A device for rapidly quenching liquid metals into thin platelets has been developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This rapid quenching equipment is built around the technique of catching a molten drop of metal between a rapidly closing plate and a stationary plate. The design and operation of this unit are described. The closing speed of the smasher plate at impact is 12.6 ft per sec. The quenching rate for this device is controlled by the interface resistance between the plates and the platelet, and is dependent upon the heat content and density of the material being quenched. The initial quenching rate down to the freezing point of the platelet material is lo5º to 106ºC per sec. After an isothermal delay, which is poportional to the heat of fusion of the platelet material, the final cooling rate down to the temperature of the smaslier plates is l04ºto 105cº per sec. RAPID heating of metals by capacitor discharge and other methods has provided the metallurgist with a useful tool for probing into the kinetics of phase changes and the many nonequilibrium phenomena which occur during rapid temperature changes. Equally interesting studies can also be made on metals and alloys which are rapidly cooled from the liquid state.' Studies in this field have been limited, however, because the rates at which metals could be cooled were many orders of magnitude slower than the rates possible for heating. In recent years many new laboratory methods have been developed to rapidly cool metals from the liquid state to ambient temperature and below.2"4 All of these methods involve spreading a liquid drop of metal into a thin foil in a very short time. The methods developed have varied from ejecting a drop of molten metal at the inside surface of a rotating cylinder or stationary curved plate to catching a falling drop of molten metal between rapidly closing plates. The equipment which has been developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory for rapidly cooling molten materials uses the latter of these two approaches. The basic design, operation, and initial results of this rapid quenching device are given in this report. APPARATUS The drop smasher, which is now being used to obtain rapidly cooled metal foils, is shown in Fig. 1. Basically the device consists of a smasher plate which is driven by a solenoid into a stationary plate. The solenoid is activated by a drop passing through the photoelectric cell and is powered by discharging an adjustable 350-v capacitor bank with a 66-amp peak current into it. This power supply is designed so that the solenoid is powered for 2 m-sec after plate closure to minimize the rebound effect. There is an adjustable time-delay mechanism between the photoelectric cell and the solenoid. Both smasher plates have changeable inserts so that a variety of materials can be used to smash the molten drop. The shaft of the moving plate is guided in an adjustable housing which has ball-bearing walls. The cabinet shown to the left of the drop smasher in Fig. 1 contains the power supply and receiver for the photoelectric cell, the time delay mechanism, and the capacitor bank. The drop smasher can be placed inside a vacuum chamber, for use with radioactive materials, with the upper plate forming the lid, as shown in Fig. 2. On top of the vacuum lid is an induction coil, powered by an Ajax induction generator, which is used to melt drops from the end of the rod extending through the vacuum seal on top the quartz tube. OPERATION The drop smasher shown in Fig. 2 is operated in the following manner. The smasher plates are separated and the unit is lowered into the vacuum chamber using a pressurized cylinder. The induction coil, quartz tube, and lid with sliding vacuum seal are then assembled on top the vacuum chamber. A rod of the material for rapid quenching studies is connected to the rod extending through the sliding vacuum seal. The vacuum chamber is then evacuated and the desired atmosphere established. The photoelectric cell is turned on, and the capacitor bank is charged and armed. Power is supplied to the induction coil, and the rod of material for rapid quenching studies is lowered into the induction field. A molten drop forms on the end of the rod, drops off, falls through the light beam of the photoelectric cell, and is then caught between the smasher plates. .

