Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

A reliable laboratory method to characterise the response of free gold particles when subjected to flash flotation conditions has been developed by AMIRA P420 researchers at Curtin University. This test has been applied to assess the flotation recovery of gravity recoverable gold from free milling ores as well as synthetic ores featuring either a gravity concentrate or gold powder. The Mining Innovation – State of Play was initiated three years ago by VCI in partnership with the University of Western Australia. The ambition was to create a ‘think tank’ type platform to support industry discussion on how it is performing in terms of innovation at a strategic level, what needs to change in the industry ‘ecosystem’, and how businesses may more effectively develop their strategy and architecture to innovate for competitive advantage.The drivers for this ambition were straightforward. The industry recognises itself as being conservative with respect to innovation and it knows the business and community endowment dividend from getting better at innovation is large; however, much of the material that seeks to provide insight on innovation tends to be drawn from industries that do not have the same high capital, long life cycle and market uncertainty characteristics as that faced by mining. Material that does focus on mining innovation is orientated towards technical innovation, not innovation strategy. There exists a significant knowledge gap, and filling it is valuable to both mining businesses and communities.The 2014 Mining Innovation State of Play report (Stanway, Griebel and Mahoney, 2014), based on a survey of over 230 mining executives, uncovered a range of insights but left several questions unresolved. The people with the best perspective on these questions are CEOs. They can see the business issues with sufficient clarity and have the influence to shape both the industry and its organisations, as seen in Figure 1. Discussing these questions with the view to progressing our collective understanding was the primary reason this interview series was conducted.Unsurprisingly, interviewing 15 CEOs and Chairpersons from different industries and commodities, across the globe resulted in a broad range of views. The discussions were frank and often blunt in assessing the short comings in the industry and suggestions for improvement. This degree of candour is hugely valuable as a basis for improvement. Gold-silver mineralised veins at Favona, represent a new low-sulfidation epithermal vein discovery that occurs less than 1 km southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The Favona vein is hosted in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs that are intensely altered to quartz, adularia, chlorite, illite or interstratified illite-smectite (with ten to 70 per cent smectite) and pyrite. Adularia is widespread and envelops the veins, whereas chlorite and illite are mostly restricted to the footwall, and illite-smectite is confined to the hanging wall of the Favona vein. At shallow levels, kaolinite, cristobalite and rare alunite overprint the above minerals. A polymict hydrothermal breccia also occurs above and in the hanging wall of the Favona vein and contains clasts of altered andesite and various quartz vein fragments. Fluid inclusions in quartz veins sampled over a 300 m vertical interval have a homogenisation temperature range of 175¦ to 266¦C and dilute apparent salinities of 220¦C and grading into illite-smectite and local smectite which formed at 2. In contrast, late kaolinite, cristobalite and alunite formed from descending steam-heated acid-sulfate waters. Overall, the Favona and Waihi deposits are interpreted to have formed at similar levels in a single low relief hydrothermal system, with each deposit representing a distinct zone of fluid upflow.

With the advent of the resources boom in the late 1960s most of the larger scale resources projects in Australasia were commissioned on an æowner miningÆ basis, where the mine owners owned and operated the primary mining equipment. Then, in the 1980s with the arrival of the gold mining boom in Western Australia and elsewhere, a change occurred û most of the mining activities were carried out on a contract mining basis. Over recent years, however, there has been a marked trend amongst larger Australasian open pit mining operations back towards owner-controlled and operated mining operations. The reasons for this are many and are addressed in the paper, but centre on the concept of the owner being prepared to assume more of the mining risk in exchange for the advantage of not having to pay a contractorÆs profit margin. Where mining contracts are entered into, the older æschedule of ratesÆ format is being replaced with less adversarial and more entrepreneurial contract alternatives involving operating cost and risk sharing in a spirit of æfair dealingÆ. Leasing and maintenance issues have also been influenced in recent years by the advent of more flexible contract arrangements with equipment suppliers. Group purchasing has also had some influence for project operators. For many mine owners, the optimal risk management profile involves a practical offsetting of the assumption of mining risk on the one hand, against the removal of litigation risk and potentially reduced operating costs on the other. Potential pitfalls may arise where equipment size and type requirements vary with time or where manpower management, mining flexibility, job skills or safety exposure factors are relevant. These issues are commented on in the context of some well known examples, and an update is provided on contract mining versus owner operation in large scale Australasian open pit mining generally.

Aberfoyle's Hellyer Division has filtered very fine flotation concentrates using two different makes of pressure filter. At the Luina concentrator a Larox pressure filter was used to treat a combined Pb + Zn or bulk concentrate. At the Hellyer concentrator two Lasta pressure filters are being used to filter copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Operating parameters and performance at both operations are described. In both concentrators it was found that correct cloth selection was critical and that cloth failures contributed significantly to downtime. Thorough preventative maintenance progammes were required to ensure adequate availability of both makes of filter.

