ANOTHER meeting of the Institute has passed into history and it fully sustained the reputation of the Institute as a live organization of the men, and nowadays the women, concerned with the mineral . ? industries and those working therein. The field meetings of, the 1nstitute are cine of its pleasantest and most valuable features. As Dr. Raymond used to say, ((It is good for a mining engineer once in a while to see a mine" and these meetings bring back to the mines those who, through progress into higher executive positions, have come to visit them infrequently, at the same time that they give opportunity for the .younger men to see regions and mines aside from those in which they are then working. This, and the formal and' informal interchange of information resulting,, is of the greatest professional value to all, while the meeting of old and making of new friends causes each meeting to be notable in turn. This year's meeting at Salt Lake City was one of the largest that has been held outside of. New York City; 470 members and guests registered while many more were present at the sessions without attending to this formality. '

Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, which is the mineral having the composition CaF2, calcium fluoride. Its valuable properties are due to its content of fluorine, and it is the only important commercial source of that element. The name is derived from the Latin fluere, to flow, because the mineral melts easily and is a good flux. History The mineral has been known since Greek and Roman times, when it was used for drinking cups and ornamental slabs. Various peoples including the Chinese and the American Indians have carved ornaments from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola, who wrote about it in 1546.1 Mining began in England about 1775 15 and at various places in the United States during the period 1820 to 1840.28 Substantial production was achieved first in the period 1888 to 1900 in consequence of the development and widespread adoption of the basic open hearth method of making steel, in which fluorspar is used as a flux. After that, production and usage was stimulated by growth in the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries and accelerated by World Wars I and II. The organic fluorides called "Freons" entered the picture in 1931, and the use of anhydrous HF as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel blends began in 1942. The development of the froth flotation process in the late 1920's, a differential flotation scheme for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and other minerals in the 1930's, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low-grade ores in the 1940's were outstanding technological contributions that enabled increased production of fluorspar concentrates. Composition and Properties Fluorite in its purest form contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Substitution of small percentages of cerium and yttrium for calcium have been noted.4 Mechanical inclusions of gases and fluids such as petroleum and water, and of other solid minerals such as pyrite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite are common. The fluorspar of commerce contains attached and admixed mineral impurities, chiefly calcite, quartz, barite, celestite, and various sulfides. It is interesting that the purest commercial form in which the mineral is sold, acid grade concentrate, contains a minimum of 97 pct CaF2, and as such is of comparable purity to many reagents used in chemical laboratories. Fluorite has a marked tendency to occur in large, well-formed crystals sometimes six to ten inches on a side. It crystallizes in the isometric system, frequently forming cubic and octahedral crystals or combinations thereof. The mineral also occurs in massive and in earthy forms, and in crusts or globular aggregates with radial fibrous texture. Crystalline fluorspar exhibits a great array of colors, from colorless and water clear to yellow, blue, purple, green, rose, red, bluish and purplish black, and brown. The colors are often arranged in alternating bands parallel to cube faces. They may be altered by exposure to X-rays, heat, ultraviolet light, and pressure, and are caused by a variety of factors including the presence of trace impurities and displaced ions in the lattice. Sometimes the changes induced by X-rays can be reversed by ultraviolet radiation. The mineral has a hardness of 4, and is the model of that hardness on the Mobs scale.