I. INTRODUCTION. THE application of the camera as an adjunct to topographic mapping began practically with its invention, and it has been employed with varying success since that time. With the exception of the camera to be described, the plate-camera has been universally used in this work, thus giving a projection of the area photographed on a flat surface. From such projections or photographs, by the rules of geometry and of perspective, points defining topographic features and seen from at least two camera-stations may be projected upon a ground-plane-the map.1 In 1904 I employed the plate-camera for this purpose in Alaska, but found that the labor necessary to plot the maps, even in a general way, was long and tedious. In 1905 a small Eastman panoramic camera was fitted with spirit-levels, a sightalidade and a transparent scale, introduced inside the camera to register the degree-points in the sky-line of the film-negative; also, arrows to indicate the horizon-line. This was, on the whole, successful; but the details in the topography were not brought out in the views with sufficient clearness, and the photographs were too small. These difficulties were overcome by obtaining a larger and more carefully constructed instrument, which was satisfactorily employed in the field during the year 1906. The data presented indicate that the critical shear stress and strain-hardening Thedatapresentedrate of a zinc monocrystal depend on the orientation of its slip direction with respect to its external boundaries. The tendency of a crystal to form deformation bands also depends on its shape. THE plastic behavior of pairs of zinc monocrystals in which both members of the respective pairs had the same orientation with respect to the longitudinal axis, but each had different orientations with respect to their rectangular external shapes, were compared in this investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to see what influence the shape or surface of a zinc crystal has on its mechanical properties. In a previous investigation of triangular zinc monocrystals,1 anomalous axial twisting was observed which seemed to be related to the triangular shape of the crystals. Wolff,' in 400°C tensile tests of rectangular rock-salt crystals bounded by cubic cleavage planes, found that, of the four equivalent slip systems, the two with the "shorter" slip directions yielded and produced slip lines at lower stresses than the other two. This observation and the work of Dommerich³ as formulated by Smekal4 as a "new slip condition" for rock-salt: "among two or more slip systems permitted by the shear stress law, with reference to the formation of visible slip lines by large individual glides, that slip system is preferred which has the shortest effective slip direction." More recently, Wu and Smoluchowski5 reported essentially the same effect for ribbon-like (20x2x0.2 mm) aluminum crystals at room temperature. Experimental Chemically pure zinc (99.999 pct Zn), purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., was the raw material. Glass envelopes, containing graphite molds and zinc, were evacuated while hot enough to outgas the graphite but not melt the zinc. At a vacuum of about 0.2 micron the envelopes were sealed off and then lowered through a furnace at 1 in. per hr so as to melt and resolidify the zinc and produce mono-crystals. One-half of one of the molds is shown in Fig. la. Each mold consisted of four pieces from a cylindrical graphite rod that was split longitudinally and transversely at its midpoints. Rectangular milled grooves 0.050 in. deep and % in. wide formed the mold cavity when the split halves were assembled with twisted wires. Fig. lb shows the specimen shape obtained when the top and bottom mold-halves were rotated 90" with respect to each other. Good fits prevented leakage and excess zinc was necessary to provide enough liquid head to fill the mold completely. In removing soft crystals from the molds it was impossible to avoid small amounts of bending. However, manipulations were carried out whenever possible with the crystals protected by grooved brass blocks. All specimens were annealed prior to testing. From the top and bottom sections of each crystal, X-ray specimens and tensile specimens 7 to 8 cm long were sawed. The tensile specimens were annealed inside evacuated tubes for 1 hr at 375°C. Next the crystals were cleaned and polished by 2-min dips in a solution of 22 pct chromic acid, 74 pct water, 2.5 pct sulphuric acid, and 1.5 pct glacial acetic acid.' Cleaning was followed by a 10-sec dip in a 10 pct caustic solution, then washed in water and alcohol, and dried. This treatment results in a bright surface covered by an invisible oxide film. The testing grips were a slotted type with set screws and were supported in a V-block during the mounting operations in order to avoid bending the crystals. A schematic diagram of the recording tensile-testing machine is shown in Fig. 2. The machine has been described elsewhere.' The head speed was 0.3 mm per sec for all tests. The crystal orientations were determined by the Greninger X-ray back-reflection method with an estimated accuracy of 1. Description of Crystal Geometry A schematic picture of a rectangular zinc mono-crystal is shown in Fig. 3. ABD designates the front edge of a basal plane (0001) of the crystal, the only active slip plane for zinc at room temperature. Of the three possible (2110) slip directions, the active one is indicated by an arrow. Cartesian coordinates are taken parallel to the specimen edges. IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. The first operating unit of the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany was rated 185 tpd and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are under construction or on order. Sizes range from approximately 100-330 tpd, however, units of over 500 tons are in the design stage. The ring shaft kiln is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping (Fig. 1). Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc., are mounted at the kiln top and at the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger. Mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

