Our colleagues cannot in the future earn reputations and medals for achievements in milling and smelting ore and for successful management of mining companies, if some one doesn't keep finding and mining the ore to mill and smelt and to provide the basis for the good management. Good ore seems sometimes to be quite helpful to good management, and good ore is not as easy to find as it used to be. And there are still more reasons, why—when this honor had been decided upon and named for Mr. Daniel C. Jackling—it should be initially conferred on Reno H. Sales. . The terms of reference of the award are that it should be conferred upon an individual working in the fields of mining, geology, geophysics, who has made an outstanding contribution to the progress of technology in one or more of those fields. And in this initial year (the earlier years are the easiest) just that was done. I think I could get away with it amongst the old-timers of my generation if I say that this time they made the award to the individual, who made the outstanding contribution. But, as Al Smith used to say, "Let's look at the record." Really, the record is mixed up a little with extra-lateral litigation—the old-time "apex cases" under Section 2322 of the Revised Statutes. Reno Sales doesn't like such litigation, but there is little question that the urgency, generated by conflicting claims of intra-limital and extra-lateral rights, and consequent necessity for committing to records and maps the complications of Butte structure, did advance—and by several years—the first continuous, accurate, systematic, and scientific portrayal of the geological and mineralogical details of what is, after all, the most important and the most complicated copper district—at least in North America. Prior to Sales' time, some of the most eminent of geologists often waived details. One geologist took the judge to the window to show him the Rarus fault going through a notch in the Continental Divide. The entertaining testimony in the Bluebird litigation was as perfect in literary style as it was innocent of the criteria by which faulting and lack of continuity of vein structure are now recognized. At any rate, this need for an accurate record of structure was in the background—to whatever extent it was, or was not, the etiological agent—for formation of the Geological Department of the Amalgamated Copper Co. in and about the year 1900. Charles W. Goodale was at that time the head of the Boston & Montana, and John D. Ryan succeeded William Scallon as the president of Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1905. Horace V. Winchell, for years a specialist in extra-lateral litigation, was perhaps the man who at that date had the vision, the persuasive weight with the management, and the willingness to defend the idea of large current expenditures (as then viewed) for a complete and sys-

The direction of the optic or "C" axis of a uniaxial metal crystal can be found with the metallurgical polarizing microscope by examining two planes of section on the crystal. Complete orientation of the crystal can be determined if a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section. Examination of Uniaxial Metals in Polarized Light-Rotation of a uniaxial crystal surface, properly prepared,' shows four extinction positions 90 deg apart, provided that the surface is not close to a basal section. One of these two extinction directions corresponds with the projection of the optic axis on the surface of section. This direction can be found if the 'sign of the rotationr2 for the metal is known. To find the direction of the optic axis, the crystal is rotated on the stage 45 deg from an extinction position. With a crystal of negative sign, to produce extinction the analyser must be rotated towards the optic axial direction and vice versa. All sections, other than basal, of a uniaxial crystal have the same sign of rotation and, since there is no change in sign with wave length, white light can be used for these measurements. U the sign of the rotation is not known the presumed direction of the optic axis can be determined assuming a positive sign. A third section cut normal to the presumed optic axis will show basal extinction if the assumption is correct. It is convenient to use the edge between the two planes of section as a fiducial direction common to both surfaces. The optic axis can be related to this direction. If the above measurements are repeated on the other plane of section and the angle between the two section planes measured, stereographic projection can be used to determine the orientation of the crystal optic axis. Determination of Complete Orientation—The complete orientation of a uniaxial crystal can be determined provided that a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section, and the twin law is known. The orientation of the twin crystal optic axis can be determined in the same way as for the main crystal

