Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set-up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method which could be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

The first hydrothermal mineral deposits found at a seafloor spreading center were discovered in the Red Sea by multi-national research vessels between 1963 and 1965. At that time, the deposits were considered a special case related to continental rifting and an early stage of opening of an ocean basin. Since that time, examples of almost all major varieties of volcanic- and sediment-hosted hydrothermal deposits associated with basaltic rocks in the geologic record have been found at present spreading centers. Review of over 100 hydrothermal mineral occurrences presently known at oceanic ridges and rifts indicates that a range of deposit sizes from small to large (> 1 x 106 tonnes) occurs at all seafloor spreading rates. However, larger deposits but fewer per unit length of spreading axis appear to form at slow- than at intermediate- to fast-spreading centers based on available data. Larger deposits are more common in sediment-hosted than in volcanic-hosted settings regardless of spreading rate. A spectrum of hydrothermal deposit varieties (stratiform, stockwork and disseminated sulfides; various forms of sulfate, carbonate, silicate, oxide and hydroxide deposits) occurs in almost all of the tectonic settings. High-intensity, ore-forming, subseafloor, hydrothermal convection systems that conserve heat and mass and concentrate hydrothermal precipitates are extremely localized by anomalous physical and chemical conditions relative to nearly ubiquitous low-intensity hydrothermal activity at and flanking seafloor spreading axes at all spreading rates. A regional assessment of the aggregate potential of the Scotian Shelf is presently being funded through a Canada-Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development. This assessment includes testing of seabed materials for their suitability in a variety of concrete, asphalt and other specialized applications. The glacial and postglacial Holocene history of the Scotian Shelf has been favourable for the formation of large deposits of sand and gravel that have potential for use as marine aggregate resources. Large banks and inner shelf areas of the seabed consist of basal transgressive sand and gravel of the Sable Island Sand and Gravel Formation. These sediments accumulated during the late Wisconsinan postglacial transgression, through sorting of glacial materials that were originally deposited beneath marine terminating glaciers. Some sandy deposits occur as low-stand deltas on the inner shelf at 70 m water depth and were formed during the maxi- mum low sea level stand, in early postglacial time, at approximately 12 000 yBP. Modern sediment transport processes have contributed to the formation of areas of large sand bedforms, such as the Cape Split sand wave field and other isolated sand waves of the inner Bay of Fundy, and Eastern Shoal on Banquereau. Sandy sediments, found in many transverse channels in the nearshore, offer a potential for placer gold where proximal to adjacent onshore epithermal gold deposits. Lithothamnion covered gravel occurs as a thin lag overlying glacial sediments in much of the nearshore. Relict gravel beach ridges have been eroded and redistributed through sub-littoral processes after passage of the transgressing beach front. Multibeam bathymetry, sidescan sonograms and high-resolution seismic reflection profiles are the main survey tools. Ground truth consists of large volume seabed samples, vibrocores and photographs. A preliminary assessment of the aggregate potential indicates that very large volumes of suitable aggregate lie in the offshore of southeast Canada.

Introduction Marine Autonomous Systems are making rapid progress from their early years as research tools for university departments & government institutes into having a growing number of real-world applications for industry, academia, statutory inspection, data acquisition and defence. Deep sea mining offers a distinct set of challenges that are very well suited to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and to a lesser extent for autonomous surface vehicles. Deeper, smarter, more capable Global demand for rare earth metals and high-grade ore will inevitably lead to exploitation of deep ocean resources as terrestrial reserves become depleted or remain unavailable for political or environmental reasons. Winning production licenses from the international seabed authority and especially gaining public trust to undertake deep sea mining activities and licenses will depend upon high quality pre-exploitation scientific surveys of the sea floor ecosystem, and subsequent monitoring of the impact of mining activity and remediation work. The actual area covered by the seabed mining operation may be quite small in terms of square kilometres, but still larger than can be patrolled by tethered ‘eyeball’ class Remote Operated Vehicles, so multi-spectral inspection, assessment and monitoring will be more effective when carried out by untethered AUVs. By using seabed recharging stations and data upload points the AUV can stay in situ in the deep ocean, rather than be repeatedly brought back to the surface.

