Stress induced, gravity-assisted failure processes typically dominate long before stress levels approach the strength of the intact rock (at approximately smax > 0.4UCS where smax = 3s1 ? s3 and UCS is the Unconfined Compressive Strength of the intact rock (Martin et al. 1999)). Under these conditions, discontinuities typically become clamped and the failure process becomes brittle. This brittle failure process is dominated by new stress induced fractures growing subparallel to the excavation boundary. While it is possible to identify areas with the potential for brittle failure, for example, using the general assumption that brittle failure will occur in areas at right angles to the major principal stress (Hoek et al., 1995), when the threshold smax > 0.4UCS is reached in areas around the tunnel boundary, or elastic modelling and the Hoek-Brown brittle parameters proposed by Martin et al., (1999) (i.e. m? 0 and s ? 0.11), amongst others, recent observations discussed by Everitt & Lajtai (2004), and Kaiser (2005; 2006) suggest that brittle failure processes are enhanced when structural features such as joints, weakness zones, bedding planes or foliations are preferentially orientated around the excavation boundary creating stress raisers which in turn facilitate the stress-driven rock mass disintegration process (e.g., as illustrated by Everitt & Lajtai (2004) on Figure 1b). Such weaknesses induce stress heterogeneities that thus promote tensile-spalling failure processes (Diederichs 2000). The observations suggest that stress induced damage can occur ?prematurely? depending on the orientation of micro and macro structures in situations where the known stress conditions should not yet initiate brittle failure processes. In general, when structural features (micro and/or macro), especially foliations, are present in a rock mass, the strength is effectively reduced, largely due to tensile strength heterogeneity in areas depending on the orientation of the structural features with respect to the excavation boundary. As a result, stress induced damage could occur in areas not normally considered due to the influence of anisotropy (Figure 1).

"The oil sands industry is still fairly young with the first viable oil sand operation having been started in Alberta in 1960. Since then numerous modifications and improvements have been tried and implemented. The current process makes use of high velocity pumping of oil sands slurry with hot water (hydrotransport) to achieve separation of bitumen from the sand.A number of the oil sands processes have been adapted from unit operations that are used in mineral processing, such as crushing, screening, flotation, cycloning and thickening. This paper outlines a typical oil sands process flowsheet and investigates the differences and similarities in technologies and costs to other mineral processing industries. It also considers the very large throughputs required, and presents some of the difficulties and challenges currently faced by the industry as a result of high demand for oil and environmental pressures.INTRODUCTIONOil sands (also known as tar sands) deposits are found throughout the world. The Athabasca Oil Sands deposit in Aberta is the largest of these. Oil sands consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil), silica sand, clay minerals, and water. Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes. A series of small-scale tests was conducted to evaluate the effect of micro-fracture development, imposed by blasting, on the material properties of the rock as well as its resistance to crushing and grinding. The uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, Poisson’s ratio, Pwave, S-wave velocity, point load test index, crushing, and grinding work indices were evaluated for samples without any blasting load and for samples which had received a variety of blast loads ranging from a single impact with a lowstrength detonating cord to a combination of impacts at different times and significant impacts with powder factors close to those used in practical blasts. It was shown that the rock mechanics parameters change even at low impacts, suggesting easier crushing of the rock. Damage values appear to be affected by timing as stress wave superposition affects the damage process. Fragmentation is achieved at higher impact levels while work index modification of the fragments is also observed when high powder factors are used, suggesting improvements in grinding.

"EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer’s pellet silica requirements. In addition, the mine plan was moving towards a lower grade ore and funding was not available for plant improvements to compensate for the change in ore or improving quality. Small changes to optimize various processing equipment resulted in significant improvements in both quality and productivity; for example, productivity on one mill line increased by 10% while producing lower silica concentrate. This paper will provide the methodology that allowed EVTAC to improve quality and productivity through process optimization with little capital investment.INTRODUCTION EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer pellet silica requirements. In addition, the short-term mine plan was changing to a lower ore grade. Because of limited funds, EVTAC did not have the capital for investing in the plant to compensate for the ore change or to make improvements to lower product silica levels. Small changes to optimize process equipment resulted in significant improvements in quality and productivity; for example, one mill line feed rates increased by 10% while also producing a higher quality concentrate. These changes were sufficient enough to allow the mine to lower the target ore grade beyond their initial goal. At one time, a $3M flotation facility was considered as a way to meet quality with the new ore grade. However, the process changes were able to accomplish the same silica reduction with roughly a $50,000 investment in VFDs for sump controls. This paper will discuss some of the modifications that allowed EVTAC to meet the quality and production objectives with little capital investment. It also discusses the methodology used to make these process improvements."

