This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084° C. (1983° F.) and of a high brass about 900° C. (1652° F.), as compared to 327.5° C. (621.5° F.) for lead, 419.4° C. (786.7° F.) for zinc and 658.7° C. (1217.7° F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals.

This investigation was made under a cooperative agreement between the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, and the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory. For the past eight years, No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Depart~ of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. °This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room-and-pillar method was employed, and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labour troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine, was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In ?the interval, development work for longwall retreating below the 5,900-foot level was vigorously pushed.

This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

As continual complementary metal?oxide?semiconductor (CMOS) scaling requirements, metal gate/high-k dielectric/Si gate stacks are expected to replace poly-Si/SiO2/Si gate stacks in the future CMOS sub-45 nm technology node. Hafnium based oxide is a promising candidate to replace SiO2 as a gate dielectric, due to its much higher dielectric constant (high-k) and stability. The key challenges of successfully adopting the high-k dielectric/Si gate stack into advanced CMOS technology mostly come from the interfacial properties. The origins of the electrical and physical characteristics of the dielectric oxide/bulk interface were studied in detail. The leakage current density-voltage (J-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurement techniques were employed to study the dielectric oxide/Si interface. The effects of the post-deposition annealing (PDA) treatment on the interface charges of dielectric oxides were studied. We found that the PDA can effectively reduce the trapping density and leakage current, and eliminate hysteresis in the C?V curves. Besides, the changes in chemical bonding features at HfO2/Si, HfSiO/Si and HfSiON/Si interfaces due to PDA treatment were evaluated by XPS measurements. The XPS analysis provides a better interpretation of the electrical outcomes. As a result, both HfSiO and HfSiON films have exhibited superior performance in terms of thermal stability and electrical characteristics.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd., has initiated a scheme for construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai in India. To ensure speedier completion of projects several new technologies were adopted to save time without compromising on safety and reliability. Many of the flyovers involved large diameter pile foundations carrying loads ranging from 3500kN to 1375kN. Significant time would have been lost in using conventional load testing procedure to check pile capacity apart from the difficulty in mobilizing the load and the obstruction to site movement and traffic on the adjoining roads. High Strain Dynamic Testing was introduced on the project sites in lieu of static load testing after conducting numerous co-relation studies on various project sites. A total of seven co-relation studies have been conducted till date and based on these data static testing has been replaced by dynamic testing on numerous flyovers. The paper presents the results of such studies. CAPWAP analysis was also conducted on the data to evaluate the percent skin friction and end bearing so as to improve future design parameters.

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries and is often used to improve organisational safety. This study was undertaken to examine the content of past incident investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of five elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of three Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed.

IN 1933, the monetary metals were produced in a ratio of 6.7 oz. of silver to 1 oz. of gold, the lowest relatively for silver since the period from 1851 to 1865. At the beginning of that period, the virgin placers of California -and Australia began producing almost simultaneously; in consequence, there was an abrupt fall in the high silver side of the ratio that had prevailed through the centuries after America was discovered. The output from the Comstock and other silver-bearing lodes, located a decade after this influx of new gold began, soon restored the production ratio to its former proportion, that is, a relatively large weight of silver compared to gold.

The aim of this program was to develop a reliable and meaning-ful basts for assessing certain safety aspects, namely fire and, in particular, toxicity hazards of articles employed in underground coal mining operations. This investigation was centered on the thermal oxidative degradation of "pure" ingredients used specifically in the formulation of conveyor beltings. To achieve this goal all products formed on thermal oxidative degradation of the materials studied were analyzed, identified I and the amount of each individual species present was determined quantitatively on a weight of product per weight of material basis. The weight/weight data thus obtained can then be factorized to reflect the relative toxicity of each individual species present, using for example the Threshold Limit Values adopted by the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, whereby an overall "toxicity index" can be arrived at which makes it possible to compare the different potential formulation components in a quantitative manner insofar as their "toxicity" is concerned. Furthermore, knowing the off-gassing characteristics of the commonly used additives I their contribution to the product mix obtained from actual belting can be postulated. Conversely, from the species obtained on thermal oxidative degradation of conveyor belts the type and to a degree the content of additives can be deduced. Based on the se data meaningful regulations governing the material selection for underground use can be developed. For these studies a quiescent system at 370°C was employed. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to supplement and extend the sealed system investigations and to provide information regarding thermal oxidative behavior under dynamic conditions.

