"The competitive pressure, the increasing energy costs and the environmental regulations impose substantial challenges to the definition of power plants serving industrial facilities. Primary mining and metallurgical facilities have even greater challenges because they are often located remotely, where the fuel supply can be a problem. The absence of a power grid imposes challenges on the reliability and quality of the electrical energy supply. In addition, the facilities usually require thermal energy too, not only electricity.This paper outlines these types of issues that have to be considered when defining a cogeneration plant integrated with a remotely located industrial facility. It is addressed to the “users” of cogeneration facilities rather than to “generators.” The focus is on analyzing various site-specific design considerations to prescreen the feasible cogeneration alternatives and minimize the number of options to be analyzed from the economics viewpoint. This approach could substantially reduce the engineering effort and schedule during the feasibility phase of the project.The front-end of the paper provides a basic understanding of cogeneration plants of various types to establish a common language. Subsequently, the paper outlines and analyzes specific issues that could be of help in the definition of cogeneration installations for remotely located industrial facilities, with a focus on mining and primary metallurgical plants"

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian mining industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage phenomenon. AMD occurs when sulphide minerals (e.g., pyrite) contained in rock are exposed to air and water and subsequently oxidize to produce low pH water. This acid effluent has the potential to mobilize any heavy metals contained in the rock. Coating the sulphide minerals with silicates is a new promising technology to reduce AMD. Pyrite is treated with a solution containing H2O2, sodium silicate and a buffering agent. H2O2 oxidizes a small part of pyrite producing ferric iron (Fe3+) ions. These ions subsequently react with the silicate ions to produce ferric hydroxide-silica that precipitates on the pyrite surface producing a passive coating. This silicate coating can protect the grains of pyrite from oxidation. This paper presents a series of experiments that confirm that silicate coating can considerably reduce AMD.

"The principles involved in the use and application of mathematical models as an aid to the development of advanced process control computer systems are described briefly. This is followed by a brief survey of known models of this kind for the simulation of mining industry processes.The main part of the paper describes a dynamic model of the flotation process developed by Canadian General Electric. Using flotation rate constants for each species of mineral and gangue, the model provides a numerical solution of the differential equations describing cell behaviour. The cell mode] is used repeatedly as a subroutine in the •over-all-plant model. The features of the cell and plant models are described.Simulation runs from the plant model show stream .assays and other indications of plant behaviour printed typically in 1-to 10-minute steps for several hours of •Operation following typical disturbances such as changes in feed rate or reagent addition rate. "The CompanyCardinal River Coals is jointly owned by Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidated Coal Company of Canada (Consol). The Luscar mine is operated by Luscar Ltd. and is located 40 km south of Hinton near Cadomin, Alberta (Fig. 1). The plant sits on the old townsite of Luscar, Alberta, which was founded in order to develop the coal in 1912 (Fig. 2). Initially, the coal was mined by Luscar Ltd. for heating and steam generation and used quite heavily by the railways for their steam locomotives. In 1955, the mine was decommissioned as the demand for coal for tl1ese purposes had dropped off. In 1969, the mine was re-established by Cardinal River to provide metallurgical coking coal for its customers in Japan. The coal is mined from the 13m thick Jewel Seam by open pit methods at a 10 to 1 stripping ratio. The run-of-mine coal is then cleaned to meet customer demands.The PlantThe clean coal preparation facilities at Cardinal River were extended in 1980 in order to increase the feed rate from 450 t/h to 800 t/h. The extension is a separate plant which can be operated on its own or in parallel with the old plant. In addition, modifications have been made to the fine coal circuit (hydrocyclones added), the coarse refuse circuit, (refuse bucks replaced by a refuse conveyor which backfills a pit), and the fine refuse circuit (solid bowl refuse centrifuges, refuse classifying cyclones, and hydra-rake thickener no longer utilized) since the plant was built in 1969. The plant production of 3 M t per year with a yield of 78% is achieved by first screening and breaking the run-of-mine material to a top size of 1 ½ in. The feed is then slurried, sized, and processed in three different washing circuits. The washed coal is mechanically dewatered, thermally dried, and then stored in a 14 500 t capacity silo or on a 300 000 t stockpile. The fine refuse is thickened and pumped to the same pit to which the coarse refuse is being conveyed"

