (OR). India stands first in terms of ilmenite reserves, which are estimated to be 278 million tonnes out of which, 142 million tonnes are processable. Mineralo-chemical analysis shows that Chavara ilmenite is the most weathered one with about 60% TiO2 while Chatrapur is the least weathered with about 50% TiO2. Co-existence of ilmenite with pseudorutile, rutile and haematite is observed in substantially varying amounts in the three deposits. It is observed that the tropical weathering rather than the source rock difference has apparently played an important role in imparting major compositional and structural dissimilarities among ilmenites in different places.In processing of ilmenite through the Becher process, aeration rusting of pre-reduced ilmenite is found to be the rate limiting step thus, affecting the productivity of the process. Investigations have proved that the addition of some organic compounds such as glyoxal, sucrose etc., to the system accelerates the reaction to such an extent that the rusting time has been reduced to less than half.A new route of processing ilmenite for synthetic rutile has also been developed in which, ilmenite is carbothermally reduced and then processed through plasma route. The slag thus obtained is processed further to get high-grade synthetic rutile, metallic iron and high purity iron oxide. The process has been scaled up in a continuous moving bed plasma reactor. It is technologically and economically more viable where, all the iron values are recovered as salable byproducts. This paper describes the salient features of the technologies developed for the beneficiation of ilmenite to synthetic rutile."

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

"Due to multiple experiences in the field of planning and engineering of processing plants for secondary materials the Chair for Processing and Recycling of Solid Waste Materials decided to develop a software tool that supports the engineering and the planning of the basic layout of processing plants for secondary material flows. The detailed description of the material flow and its characteristic parameters is one of the main tasks to be worked out and should be considered as the basis for representative simulation results.The description of the material flow and its characteristic parameters is based on a fraction vector containing 12 material fractions. This is a compromise between a detailed material flow description and a compact and therefore time-extensive calculation model. Each material fraction is characterized by 15 parameters, which can be edited with the help of an easily accessible user-interface. In addition to basic parameters like ignition loss, water content and calorific value more parameters like the material fraction-specific particle-size distribution are contained. Using the model library SimuRec, the processing success and the recovery of complex processing plants for secondary materials can be predicted."