Like many other similar plants the ore-washer of the Longdale Iron Company has been a growth of years. In its principal features there is probably nothing new, as the type is that of the well-known " log-washer." Some of its minor details may, however, be of interest to those members who have to deal with the washing of large quantities of brown iron-ores, the principal gangue of which is clay. * Until 1883, the ore at Longdale, being of unusual purity, needed no washing, and was charged to the furnaces as it came from the mines—both lump and fine—the only attempt at cleaning being the' picking over a screen of 1½-inch iron bars, 3½ inches from center to center, set in the top of the bins through which the cars for the furnaces were loaded." ADOLPH GREINER, Seraing, Belgium :-I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have cor-rected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix II. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p; in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. MR. THE carbon content of iron-silicon and of iron-manganese alloys at fixed activities of carbon has been reported previously.' It seemed desirable to investigate a system which allows a more extended range of alloy composition within a single phase region. The iron-nickel system is ideal in this respect, in that all alloys from 100 pct Fe to 100 pct Ni are face centered cubic ("austenitic") at 1000 °C. The experimental procedure was similar to that previously described.1,2 The alloys, in the form of pieces about 2 by 2 by 0.2 cm thick, together with a similar specimen of pure iron, were equilibrated with each of a series carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide tnixtures of fixed composition, quenched in the carburizing gas in the top of the furnace and then analyzed for carbon. IT is not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bisbee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diam, churn drill- hole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in- the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location. The noise of the drilling tools was reasonably clear, but the direction of sound was uncertain. Preliminary tests with available equipment were not successful in locating the bottom of the hole. Be- cause of the mineralized character of the area and the fact there was some casing in the hole, any magnetic method of well surveying would give results ' of doubtful value.

WORLD production of the three major nonferrous metals, copper, lead, and zinc, in 1939 will aggregate about 6,050;000 tons, compared with the all-time peak of 6,237,944 tons in 1937, and the previous peak of 5,679,442 tons in 1929. The United States will furnish 30.9 per cent of the total compared with 30.4 per cent in 1937 and 41.3 per cent in 1929. Table 1 gives the details of the three metals.

SALT production in Louisiana and Texas at the present time is entirely from salt domes of the interior and coastal groups. Before and during the Civil War salt was recovered from numerous salines and salt springs by evaporation in open 'kettles. The location of these in nearly every instance was near what is now known to be a salt dome, and the source of the salt in the salines and spring waters was that in the salt core. The tops of many of the shallower domes have been subjected to erosion1. The discovery that the salt occurred as large masses of rock salt in the form of domes was made in May, 1802, at Avery Island, La., by John Marsh Avery, grandson of the original owner, John C. Marsh, who built the old salt works in 18122. The first shaft for mining was sunk on the Avery dome in 1867 by Chouteau and Price. It was 90 ft. deep, about 58 ft. being in solid salt. It was abandoned in 1870. There are three general groups or fields of salt domes; interior Louisiana in northern Louisiana, interior Texas in northeastern Texas, and the coastal domes nearer the Gulf Coast and extending from the Mississippi River to the Rio Grande. This last group contains by far the greatest number of domes. As many of the coastal domes especially are prolific producers of petroleum and a few of sulfur, their geology has been intensively studied and fully covered in the literature. The depth to the top of the salt varies from near the surface, where shallow ground waters have dissolved the salt to just below recent deposits, to several thousand feet, where the depth has been estimated only by geophysical methods. The diameter of the salt core varies from less than ½ mile to over 2 miles. Only domes where the salt is compara-tively near the surface have been developed for commercial salt. Three deeper domes, which will be described later, have recently been developed or are in process of development, as a source of brine for chemical use.