NEW sources of supply of tungsten concentrates became necessary when the flow from the Far East was blocked in 1942. In Canada, one source has been noted in the workings of the Hollinger mine at Timmins, Ontario. For many years, a small amount of scheelite had been removed with the gold ore, and an appreciable tonnage of scheelite still remained in the mine. At the request of the Dominion Government, a plant was built to recover this scheelite in the form of a concentrate that could be used by the alloy-steel industry without further preparation. The plant began operating early in March, 1942, and a small tonnage of ore, carrying scheelite and gold values, has been treated daily since then. The possibility of recovering the scheelite had been considered on several previous occasions. Each time the proposal had been given up because the total profits from the enterprise were estimated to be insufficient to repay the capital cost of building the recovery plant. At the time the plant was built, additional information had been gathered about the tonnage and grade of the scheelite ore in the mine, and several thousand tons of ore grading higher than 0. 25 per cent WO3 (tungstic trioxide) were known to be available.

Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards more underground mechanized mining methods and the number of LHD vehicles utilised has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and the mining companies. However, due to the design of the LHD vehicle and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility are inevitable. The inability of the equipment operator to see clearly (i.e. people, objects or hazards) around the machine has contributed to a number of accidents including fatal injuries. In order to identify vehicle design characteristics resulting in restricted and blocked sightlines, visibility assessments for existing machines are traditionally completed in the field using a light filament technique. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around the equipment and to produce a 2D chart of this information. The 2D shadow diagrams have proved to be useful in highlighting potential equipment problems and have been performed repeatedly to show the potential of redesigning a part of the LHD for improving visibility. The light filament method involves manually collecting data and requires a level of judgment to be used. As a result the method is susceptible to errors and requires around three hours to complete. The objective of the current research is twofold; firstly to develop a rapid method for field visibility data collection using a laser scanner and secondly to compare results of repeat tests for both light filament and laser scanning methods. A MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with Pointscape and 3Dipsos software has been used to collect visibility information and process the data. The research aims to develop the laser scanner as a technique to rapidly evaluate the visibility profile of an LHD vehicle. Machine design changes can then be assessed quickly using these results.

A working group from Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata reviewed supply and demand for graduates from mining education departments in countries where they normally recruit: Australia, Canada, Chile, Western Europe, South Africa and USA. Departments are typically small and increasingly unsustainable, resulting in a steady rate of closure. Supply and demand for graduates in the minerals industry is cyclical, with supply lagging behind demand and trending downwards. Currently, supply is tight and the industry is trying to expand with an ageing workforce. Greater collaboration between universities and within the industry is recommended to address these issues.

"Terrestrial photogrammetry has been used for many years to build three-dimensional pictures for analytical purposes. Photographs can include images from open pit mine walls, ground topography, mine buildings infrastructure or accident scenes. Analysis and co-ordinate estimation in early photogrammetric systems demanded the use of specialized and costly optical-mechanical stereocomparators. Few of these instruments could be interfaced with computers to provide databases, and all required trained personnel with good perspective vision to collect data.Digital photogrammetric software has replaced these older systems, and the digital video plotter (DVP) is a simple computerized system utilizing readily available PCs to quickly produce a stereoscopic model of any scene where an area of overlap exists in photographs taken from two different locations. Specialized cameras providing reference marks or grids on the photographs are still necessary for detailed analysis in three dimensions.This paper describes the application of DVP to the three-dimensional analysis of strike, dip and location of dominant fracture planes visible on an open pit wall slope, and the intersection of planar features which might reduce wall stability. Where reference survey points cannot be provided because access by personnel to the photographic scene is impossible for safety reasons, normal case terrestrial photogrammetry can provide the necessary control points for more complex aerial photogrammetry geometries.DVP recreates the geometry existing at the moment photographs are taken, providing the user with the ability to safely recreate, compare and analyze the structures determining the stability of open pit wall slopes."