Introduction Stamp-Milling and amalgamation is, perhaps, one of the oldest processes of recovering gold from its ores. Many papers, theses, and textbooks have been written on the subject of stamp-milling practice in general, but, to my knowledge, there have been no publications describing the modern stamp-mill as designed, developed, and operated in Nova Scotia. Although it may be said that the gravity stamp-mill is the most primitive, and perhaps the crudest, crushing machine in existence, it is at the same time the most satisfactory all-round milling and amalgamating device yet contrived. Originating in Saxony, and used in North America first in Virginia and Georgia, the stamp-mill, in a primitive form, later found its way to California and Colorado. Here, it speedily developed from an affair of wood shod with iron, and operated with the crudest gearing, to substantially its present form. Briefly, it consists (see Figure 1) essentially of a series of hammers (the stamps), which fall upon a mixture of ore and water contained in a cast-iron box (the mortar). The resulting crushed ore (the pulp) is splashed out through a screen on the front of the box. For some years after the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia, in 1861, the ? arrastra and Chilean mill were used to recover the gold from the rich ores. The stamp-mill followed, and various types were used, principally the California and Gilpin County types. Then, in 1895, Mr. M. R. O'Shaughnessy, one of our foremost amalgamators, conceived the idea of a new type of stampmill, which has since become standard in Nova Scotia gold mines. This mill, unique in its design and operation, is specially adapted for the most efficient extraction and recovery of gold as it occurs in our Nova Scotian ores. It is commonly known as the Underwater Feed type, as opposed to the usual Overwater or Top Feed type, and it may be rightly termed The Nova Scotia Self-Classifying Stamp Amalgamation Mill. It is conceded by experienced mill-men that it is superior to any other type of mill for recovering the very coarse and granular gold typical of the ores of this Province. The particular installation and practice to be described in this paper is that of the Guysborough Mines, Limited, at Goldenville, Guysborough county. Emphasis will be laid on certain operating innovations of extreme simplicity and high efficiency.

Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

"The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill’s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “circuit classification system efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and ultimately the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b, and McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the percentage of “coarse” (typically with reference to the plus P80) size material occupying the mill (versus “fines” or product size material, finer than the circuit P80), and can be calculated by taking the average of the percentage of coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, which is derived as follows.We define “fines” as any product size material, and “coarse” as that targeted to be further ground, the two typically differentiated by the circuit target P80. For any grinding circuit, the production rate of new, product size material (fines) must equal the specific grinding rate of the coarse material (i.e. fine product generated per unit of energy applied to the coarse material) times the power applied to the coarse material."

"The Niobec concentrator rejects up to /5% of the Nb as slimes (-10u.m). The recovery of Nb from these slimes by column flotation is being studied. An essential condition for selective flotation is slimes dispersion. A particle size analyzer, the Sedigraph 5000D, was used to monitor dispersion in plant waters with combinations of organic and inorganic dispersants and flotation reagents. Flotation reagents were particularly detrimental to dispersion with sodium silicate. The best dispersion conditions were selected for column flotation tests. These tests revealed that reagent combination had a pronounced effect on froth stability. Careful frother selection achieved good froth stability under conditions of good dispersion. Plant water increased the required dispersant concentration causing mineral depression.IntroductionSlimes (-10 u.m) rejected at Niobec contain up to 15070 of the over-all Nb content . Recovery of Nb from these slimes would significantly increase over-all recovery. A suggested recovery route involves two phases: (1) carbonate flotation (to remove most of the carbonates) depressing silicates and pyrochlore (as currently done at Niobec); and (2) selective (direct) pyrochlore flotation from the silicates. Phase 2 has been addressed and several routes to achieve selective flotation are available. Phase I was attempted with the selective reagent scheme used at Niobec but a considerable amount of pyrochlore floated with the carbonates due to poor slimes dispersion."