THE Fletcherville Furnace was built in 1864 and 1865, making its first blast from August until October of the latter year, when it was blown out to prevent its "bunging-up." Repairs were made in time to enable it to be blown in again December 12th, 1865, the blast ending October 7th, 1866. Total product 1921.15 tons iron, an average of 6.8.2.5 tons per day, from ores yielding 44.8 per cent. Consumption of charcoal 223.2 bushels per ton of iron. The furnace journal up to this time shows no record of furnace dimen¬sions, or temperature of the blast, but as near as can be ascertained, they were as follows, viz. Height of stack, 42 feet. Diameter of bosh, 11 feet. Angle of bosh, 7 1/2 inches to 12 inches rise, about 58°. Diameter of open tunnel head, 42 inches. Number of tuyeres 3; each 3 inches in diameter. Dam 15 inches high. Tuyeres 24 inches high. Tymp 22 1/2 inches high. Diameter of steam cylinder, 20 1/4 inches. Stroke 5 feet. Diameter of blast cylinder, 64 inches. The engine is direct-acting horizontal non-condensing. December 26th, 1.866, the furnace was again put in blast, having been considerably altered in the crucible; the height of stack, bosh, and tunnel head remaining as before. Six tuyeres were put in, three in each of the side arches. The hearth or crucible was rectangular in form, 3 feet wide x 32 feet long x 62 feet high. Inclination of bosh 58°. Height of tuyeres 26 inches ; nozzles 2 1/4 inches diameter. Temperature of blast estimated to be about 500°.

AUSTRALIANS and New Zealanders, whose countries have respectively yielded gold to the value of £666,000,000 and £96,000,000, are taking full advantage of the current high prices for that metal. There is a marked activity in ordinary prospecting, geophysical exploration, further development of working mines and reopening of old properties, formation of new companies, installation of new equipment and processes, and expansion of operations generally. Australian gold production last year was approximately double the quantity of 1929 and its value three times as great, 1929 being the low of recent years. The 1933 production was about 821,000 oz. From New Zealand, 165,000 oz. was exported last year. Papua and New Guinea contributed slightly over 100,000 oz. What the future price of gold will be nobody knows, but, even if it returns to the former level, Australian producers are almost sure of 110 shillings an ounce until 1940 through the Commonwealth Government's Gold Bounty Act, at present temporarily and necessarily suspended from operation.

Some conceptions, particularly those regarding the necessity of depth, have been fairly well shattered, as we find that they are present in the water tunnels of New York, on the surface at marble quarries in Vermont, and in the coal mines of the United States, as well as in the deep mines of the South African and Kolar gold fields, and in the nickel, copper and gold mines of Canada. Their occurrence under such a variety of conditions is, therefore, a challenge,

The anthracite coal trade, with a shipment averaging about 70,000,000 tons per year, differs essentially from other coal business, iii the fact that the larger sizes, comprising about 65 per cent. of the total, are used almost exclusively for domestic purposes, principally during the winter months; and that for proper combustion close-sizing is imperative, so that eight sizes are made; broken, egg, stove, and nut, known as prepared sizes, and pea, buckwheat, rice, and barley, known as steam sizes. These sizes are made in the regular course of preparation, and but little variation in the natural percentage of each is practicable. Thus it is necessary either to work the collieries intermittently, or to dispose of all the varying sizes in their fixed proportions. Unfortunately, the market does not at all times absorb the coal in proper proportions, and rather than interfere with the regular operation of the mines it has been found economical to provide storage for the excess. While the cellars of' the consumers are the great storage-plants of the country, this capacity is not under the control of the trade, except so far as reduced prices during the spring and summer months may tempt the use of this reserve. The same remark applies but with less force to the retail yards, which, though usually small, store in the aggregate a large amount of anthracite. While every effort is made to utilize to the utmost the individual storage-capacity of the country, there still remains the necessity for taking care of the irregularities of the market by the construction of storage-plants under the direct control of the producers. Such plants are usually the property of the railroads, and are situated at points most convenient from a traffic stand-point.

ACIDIZING, as the terns is used in the petroleum production industry, involves the use of hydrochloric acid in predominantly limestone formations, resulting in the lowering of resistance offered to the flow of oil and gas through the oil-bearing formation, usually with resultant increased production. A number of articles have been written on the chemical treatment of oil and gas wells; a bibliography of these works will appear in Volume 123 of the Institute's TRANSACTIONS (1937), and a few other references are appended to this paper.