The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. Brothers volcano (34°51.7?S, 179°03.6?E) is a large caldera volcano that forms part of the active Kermadec arc south of 32° S, NE of New Zealand. It is an elongate edifice striking NW-SE that is ~11-13 km long by 7-8 km across. The caldera has a basal diameter of 3-3.5 km and is surrounded by 350-450 m high walls with the floor 1,850 m deep. A volcanic cone of dacite composition rises 350 m from the caldera floor and partially coalesces with the southern caldera wall. Much of the caldera construction and the location of the hydrothermal vent sites are controlled by intersecting basement structures. Three hydrothermal sites have been recognized at Brothers; NW caldera, SE caldera and cone. Multiple hydrothermal plumes were mapped from the bottom of the caldera upwards to a depth of 900 m and originate from two of the sites; one on the NW caldera wall the other atop the cone. Analyses of these plumes show that the two vent sites are chemically distinct. The cone site itself hosts three distinct vent fields (summit, upper flank, NE flank) that in 1999 had plumes (mainly from the summit) containing relatively high concentrations of gas with a shift of -0.27 pH units (proxy for CO2) and H2S concentrations up to 4,250 nM, particulate Cu (PCu) of 3.4 nM, total dissolvable Fe (TDFe) of 4,720 nM, TDMn up to 260 nM and Fe/Mn values between 4.4 and 18.2. However, in 2002 plumes from the summit vent field had noticeably lower concentrations of PCu (0.3 nM), TDFe (175 nM), and Fe/Mn values of 0.8, although similar TDMn (220 nM) and shift in pH (-0.22) suggesting a state of flux for this site. By contrast, plumes originating from the NW caldera site have much less gas with a pH shift of -0.09 units and no detectable H2S, TDFe up to 955 nM, TDMn up to 150 nM, and Fe/Mn values of 6.4, and have not changed their composition over the same three year interval indicating a more chronic hydrothermal system. Plume d3He results show helium is decoupled from more near-surface vent fluid sources although a shift in R/Ra values from 6.1 ± 0.5 in 1999 for the combined vent sites to 7.2 ± 0.1 in 2002 indicates a less radiogenic input of helium over three years, suggestive of a greater magmatic input to the system.

One hundred ninety nine beach face sand samples from an equal number of beaches from the Mexican Pacific were studied. Based on petrological and chemical analysis some locations have been studied in more detail. Black sands from the following areas are discussed: (1) west Baja California Peninsula, where black sands rich in magnetite and ilmenite have maximum values of 50% iron and 14% titanium in the very fine sand fraction; (2) east Gulf of California, in its northern portion, the black sands show maximum values of 43% iron and 5% titanium in the fraction 2 to 4 0;-(3) the south Mexican Pacific, characterized mainly by medium sands, moderately well sorted, show that the fine sand fractions reach values of 35% iron and 41% titanium. X-ray fluorescence applied on selected samples constituted by feldsarenites and lithic feldsarenties, showed the presence of rare elements in some of the studied samples.

A program of surveying and studying the surficial sediments of northern Juan de Fuca Strait was undertaken between 1988 and 199 1. Detrital sediments were mapped from the intertidal zone down to 100 m depth along the slopes of a series of shallow coastal marine terraces. The sand heavy mineral content was examined over this region and sediment geochemistry and assays were performed on selected samples both offshore and from beaches along the coast. The coastline of southwestern Vancouver Island has numerous streams, with a history of small Au placer extraction, which empty into the strait to the south. Only very minor evidence of this was seen in values from isolated locales. However, one beach presented a remarkably different mineralogy and geochemistry from the remainder of the coastline. From the beach to 800 meters offshore heavy mineral contents were greatly elevated and Ti values were as high as 1.4% of the sand fraction. Minerals were relatively fresh and angular, with mineral percents distinctly different than those found elsewhere along this coastline. No stream of substantial size crosses this largely sandy-gravel beach. A series of studies identified the source of this small marine placer as having its origins n the tailings from a submarine pipe broken short in the next bay. A Cu-Au mine 1.5 km upstream, closed by the mid 1970's, had processed its ore underground and piped the crushed tailings to the submarine discharge pipe. The crushed material has been transported and concentrated with the longshore current and been sorted by strong coastal swells. Ilmenite/titanomagnetite from the homblendized basalt of the mine is the source of the Ti enrichment.