This paper records over twenty years' experience with the use of the Rheolaveur system in the United States, showing its ability to meet changing conditions caused by the dirtier mine output of present-day mechanical mining methods. Data are given on size ranges handled, number and capacity of units installed, maintenance experience, and operating results on two-product and three-product separations. IT is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the principles employed in the Rheolaveur system of fine-coal cleaning as these have been fully covered in the technical literature of the Institute."2 Rather, our purpose will be to record the highlights of over 20 years' experience in the United States with Rheolaveur fine-coal launders, which will indicate their capabilities and costs of cleaning and their adaptability to meet the changing conditions caused by present-day mechanical mining methods. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders are used in the United States to treat a wide variety of size ranges of fine coal, the coarsest being 1/2 in. to 0 and the finest about 1/8 in. to 0. In Europe feeds as coarse as 5/8 in. and as small as 1/2 mm (28-mesh) to 0 are being cleaned. The size ranges usually handled in this country are 3/8 to 1/4-in. round to 0. Thirty five units with a combined hourly feed capacity of 3200 tph have been installed in the United States. Individual units are cleaning as little as 25 tph, while others are cleaning as much as 200 tph. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders offer cleaning units of high capacity and are outstanding in requiring a minimum of building space per ton of input. Experience has shown that maintenance costs are low. Several installations were made in the Pittsburgh district from 1928 to 1930, and since that time operation has been largely two shifts per day. Minor repairs to liner plates and Rheo boxes have been required during the intervening years, but no major replacement of launders was required until 1947 and 1948. At one of these plants, launders operated for 17 years before they were replaced and during that period over 26,000,000 tons of —5/16-in. coal were cleaned. The effect of the much dirtier raw coal produced by mechanical loading of the Pittsburgh seam is shown by the following tests. The data in table I summarize the performance of a Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning hand-loaded raw coal. The —4-in. raw coal fed to the cleaning plant analyzed only 8.16 pct ash and 1.31 pct sulphur and contained 4.6 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. Two years later, in 1945, mechanically-loaded coal from the same mine was cleaned in the same plant. The feed, —4 in., then analyzed 20.10 pct ash and 1.53 pct sulphur and contained 20.2 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. The performance of the Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning this coal is given in table 11. It will be noted that the +48-mesh coal is cleaned almost as thoroughly as in table I. The large amount of high-ash slimes produced from the dirtier feed are responsible for the higher ash of —--48-mesh washed coal in table 11. The large amount of high-ash slimes produced from the dirtier feed are responsible for the higher ash of —--48-mesh washed coal in table 11. A newly developed ac technique was used to measure the electrical-resistivity changes associated with both cyclic stressing and subsequent annealing of high-purity and OFHC copper. The early stage of push-pull fatigue was explored at 293° and 4.2°K, with stresses chosen for an expected fatigue life of 2 to 8 X 105 cycles. For high-purity copper, fatigue at 293°K was accompanied by an initial increase in resistivity. After about 5000 stress cycles, no further increase was observed. Annealing studies showed that the resisticity increment could be accounted for solely in terms of an increased dislocation density, to about 2 x 1010 disl pev sq cm. Fov 42°K fatigue, however, the resistivity increased continually, with no evidence of saturation, as approximately (No. of stress cycles)1/4. This is intevpreted to result from both dislocation multiplication and vacancy production; estimated vacancy concentrations are 10-4 to 10-9. The continuous resistivity increase was inhibited by interspersed annealing treatments at 293°K, which also raised the level of the stress-strain curve. These effects are attributed to annealing of vacancies into dislocation loops. In contrast, OFHC copper fatigued at 4.2°K showed saturation of electrical vesistivity after only a few hundred cycles, and it appeared that vacancies annealed out completely between 77° and 293°K. MaNY observations suggest that both dislocation multiplication and point-defect production are important aspects of fatigue deformation. An increase in dislocation density with number of stress cycles has been demonstrated or implied by several experimental techniques, including optical metallography with lithium fluoride,' electron microscopy with copper,2 thermal conductivity of Cu-Zn alloys,3 and peak-stress measurements during cycling at constant plastic strain amplitude.4,5 At low amplitudes and/or stresses saturation of fatigue hardening and dislocation density occurs early in the expected fatigue life,4-6 frequently by a few hundred cycles. The evidence for point-defect production is somewhat less extensive, but it is nonetheless persuasive. Rosenberg7 reported briefly that, for equal stresses, copper fatigued at liquid-hydrogen temperature displays an increase in electrical resistance some ten times that which accompanies unidirectional stressing. Further, the extra resistance saturates after a few hundred stress cycles, and does not anneal significantly until a temperature of about 170°K is attained.' Point-defect production during fatigue is also suggested by 1) the softening during cyclic stressing of initially strain-hardened polycrystal-line copper9, 2) the strong temperature dependence of the yield strength of fatigue-hardened mono- and polycrystalline copper,579"0 and 3) the influence of intermediate annealing upon slip-band formation in copper fatigued at 90°K.8 It is evident that characterization of the fatigued state requires a knowledge of both point-defect and dislocation densities. For this purpose electrical-resistivity measurements are useful, but they are difficult to perform because of geometric limitations. Push-pull fatigue is necessary to obtain a macroscopic ally uniform deformation over the specimen cross section; however, the specimen must then have a low slenderness ratio to avoid plastic buckling, while the standard dc resistivity technique requires a very slender specimen for