From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

OXYACETYLENE .cutting has experienced rapid development in the last few years and greater advances and expansion and broader application may be expected in the immediate future. Marked changes in cutting practice may be expected as a result of the advances in metallurgical science that have produced special alloy steels with properties requiring different cutting techniques than for ordinary low-carbon steels. Much current attention is being directed to those problems of modified cutting practices. Cutting has thus ceased to be merely a shaping problem. SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. INTRODUCTION THE use of iron powder during the post-war conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: I. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price-The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. Iron powder parts are compressed in automatic presses to definite size, shape, and density. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. QUALITY and size do not ordinarily go hand in hand, but there is good evidence that both these attributes reached a new peak at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York just concluded. Certainly, the total attendance of 2500 was far above any yet attained, as might be expected with the recent rapid growth of Institute member- ship. General comment indicates that the quality of the papers also was notable, though not measurable by so definite a yardstick as attendance. During the meeting 49 technical sessions were held, at which more than 250 formal papers were presented. In addition, there were some thirty special meetings of committees, Divisions, and other Institute groups. In reporting the Annual Meeting eleven years ago the statement was made that "unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger," and "the fifth floor, where a buffet lunch is served each day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size." Unfortunately the angel to succeed Andrew Carnegie, who financed the building of the present home of the Institute 35 years ago, has not yet ' appeared. The point-source function introduced by Horner' us a solution to the general unsteady-state equation for the flow of fluids through porous media has been utilized to calculate pressure profiles for adjacent wells as a function of time. By trial and error, the time at which the pressure waves meet to cause interference can then be calculated. For this calculation, the time of interference is arbitrarily defined as that time when both pressure waves exhibit a pressure decrease of 25 psi ar the same point within the formation. To illustrate the method, an example involving two adjacent wells producing at different rates has been worked out and is presented in detail. INTRODUCTION The initiation of production of a new well is usually accompanied by pressure drawdown measurements in order to establish the extent and characteristics of the formation. The interpretation of such pressure drawdown data is based on mathematical developments involving a single well in an infinite reservoir. If more than one well is present in a reservoir, the possibility of interaction between wells exists. Therefore, care must be taken in interpreting the pressure drawdown data. It becomes important to be able to determine when this interaction, or interference, becomes significant. This paper presents a method for the prediction of the approximate time of interference between two such adjacent wells. The basic differential equation describing the pressure distribution existing during unsteady-state flow of a slightly compressible fluid has been solved by Hor-ner.' for a constant production rate from a circular homogeneous reservoir of infinite extent. The solution utilizes the point-source function to define the pressure at various points within the formation as a function of time. The importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 -AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold—many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. .Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. During the machining operation much of the finely porous subsurface structure was obliterated. Accordingly, observations were also made

THERE is not the slightest doubt that the present recoveries of valuable minerals by the Broken Hill mills could be improved, and that further machinery would be installed for the purpose if it could be assured that a high price of metals would be maintained; but concentration, like all other com¬mercial propositions, is a question of profit and loss, and no sensible metallurgist would carry out his work in such a manner as to obtain high recoveries at a financial loss to his company. There is a point in all concentration at which the added money obtained from the higher recovery of minerals is balanced by the extra cost of obtaining the last part of the recovery; a wise metallurgist will be content with his work before his working-expenditure reaches this point. To a casual observer, the work being done by the various Broken Hill mills is identically the same. A closer investigation will show that this is far from being the case, for it is a remarkable fact that, although the larger mines extend over a length of approximately only 2 miles, such a difference in the physical and chemical properties of the ores exists that, from the first reduction downwards, special treatment is necessary in each case, and hardly any two mills are identical in operation. The details of this paper refer directly- to the work of one . particular mill in Broken Hill, for the reason that the ore from each mine presents special difficulties and requires its own special treatment. I have selected the mill referred to because it has been constructed and modified under my supervision.