Hydrothermal sulfides were recovered from the16°50?S triple junction area in the North Fiji Basin, at a water depth of ca. 1900 m. The chimney samples can be divided into three groups according to their major metal contents: 1) type 1 (Fe-Cu-rich), 2) type 2 (Fe-Cu-rich with minor Zn), and 3) type 3 (Zn-rich) chimneys. Type 1 chimneys are mainly composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly precipitated under high temperature conditions (> 300°C), such as Cu, Co, Mo, and Se. Type 3 chimneys consist dominantly of sphalerite and marcasite with traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly associated with low temperature (150 to 250°C), such as Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ga. Type 2 chimneys show mineralogy similar to that of type 1 chimneys but their metal contents range between type 1 and type 3 samples. Trace element compositions of basaltic rocks indicate that magma generation in the triple junction area was influenced by two different sources: N-MORB and E-MORB. Sulfur and lead isotope patterns of the hydrothermal chimneys show distinct differences between the type 1 and type 3 chimneys. For example, type 1 sulfides are depleted in 34S and have lower Pb isotope ratios compared to type 2 and 3 chimneys. The d34S values (0.4 to 5.6?) of chimney sulfides are typical range of sulfur isotope composition of sediment free mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system. Type 2 and 3 sulfides show slightly higher d34S values than type 1 sulfides, which can be explained by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluids followed by mixing of saline solutions with ambient seawater. Lead isotope compositions of the chimneys indicate that the Pb in type 1 and type 3 chimneys originates from hydrothermal leaching of N-MORB and E-MORB volcanic rocks, respectively. Considering that both these chimneys are located in the same area, our model suggests that type 1 chimneys formed by hydrothermal circulation controlled by an intrusion of N-MORB magma; the fluids were not influenced by boiling during the formation of type 1 chimneys. In contrast, type 3 chimneys are younger and were formed by hydrothermal circulation closely related to E-MORB magma intrusion at shallower depth. The necessary conditions for phase separation of the hydrothermal fluids that formed the type 3 chimneys might result from changed P-T conditions in a shallower high-temperature reaction zone beneath the hydrothermal venting site. Under these conditions the fluid may cross the two-phase boundary for seawater, ensuring subcritical phase separation. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of these chimneys suggest that type 1 and type 3 chimneys were probably black smoker and white smoker, respectively. Type 2 chimneys might be product of low-temperature replacement of type 1 chimneys, which is related to formation of type 3 chimneys.

Onslow Bay is a broad, shallow, high-energy shelf system bounded by the Cape Lookout and Frying Pan shoals. It is generally a sediment-starved shelf system dominated by hardbottoms with a scattered and discontinuous veneer of mobile Holocene sediments. Phosphate-rich beds of the Miocene Pungo River Formation crop out in a belt 150 km long and up to 50 km wide across the continental shelf in Onslow Bay, North Carolina. Previous research has demonstrated that a few of these beds contain vast quantities of potentially economic phosphate resources that occur in the surface and shallow subsurface sediments. Onslow Bay contains five phosphate-bearing beds predicted to include up to 20.7 billion tons of in-place phosphate concentrate with total sediment grades ranging up to 22.9% P2O5 and adjusted average concentrate grades of 29.8% P2O5. These phosphates are lithologically and chemically similar to phosphates currently being mined in the nearby Aurora phosphate district in North Carolina. Various lithologies of the Pungo River Formation and associated rock units of Oligocene and Quaternary age crop out on the sea floor to form extensive hardbottom habitats that dominate almost 100% of Onslow Bay. A large proportion of these hardbottoms appear to be sea floor deserts, whereas others are virtual oases with rich associations of benthic organisms. These important differences in benthic community structure appear to be greatly influenced by one or more of the following variables: 1) geologic framework (geologic formation, hardbottom composition, morphology, and spatial orientation relative to dominant currents and waves), 2) texture, movement, and accumulation of surface sediments, and 3) flow rates and chemical composition of discharged submarine groundwater.