Geotechnical Baseline Reports often estimate the number of cobbles that will be encountered in terms of volume or weight. These estimates are practically impossible to verify in the field. ClaroVia Holdings in conjunction with Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. developed Digital Geologist 2.0 to classify and count cobbles discharged from an EPB TBM at the RSC7 project in Burbank, CA. The system worked by using two stereoscopic laser sensors with a global shutter to scan and count cobbles at 12 frames per second. Results of the effort are revealed along with lessons learned and paths for improvement.

This report presents the results of a study to develop optimal designs for light-weight mine roof supports for use in underground coal mines. A load capacity of 196 kN (22 tons) and a height adjustable between 1.829 m (72 inches) and 2.438 m (96 inches) were taken as the design parameters and the design goal was a unit weighing less than 22.3 kg (50 lbs). Three alternative design concepts were explored, viz. mechanical, hydraulic, and hydro-mechanical and a total of 13 designs analyzed in detail. Steel, aluminum alloy and composites were the main potential construction materials investigated for suitability from structural, life, and safety and other considerations. The designs considered most promising for development were: (i) the mechanical screw-pin type using telescopic tubes and a fine adjustment screw thread section (ii) the all-hydraulic type, of steel, aluminum alloy or aramid graphite construction (iii) the hydro-mechanical design using telescopic tubes and a short stroke hydraulic cylinder for fine adjustment It is shown that by using realistic mathematical models for stress and deflection calculations, it is possible to reduce prop weight to the design goal. The analysis presented for all-hydraulic props is applicable to hydraulic cylinders on all mining equipment and similar machinery. This report includes the computer program and user's guide for analyzing hydraulic cylinders as well as a cross-indexed bibliography on structural composites.

Develop a new technique of in situ rock stress measurement which can be used when and where the conventional methods, such as the overcoring stress relief methods and the hydrofracturing method, cannot be effectively applied. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed basic principles to determine existing biaxial stresses in rock mass by using an instrumentation package consisting of one 3.8-cm-diameter hydraulic cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated flat hydraulic borehole pressure cells (BPC) to he installed in a single drill hole.

The process development described in this report was carried out at the Morgantown Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with West Virginia University. An experimental laboratory-scale pilot unit to gasify coal dust in entrainment was constructed on the Campus of the University in Morgantown. The enormously accelerated demand for liquid and gaseous fuels and utilization of our immense coal resources require that a low-cost process be developed for the gasification of a wide variety of coals. Such a process would be a major factor in lowering the cost of synthetic liquid fuels. None of the proc3sses developed in Germany prior to and during World War II, such as the Winkler process, the H. Koppers dust gasification process, the Wintershall-Schmalfoldt process, etc., meet all the requirements for a low-cost process under American conditions. Nor has any other process designed and experimentally operated at atmospheric pressure during the post-war period in this country appeared to fulfill all of the necessary conditions for a low-cost process.

Water has become a scarce resource in quality. Companies in the ornamental stones sector use water intensively in their processes. Given the current situation, it is imperative to rationalize this feature that at first is related to the reduction of consumption, through no waste. Considering the importance of environmental preservation of this resource and also to comply with the legislation that governs the procedure for processing of ornamental stones, new alternatives should be available for the maintenance of current activities and promoting the development / growth of the sector on the principles of environmental sustainability and economic in future scenarios. The ornamental stones processing industries, especially for micro and small enterprises, require the implementation of a management program that optimizes the use of this feature, since the techniques individually processed operate with three basic processes dependent on water use: split blocks, polishing and finishing slabs. This technology requires a large volume of water resources and control measures involving operating recirculation water can minimize power consumption, making the company more profitable and sustainable. This is a survey of literature, associated with technical reports provided by partner companies and government agencies. This study aimed to the organization and provision of theoretical knowledge about the subject matter coupled with management practices, which may be reproduced or re-purposed in ornamental stones processing companies. It should be noted that the industry in question is lacking in technical expertise for the implementation of sustainable attitudes relevant to water reuse.

The Misima open pit gold mine is a 20Mt per annum operation. Blasthole drilling is used to sample all material at a uniform 5m square pattern, and representative sub- sampling of the blast holes enables assay samples to be collected over the full 10m bench height. Samples are assayed for gold, silver and copper at the Company's laboratory at the mine site and the assays are provided to geologists as a written assay report and on floppy disc. Surveyed blasthole locations and assay results are transferred via personal computers (PCs) to a SUN mini-computer where results are stored by bench, blasthole assays are kriged, and plot files are created. A geologist selects grade boundaries from the kriged data, adjusting the boundaries towards the raw blasthole data where hard boundaries are recognised. Surveyors peg the resultant boundaries in the pit using a system of colour-coded pegs to display the different material types. A daily plan also shows boundaries and face positions.