"This paper will describe the methods and the results of studies to integrate polymetallic nodule extractive metallurgy methods into existing and operating technologies or plants with the aim of reducing the capital cost of deep-sea mining challenges and to streamline the supply chain of raw materials where such opportunities exist (Moa Bay and others). It will also assess the possibility to carry out pre-industrial processing operations with productivity corresponding to pilot mining operation in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (5–10% of assumed annual production) with the use of existing facilities. The present study shows the results of high pressure acid leaching of polymetallic nodules (PN) mixed with laterite non-commercial ore. It also presents PN processing in the presence of ammoniacal tailings obtained from the Caron process. The experiments were carried out according to 24 full factorial design. The regression equations were determined for extractions of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. The obtained results show that increasing temperature, the acid/ mineral ratio and the leaching time have a positive and significant effect on extraction of all the studied metals. However, increasing the tailings addition favors the extraction of the Co, Zn and Mn. The extraction of Fe diminishes, while the extraction of Ni is not affected. In the following conditions; 180 min, 260°C, 0.5 kg acid /kg minerals and 2.5 kg PN/kg tailing; the following extractions were achieved; 96% Ni, 90% Co, 97% Cu, 99.9% Zn, 43% Mn and 26% Fe."

The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned. Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis. Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers.

Les parcs à résidus miniers représentent un risque environnemental qui nécessite une gestion adéquate. Suite à la publication du « Guide sur la gestion des parcs à résidus miniers » en septembre 1998, les membres de l?industrie minière ont appliqué les éléments de gestion du Guide, permettant ainsi une amélioration continue des opérations. En février 2000, l?industrie minière a indiqué le besoin d?établir des lignes directives plus spécifiques pour l?opération sécuritaire des parcs à résidus. Dans cette optique, l?Association Minière Canadienne a publié, en septembre 2002, un Guide pour l?exploitation, l?entretien et la surveillance (EES) des parcs à résidus miniers. Suite au développement du Guide et à son application sur plusieurs sites miniers, il apparaît que la mise en oeuvre d?un Manuel ESS des parcs à résidus miniers permet : ? d?établir les responsabilités des intervenants; ? de s?assurer que les critères d?opération sont appliqués; ? de mettre en oeuvre le plan de déposition des résidus et de gestion de l?eau; ? de rencontrer les normes et exigences environnementales; ? de définir un programme d?entretien et de surveillance des ouvrages; ? d?identifier les risques et de mettre en oeuvre un plan d?intervention d?urgence; de démontrer une opération diligente.

"An unparalleled growth in the Canadian coal industry in 1970 coincided with increasing awareness by Canadians of their environment and their geography with its accompanying transportation factors. R and D on coal moved with greater emphasis toward solving problems in these areas as well as continuing with strong interest in coal preparation, carbonization, combustion, ""weathering'', spontaneous ignition, storage, exploration and geology. Long-range ""basic"" research was not forgotten in that work continued on coal-based carbons, coal chemistry and agrobiological uses for coal. This paper reviews the status of these many areas of coal research at the beginning of the seventies and takes note of some of the more significant legislation and projects brought to the author's attention. No attempt is made to itemize or to describe in detail all the worthwhile projects, many of which are reported elsewhere."

With the demand for weight reduction in vehicles and airplanes, researchers have shown great interested in casting wrought aluminum alloy 7075 because of its potential advantages such as high strength-to-density ratio and stress-reduction capabilities. It is therefore essential to conduct a fundamental investigation on solidification behavior and grain microstructure of alloy 7075. In this study, a commercially-available wrought aluminum alloy 7075 was used to study the solidification behavior of alloy 7075. A thermal analysis was performed based on the cooling curve and its corresponding first and second derivative curves. The nucleation of the primary a-Al phase and eutectic phases were analyzed. The comparison between the microstructures of the wrought and cast 7075 alloys shows that coarse microstructure and porosity are present in the cast alloy. The techniques for grain refinement in casting, such as the addition of the nucleating particles and applied pressure, should be employed to reduce the dendrite arm spacing and the porosity.