Nuclear techniques have been used to determine the solids weight fraction (W) and ash content of (fine) coal in slurries independent of voidage variations. The method is based on the correlation between W and the hydrogen concentration Hsl (wt/wt) of the slurry. Hsl is determined by combining measurements of neutron moderation and ?-ray transmission. Both Wand ash content are determined by combining the above measurements with the ash-sensitive measurement of X-ray backscatter compensated by a measurement of iron K X-ray intensity.The nuclear analysis system, called the SIRO coal slurry gauge, has been proved in a six-week plant trial at the BHP Steelworks washery at Newcastle, NSW. Several probes, each containing a radioisotope source and scintillation detector, were immersed directly into the coal slurry in the feed box upstream from the bank of flotation cells. For 140 samples W, ash and voidage varied in the ranges of 0 to 13 wt percent, 26 to 41 wt per cent and 0 to 4 vol. per cent, respectively. The r.m.s. difference in solids weight fraction, determined by probe measurements and conventional assay, was 0·52 wt per cent. Ash was determined with an r.m.s. difference of 2·0 wt percent in the coal. Better sampling techniques were used in the last half of the plant trial, and r.m.s. differences were 0.35 wt per cent solids and 1·5 wt per cent ash.

The rapid expansion of gold production in Australia over the last five years can be attributed in part to the development of selective mining techniques for open pit gold operations. These techniques allow an increase in head grade with a substantial reduction in mill feed tonnage, as compared with traditional open pit designs. As a result, the capital requirements for mine development and mill construction are substantially reduced, improving the cash flow profile in the early years of operations. To put such a design into effect, the emphasis of mine production must be on producing gold, rather than tonnes of ore. Mine planning at Martha Hill has been based on such a philosophy. After the quantity and grade of the resource had been defined, the exploration programme was increasingly concerned with the local variability of ore zones, and with determining the position of values within broad ore-definition envelopes. The purpose of this work has been to allow the prediction of the tonnages and grades achievable from various levels of the pit when mining selectively using hydraulic excavators. The studies have so far indicated that the Martha Hill deposit can be mined selectively during the early years of production. The additional costs for detailed grade control and a reduced digging efficiency are more than compensated by the exclusion from the mill feed of much valueless material.

"This paper outlines a simple methodology for iron ore characterisation. Iron ores commonly contain a range of iron oxides with varying iron content along with generally minor quantities of lighter silicate gangue phases, giving rise to density variations. Companies tend to rely on heavy liquid separation (HLS) in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Heavy suspension separation (HSS), a simple laboratory technique of density fractionation, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide (WC) particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, can be used in the evaluation of iron ore.As part of Arrium Mining’s program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed and geometallurgical evaluation for the OBPs has become a major focus.Metallurgical evaluation of the hematite ore ultra-fine size fraction, formally treated as waste but now upgraded by HSS, is a part of Arrium’s program to improve recovery.The HLS method for iron ore characterisation is not generally used as part of routine iron ore feed metallurgical evaluation due to the expense, toxicity and time-consuming nature of the technique. Results show that the HSS method for iron ore characterisation can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and can be used on-site to improve turnaround time of results (Begelhole, Jasper and Koroznikova, 2013).Arrium have applied this technique successfully for the past three years to progress process improvement for the two OBP as well as to assist Arrium’s on-site laboratory services, Bureau Veritas in Whyalla.The main objective of this program has been to further develop the HSS procedures using a low-toxicity, high specific gravity (SG) suspension; LST and WC as the dense medium for metallurgical evaluation of ultra-fines.A suspension of a particular density will separate iron ore into two products: a sink fraction (denser iron oxide – hydroxide particles) and float fraction (silicate – iron ore composite particles). A theoretical grade and mass recovery can be calculated, and a grade – mass recovery curve can be constructed for iron.Metallurgical evaluation of the plant feed ultra-fine size fractions are used to improve efficiency of an upgrading plant process. This type of characterisation can be used to prepare feed piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved.CITATION:Koroznikova, L, Begelhole, J and McKnight, S, 2016. Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

The JK Drop Weight test was developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in the early 1990s as a means of characterising ore for the purposes of AG/SAG mill and crusher modelling. It has since been used extensively worldwide in the minerals industry as a key ore characterisation test which produces parameters which are used in comminution circuit design and optimisation. The test generates three parameters which are used in the AG/SAG mill model of the JKSimMet software. The resistance of the ore to high energy (impact) breakage is quantified with the A and b parameters. The oreÆs resistance to low energy (abrasion) breakage is measured using the ta parameter. The accuracy and precision of the results of the JK drop weight test are of great importance given that the parameters are key inputs in the design of such capital intensive items as SAG mills. Plant optimisation exercises also rely on the accuracy of the parameters to assist with improving the performance of an existing circuit. A thorough analysis of the accuracy and precision of the parameters generated by the JK drop weight test has now been undertaken by JKTech Pty Ltd (JKTech). An experimental program was designed using statistical methods to plan a hierarchical set of 24 drop weight tests on homogeneous material. Each stage of the test was identified and incorporated into the experimental design so that the contribution to the overall error of each stage could be quantified, including the effect of operator. The data were analysed by nested analysis of variance. An overall analysis of the A, b and ta parameters generated from the test program has now quantified the variance of these parameters more thoroughly than ever before. Using the results for the impact parameters, an analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of these variances on final SAG mill comminution circuit design. The results will also be used to refine the comparative testing procedures currently in use by licensees worldwide.

I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.