Tailings from the nickel refinery in Copper Cliff, Ontario, consist of fine silicates mixed with a variable amount of conductive and magnetic minerals mainly associated with sulphides and iron oxides. Subsequent oxidation of sulphide- rich phases within the tailings results in the formation of an acidic leachate that may contain significant concentrations of trace metals. Mapping the spatial distribution of regions of higher sulphide concentration therefore provides insight into the distribution of the acidgenerating potential within the tailings. Electrical conductivity is constrained by two parameters — the concentration of metallic sulphides and the ionic concentration of acid in groundwater. Magnetic susceptibility is directly related to the pyrrhotite and magnetite content. It is proposed that combining information derived from airborne electromagnetic and magnetic surveys can provide an indication of metallic sulphide distribution. Preliminary investigations of airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data acquired concurrently over the sulphide-rich Copper Cliff tailings site reveal that these parameters can provide information on mine tailing extent and permit separation of tailings with varying compositional and alteration levels. Airborne geophysical data provide information about the subsurface while a digital elevation model (DEM) and hyperspectral imagery record surface conditions. Integration of the two data sets can reduce ambiguity when interpreting mine tailing distributions and their subsequent alterations.

The construction, commissioning and operation of a continuous pilot-scale selective agglomeration (oil agglomeration) unit are described. This plant has been used to recover fine coal from an effluent stream that is produced by a jig plant which scalps the coal from a New South Wales (Australia) colliery. The reject slurry is extremely fine (66.5% minus 53 um) and has an ash content of approximately 40%. The pilot plant can treat up to 0.3 tonne/h of this slurry, producing average product ashes as low as 9.1% and tailings ashes greater than 80%. The average yield observed was62%, which corresponded to a recovery of coal material of 88%. The operation of this pilot plant yielded data that enabled an economic assessment of this type of processing to be carried out. This study showed that selective agglomeration is an economically viable process for eliminating the substantial losses of coal to tailings ponds and minimizing consequent disposal and environmental problems. A commercial plant has been constructed and commissioned on the basis of the data obtained from this pilot-scale operation.

"SKSTM oxygen bottom blowing smelting technology was developed by SKS-ENFI at SKS Smelter, Hunan in the 1990s to replace the conventional sintering process and thus to meet the high national EHS standard for lead.Since then, two major milestones have been achieved:1. Since 2002, the SKS oxygen bottom blowing smelting-blast furnace reduction has been in operation at SKS, YGL, Chizhou smelter etc. Now in China, about 50% of the lead (4.2 millions t/year) is produced using SKS process; and2. Since 2008, the blast furnace has been replaced by direct reduction of molten rich lead slag at YGJ smelter, which is more energy-efficient since no slag cooling is required. This two stage process (SKS Oxidation- Direct Reduction) is named as the YGL process.Since 2008, numerous technological innovations have been implemented in the furnace design, process control, and maintenance at YGL. The plant has been successfully demonstrated its unique excellent performances on all aspects from processing capacity, product quality, energy reduction, cost reduction and emission reduction. The purpose of this report is to update all the improvements with proven tracks.Meanwhile, a preliminary comparison on the following aspects between the YGL process and other similar technologies has been discussed:1. Plant design and operating conditions;2. Mass and heat balances, metal (Pb, Ag) recovery;3. Consumables, oxygen gun and refractory lining life;4. Energy consumption and operating costs;5. Sulfur capture and emission reduction etc.It is concluded that the modified SKSTM process is a clean SO2-free emission process. The process is characteristic of other features such as no extra fuel addition, low capital with a small foot-print design, low OPEX, high throughput, easy operation, long refractory lining life and high productivity (95%+ on line time annually). It offers an alternative cost-effective technology for lead smelting industry."