This is a part of the joint KIGAM-GNS-NIWA 3-year study of ferromanganese nodules on the Campbell Drift, east of Campbell Plateau to determine age distribution, growth rates and geochemical evolution in relation to geographic setting. During the research voyage SAA3 by R/V Tangaroa (TAN 9909) in July-August 1999, seafloor sampling and camera towing were conducted along the two transects across the known flow path of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) perpendicular to the lowermost margin of the Campbell Plateau and Bollons Seamount. The four major nodule facies, SHH (slope hydrogenetic nodules with high density), AHH (abyssal hydrogenetic nodules with high density), ADH (abyssal diagenetic nodules with high density), and ADL (abyssal diagenetic nodules with low density) were identified. Two additional minor nodule facies, SIB (slope irregular nodules with ice-rafted boulders) and SHB (slope hydrogenetic nodules with boulders and crust), of localized distributions are also identified.

The Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior and the State of Hawaii Department of Planning and Economic Development are investigating the cobalt-rich ferromanganese oxide crust deposits found within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. The objective of this investigation is to complete a preliminary resource assessment and an Environmental Impact Statement for potential leasing of mineral rights to these crusts. The results of this effort will be summarized and published in a Draft Environmental Impact Statement in March 1986. Three oceanographic cruises to deposit sites in the Hawaiian Islands EEZ were conducted by the University of Hawaii in 1984. As a result, data and sample analysis yielded the following resource estimates (in thousand tonnes): (1) total crusts - 378,500; (2) cobalt - 2,500; (3) manganese - 76,200; (4) iron - 59,700; and (5) nickel - 1,400. These estimates do not include key factors such as deposit continuity, recoverability, and environmental sensitivity. A preliminary attempt to quantify some of these factors for one particular deposit is in progress and will consist of detailed field studies followed by laboratory analysis. Similar evaluations of the Johnston Island EEZ have also begun and are based upon field work conducted by West German researchers and the U.S. Geological Survey. The Johnston Island EEZ appears to have crust resources about as large as those contained in the entire Hawaiian EEZ.