AN excerpt from the Alabama State Mining Law, pertaining to, transporting men' into and out of the mines, reads as follows: "A trip of empty cars may be operated for the purpose of taking employees into and out of the mine, where the distance to and from their work exceeds one mile." The State Mining Department of Alabama includes in its inspection the transportation of men into and out of the mines, also studying and noting improvements, or progress made, that would tend to create a greater assurance of safety in this practice. Everyone is familiar with the original safety methods employed in man-trip transportation, such as passing a rope around the trip of cars, or through the cars, fastened in the conventional manner, and with the usual "clog," commonly called a drag, on the rear end. Also there is a more advanced method of transporting men, such as the double-rope system, which is feasible on slopes used exclusively for this purpose, and is very satisfactory. INTRODUCTION The NIMCIX contactor was developed in the late sixties at the National Institute for Metallurgy in South Africa, for the main purpose of extracting uraniuy from relatively low-grade uranium solutions. ' The concept was sufficiently developed by 1974 to permit the operation of a 1500 litre per minute column to treat unclarified urgnium-bearing solution under industrial conditions. The plant operated so successfully that several large-scale units have subsequent18 teen constructed and are operating efficiently. ' Total resin consumption figures as210w as 3 per cent per annum have been reported, and the extraction efficiencies of the installations have been exceptionally good. All the solutions treated have been acidic in nature and in every case have been of such a nature as to significantly depress the maximum uranium loading on the resin beads. The chemical constituents of the leach solution fed to the loading column determines the ease with which the soluble uranium can be absorbed by an ion exchange resin. The concentration of competing ions and various resin foulants define the nature of the continuous ion exchange equipment required for efficient extraction performance. The basic NIMCIX concept is retained in these various alternate designs, but batch or continuous elution methods with fully automated or manual control systems may be selected for the different process solution conditions. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE NIMCIX CONTACTOR The NIMCIX ion exchange column is a multi-stage fluidized bed contactor which is designed to permit a counter-current flow of solution and resin in order to maximize extraction efficiency. The flow o resin is periodic, based on the Cloete and Streat 5 principle of reverse flow. The basic operating cycle can be divided into five periods, as illustrated in Figure 1. For the purposes of describing the cycle, the loading column is considered; how- ever, a similar sequence may be applied to the operation of a NIMCIX continuous elution column. S'I'EP 1: During the forward flow period, Solution flows up through the column and fluidizes the resin contained in each stage. The uranium depleted solution overflows the upper flared-section of the column as the tail solution. Step 2: The flow of solution to the column is temporarily stopped and the resin is allowed to Settle onto the plates in the column. STEP 3: During the reverse flow period, a fixed volume of solution is drained from the column to the transfer vessel. This flow causes resin transfer to occur from stage to stage and also out of the bottom stage. At the end of this period, which expires when the low level switch (LS) is actuated, some of the resin is left in the conical section of the column and the pipe interconnecting the column and the vessel. STEP 4: The cone flush period ensures that all the resin left in the cone of the column and the pipe is transferred to the transfer vessel before forward flow commences. STEP 5: The loaded resin in the transfer vessel, which has been isolated from the column, can either be hydraulically transferred to the top of the elution column or eluted in the vessel before being transferred to the top of the loading column. The major advantages associated with the NIMCIX concept are: (i) Simple method of operation (ii) Contactor can readily be scaled up to large diameters. (iii) Because the resin does not pass through pumps or airlifts, and valves cannot be closed on resin beads at any time, the resin losses are exceptionally low. (iv) Operating costs are low. (v) Relatively few valves in the system. (vi) Stable operation is achieved over a wide range of feed rates and concentrations.