EVERY forward-looking mining company realizes the need for employing graduate mining engineers so that there will be a supply of qualified men from which to draw for company officers, executives, and mine managers. The mining industry is competing today with numerous other fields of engineering for its supply of technical men, many of which are more attractive than mining because of better pay, living conditions, and well- regulated company training programs. The Ontario Mining Association and the mining companies of Ontario are conducting a postgraduate training plan which if adopted in the United States, might well encourage top quality men to study mining.

Percussion drilling with tungsten carbide insert button bits ranks among the most significant advances in both underground and surface drilling in medium and hard rock formations. Getting top performance and life from these upfront components is not particularly difficult if one pays attention to the basics in operation and maintenance. For some reason, a few of the essential operating and maintenance steps for getting the most from these tools seem to have gotten turned around; instead of operating at the near optimum levels, some miners, in following myths or misunderstandings about them, are shortchanging their optimal utilization. Let's examine the two most harmful ones.

AN isopachous map is one on which lines connect points of equal thickness of a given unit. This type of map is used by the Florida Phosphate Project of the U. S. Geological Survey to represent the economic phosphate deposits known as matrix and the waste material, or overburden, that overlies the matrix. The top of the bed on which the phosphate was deposited is known as the basement and a subsurface contour map of this old buried erosion surface is known as a basement map. Recent experiments have been made in preparing maps that show tonnages and grades of the phosphate content of the matrix.

Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground- water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hundred pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. The paper reviews the efforts made to utilize powder metallurgy to solve problems encountered when using alloys at high temperatures. The following subjects are discussed: comparison of wrought and sintered super alloys, sintered aluminum powder, porous materials for transpiration cooling, molybdenum, and cermets. TODAY, powder-metallurgy techniques are be-JL coming increasingly important, producing materials which at the present time cannot be made by any other method. Among these materials are high melting-point metals such as tantalum and tungsten, porous metals for filters and lubricant-containing bearings, electrical contacts and electrodes (i.e., tungsten-copper), cutting tools of the cemented carbides, and magnet alloys. In addition, the powder-metallurgy industry has grown because, through the application of its methods, shaped parts, such as gears, can be produced at tremendous rates with a low scrap loss in comparison with manufacture by casting or forging and machining. In the past few years, by utilizing powder metallurgy, several approaches to the problem of high temperature materials have been investigated. In this paper the authors will review some of the studies on application of materials having properties above 1350°F. Since their experience lies in the aeronautical field, possible uses of powder-metallurgy techniques in the production of aircraft en- gines will be emphasized. A large portion of the work is classified, but such a restriction has not eliminated any field from discussion, although limiting the amount of detail it is possible to present. The development of high temperature alloys from powders and porous metals for cooling will be discussed as well as research done on molybdenum and molybdenum alloys, cermets, and intermetallics. Some studies on the utilization of cermets will be considered along with special problems that have been revealed through these investigations. Special interest in certain factors of sintered aluminum powder (SAP) makes it desirable to discuss this material although its use temperature is below the 1350°F limitation set for this paper. High Temperature Alloys from Powders In general, components made from powders for room-temperature application have been investigated with the primary purpose of taking advantage of the high production rates and economies made possible by powder metallurgy. From the standpoint of properties, the ojective of the powder metallurgist has been to obtain a product comparable to the cast or wrought product that is to be replaced. Comparisons of the properties of alloys made by powder-metallurgy methods with those of similar compositions made by casting and forging are reported in the literature.12 In many cases equivalent

THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems. It is equally important to realize that most coal mines will require one or more conventional loader setups in the plan of total mechanization. Seam variations, adverse physical conditions, and special designs of main headings for haulage and ventilation, to name only three reasons, may render 100 pct use of continuous miners uneconomical. Of course, this situation may change. In one mine, prior to 1954, machines that ripped coal from the face achieved only average results, as compared to the impressive performance of boring-type units in another coal mine. A boring-type unit was therefore selected for the first mine in the belief that the chance of success would be greater if it were used in a combined cutting and wedging operation, cutting a full face in its forward movement. The miner was located in a part of the mine where a special projection could be readily developed, a solid area scheduled for mining according to the overall progress plan. All openings surrounding the particular area were carefully investigated for the presence of sulfur balls. Fig. 1 (opposite) shows the representative seam section, containing the several pyritic bands 1/4 to 1/2 in. thick; a characteristic Pittsburgh seam parting averaging 5 to 6 in. of slate, coal, and slate; and the occasional py-rite lenses 2 to 3 in. thick. In 1926 Gendersl reviewed the existing theories of this subject and stated his views in support of the gas-pressure theory. Again, in 1937, the subject was thoroughly reviewed by N. B. Vaughan3 and by Phillips and Brick,2 so that no résumé is called for here. The purpose of this paper is to describe certain observations made in the course of mill work, and to point out that they mostly tend to confirm the gas theory of Genders. Vapor Segregation There is, however, one type of inverse segregation that can be accounted for by considering the volatility of one of the constituents of an alloy. The most familiar case is ordinary brass, which is subject to a zinc enrichment of a few tenths of a per cent at the surface of a chill casting. This has been noted in 70-30 brass by Genders, and a typical example of it is given in Table 1, which represents a cylindrical billet 7 in. in diameter by 55 in. long. After lathe-turning 1/32 in. from the surface, the remaining distance to the center was sampled at six equally spaced intervals. the lead, which is essentially the same throughout, will be mentioned later. Consider a brass-mill mold, either round or rectangular in cross section, standing several feet high. It may require a minute or two for pouring. Before it is full, the metal in the lower end has partly solidified and contracted somewhat away from the mold. The initial shell of solidification follows not far behind the top of the column, even if the central portion is liquid for a long way down. There is, then, a space between metal and mold that is filled with zinc vapor. The vapor has no exit, because the liquid at the top of the rising column is not only in contact with the mold but keeps UP a fresh supply of zinc vapor, which has, perhaps, already begun to condense in the lower portion. The cycle is short. Within a minute or two after the mold is full the bar has cooled enough to condense all the zinc. Some of it may condense on the mold; it might be expected that most of it would condense there, but the mold at that time is well coated with a velvety carbon residue from the oil dressing, overlain by fluffy zinc oxide that commenced covering the inside of the mold as soon as pouring began. The clean skin of the freshly cast brass offers a preferred surface for condensation. Reabsorption is quick and inevitable. A simple experiment indicates that a surprisingly large quantity of zinc vapor is trapped in the space between mold and

ZING is, as is well known, very brittle at a temperature of about 210' C. (410' F.), and may then be readily pulverized in a mortar. By sifting it may be obtained of uniform grain. I have been accustomed to prepare products passing through 40, 60, and 80-mesh sieves, and also by bolting through a fine handkerchief. The principal analytical uses to which I have hitherto applied this material are to the reduction of iron directly from the ore by heating it with the pulverized zinc, and the reduction of ferric to ferrous compounds in solution. In the first case the pulverized ore, 0.5 gram or less, is intimately mixed with about ten times its weight of the pulverized zinc (the finer the zinc the better), in a porcelain crucible, and this mixture is covered with about the same amount of zinc. The crncible is then heated at the top of the flame of a Bunsen bhrner, at a dull red heat, for about ten minutes. The crucible should not be covered. When cool, the crucible, with its contents, is placed in a flask treated with hot dilute sulphuric acid, and brought quickly to a boil. The zinc and reduced iron are dissolved in a few minutes and the flask is then tightly corked and allowed to cool. When cool, the iron is directly titrated by potassium permanganate.

I. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESULTS. The field-work upon which this paper is based was done in the summer of 1910, and was made possible by the courtesy of the Imperial Copper Co., which gave me access to its property. For their kindness in this respect I wish to express my thanks to W. F. Staunton and Meade Goodloe. Moreover,. B. F. Smith and G. B. Gentry, mining engineers in the employ of the company, gave invaluable assistance by placing maps,. etc., at my disposal, and by discussing with me the problems of the district; and it is a great pleasure to acknowledge this indebtedness to them. In order that the significance of some of the details that follow may be better appreciated at first reading, a general outline of the conclusions reached is given here. In the Silverbell mining-district a series of Palaeozoic limestone blocks is completely surrounded by post-Palaeozoic igneous rocks, intruded in the following order: alaskite, alaskite-porphyry, biotite-granite, andesite, and quartz-porphyry. The biotite-granite is believed to represent a differentiation of the. magma from which the alaskite-porphyry came ; and this conclusion-has an important hearing on the origin of the ores. The intrusion of both alaskite-porphyry and biotite-granite was followed by the emission of magmatic waters, which sericitized and silicified the alaskite-porphyry and granite, and produced in the limestone, by the addition to it of silica, iron, and alumina, great masses of garnet, quartz, and wollastonite. Following close upon these solutions came metal-bearing magmatic waters, which impregnated porphyry, granite, and alas kite with cupriferous pyrite, and deposited in the garnet zones chalcopyrite and copper-bearing pyrite that make important bodies of contact-metamorphic ores. Secondary enrichment has taken place in the disseminated ores in the igneous rocks,. raising their copper-content to 2 per cent. in some cases,. and extensive drilling has been undertaken to block out these deposits. East of the contact-metamorphic deposits there is a fissure-vein of lead-silver ore in the quartz-porphyry. This rock is distinctly younger than the alaskite-porphyry and the granite; and the lead-silver ores belong, therefore, to a period of mineralization distinctly later than the copper-deposition.

"The reduction works of the Boston & Montana Reduction department, near the north end of this dam is one of the reduction plants belonging to the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, the other being at Anaconda. These works employ about 1,100 men and have a capacity of about 3,800 tons of crude ore per day. This plant is now being remodeled to embody results of experiments and investigations which have been made with a view to more economic.al treatment of ores. A brief description of the plant as it will be after the remodelling is as follows:Concentrator Department: Consists of six units or sections, each section treating from 550 to 600 tons of crude ore per day. This department is not being. remodelled at the present time. A concentrating process, however, has been developed and partially installed in the old mill, and an experimental section embodying this concentration process has also been installed at the concentrator at Anaconda."

The federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal industries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Because of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. The taxes indicated above, therefore, are not final and may conceivably be very materially increased. For 1918, the taxes are expected to be still greater, but no compilations are yet available. Taxes at a high rate are to continue indefinitely. The subject is clearly of gravest import to the mining industry in particular. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue, who is charged by law with the administration and collection of the taxes, is determined that these functions shall be performed in a just and businesslike way. Fairness and finality are to be the chief objectives. In view of the peculiar conditions that attach to the tax program as applied to mines and other wasting industries, like oil, gas, and timber, the Commissioner has resorted to professional advice and assistance by manning a Sub-division of Natural Resources with competent engineers, brought in from the several industries, into whose hands he has placed for solution the technical questions involved. These engineers have a two-fold duty: (1) to devote to the solution of these problems their own knowledge and experience; (2) through their acquaintance with their respective industries, and with the men engaged in those industries, to focus upon these problems, by conferences and otherwise, the best opinion of the country.