Phosphate deposits on the southeastern U.S. coastal plain have long been the major force in world phosphate markets. World markets continue to grow, but the role of U.S. resources is rapidly declining. This situation results from a complex interaction of economic, political, and environmental factors. Causes for this ongoing erosion of the U. S. market include 1) escalating costs, 2) changes in land-use patterns, 3) environmental pressures oh conventional mining techniques; 4) exhaustion of shallow, high-grade resources in Florida, and 5) increased, low-cost production in other countries throughout the world. In fact, some agencies and commodity personnel predict that the U.S. will become a net phosphate importer early in the next century. If this projection is correct, the U.S. industry must look towards major changes in the near future in order to continue to compete in the world market. One possible change includes development and application of unconventional mining techniques to cheaply recover vast 'new' potential resources in areas with lower land-use pressures. These 'new' resources include 1) deep phosphorites within major sediment basins of the southeastern coastal plain and 2) subsurface phosphorites on the continental shelf and within the U.S. EEZ. These latter resources include extensive deposits in Onslow Bay, N.C.; broad regions offshore of Savannah, Ga. and Cape Canaveral, Fla.; and the central portion of the west Florida shelf. A number of Articles contained in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea III (UNCLOS) bear directly on legal issues related to the recovery of mineral deposits on the ocean floor. Mineral resources of the continental margin other than oil, gas and hydrates include, sand, gravel, shell, coral, gemstones and phosphorite. Jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of these deposits is determined either by the Territorial Sea claims of a coastal state or their recognized sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). At least 33 coastal states have the right under Article 76 (Continental Shelf regime) to claim seabed jurisdiction beyond 200 nautical miles (EEZ limit). In addition, several states have "Pioneer Investor" status with regard to seabed resources in international waters (The Area). A global maritime boundary database (GMBD) has been developed as a basic resource identifying the current claims of coastal states. It provides detailed information on existing boundaries and limits determined by the UNCLOS accords or by multi-lateral agreements which affect mineral exploration and exploitation. Methane and hydrogen sulfide vent from a cold seep above a shallowly buried methane hydrate in a mud volcano located 24 km offshore of Los Angeles, California in 800 m water. Bivalves, authigenic calcite, and methane hydrate were recovered in a 2.1 m piston core. Aragonite shells of two bivalve species are unusually depleted in 13C (to -19? d13C), the most 13C-depleted shells of marine macrofauna yet discovered. Carbon isotopes for both living and dead specimens indicate that they used in part carbon derived from anaerobically oxidized methane (AOM) to construct their shells. Although the?d13C values are highly variable among specimens, most fall within the range -12 to -19?. This variability may be diagnostic for identifying cold-seep/hydrate systems in the geologic record. Authigenic calcite is abundant in the cores down to about 1.5 m subbottom, the methane hydrate horizon. The calcite is strongly depleted in 13C d13C = -46 to -58?) indicating that AOM was the main carbon source. Three sources of methane are likely: a geologic hydrocarbon reservoir, and biogenic and thermogenic degradation of organic matter in basin sediments. Oxygen isotopes indicate that most calcite formed out of isotopic equilibrium with ambient bottom-water, under the influence of gas hydrate dissociation and strong methane flux. High concentrations of Ag, Hg, Cd, Tl, and other elements in mud volcano sediment reflect leaching of basement rocks by fluids circulating along an underlying fault. Fossil (geologic) methane was likely transported with these fluids.

After the simulated ‘mining’ experiment (INDEX) in the Central Indian Ocean (in 1997); the restoration of benthic environment was monitored for 4 years (2001-2005) at 5 locations in and around the test site and at 3 reference stations (20-80 km) from the test site. A comparison of long-term monitoring data with the pre-mining and post mining observations has shown that: • The concentration of silt fraction which was the highest (50-60%) at most locations during ‘pre-mining’ and ‘post-mining’ phases, had reduced (40-50%) during monitoring phases. • There was a corresponding increase in clay concentration (50-60%) during the monitoring phase, implying change in the size of sediment particles settling on the seabed, a trend that was also observed at the reference locations. • The initial increase in water content and decrease in shear strength after the experiment, which appeared to be returning to normal in monitoring-1 (2001), was reversed during subsequent monitoring phases (2002-2005), indicating changes in benthic environmental conditions. • Sediment organic matter and pore-water chemical data have not only indicated partial restoration of geochemical properties after the experiment, but also cyclic changes during the monitoring period.