Abstract -The Halfmile Lake stratiform volcanogenic massive-sulfide deposit consists of pyrrhotite­ rich breccia-matrix sulfides and pyrite-pyrrhotite-rich layered sulfides that form a laterally continuous sheet stratigraphically underlain by an extensive pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-quartz stringer zone. Mineralization is hosted by a sequence of felsic pyroclastics and volcanic-derived, fine-grained metasediments. The proportion of volcanic to sedimentary rocks indicates increasing vent proximity from southwest to northeast across the deposit area. Fine- to medium-grained felsic pyroclastics and roughly equal amounts of fine-grained metasediments comprise the stratigraphic footwall to the mineralization. Quartz-feldspar porphyritic bodies cut this sequence and may have provided the heat source for exhalite activity. Felsic tuffs, locally crystal-rich, and lesser amounts of metasedimentary rocks make up the immediate stratigraphie hanging wall. This sequence is stratigraphically overlain and locally interfmgered with matie volcanics that contain substantial proportions of felsic fragments. Deposition of sulfides post-dated the beginning of felsic volcanism, which places the deposit in the middle of the Lower Tetagouche Group. Compositions of the volcanic rocks range from basait to rhyolite and exhibit sub-alkaline affinities. Strongly overprinted whole-rock, trace-element, and REE geochemical signatures resulting from mineralizing hydrothermal activity confirm the genetic relationship be­tween the stringer zone and the mineralized sheet. Large-scale D1 folding has overturned the entire sequence. D1 thrust faults and related sheath-like folds have profoundly affected sulfide distribution. D2 is manifested by a penetrative S2 foliation, and D3 is represented by large-scale open folds.

"The unconformity beneath 75 per cent or over 6000 km2 of the Athabasca Basin in Alberta lies within economically exploitable depths. The basement beneath this unconformity consists of an extension of the Wylie Lake Pluton, locally faulted and containing areas of mylonitic rocks. While the rocks of the Wylie Lake Pluton are not promising host rocks for uranium ore deposits, the areas of mylonites, graphitic rocks and possible remnants of granitegneiss would bear closer examination. One area of maficmylonites shows a weathering zone enriched in Si, Ca, Na, Pb, Ni, Ba, Co, Sr, Zn and U in addition to reported values of 0.08 oz/ton gold. This zone occurs beneath 800 m to 900 m of Athabasca Group sediments, but similar rock types are present beneath much thinner cover elsewhere. Detailed geophysical exploration is required over the area of thinner Athabasca Group rocks to define more precisely the areas of promising basement rock type.IntroductionThe Athabasca Basin in Alberta has considerable economic potential which has not yet been realized. The geological setting is closely analogous to parts of the basin in Saskatchewan which host major uranium deposits. Recent advances in geophysical techniques have led to deposits being located in Saskatchewan below 600 m of cover. This means that the unconformity between the Athabasca Group and the basement lies at exploitable depths over 6000 km2 or 75 per cent of the Alberta portion of the basin. Much of this area was only cursorily examined almost a decade ago. In addition, Alberta's new Metallic Mineral Regulations have clarified the regulatory situation in the area, and opened up much land for exploration. This article is based on Wilson's (1985a) study of the Athabasca Group and Wilson's (1986) work on the basement and alteration beneath the Athabasca Group in Alberta."

"The Isle aux Morts Prospect is the first polymetallic, sulphide mineralization reported from the Port aux Basques Complex of southwest Newfoundland. Zn-Pb-Cu-Ba-Ag mineralization hosted by quartz-muscovite semipelite, occurs at the contact between a quartz of eldspathic unit and pelitic unit with intercalated amphibolite are minerals comprise sphalerite-galenachalcopyrite, in order of decreasing abundance. The principal gangue minerals are quartz, muscovite, feldspar and barite. Three morphologic types of mineralization are present: massive with more than 50% sulphide, flanked on one or both sides by disseminated and/or banded types. The massive type of mineralization exhibits a :durchbewegung"" fabric of rounded silicate fragments in a sulphide matrix, characteristic of intensely deformed and metamorphosed sulphide bodies. Sulphide minerals have been mobilized and recrystallized and share the same metamorphic and deformational history as the host rocks. Quartz muscovite schist which hosts disseminated mineralization, displays a K2O enrichment and Na2O depletion, that is typical of alteration associated with sulphide bodies in volcano sedimentary sequences. Isotopic ratios of sulphur are comparable to those of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits.Despite penetrative deformation and metamorphic recrystallization, features of the local geology and the mineralization suggest that the Isle aux Morts Prospect is volcanogenic in origin. IntroductionFollowing the release of a government lake sediment survey (Butler and Davenport, 1980), which indicated anomalous concentrations of metals in southwest Newfoundland, geologists with Utah Mines Ltd. discovered the Isle aux Morts Prospect, a Zn-Pb-Cu-Ba-Ag showing, located approximately 15 km northeast of Port aux Basques (Figs. I and 2). The mineralization occurs in quartz-muscovite schist and is the first significant basemetal discovery in the Port aux Basques Complex."
