It should be stating the æbleeding obviousÆ to say that the most efficient method of recovery must be used during the testing and evaluation phases of an orebody. Furthermore, the company will be literally throwing away money by not using the most efficient recovery plant during mining. This is especially true in the case of a low concentration/high value commodity such as diamonds. Unfortunately, this economic recovery criterion is not always the driving force. Some inexperienced companies think that they can preserve capital by using cheaper, and generally less efficient, recovery plants to mine their product. This philosophy is invariably a fallacy. Furthermore, it is also important to use the correct sized plant for the proposed task. It is no use trying to use a small testing plant to treat large quantities of ore, as this may result in loss of recovery efficiency. The converse is equally true.

How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

A relational database in which its complex contents can be navigated through a map interface (ie spatially enabling) is relatively a new concept yet attractive for geoscience fields. This concept is made possible using the new breed of geographic information system (GIS) that utilises component object model and relational database management system. Such sophisticated yet open and highly interoperable platform makes possible the integration of data management, analysis, and modeling processes into single workflow. Taking benefit of this technology trend, several initiatives emerge in geoscience to establish digital data models, such as the petroleum industry, the North America digital geologic map data model, and the ESRI geology data model. The mining industry unfortunately has not followed same paths due to the lack of data model and standards in its history. This paper presents an effort on establishing a digital data model for mining-related geoscience databases. The aim is to promote several standards by proposing a preliminary data model and demonstrating that the model is working for the mining business datasets. The case study is the island of Java, the western part of the Sunda island arc of Indonesia. Many types of datasets, such as geologic maps, topography, mineral deposits, structures, geochemical and geophysical data were dealt with and were transformed relational geologic databases of Java using the new Geodatabase geographic data model. Intelligent GIS tools were investigated for geologic applications, ranging from generic to specific purposes. Subtypes and domain were used to set up constraints, while topology rules and relationship classes were used to create links among data layers. The linear referencing system was used to model drillhole data. The current results show that the generic GIS and relational database can handle typical tasks related with mining business datasets. A preliminary data model is finally suggested.

The rationale for the design of the Emergency Egress (escape andentrapment) strategy for one underground metal mine has beenpreviously described (Brake, 1999). Two of the key conclusionsfor this mine, which is equipped with 30 minute oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR), were the need to ensure no person is ever more than 750 m from an emergency refuge station (ERS) and that it could take up to eight hours to rescue workers from undergroundå. These conclusions were based on a number of considerations including the non-availability of a credible, æpersonalÆ entrapment procedure at the workplace, the duration of self-contained self-rescuers when used for travel, the need for rapid æclearingÆ of mine personnel to effectively and safely target mine search and rescue resources and the maximum time to either put a fire out, or to rescue affected personnel. As there is no Australian standard for refuge stationsç (or for self-rescuers), this paper follows with guidelines for the location and specification of both fixed (permanent) and relocatable Emergency Refuge Stations (ERSs) that may be applicable to other underground Australian metal mines.

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

The extraction of drawbells in Lift #2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody was achieved by single shot blasting, enabled through the use of electronic detonators. This paper discusses the designs considered at the time of the feasibility study and the various changes made to these designs prior to and during the construction phase of the Lift #2 block cave. Operational issues encountered are highlighted, as are ways in which these were overcome. The amount of personnel utilised to mine the drawbells is also covered. Lists of design and operational considerations to be used for drawbell extractions have been included.

Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in analytical and experimental techniques, thermodynamic theory, and computational capabilities in high temperature research which are particularly timely to address the challenges of increasingly complex and variable feedstocks in both primary and secondary pyrometallurgical processes, the need to optimise and improve them. Currently a research program is in progress on the development of the 20-component multi-phase thermodynamic database for pyrometallurgical smelting, refining and recycling systems describing thermodynamics and phase equilibria of molten slag, matte, speiss, salts, alloys and associated solids. The integrated experimental and modelling program has been supported for nearly two decades by several consortia of 14 major international companies with over 30 operations around the world, integrates many components, incorporates many in-house developments, and brings together many different groups of professionals of different levels from junior and mid-career to senior from both industry and university sectors. The aims of the paper are:  to outline the many components and issues of the overall program including analytical, experimental and thermodynamic modelling research as well as implementation of the results in industrial practice, professional education, planning and organisation issues.  to highlight the opportunities, challenges, and possible solutions.  to present these to all different groups of professionals involved in the current program.  and thus, importantly, to facilitate possible future further developments and collaborations in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics of complex high-temperature systems.

Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

Installing ground support correctly is not an easy task, whether lack of operator training, poor ground conditions or underperforming equipment. Confirming the quality of installation can help with planning and remedial works and help to maintain a safe working environment. A 2?m bolt with 700?mm of encapsulation will pass a 10?t pull test (assuming ground conditions permit); however, it will not provide any data of the unencapsulated length and thus the ability to withstand corrosion. Complimentary testing in the form of non-destructive testing (NDT) can provide factual data that leads to the assessment of the quality of the encapsulation. By improving the quality of the encapsulation, the risk of corrosion is reduced, the ground support durability is improved and hence the asset life is enhanced.This paper presents a case study of a trial using the NDT system RokTel™. Installations of varying quality were installed and tested. The characteristics tested were corrosion, load and free length. These characteristics can be tested and assessed for cable bolts, thread bar bolts and split sets. The aim of this paper is to present NDT testing as a viable method for assessing installation quality and ongoing performance of the ground support.CITATION:Jones, B and Chappell, M, 2014. Olympic Dam is the eighth largest Cu deposit and the largest U deposit in the world, with approximately 35 million tonnes of contained Cu and 1.2 million tonnes of U. The most recent resource estimate was for 2.95 billion tonnes of mineralised material with average grades of 1.2 per cent Cu, 0.4 kg/t U, 0.5 g/t Au, 2.6 g/t Ag as contained mineral resources. Olympic Dam is expected to produce >200 000 tonnes of Cu and 4200 tonnes of U3O8 from 9.8 million tonnes of ore in 2004, making it the 12th largest Cu producer in the world. One of the impediments to achieving targeted rates of production has been oversize material (>0.9 m) reporting to stope draw points. A major contributor to oversize material may be overbreak along pre-existing structural weaknesses from stope walls and backs during the production life of a stope. Underbreaking to structures can also have a detrimental effect on the performance of a stope. In an effort to understand the influence of structural geology on stope performance, WMC Resources and SRK Consulting partnered during 2003 to refine the current system of structural mapping, and to use historical data to produce a structural interpretation covering a large part of the mining area. The interpretation has been wireframed in DATAMINETM into a three-dimensional structural framework model. To date, there are more than 600 structures of >50 m strike length incorporated into the structural framework model, which covers a study area 1500 m + 600 m + 350 m. A back-analysis exercise to assess the influence of interpreted structures on overbreak and underbreak was completed for laser-surveyed stopes.

At the Century mine in North West Queensland, MMG produces lead and zinc concentrates. The current production rate is close to 500 000 t of zinc per annum. Graphite is the main gangue in the orebody and a substantial quantity of chemicals are used to achieve an acceptable depression of graphite and other gangue materials in the current operation. In the future, it is anticipated that the content of graphite in the orebody will increase while the zinc grade will gradually drop. This scenario illustrates the importance of an optimised suite of flotation chemicals to maximise concentrate grade and recovery. As an alternative to the current reagent suite where dextrin is used to depress graphite, laboratory test work and subsequent plant trials were conducted with alternative depressants. These depressants facilitated both graphite depression and elevated zinc grades in the rougher concentrate. As an added benefit, it was also observed that the silica content in the zinc concentrate was reduced in the presence of the biopolymer selected for the plant trials. Results from both laboratory tests and plant trials will be discussed to illustrate how this change of reagent suite improved flotation yield at the MMG Century Mine.CITATION:Wynn, R, Lauten, R A, Liang, H and Stoitis, N, 2014. Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.

Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

The use of geological data for optimisation of operating plants has become a significant part of the modern process mindset. The underlying principle is to convert spatial geological data into metallurgical information to drive production and mine planning, blast design, blending strategies and plant set-up. Increasingly the process designer is required to interface with geological and mining staff to propose the best investment strategy for a project’s benefit.The geometallurgical model development for the Zafranal copper-gold project commenced in March, 2010, several months after the start of a major drilling campaign by AQM Copper Inc. The initial evaluation stage required review of historical Teck RC data to determine areas of metallurgical interest within the project. As drilling transitioned from RC to diamond drilling, core that was considered representative of the resource was selected and subjected to MLA mineralogy analysis. When coupled with sequential copper analyses this allowed calibration of an assay derived mineralogy model, allowing process concept options and a preliminary test program to be developed. This Phase 1 test program provided a preliminary process design, operating costs and anticipated concentrate grades and recoveries. Both this data and resource estimation were used to generate a preliminary Whittle pit optimisation based on maximising net smelter return, which in turn fed into a preliminary mine plan. The preliminary mine plan, in conjunction with geological logs and core results was used to develop a phase 2 metallurgical test program, where variability tests were conducted throughout the resource and composites formed to investigate specific years of the mine plan in locked cycle flotation. In addition comminution tests were modelled against geometallurgical domains allowing comminution components values to be calculated for 36?000 m of core. A flotation geometallurgical model was developed and incorporated into the resource model allowing concentrate grades and recoveries to be estimated on a block-by-block basis.

Draglines have been used exclusively for primary overburden stripping at the German Creek Mine complex in central Queensland, where coal has been extracted from a series of ten open cut pits working seams of the German Creek Coal Measures. Due to the dip of the seams, most of the pits have now reached the limit of current economic viability and the emphasis has switched to underground extraction using longwall methods and to a new area of open cut reserves in the nearby Rangal Coal Measures at German Creek East. This area is characterised by weak Tertiary overburden, relatively steep dips and low strength intraformational shear planes at the top and bottom of the coal.The first pit, with a maximum depth to coal of 15 m at the low wall, avoided any major slope failure through use of scrapers to excavate the boxcut and dump the spoil away from the low wall. However, this method was not considered economically viable for the second pit where low wall depths reached 44 m. Following geotechnical investigations the boxcut was divided into a number of zones depending on depth of cover, dip and thickness of Tertiary clay. Slope stability was assessed for each zone using several analytical techniques to ensure that dragline mining would be acceptable. Slope design parameters incorporating various stabilisation techniques, notably an updip trench backfilled with competent spoil to form a low wall buttress prior to excavation of the boxcut panel, were successfully integrated into the mine plan after careful consideration of the complex scheduling to minimise rehandle.