"SUMMARYSeamounts are underwater mountains caused by volcanic activity. They are of great oceanographic interest because of their local and basin-scale influence over ocean systems, their often unique ecosystems, and because they are associated with the formation of ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts. These crusts are of particular interest to scientists because they are rich in some of the rare elements increasingly required for development of renewable technologies. When the possibility of mining such seamounts is considered, an inter-disciplinary study of seamount hydrodynamics, crust formation and ecosystem sensitivity is required. MarineE-tech is one such multi-disciplined project that has been commissioned to address these different aspects in order to improve understanding of the viability and desirability of mining Fe-Mn crusts. This paper describes a key part of this study, namely the development of a model, informed by hydrographic observations, of the currents around one such seamount and the in situ validation of a sediment disturbance plume model as a pre-cursor to assessment of the potential effects of mining activity.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese crusts are thought to form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from oxygen depleted mid-water known as the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Oxidation rich waters, typically at depths of about 800-2200 m (Hein et al, 2000). This range of depths coincides with the flanks and summits of many seamounts. The ferromanganese crusts found on seamounts have been found to have high concentrations of rare elements, like Tellurium, that are considered critical to low-carbon energy production. Seamounts are complex environments: in terms of the local hydrodynamics that tend to trap water over the seamount due to the Taylor Cap effect (e.g. Chapman and Haidvogel, 1992) and which can enhance the productivity of seamount waters through upwelling (Lavelle and Mohn, 2010), in terms of the microbiological activity that leads to the precipitation of the Fe-Mn crusts, and also in terms of the often unique ecosystems that are the product of the “island” nature of seamounts and the upwelling of nutrients. The understanding of this complexity is a necessary journey towards the realization of viable, yet environmentally responsible, mining schemes. The formation of crusts will be influenced by the local (and larger-scale) hydrodynamics. The exploration of promising crust sites could be made much more efficient by understanding where the most prospective deposits are likely to occur. Knowing how to remove these crusts without impacting significantly on the local environment will be a pre-requisite for such mining to be acceptable to the public and funders alike."

The source of ore metals for base and precious metal volcanogenic massive sulfide (vms) deposits has been debated for decades. Metals can be obtained from high-temperature sea water-rock reactions in subseafloor circulatory hydrothermal systems, or provided by the magmatic fluids that are degassed from magma. The magmatic signatures are largely erased in the hydrothermal system by the overwhelming, long-term circulation of seawater. Melt inclusions in phenocrysts (plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene) of volcanic rocks provide an effective means of understanding the potential for a magmatic contribution to the ore-forming fluids. We present results of a melt inclusion study on the volcanic rocks that host active seafloor hydrothermal fields in the eastern Manus immature back-arc pull-apart basin of Papua New Guinea and an Ordovician-age back arc in New Brunswick, Canada that hosts the ?giant? (330 mmt) Brunswick #12 vms ore deposit. A fluid phase is typically observed in cavities within melt inclusions, indicating that the magma was saturated with volatiles prior to its eruption. The fluid is CO2-dominated with lesser H2O and CH4 in melt inclusions of mafic volcanics and is H2O-rich in felsic volcanics. Tiny crystals and amorphous precipitates (recrystallized at Brunswick #12) of Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu and Mn chlorides, sulfides and oxides coat the walls of the vapor cavities. The crystals include magnetite, magnesite, calcite, anhydrite, gypsum, barite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, halite, silicates and apatite. At Manus, the compositions of the precipitates on the bubble walls of melt inclusions are similar to those found in the vesicles in the matrix glass of the same sample. The ore metals in the volatile phases changed from Ni+Zn+Cu+Fe ? Cu+Zn+Fe ?Fe+Zn (+Pb?) as the magma evolved from basalt, basaltic andesite ? andesite, dacite ? rhyodacite, rhyolite. Glass of the melt inclusions compared to that of the matrix of the rocks from Manus have significantly higher concentrations of H2O (av. 1.64 vs 0.7wt%), Cl (av. 2500 vs1300 ppm) and S (av. 900 vs 100 ppm) suggesting that these volatiles were extensively exsolved from the magma. A minimum of 1.0 to 1.7wt% of magmatic volatiles is estimated to have been degassed before and during the eruptions. The focused discharge of a magmatic fluid as a result of pre-eruptive degassing could be responsible for the metals in the sulfide deposits on the seafloor. If 1 km3 of magma were emplaced in a shallow chamber, then the associated magmatic fluid would be 35.1 million tonnes. If this fluid contained 2.3 wt% Zn and 7.2 wt% Cu (Yang and Scott, 1996, Nature), a total of 0.8 million tonnes of Zn and 2.5 million tonnes of Cu would be to the hydrothermal system.