The paper describes the processes developed and piloted by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for recovering copper, in the form of specification copper powders, from Lynn Lake sulphidic copper concentrates and Fort Saskatchewan Refinery by-product copper sulphides. The process includes ammonia pressure leaching and hydrogen reduction from solution. Nickel and cobalt present in the con-centrates dissolve in the leach solution and a method was developed for separating these metals from the cop-per. Methods are described for con-trolling the physical properties of the copper powder produced in the reduction vessel. The chemistry of the process is briefly discussed and the effects of some of the more important process variables are described. "Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du faciès ""F"" de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Formation de Horn River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bitume solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organo­ clastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renferment que de l'illite et des interstratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéïsation (Th = l00°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées à la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflec­ tance de la collinite (84°C à ll7°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie ther­ mique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gîtes. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion : aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract- The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the biturninous unit at the base of the Horn River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th(l00°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectanœ (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

"Increasing energy costs in mineral processing is making it necessary for tighter controls over various parts of the concentrating process. Continuous monitoring and control of critical process streams can be easily performed by today's many computer systems. Indeed, the list of successful applications of computers to grinding and flotation control continues to grow. The day is rapidly approaching when the use of computers within concentrators for either process control or simply metallurgical accounting will no longer be a luxury, but a necessity. The benefits from such applications far out weight the initial investment.This paper describes the current application of a process control system at Brunswick Mining in north-eastern New Brunswick. Emphasis is placed on the control of a CuPb flotation circuit, and the benefits derived-from this control.No. 12 Cu-Pb Flotation: The complex nature of the Brunswick flotation process has been described else-where. 1,2,3 Four final concentrates are eventually produced, these being a Zn concentrate assaying 53% Zn, a 30% Pb concentrate, a 20% Cu concentrate, and a bulk Pb Zn concentrate assaying 35% Zn and 17% Pb. The Cu concentate, Pb concentrate, and bulk Pb Zn concentrate are all derived from a primary CuPb concentrate assaying 26% Pb, 11% Zn and 1.8% Cu.The No. 12 CuPb circuit produces approximately two thirds of the total primary CuPb concentrate. No. 12 ore, assaying 3.5% Pb, 9% Zn, 0.25% Cu and 100 g/tne silver, is ground in two parallel grinding circuits. Each line uses a 3.2 x 4.2 meter rod mill in closed circuit with two parallel 3.2 x 3.9 meter ball mills. Ball mill and rod mill discharges are classified in two stages of cycloning. The secondary cyclone overflow, or flotation feed, is controlled at 65% passing 37 microns."

Forecasts prepared by the B.C. Research Council for the National Harbours Board suggest that mineral shipments through B.C. Lower Mainland port facilities will increase more than four-fold, from 6 to about 25 million tons, during the decade 1965 to 1975. The longer term outlook is for a six-fold increase to about 35 million tons by 1985. In 1967, minerais accounted for more than one-third of the total deep-sea traffic tonnage, nearly as much as grain. By 1975, the minerals' share will be about half the total. The principal items are exports of potash from Saskatchewan, and of coal and sulphur from Alberta and British Columbia. Additional exports include copper and other mineral concentrates and propane. Imports are chiefly salt and phosphate rock. Coastal traffic in such items as cement, sand and grave!, and limestone totalled 3.3 mil-lion tons in 1967. They will continue to be of major importance, but do not have the spectacular growth potential of the deep-sea traffic.

Over the last few years, interest in the development and construction of large diameter, high pressure pipelines from the Mackenzie Delta in northern Canada and Alaska's North Slope has steadily increased as a result of the projected decline in recoverable natural gas from existing reserves in western Canada. The success of such enormous pipeline projects, which will require utilization of a strain-based design approach, is largely based on successful application of high strength line pipe steels, such as X80 and X100. To fully realize the economic benefits of high strength steels, welding processes and procedures must be developed to ensure that the requirements for high strength and good low temperature toughness are confidently obtainable in field girth welds used in the construction of such pipelines. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the factors that control weld metal strength and toughness for a series of mechanized X100 girth welds produced using a range of narrow-gap gas-metal arc welding procedures. The attainment of high yield strength (> 810 MPa) is considered to be an important target to ensure overmatching strength relative to the longitudinal property distribution of X100 line pipe steel. Some factors that have been considered in this evaluation include influences of gas-metal arc welding process variants (single and multi-wire) and changes in welding procedure specifications, including joint preparation. Key components of this work relate to the reliable measurement of weld metal strength variation through-thickness and as a function of position around the circumference of a given girth weld.
